Background: Cyclodextrins (CDs) are commonly used host molecules of inclusion complex. However, due to the lack of a sensitive determination method, the absorption process of CDs remains unclear. Objective: In this study, an oleuropein (OL) inclusion complex employing hydroxylpropyl-betacyclodextrin
(HP-beta-CD) as host molecules was prepared and the formation of inclusion complex was ascertained by FT-IR and DSC. Spectrophotometry was established for the determination of HP-beta-CD, based on the fact that the absorbance of phenolphthalein (PP) decreased in the presence of HP-beta-CD.
Methods: The assay conditions were optimized to augment the method sensitivity. Molecular docking was employed to verify the strong interaction between PP and HP-beta-CD. The permeation process of free HP-beta-CD, HP-beta-CD of OL inclusion complex, free OL, and OL in the inclusion complex,
was examined using an in vitro mouse small intestine model. Results: Though HP-beta-CD possessed a hydrophilic outside shell, it could permeate through the mouse small intestine quickly with a cumulative permeating amount of over 90% in 2 h. Free HPbeta- CD, the host molecule HP-beta-CD,
and guest molecule OL of the inclusion complex exhibited consistent permeating profiles across the mouse small intestine. Conclusion: The approach for the determination of HP-beta-CD was accurate and precise (%RSD=2.98).

A β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) functionalized magnetic graphene hybrid (mGO-β-CD) has been prepared and its application as an adsorbent for the removal of organic dyes has been investigated. Magnetic graphene hybrids (mGOs) were first synthesized via a chemical precipitation method, and then β-CDs were applied to further functionalize the resultant mGO hybrid. The results demonstrate that the as-prepared mGO-β-CD hybrid exhibits greatly enhanced adsorption performance in water. Acid fuchsin and Rhodamine 6G, the typical dye pollutants, can be effectively removed from their solutions by the mGO-β-CD hybrid. The maximum adsorption capability of the mGO-β-CD hybrid is several times, even hundreds of times higher than that of the reported carbonaceous materials. Moreover, ca. 90% of the dye removal efficiency can be retained after six adsorption–desorption cycles. In addition, the mGO-β-CD hybrid exhibits negligible toxicity toward the normal cells. Conclusively, the resultant mGO-β-CD hybrid proves to be a magnetically separable, efficient and non-toxic adsorbent for dye removal.

In this study, 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropene) diphthalic acid (PDA)-CD polymers containing β -cyclodextrin (CD) were synthesized for the adsorption of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and dyes. It features great adsorption of bisphenol A (BPA), methylene blue (MB) and neutral red (NR). The maximum adsorption capacities of MB, NR and BPA can reach 113.06, 106.8 and 51.74 mg/g, respectively. The tandem adsorption results revealed that adsorptions of dyes and BPA onto PDA-CD polymer were two independent processes: non-polar BPA entrapment by cyclodextrin cavities while dyes were captured by the carboxyl groups and π - π stacking interactions. The adsorption processes performed well in a wide range of pH (4.0–10.0) and were not affected by fulvic acid (FA) and inorganic ions.

The hydroisomerization of isobutane is of considerable practical significance for the development of low-carbon and high-efficiency ethylene production technologies. However, conventional noble metal-solid superacid catalysts used for this reaction suffer from drawbacks including high cost and catalyst deactivation caused by the loss of halogen species and other active components. Herein, a series of highly dispersed W-Cu/Beta catalysts were designed and prepared via a facile ion-exchange method, and their catalytic performances toward isobutane hydroisomerization were systematically investigated. The results show that the introduction of WO x species effectively suppresses strong Brønsted acid sites of the Beta zeolite and modifies the Brønsted/Lewis acid balance of W-Cu/Beta catalysts. Although both Brønsted and Lewis acid site concentrations decrease with increasing W loading, Brønsted acidity is reduced to a greater extent, resulting in a lower Brønsted/Lewis acid site ratio. This acidity regulation is associated with suppression of undesired cracking reactions and improved selectivity toward n-butane. Under reaction conditions of 2 MPa, 380°C, and a weight hourly space velocity of 2.0 h ‒1 , the 5%W-Cu/Beta catalyst exhibits the best catalytic performance with isobutane conversion of 62.3% and n-butane yield of 32.4%. This enhanced catalytic behavior is attributed to optimized acidity and an appropriate distribution of catalytic active sites. Kinetic analyses indicate that WO x introduction alters the apparent kinetic behavior of the catalysts and is accompanied by an increase in apparent activation energy. The improved catalytic selectivity is correlated with changes in acidity distribution and suppression of cracking pathways rather than direct evidence of carbocation stabilization.

The crucial role of modified Beta zeolite during lignin CFP was reported. • A series of Beta zeolites with porosity or acidity modification were synthesized. • CFP of the model compound of lignin (ɑ-OH-PPE) was performed for mechanism study. • Correlation analysis between zeolite structures and MAHs production was investigated. • Mesopores in Beta aided C β -O bond cleavage; Cu-loading facilitated decarbonylation. As the only renewable aromatic polymer in lignocellulose, lignin accounts for 40% of biomass energy density. However, its complex three-dimensional structure and high thermal stability lead to dominant coke formation and low selectivity for monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) in conventional pyrolysis. This study aims to elucidate the influence of pore characteristics and acid distribution on MAHs selectivity during lignin catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) by modifying Beta zeolites through alkali treatment and metal loading, which provide a novel strategy for lignin valorization. Beta zeolites were modified using different alkali solutions (TEAOH, TPAOH, Na 2 CO 3 , NaOH) and concentrations (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 M), as well as various metal species (Co, Ga, Zn, Cu) and loadings (0.5, 1, 2, 3 wt%). Results showed that hierarchical Beta treated with 0.3 M Na 2 CO 3 achieved a bio-oil yield of 9.5 wt% and increased MAHs selectivity from 17.8 area% (for parent Beta) to 28.9 area%. 1 wt% Cu-loaded Beta exhibited 23.7 area% MAHs selectivity, where altered acid distribution suppressed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation. Then, an β-O-4 model compound (α-OH-PPE) was employed to analyze bond cleavage pathways in lignin CFP, and correlation ( R 2 ) analysis was conducted to bridge the gap between zeolite structural parameters and MAHs production. It was revealed that mesopores facilitated C β -O bond cleavage, while Cu-modification accelerated decarbonylation of acetophenone to generate toluene. Correlation analysis demonstrated that synergistic improvement in bio-oil yield and quality relied on dual “acid-pore” regulation, requiring tailored catalyst design for target products. Conventional solid catalysts for melamine synthesis from urea suffer from low activity and rapid deactivation. Herein, we developed a series of hierarchical Beta zeolites with tunable architectures (hollow and non-hollow) and abundant acid sites via a facile hydrothermal strategy. The optimized hollow Ho-B30 catalyst achieved a remarkable 92.3% melamine yield under mild conditions (400°C, 0.4 MPa), outperforming conventional microporous zeolite and industrial catalyst by 112.7% and 47.0%, respectively. Systematic investigations revealed a synergy between hierarchical pores and acidity: the hollow hierarchical pores enhance molecular transport, improving accessibility and utilization of acid sites, which collectively boost the catalytic performance. The catalyst also exhibited excellent stability over five cycles. Meanwhile, an integrated temperature-controlled purification strategy enabled direct production of high-purity melamine (98.3%). Reaction pathways were further elucidated by comprehensive analyses and DFT calculations. This work provides fundamental insights into hierarchical pores-acidity synergy for the rational design of efficient zeolite catalysts.

Amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques are a key pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), highlighting the need for highly sensitive bioassays for Aβ detection to enable AD diagnosis. Here, we synthesized a buoyant plasmonic substrate composed of polyvinyl alcohol microbubbles (MBs) decorated with in situ-reduced gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Benefiting from its inherent buoyancy and near-infrared plasmonic properties, the Au/MB substrate serves as an ideal platform for biomolecular sensing via the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique. Compared to conventional flat SERS substrates, the three-dimensional (3D) curved surface of the Au/MB substrate significantly increases the effective sensing area, while its inherent buoyancy facilitates the efficient removal of unbound targets, thereby enhancing detection specificity. By functionalizing Au/MB substrates with copper ions (Cu2+) and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA), we achieved sensitive detection of AD-related Aβ proteins. In the presence of the target analyte, the interaction between Aβ proteins and Cu2+ induces molecular deformation and orientation changes in 4-MBA, leading to distinct spectral changes in the SERS signals. The results demonstrate that the developed Au/MB-based SERS sensor enables sensitive detection of Aβ1–40 oligomers with a sensitivity as low as 10−9 M. Therefore, this work not only establishes a foundational framework for designing buoyant plasmonic substrate-based SERS sensing platform but also paves the way for the quantitative detection of disease-associated protein biomarkers, contributing to advancements in AD diagnostics.

Traditional beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) in biomedical applications faces challenges due to its inherent physical and biochemical limitations. One of the most effective strategies to enhance the properties of beta-CD for drug delivery is the synthesis of supramolecular polycyclodextrins. In this study, we designed a novel beta-CD nanocage-like structure for drug delivery, incorporating imine and disulfide bonds through Schiff base reactions. Aldehyde group-functionalized beta-CD units were used to construct the main backbone of the nanocage, forming dual-dynamic covalent bonds. The chemical structure of the beta-CD nanocage was confirmed using ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Additionally, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) revealed that varying amounts of beta-CD crosslinked with cystamine resulted in nanocages approximately 200 nm in size. In vitro drug release experiments demonstrated that doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded beta-CD nanocages exhibited accelerated DOX release in acidic and reductive environments compared to normal physiological conditions, owing to the pH-sensitive imine bond and the glutathione (GSH)-cleavable disulfide bond. The DOX-loaded beta-CD nanocages showed exceptional tumor-killing effects, particularly in acid/reduction-enhanced tumor cells. Both cellular fluorescence imaging and flow cytometry confirmed the potential of the beta-CD nanocages for acid/reduction-specific drug release. Consequently, this precision medicine model using imine/disulfide-linked beta-CD nanocage structures as acidity/reduction-sensitive drug carriers promises to improve oncotherapy through more targeted drug delivery and release, supporting individualized treatment approaches.

Sulphonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) exhibits excellent mechanical properties as a proton exchange membrane. However, its proton conductivity remains insufficient for practical applications. To address this limitation, a covalent incorporation of proton-conductive functional groups into the SPEEK matrix is proposed to establish continuous proton transport channels. Herein, through an iodination reaction of N-iodosuccinimide with SPEEK, we have successfully synthesised iodinated sulphonated poly(ether ether ketone) (I-SPEEK) with an iodination efficiency of 71.0% as confirmed by ion chromatography. This work proposes tentative reactivity positions and mechanistic hypotheses for the sulphonation of poly(ether ether ketone) and the subsequent iodination of SPEEK. Effective introduction of iodine is confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. Meanwhile, I-SPEEK serves as a precursor that provides grafting sites for hydrophilic groups (e.g. vinyl-silanes via the Heck reaction), offering a novel strategy for subsequent studies to introduce proton-conductive moieties.

Microfibrous-structured SS-fiber@beta composites are synthesized by coupling dip-coating method with a seed-assisted dry-gel conversion method. The beta crystals in zeolite shell are formed by growth on the surface of pre-added beta seeds and TEAOH-induced nucleus. One interesting point is that this approach is working highly effectively and efficiently even at high dry gel SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio of 200 (corresponding to 207 in the beta zeolite shell). Such SS-fiber@beta composites show great potentials for the heat/mass transfer limited reactions due to their hierarchical porosity , small crystals, controllable acidity as well as our distinctive microfibrous-structured design.

Dermanyssus gallinae is a significant haematophagous ectoparasite of laying hens. Despite the worldwide application of beta-cypermethrin for mite control, resistance to this compound has been developed by D. gallinae . P450s, as key detoxification enzymes involved in the metabolism of exogenous and endogenous chemical substances, have not been functionally characterized in D. gallinae . Here, the role of the P450s gene (Deg-CYP-3) of D. gallinae in acaricide resistance was studied. Firstly, P450s activities of the five beta-cypermethrin resistant strains (RR) against p-nitroanisole were significantly higher than that of the susceptible strain (RS), suggesting enhanced enzymatic activities might contribute to mite beta-cypermethrin resistance. Both mRNA expression level and DNA copy number of Deg-CYP-3 were significantly higher in RR than in RS, except for DK RR strain. Moreover, recombinant Deg-CYP-3 (rCYP-3) expressed in Escherichia coli displayed high enzymatic activity against p-nitroanisole, while Qulaton-100, acetone, isoacetone, avermectin, and ivermectin were found to inhibit this activity. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed the presence of Deg-CYP-3 protein in the digestive tract and Malpighian tubules. Finally, silencing of Deg-CYP-3 via RNAi resulted in decreased enzyme activity and increased susceptibility of PG RR strain to beta-cypermethrin, confirming that Deg-CYP-3 is crucial for beta-cypermethrin detoxification. RNAi also resulted in enhanced mortality, as well as reduced oviposition and fecundity in the PG RR strain. Collectively, these findings indicate that resistance of D. gallinae to beta-cypermethrin is associated with elevated P450s protein activity and increased Deg-CYP-3 expression levels. The results provide insights into the metabolic resistance mechanisms of D. gallinae and offer scientific guidance for the management and control of mite.

A novel polyamide (PA) thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane modified with Beta (β) zeolite was prepared by interfacial polymerization on a poly (ether sulfone) (PES) ultrafiltration membrane. Compared with the PA thin film composite (TFC) membrane, the introduction of β zeolite with porous structure notably increased the water flux of TFN membrane. Because the β zeolite with tiny-sized and well-defined inner-porous acted as prior flow channels for water molecules and a barrier for the sulfate ions. The successful introduction of β zeolite into the (PA) selective layer and their dispersion in the corresponding layer were verified by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Water contact angle, zeta potential measurements were used to characterize the changes of membrane surface properties before and after incorporating the β zeolite. With the β zeolite introducing, the water contact angle of modified TFN membrane was decreased to 47.8°, which was benefited to improve the water flux. Meanwhile, the negative charges of the modified TFN membrane was increased, resulting in an enhancement of separation effect on SO 4 2− and Cl − . In term of nanofiltration (NF) experiments, the highest pure water flux of the TFN membranes reached up to 81.22 L m −2 hr −1 under operating pressure of 0.2 MPa, which was 2.5 times as much as the pristine TFC membrane.
