Efficient degradation of rhodamine B with sustainable electricity generation in a photocatalytic fuel cell using visible light Ag3PO4/Fe/GTiP photoanode and ZnIn2S4 photocathode

Noor Ahmed Nahyoon,Lifen Liu,Kané Rabé,Sarwan Ahmed Nahyoon,Azmat Hussain Abro,Fenglin Yang

In this study, a novel heterojunction silver phosphate-iron-graphene oxide -titanium phosphate (Ag 3 PO 4 /Fe/GTiP) composite was fabricated by the simple chemical process. The prepared composite was characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). This catalyst was used as anode material in photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) with cathode catalyst ZnIn 2 S 4 for efficient degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) with sustainable electricity generation. In PFC the degradation of 90% RhB (10 mg/l) with electricity generation of 0.18 V during 70 min was achieved at pH-3 of 0.05 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte. By increasing the RhB concentration up to 100 mg/l the electricity generation was increased up to 0.55 V. Under pure photocatalysis degraded 92.14% RhB (10 mg/l) with Ag 3 PO 4 /Fe/GTiP in 90 min. The discoloration efficiency and electricity generation are influenced by factors such as pH, external resistance, dye concentration, and aeration rate in the PFC. After four cycles of reuse, there was no decrease in PFC performance, which proves its positivity for sustainable energy generation as a greener technology.

Chloride ion-driven transformation from Ag3PO4 to AgCl on the hydroxyapatite support and its dual antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli under visible light irradiation

Hong Xiaoting,Li Min,Shan Shengdao,Hui K. S.,Mo Mingyue,Yuan Xiaoli

Visible light-driven photocatalytic inactivation of Escherichia coli was performed using hydroxyapatite-supported Ag 3 PO 4 nanocomposites (Ag 3 PO 4 /HA). The antibacterial performance was evaluated by the methods of zone of inhibition plates and minimum inhibitory concentration test. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were employed to investigate the instability and transformation of the nanocomposite by comparing the crystalline, phase, and the morphology before and after exposure to Luria-Bertani culture medium under visible light irradiation. Ag 3 PO 4 nanoparticles on the support were found to be shortly transformed into AgCl due to high chloride concentration of Luria-Bertani culture medium. The AgCl/HA nanocomposite showed both excellent intrinsic antibacterial performance contributed by the released silver ions and visible light-induced photocatalytic disinfection toward E. coli cells. This dual antibacterial function mechanism was validated by trapping the hydroxyl free radical and detecting the silver ions during the photocatalytic antibacterial process. The morphological change of E. coli cells in different reaction intervals was obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to complementally verify photocatalytic inactivation of E. coli . This work suggests that an essential comparison study is required for the antibacterial materials before and after the photocatalytic inactivation of bacterial cells using Ag 3 PO 4 nanoparticles or Ag 3 PO 4 -related nanocomposites in mediums containing high-concentration chloride ions.

Visible-light responsive photocatalytic fuel cell with double Z-scheme heterojunction PTh/Ag3PO4/BiOI/Ti photoanode for efficient rhodamine B degradation and stable electricity generation

Yundong Zeng,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong,Jiaxin Mou,Haoyang Yao,Nianbing Zhong

The development of photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) with visible-light response is usually limited by the low efficiency of electron-hole separation in photoanode . In this work, 20%-PTh/Ag 3 PO 4 /BiOI/Ti photoanode was prepared for the first time to construct a PFC with Cu 2 O/Cu cathode to degrade rhodamine B. With visible-light stimulation, the rhodamine B degradation rate, maximum photocurrent density and maximum power density of the PFC were respectively 96.33% (2 h), 0.39 mA cm −2 and 82.20 μW cm −2 . The main active species in the PFC were proved by quenching experiments to be h + , ∙OH and ∙O − 2 . The satisfactory performance of the PFC was due to that a double Z-scheme heterojunction was formed in the photocatalyst of 20%-PTh/Ag 3 PO 4 /BiOI/Ti photoanode, which made the photogenerated electrons of Ag 3 PO 4 and BiOI directly combine with the photogenerated holes of PTh , so that the photogenerated holes of Ag 3 PO 4 and BiOI and the photogenerated electrons of PTh directly or indirectly participated in the degradation reaction of RhB. In this way, the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs in the photoanode was improved, and the performance of the PFC was significantly enhanced.

Exploring the enhanced catalytic performance on nitro dyes via a novel template of flake-network Ni-Ti LDH/GO in-situ deposited with Ag3PO4 NPs

Huizhen Deng,Juanjuan Yin,Jinming Ma,Jingxin Zhou,Lexin Zhang,Lili Gao,Tifeng Jiao

A novel catalyst composed of Ag 3 PO 4 bridged by Ni/Ti LDH-graphene heterojunction structure was successfully prepared by a simple in-situ deposition method, which has excellent catalytic performance for 4-NP and 2-NA. Various characterizations to the samples such as XRD, SEM, TEM, STEM-EDS, XPS, TG–DSC, and UV–vis DRS were adopted. Because the ternary structure is mixed with each other to form more heterojunctions and higher specific surface area, the ternary composite Ag 3 PO 4 /Ni-Ti LDH/GO has excellent catalytic and cycle performance. Compared to the precursors Ag 3 PO 4 /GO and Ni-Ti LDH/GO, the finally as-obtained nanocomposite Ag 3 PO 4 /Ni-Ti LDH/GO degraded 4-NP and 2-NA solutions represented more dominant degradation efficiency. In addition, the pseudo-first-order rate constants of the composite catalyst for 4-NP and 2-NA are 0.178 min −1 and 0.089 min −1 , respectively. The complex and irregular surfaces of Ni-Ti LDH/GO provided an ideal carrier with abundant active sites for in-situ depositing and stabilizing of Ag 3 PO 4 NPs, formed the Ag 3 PO 4 /Ni-Ti LDH/GO hybrid possessed an acceptable catalytic performance on the degradation of azo dyes, which could be applied in the efficient treatment of wastewater from industries.

Pt Nanowire-Anchored Dodecahedral Ag3PO4{110} Constructed for Significant Enhancement of Photocatalytic Activity and Anti-Photocorrosion Properties: Spatial Separation of Charge Carriers and PhotogeneratedElectron Utilization

Hanxu Zhu,Yekun Ji,Lifang Chen,Weilin Bian,Jinnan Wang

Pt nanowire-anchored dodecahedral Ag3PO4{110} was constructed for organics photodegradation. SEM and TEM images confirmed that the Pt nanowires were grafted on dodecahedral Ag3PO4, which was entirely bounded by {110} facets. All the X-ray diffraction peaks of the samples were indexed to the body-centered cubic phase of Ag3PO4, indicating that Pt nanowire-anchored dodecahedral Ag3PO4well maintained the original crystal structure. The rhombic dodecahedral Ag3PO4entirely bounded by {110} facets achieved high photocatalytic activity. Due to the formation of a Schottky barrier, the Pt nanowires improved the separation of the charge carriers of Ag3PO4. Furthermore, they provided a fast expressway to transfer the photogenerated electrons and prolonged the lifetime of the charge carriers via long-distance transport, resulting in the accumulation of holes on Ag3PO4for organics degradation. More importantly, the Pt nanowires improved the reduction potential of the photogenerated electrons for O2reduction to ·O2−, which enhanced the photocatalytic activity and anti-photocorrosion properties of Ag3PO4. We found that 99.5% of Rhodamine B (RhB) could be removed over 0.5ωt% Pt nanowire-anchored dodecahedral Ag3PO4within 10 min. Even after 10 cycles, the photocatalytic activity was still high. photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–visDRS), and photoelectrochemical analysis showed that Pt nanowire-anchored dodecahedral Ag3PO4exhibited lower bandgap, higher photocurrent intensity, better electronic conductivity, and longer charge carriers lifetime than other types of Ag3PO4crystals. Radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis demonstrated that the holes were the main active species for organics photodegradation. Keywords:Pt nanowire-anchored dodecahedral Ag3PO4{110};anti-photocorrosion;spatial charge carriers’ separation;photogenerated electron utilization;oxygen reduction

In-Situ Construction of P-Doped G-C3N4/Ag3PO4 Z-Scheme Heterojunctions with Broad pH Adaptability in Combination with Persulfate for Ultra-Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of RhB

Bing Wang,Pinliang Lai,Jian Zhang,Guomin Li,Rao Fu,Hui Liu

Graphical The AgPCN+APS photocatalytic system was constructed in situ and its performance in degrading dyes in complex water environments was systematically investigated. It is of vital importance to develop highly efficient photocatalysts capable of removing dyes from actual wastewater environments. In this study, we constructed a in-situ, novel P-doped g-C 3 N 4 /Ag 3 PO 4 Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst (AgPCN) to degrade rhodamine B(RhB) in wastewater activated by persulfate (APS). Without the addition of persulfate, the kinetic degradation constant of RhB degraded by AgPCN can reach 0.53619 min −1 . Under the activation with a specific amount of persulfate, the kinetic degradation constant of RhB in the AgPCN + APS photocatalytic system can reach 0.78844 min −1 , which is 1.47 times higher than that of pure AgPCN. This is attributed to the structural defects of AgPCN itself and the energy level transformation caused by doping. Additionally, the activation of APS stimulates the generation of free radicals such as SO 4 · 2− , O 2 · − , and ·OH during the degradation process of AgPCN. It is worth noting that the AgPCN + APS system has a wide pH tolerance, indicating its application potential in complex actual wastewater environments. After three cycles of experiments, it still maintained a degradation efficiency of over 95%. Therefore, the AgPCN + APS system features excellent stability and wide applicability, providing a promising technical approach for the industrial treatment of dye wastewater.

A novel g-C3N4 nanosheet/Ag3PO4/α-Bi2O3 ternary dual Z-scheme heterojunction with increased light absorption and expanded specific surface area for efficient photocatalytic removal of TC

Zongyu Zhang,Xiuling Xue,Xiaoyi Chen

A novel ternary dual Z-scheme 2D g-C3N4 nanosheet/Ag3PO4/α-Bi2O3 (CNN/AP/BO) photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by an in situ deposition and hydrothermal–calcination method. The coupling of AP and BO remarkably enhanced the photocatalytic tetracycline (TC) degradation under visible light illumination, with an optimal removal efficiency of 91.6% (60 min), which can be attributed to the extended visible-light absorption and increased specific surface area owing to the interfacial intimate coupling with well-matched energy band positions between semiconductors. The improved photocatalytic activity resulted from the abundant free radicals by the order of ˙O2− > h+ > ˙OH based on the electron spin resonance (ESR) and quenching experiment results. In addition, the possible mechanism of TC degradation over the ternary dual Z-scheme heterojunction CNN/AP/BO was proposed.

Non-wetting surface design with magnetic and visible-light-active properties and its application to pollutant treatment

Xiao Miao,Ling Zhao,Guina Ren,Changqing Zhu

How to deal with organic pollutants of different densities and water-soluble pollutants is a challenge. In this paper, the slurry containing photocatalyst Ag 3 PO 4 , alkylated Fe 3 O 4 and adhesive layer polydimethylsiloxane can be loaded to various substrates (including fabric, sponge, cotton) with a simple adsorption method. The non-wetability to water and the oleophilicity to organic solvent were realized by reducing the surface tension of solid through alkyl chain. It can not only remove pollutants floating on the water surface, but also adsorb pollutants whose density is greater than water and then realize the recovery with the response of the external magnetic field. It is important that the Ag 3 PO 4 photocatalyst component in the material can absorb light energy to degrade water-soluble pollutants and further improve water quality. The stability tests (involving ultrasonic treatment, boiling water treatment and compression experiments) show that the prepared precursor slurry shows an excellent bonding stability with various substrates. Furthermore, graphene oxide has the best photodegradation behavior when 4 mg are added. Finally, photodegradation mechanism, the conduction (2.665 eV) and valence band (0.195 eV) information of the catalyst were analyzed.
