Magnetic Resonance/Infrared Dual-Modal Imaging-Guided Synergistic Photothermal/Photodynamic Therapy Nanoplatform Based on Cu1.96S-Gd@FA for Precision Cancer Theranostics

Lixin Cheng,Dongmiao Sang,Fangyu Zhao,Lili Yang,Zhilin Guo,Xinfeng Zhang,Qiaoqiao Yang,Wenju Qiao,Xiaohong Sun,Xiaohong Guan,Haoyu Wang,Jiannan Wang,Hongyan Zou,Xiu'e Li,Fang Fang,Yang Li,Shujun Zhang,Lina Wu,Huiming Lin,Xilin Sun,Kai Wang

Developing new nanoplatforms for dynamically and quantitatively visualizing drug accumulation and targeting within tumors is crucial for precision cancer theranostic. However, achieving efficient tumor therapy via synergistic photothermal/photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) using a single excitation light source, remains a challenge. In this work, we designed Gd-surface functionalized copper sulfide nanoparticles that were modified with folic acid (FA) (Cu 1.96 [email protected] ) to overcome the above limitations and promote PTT/PDT therapeutics. Here, Cu 1.96 S-Gd nanoparticles were synthesized via a coprecipitation method. All samples exhibited high longitudinal relaxivity (up to 12.9 mM −1  s −1 ) and strong photothermal conversion efficiency (50.6%). Furthermore, the Gd ions promoted electron-hole segregation, inducing the Cu 1.96 S-Gd nanoparticles to generate more reactive oxygen species (ROS) than pure Cu 1.96 S nanoparticles. The Cu 1.96 [email protected] enabled the targeting of folate receptor (FR) and promoted cellular uptake, consequently enhancing oncotherapy efficacy. Compared to non-targeted Cu 1.96 S-Gd, a higher signal enhancement for magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in vivo by Cu 1.96 [email protected] was recorded. Given photothermal ability, the nanoparticles also could be visualized in infrared (IR) imaging. Furthermore, the nanoparticles exhibited biodegradation behavior and achieved good drug elimination performance via renal clearance. Our strategy, integrating Cu 1.96 [email protected] nanoparticles, MR/IR dual-modal imaging, and PTT/PDT into one nanoplatform, demonstrated great potential for anti-breast cancer therapy by effectively targeting FR overexpressed breast cancer cells.

Gd, La co-doped CeO2 as an active support for Fe2O3 to enhance hydrogen generation via chemical looping water gas shift

Zhihua Gao,Fengyan Fu,Zhaozhi Zhang,Lili Niu,Min Jin,Jian Zhang,Zekun Zhao

Support materials are indispensable to promote the durability of iron oxides for chemical looping applications. However, the dilution effect of supports on the active phase would lead to decreased bulk oxygen conduction, thus leading to compromised activity. Here, we propose several Gd 3+ , La 3+ and Nd 3+ doped CeO 2 as active supports for iron oxides and investigate the support effect to improve hydrogen generation via chemical looping water gas shift . The characterizations show that the dopants improve the oxygen vacancy concentration in the CeO 2 lattice and Fe 2 O 3 /Ce 0.8 Gd 0.1 La 0.1 O 2-δ exhibits the most oxygen vacancy concentration among all the oxygen carriers. Pulse reactions of oxygen carriers show that an abundance of oxygen vacancy concentration can promote the lattice oxygen transfer in bulk, thus contributing to improved redox reactions . The high oxygen conductivity mitigates the dilution effect on the active phase. Therefore, Fe 2 O 3 /Ce 0.8 Gd 0.1 La 0.1 O 2-δ shows the highest hydrogen yield (∼9.49 mmol −1 .g −1 ) and hydrogen generation rate (∼0.632 mmol.g −1 .min −1 ) with only a slight decrease at 650 °C over 100 cycles. Overall, this work highlights the influence of support properties on the redox reactivity of iron oxides for chemical looping applications.

Evaluation of Ce(III) and Gd(III) adsorption from aqueous solution using CTS-g-(AA-co-SS)/ISC hybrid hydrogel adsorbent

Feng WANG,Wenbo WANG,Yongfeng ZHU,Aiqin WANG

CTS- g -(AA- co -SS)/ISC hybrid hydrogel adsorbent with crosslinked network structure and superior adsorption performance for rare-earth metal ions was successfully synthesized in aqueous solution by a simple one-step free-radical grafting polymerization reaction among acrylic acid (AA), sodium p -styrenesulfonate (SS) and chitosan (CTS) using illite/smectite clay (ISC) as the inorganic additive. The structure of the as-prepared CTS- g -(AA- co -SS)/ISC hydrogel adsorbent was characterized, and the reaction parameters such as AA/SS molar ratio and ISC content were optimized, and the effects of pH values, initial concentration and contact time on the adsorption performance for Ce(III) and Gd(III) were systematically evaluated. It was found that the maximum adsorption capacities of the hydrogel adsorbent toward Ce(III) and Gd(III) reached 174.05 and 223.79 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption quickly achieved equilibrium within 15–20 min. The adsorbed Ce(III) and Gd(III) could be easily desorbed for recovery, and the used adsorbent was able to be regenerated for reuse. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, the regenerated adsorbent could still retain the adsorption capacities that were close to the initial value. The adsorption process was well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic mode and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the chemical complexation between ions and –COO – was mainly responsible for the high adsorption capacity. As a whole, the hybrid hydrogel adsorbent was potential to be used for the adsorption and recovery of Ce(III) and Gd(III) from water.

Nano-assembly of bovine serum albumin driven by rare-earth-ion (Gd) biomineralization for highly efficient photodynamic therapy and tumor imaging

Ya Wen,Haiqing Dong,Yan Li,Aijun Shen,Yongyong Li

Biomineralization of a rare earth ion (Gd) is first employed to assemble bovine serum albumin (BSA) into sub-50 nm nanoparticles (Gd@BSA) for theranostic applications, via a straightforward and reproducible strategy. Combination of Gd ions with BSA under mild conditions results in the formation of the Gd@BSA nanosystem, which has been used as the scaffold material to encapsulate a photosensitiser (Ce6) with high efficiency up to 20 wt%. Beyond playing an important role in the assembled process, the incorporation of Gd affords the potential MRI and fluorescence imaging capability of Gd@BSA-Ce6 nanoparticles. In vivo MRI allowed real-time imaging in tumor-bearing mice and showed advantages in terms of circulation time, compared with commercially used Gd–DTPA. Gd@BSA-Ce6 nanoparticles exhibited enhanced tumor-specific distribution, through enhanced permeability and retention effect, and complete cure of tumor-bearing mice after intravenous injection. The nanoparticles did not produce systemic toxicity as revealed by biodistribution and histology toxicity analyses. The results demonstrate the great potential of Gd@BSA-Ce6 nanoparticles as theranostic agents due to their excellent imaging and tumor-growth-inhibition properties.

A direct CH4 metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell with an engineered Ni/Gd-doped CeO2 anode containing Ni and MnO nanoparticles

Qihao Li,Xin Wang,Cheng Li,Xinwei Yang,Lichao Jia,Jian Li

NiMn 2 O 4 (NMO) coated Gd-doped CeO 2 (GDC) and NiO powders are prepared by a hydrothermal method for the anode of a metal (Ni-10 at.% Fe)-supported solid oxide fuel cell fueled by wet CH 4 (3 vol.% H 2 O). NMO remains on NiO but dissolves into GDC at 1400 °C. Upon reduction in H 2 at 700 °C for 2 h, Ni nanoparticles exsolve on the doped-CeO 2 (DCO) substrate (DCO@Ni), while MnO nanoparticles form on Ni (Ni@MnO). DCO@Ni demonstrates high catalytic activity for reforming wet CH 4 and high resistance to carbon deposition with a yield of H 2 increasing from 11 (500 °C) to 33 (700 °C) ml min −1 and remaining around 25 ml min −1 at 600 °C for 30 h. The metal-supported single-cell with a Ni@MnO-DCO@Ni anode shows high initial and durable electrochemical performance with a maximum power density increasing from 160 (500 °C) to 720 (700 °C) mW cm −2 and a cell voltage remaining above 0.55 V at 600 °C for 200 h under 400 mA cm −2 and 20 ml min −1 . Such high performance is ascribed to the metal support with low ohmic resistance and the engineered anode with high catalytic activity and enhanced resistance to carbon deposition.

Research on optical performance of Ln2O2S:Er3+/Yb3+ (Ln = La/Gd/Y) phosphors based on different phonon energies

Xuejiao Wang,Tianzhi Jiang,Lishuo Huang,Renguang Ye,Juan Wang,Youjie Hua,Jingtao Zhao,Gongxun Bai,Shilong Zhao,Junjie Zhang,Shiqing Xu

It is crucial to explore the intrinsic mechanisms that influence thermometric sensitivity. This study investigates the optical performance of materials with the same crystal structure but different phonon energies. Ln2O2S:Er3+/Yb3+ (Ln = La/Gd/Y) phosphors with similar morphology and particle sizes were prepared to systematically study the influence of different phonon energy matrices on optical properties. The intrinsic mechanism was elucidated through the matching degree between the energy gap and phonon energy, Judd–Ofelt (J–O) theory, and quantum dielectric theory. It was ultimately concluded that the combination of high phonon energy with a large Ω2 and a small Ω6 is beneficial for enhancing the sensitivity of temperature sensing materials.

Synergistic toughening by phase transformation and dislocation activity in (5RE0.2)Ta3O9 (RE = La, Gd, Nd, Dy, Sm, Eu, Ce) high-entropy ceramics

Binbin Ning,Junyao Wu,Sai Liu,Jinwei Guo,Xiaopeng Hu,Qing Liu,Wang Zhu

A series of five (5RE 0.2 )Ta 3 O 9 high-entropy ceramics (RE = La, Gd, Nd, Dy, Sm, Eu, Ce) is successfully synthesized via a solid-state method. Their temperature-dependent fracture toughness is systematically investigated across the 25–1200 °C range, using in situ three-point bending tests coupled with the digital image correlation method. The fracture toughness exhibits a non-monotonic variation: it peaks at 2.3 MPa m 1/2 at room temperature, then sharply declines to a minimum of 1.5 MPa m 1/2 at 400 °C. Subsequently, an anomalous rebound to approximately 2.1 MPa m 1/2 is observed at 800 °C, followed by a further decrease, stabilizing between 1.7 and 1.9 MPa m 1/2 at 1200 °C. High-temperature X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscope results confirm an irreversible orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transformation occurring between 600 and 800 °C. Aberration-corrected STEM provides direct atomic-scale evidence of a high-density dislocation network interacting with crack tips, revealing dislocation pinning, bridging, and crack deflection. The combined action of phase-transformation-induced lattice strain and dislocation-mediated toughening effectively suppresses linear crack advance and enhances energy dissipation, thereby accounting for the partial recovery of fracture toughness at 800 °C. These direct observations establish a distinctive synergistic toughening mechanism in high-entropy ceramics, in which irreversible phase transformation and thermally activated dislocation networks cooperate to improve high-temperature fracture resistance.

Lanthanide-Tuned Electronic Modulation in Rare Earth-Doped NiCo₂O₄/CP (RE=La, Ce, Pr, Gd) Nanosheets for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Yuanyuan Liao,Jieran Xie,Lei Sun,Zongyi Huang,Jing Li,Feng Liu,Yongxiu Li

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical challenge in electrochemical water splitting, necessitating the development of efficient catalysts. In this study, a room-temperature gas–liquid diffusion strategy is presented to synthesize rare earth-doped NiCo₂O₄ nanosheets on carbon paper (RE-NiCo₂O₄/CP, RE = La, Ce, Pr, Gd) as alkaline OER electrocatalysts. Among them, Ce-NiCo₂O₄/CP demonstrates catalytic activity, requiring an overpotential of only 265 mV to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm⁻² in 1 M KOH, which is lower than that of undoped NiCo₂O₄/CP (348 mV). Comprehensive characterization reveals that RE doping modulates the electronic structure of NiCo₂O₄, increasing the Co 3+ /Co 2+ ratio and optimizing intermediate adsorption. Notably, Ce doping facilitates the formation of highly active Ni(Co)OOH species during OER, further enhancing catalytic performance. Combination experiments and in-situ analysis confirmed that the increase in activity was due to the incorporation of rare earths, which enhanced the charge transfer of reaction intermediates and promoted the formation of highly active phases. This work not only presents a synthesis method for high-performance OER catalysts, but also elucidates the electronic modulation effect into the role of rare-earth elements in tuning electrocatalytic properties.

Rational design of ultra-inert Gd-DOTABA probes conjugated with unnatural dipeptides for high-contrast and low-dose tumor and vascular MRI

Aiyi Chen,Gensheng Mo,Weiyuan Xu,Yong Jian,Peijie Guan,Chenyang Zhang,Zhihan Yan,Yanqiang Huang,Lixiong Dai

Molecular Synergy : Two novel GBCAs, Gd-L1 and Gd-L2 , are constructed by integrating a macrocyclic inert Gd-DOTABA core with HSA-targeting biphenylalanine (BiP)-based dipeptides. • High Relaxivity : Both probes exhibit high longitudinal relaxivity ( r 1  = 20.7 and 23.3 mM −1  s −1 in 4.5% HSA at 1.4 T), driven by near-quantitative binding to human serum albumin (>90%). • Superior Kinetic Stability : The complexes demonstrate outstanding inertness, with acid dissociation half-lives 3-5 times longer than the clinical benchmark Gd-DOTA, ensuring a high safety profile. • Potent Low-Dose Efficacy : At merely one-third of the standard clinical dose (0.03 mmol/kg), both agents enable high-contrast tumor delineation and high-resolution angiography in vivo. • Favorable Safety : Comprehensive in vivo studies confirm excellent biocompatibility, efficient dual clearance, and no acute or subacute toxicity, supporting clinical translation potential. The development of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) that simultaneously possess high relaxivity and excellent kinetic inertness remains an important challenge for safe and efficient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Herein, we report a rational molecular engineering strategy to construct two novel probes, Gd-L1 and Gd-L2 , by conjugating an unnatural biphenylalanine (BiP)-based dipeptide to a macrocyclic Gd-DOTABA scaffold. The introduced BiP-containing dipeptide enhances interaction with human serum albumin (HSA), leading to substantially improved relaxivity. Both complexes exhibit high longitudinal relaxivity ( r 1  = 10.3 and 9.4 mM −1  s −1 in water), which increases to 20.7 and 23.3 mM −1  s −1 in the presence of HSA. In addition, these complexes demonstrate favorable kinetic inertness, with acid dissociation half-lives 3–5 times longer than Gd-DOTA. At a reduced dose of 0.03 mmol/kg, both agents enable high-contrast tumor imaging and magnetic resonance angiography in vivo . Biodistribution, pharmacokinetic, and toxicity studies further support favorable clearance and biocompatibility. These findings demonstrate that unnatural dipeptide-functionalized Gd-DOTABA complexes represent promising macrocyclic albumin-interacting MRI contrast agents with enhanced imaging performance and favorable safety characteristics. Uniform REVO4:Bi3+ micro/nanocrystals via hydrothermal reaction, microstructure, and widely tunable broadband luminescence (RE = Sc, Lu, Y, Gd, Lu0.5Sc0.5, Y0.5Lu0.5, Gd0.5Y0.5)

Xingbo Kang,Sihan Feng,Sai Huang,Qi Zhu,Ji-Guang Li

Bi 3+ ion presents strong UV excitation up to ∼430 nm and is almost not excitable by visible light, which makes it valuable in current lighting technologies. Morphologically uniform Sc 1- x VO 4 : x Bi 3+ ( x  = 0–0.03, 0.005 interval) and RE 0.99 VO 4 :0.01Bi 3+ (RE = Sc, Lu, Y, Gd, Lu 0.5 Sc 0.5 , Y 0.5 Lu 0.5 , Gd 0.5 Y 0.5 ) micro/nanocrystals were successfully prepared in this work by hydrothermal reaction under 180 °C and pH = 8, without using any chelate or surfactant. The solid-solution vanadates were formed as microrods for Sc and nanocrystals for the other RE owing to different reaction pathways. The optimal Bi 3+ content for luminescence is 1 at% ( x  = 0.01) and concentration quenching was analyzed to occur via electric dipole-dipole interaction. The peak wavelength of the excitation/emission band was found to almost linearly increase, accompanied by band broadening, with decreasing cell volume for the series of REVO 4 :0.01Bi 3+ , which was rationalized by considering the energy of metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) and the character of the chemical bond (nephelauxetic effect). Notably, the REVO 4 :0.01Bi 3+ phosphors showed broadband luminescence (FWHM >165 nm) covering almost the entire visible light region in each case, and the center wavelength of emission can be widely and finely tuned from ∼557 to 639 nm by decreasing the size of RE 3+ on demand. Such luminescence performance may allow the micro/nanocrystals to find valuable application in UV-excited white LED lighting and others.

Tuning the morphology and pyrolysis process of rare-earth Gd-doped prussian blue derivatives for electromagnetic wave absorption and anti-corrosion performance

Chunlin Zheng,Weiwei Qi,Mingqiang Ning,Lan Xiang,Tao Liu,Yuanyuan Li,Ganggang Lv,Qiang Wu,Qikui Man,Baogen Shen

Prussian blue analogs (PBA) derivatives have been researched extensively as electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers. However, the metallic components are typically transition-metal elements, which results in limited potential for optimization of their EMW absorbing performance. In this work, GdCo-PBA derivates with different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) morphologies and phase compositions were synthesized via tuning the pyrolysis rate and the dielectric loss capability can be tuned. As a result, the R-GdN/Co@CNTs achieved the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −36.74 dB@1.7 mm and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.61 GHz @ 2.0 mm due to the combined effect of the interconnected CNTs conduction network and the GdN phase in optimizing the impedance matching and enhancing the dielectric loss. Meanwhile, the radar cross section (RCS) simulation and electrochemical corrosion tests confirmed that GdCo-PBA derivatives can significantly reduce RCS values of 28.6 dBm 2 @ 15° and possessed satisfied anti-corrosion properties with a corrosion current density of 2.06 × 10 −5 A/cm 2 and polarization resistance of 2.57 × 10 4 Ω, which displayed significant potential for practical applications in extreme marine environments. This work presents a strategy for synthesizing lanthanide PBA derivates with the EMW absorbing and anti-corrosion properties.

Modulation of the microstructure and electrical properties of LaAlO3 ceramics induced by doping with rare earth elements (Eu, Gd, Ho, and Tm)

Kai Ding,Wenye Deng,Jinyang Li,Ni Ai,Yan Xue,Xianghui Chen,Pengjun Zhao,Weiwei Meng,Aimin Chang,Yongxin Xie

This study synthesized La0.9X0.1AlO3 (X = Eu, Gd, Ho, Tm) and LaAlO3 ceramics by a solid-state method. The characterization of the ceramics revealed that the high degree of lattice distortion induced by variations in the size, mass, and electronegativity of rare-earth elements enhances high-temperature stability, leading to aging drift rates between 0.4% and 2.3% after 500 h at 1000 °C. Furthermore, the emergence of intrinsic defects and dislocations alters the charge conduction mode in LaAlO3, resulting in significant linearity at temperatures above 1000 K. This study further elucidates the transition in the charge conduction mechanism from thermally activated conduction to hopping conduction, which is driven primarily by oxygen vacancies and dislocations. DFT calculations support these findings, demonstrating a reduction in the band gap and increased carrier concentration. This work paves the way for the development of advanced NTC thermistors for reliable temperature monitoring in challenging environments.
