A Matthew MXene (Ti3C2Tx) Lamellar Membrane as a Potassium-Sieving Amplifier

Zong Lu,Haoyu Wu,Yanying Wei,Haihui Wang

Transport channels with ultrahigh K + selectivity over other ions play a crucial role for living beings, but constructing ionic channels with promising K + selectivity and permeability remains a challenge. Here, an asymmetric bilayer membrane based on MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) lamellar channels consisting of a recognition layer (RL) on top of an enhancement layer (EL) exhibits an amazing Matthew effect: amplification of the preferred transport of K + , resulting in an excellent K + -separation performance. The K + ion is selected by the 1-aza-18-crown-6 ether-modified RL, owing to preferential affinity energy, and then rapidly transported as a hydrated ion through the EL, based on the confinement effect. Other undesired ions such as Na + are hindered from entering the RL by the preferred K + occupation of the crown ether. The MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x )-based Matthew membrane presents high K + -permeation rates of 0.1–0.2 mol∙m –2 ∙h –1 , with a significant K + /Na + selectivity of 5–9. The molecular separation mechanism of the Matthew membrane is investigated deeply to explore the nature of the Matthew amplification effect on K + sieving, where the precise matching of the RL and EL within the membrane governs the fast K + permeation with good selectivity. The asymmetric structure of our Matthew membrane is the key to understanding the biological function of ion channels for precise and fast ion transport, which will guide us in the creation of artificial ion channels or membranes.

An innovative MnO/Ti 3 C 2 MXene heterostructure, consisting of three-dimensional (3D) MnO nanosheet array directly assembled on two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets, was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal-annealing strategy for uranium elimination. This unique 3D/2D heterostructure derived substantially high specific surface area (311.9 m 2 /g) and exposed considerable amount of surface oxygen groups, including surface lattice M–O and adsorbed –OH. Through a comprehensive exploration encompassing adsorbent dosage, pH, ionic strength, initial U(VI) concentration, and environmental conditions, the MnO/Ti 3 C 2 MXene heterostructure demonstrated an extraordinary proficiency and specificity in the removal of U(VI). This composite exhibited an outstanding adsorption capacity of 862.1 mg/g, with a removal efficiency of 99.7 % and rapid kinetics (above 90 % within 20 s). The kinetic study indicated the adsorption process followed chemisorption dynamics and single-layer adsorption behavior. Comprehensive analyses validated the structural integrity and confirmed the successful uranium adsorption via strong interaction between UO 2 2+ and surface unsaturated oxygen groups. Notably, the MnO/Ti 3 C 2 MXene maintained excellent recyclability, highlighting its potential for large-scale applications. It emerges as a promising candidate for uranium removal, offering insights for optimizing composite materials in diverse environmental conditions and fostering advancements in water purification technologies.

Qiu-Shi Rao,Song-Yi Liao,Xing-Wen Huang,Yue-Zhu Li,Yi-Dong Liu,Yong-Gang Min

In this work, a few-layer MXene is prepared and sprinkled on a commercial polypropylene (PP) separator by a facile spraying method to enhance the electrochemistry of the Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2(NCM811) cathode. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are used to characterize the morphology and structure of MXene. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and a contact angle tester are used to measure the bond structure and surface wettability PP and MXene/PP separator. The effect of the MXene/PP separator on the electrochemical performance of ternary NCM811 material is tested by an electrochemical workstation. The results show that the two-dimensional MXene material could improve the wettability of the separator to the electrolyte and greatly enhance the electrochemical properties of the NCM811 cathode. During 0.5 C current density cycling, the Li/NCM811 cell with MXene/PP separator remains at 166.2 mAh/g after the 100 cycles with ~90.7% retention. The Rctof MXene/PP cell is measured to be ~28.0 Ω. Combining all analyses results related to MXene/PP separator, the strategy by spraying the MXene on commercial PP is considered as a simple, convenient, and effective way to improve the electrochemical performance of the Ni-rich NCM811 cathode and it is expected to achieve large-scale in high-performance lithium-ion batteries in the near future. Keywords:polypropylene composite membrane;MXene;Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2;electrochemical performance

Position-controlled non-metal single atoms on MXene enable high-performance oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Guangxu Yao,Jin Wan,Yangjun Luo,Dong Liu,Guolong Qiu,Huijuan Zhang,Yu Wang

Strategic localization of catalytically active sites within single-atom catalyst (SAC) architectures represents a pivotal determinant of material performance, particularly in two-dimensional (2D) substrates like MXenes, which offer intricate structural complexity and multifarious anchoring potentialities. Despite the burgeoning interest in non-metallic single-atom catalysts, a comprehensive understanding of site-specific loading mechanisms and their consequential catalytic implications remains substantially unexplored. Herein, we systematically investigate the precise incorporation of economically viable non-metallic elements—tellurium (Te) and arsenic (As)—onto Ti 3 C 2 MXene, a prototypical 2D material characterized by exceptional structural versatility. Our methodology delineates a nuanced approach to controllable single-atom immobilization, strategically differentiating between vacancy-embedded and surface-supported configurations. Through meticulous experimental design, we demonstrate that Te single atoms strategically integrated within titanium vacancies (C-TeSA-T) manifest superior Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) electrocatalytic performance compared to surface-anchored counterparts (W-TeSA-T). Comprehensive characterization revealed remarkable electrocatalytic metrics, including a half-wave potential of 0.88 V vs. RHE and a limiting current density of 5.65 mA/cm 2 . Synergistic Density Functional Theory (DFT) computations and multi-potential X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopic (XPS) analyses elucidated the intrinsic mechanistic landscape, conclusively identifying Te single atoms as primary catalytic centers and delineating the rate-determining reaction trajectory. This systematic investigation not only introduces an innovative paradigm for designing cost-effective non-metallic catalysts but also provides fundamental mechanistic insights into the intricate relationship between active site localization and catalytic performance, thereby advancing our fundamental understanding of site-specific catalysis in two-dimensional materials.

Few-Layered MXene Modulating In Situ Growth of Carbon Nanotubes for Enhanced Microwave Absorption

Qing Tang,Qi Fan,Lei He,Ping Yu,Qing Huang,Yuanming Chen,Bingbing Fan,Kun Liang

MXene is widely used in the fields of microwave absorption and electromagnetic shielding to balance electromagnetic pollution with the development of communication technologies and human health, due to its excellent surface functional groups and tunable electronic properties. Although pure multilayered MXene has an excellent accordion-like structure, the weak dielectric loss and lack of magnetic loss result in poor microwave absorption performance. Here, we propose a strategy for the catalytic growth of CNTs by the electrophoretic deposition of adsorbed metal ions, leading to the successful preparation of Ni-MWCNTs/Ti3C2Txcomposites with a “layer-by-layer” structure, achieved through in situ regulated growth of CNTs. By introducing dielectric–magnetic synergy to improve the impedance matching conditions, and by regulating the diameter of the CNTs to alter the electromagnetic parameters of Ni-MWCNTs/Ti3C2Tx, the 2-Ni-MWCNTs/Ti3C2Txcomposite achieves the best reflection loss (RL) value of −44.08 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 1.52 GHz at only 2.49 mm thickness. This unique layered structure and the regulation strategy provide new opportunities for the development of few-layered MXene composites.

Constructing the 3D Interconnected Conductive MXene-Cellulose Scaffold to Boosting the Piezoresistive Sensing Capability

Hongjian Zhang,Changzhou Du,Yong Zhang

Flexible pressure sensors play a vital role in advancing wearable electronics by enabling precise health monitoring, human-machine interfaces, and environmental sensing. MXene-based piezoresistive sensors have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional electromechanical properties. However, enhancing their performance and ensuring environmental sustainability simultaneously still remain critical challenge. In this study, we prepared hydroxyl-rich deacetylated cellulose acetate (DCA) fibers and attached MXene to the surface to form a three-dimensionally interconnected conductive network. Taking advantage of the typical micromorphology and in turn the high electrical conductivity modulation, the resulting MXene/DCA (MDCA) flexible sensors exhibited exceptionally high sensitivity (54.62 kPa–1), excellent linearity in the range of 0–40 kPa (R2 = 0.998), fast response/recovery time (154/125 ms), and outstanding long-term durability over 10 000 compression cycles at 12.37 kPa without significant degradation. This study offers promising insights into the development of high-performance, environmentally friendly piezoresistive sensors.

Improvement of desorption performance of Mg(BH4)2 by two-dimensional Ti3C2 MXene addition

Xuelei Feng,Jianguang Yuan,Yujie Lv,Bogu Liu,Haixiang Huang,Bao Zhang,Youhua Yan,Shumin Han,Ying Wu

Magnesium borohydride (Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ) is an attractive materials for solid-state hydrogen storage due to its high hydrogen content (14.9 wt%). In the present work, the dehydrogenation performance of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 by adding different amounts (10, 20, 40, 60 wt%) of two-dimensional layered Ti 3 C 2 MXene is studied. The Mg(BH 4 ) 2 -40 wt% Ti 3 C 2 composite releases 7.5 wt% hydrogen at 260 °C, whereas the pristine Mg(BH 4 ) 2 only releases 2.9 wt% hydrogen under identical conditions, and the onset desorption temperature decreases from 210 °C to a relative lower temperature of 82 °C. The special layered structure of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and fluorine plays an important role in dehydrogenation process especially at temperatures below 200 °C. The main dehydrogenation reaction is divided into two steps, and activation energy of the Mg(BH 4 ) 2 -40 wt% Ti 3 C 2 composite is 151.3 kJ mol −1 and 178.0 kJ mol −1 , respectively, which is much lower than that of pure Mg(BH 4 ) 2 .

Epsilon-polylysine microneedle potentiating MXene-mediated photothermal ablation for combating antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections

Dongyi Xian,Rui Luo,Qiaoni Lin,Liqing Wang,Xiaoqian Feng,Yuwei Zheng,Liming Lin,Jiaying Chi,Yilang Yan,Guilan Quan,Tingting Peng,Zejun Xu,Chuanbin Wu,Chao Lu

Antimicrobial peptides show promise in enhancing photothermal therapy, but their application is often limited by the challenge of constructing a delivery system that balances efficacy and safety. Our research demonstrated that the bactericidal efficacy of V 2 C MXene-mediated photothermal therapy is enhanced in a concentration-dependent relationship with the introduction and coating of the antimicrobial peptide ε-polylysine (EPL). EPL exhibited a dual role in enhancing bacterial binding and disrupting bacterial membranes, thereby increasing heat transfer efficiency and reducing bacterial resistance to photothermal ablation. The core strategy of this study was to exploit the combined membranolytic-photothermal effect of EPL and V 2 C by extensively applying EPL while regulating V 2 C nanosheets usage to prevent overheating. This approach aims to achieve potent bactericidal efficacy through photothermal therapy below 60 °C. Consequently, we developed dissolving microneedles incorporated with V 2 C nanosheets, where EPL served as the antimicrobial agent and primary matrix, increasing its loading capacity and minimizing the need for inactive excipients. Notably, this microneedle achieved a 99.9 % reduction in the abundance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus on infected skin after a single application and resulted in a 92-fold reduction in the bacterial load compared to the group treated with commercial Bactroban ointment, with no apparent toxicity to the mice.

In-situ synthesis of MXene/polyimide nanocomposite with enhanced thermal and high temperature tribological performance

Suhang Hou,Libo Wang,Lina Huang,Bo Wang,Weiwei Zhang,Jian Xie,Yihang Feng,Xinxin Cao,Aiguo Zhou

Polyimide (PI) is well known for its excellent thermal stability and mechanical strength, but its limited thermal conductivity and tribological performance restrict broader applications under harsh conditions. In this work, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets were incorporated into a PI matrix via in-situ polymerization to fabricate high-performance Ti 3 C 2 T x /PI nanocomposites with uniform filler dispersion. The thermal conductivity of the composite reached 1.99 W m −1  K −1 at 20 wt% MXene loading—an increase of 123% over pure PI. The thermal degradation temperature at 10% weight loss (T d10 ) also improved from 577.6 °C to 587.0 °C. Additionally, both storage modulus (E s ) and glass transition temperature (T g ) increased, indicating improved rigidity and thermal resistance. Tribological tests at room temperature and 200 °C revealed that the addition of 5 wt% MXene effectively reduced the coefficient of friction (COF) by 6.52% and 5.37%, respectively. The wear rate was also significantly reduced—by 83.41% at room temperature and 39.66% at 200 °C. These enhancements are attributed to the formation of a continuous and robust transfer film composed of MXene, oxides, and friction-induced organic products. This work provides a promising route for high-performance PI-based composites with improved thermal and tribological functionalities.

Phase change composites enhanced by gold nanorods decorated MXene for efficient photothermal conversion and storage

Ruijin Fan,Guanwang Chen,Nianben Zheng,Zhiqiang Sun

Gold nanorods (AuNRs)-doped phase change materials (PCMs) hold great promise for alleviating the instability and imbalance of solar energy due to their exceptional energy storage density and adaptability. However, their poor full-spectrum light absorption and inferior stability lead to insufficient photothermal conversion efficiency. Herein, we devise functional PCMs with synergistic reinforcement of light absorption and photothermal conversion through the in-situ growth of AuNRs on the MXene surface. The results indicate that the bimodal resonance effect of AuNRs and broad-spectrum absorption of MXene synergistically endow a 29.7 % increase in light absorption efficiencies over the pristine composites, which is superior to the sum of the two individually doped phase change composites (PCCs). Similarly, the photothermal storage and conversion efficiencies of the AuNRs/MXene-doped PCC are significantly enhanced by 36.6 % and 78.4 %, respectively. Furthermore, the fluorescence analysis reveals a prolonged fluorescence lifetime of 1.91 ns and a low quantum yield of 0.27 %, demonstrating efficient separation and migration of light-induced carriers and thermal dissipation via non-radiative relaxation, which is because the AuNRs and MXene synergistically enhance the localized surface plasmon resonance effect and the spectral absorption bands. This work offers fresh perspectives on the development of advanced photothermal PCMs for efficient solar thermal applications.

Synergistic plasmon resonance hybridization of iron-dispersed MoO3−x/MXene for enhanced nitrogen photothermal reduction

Ying Tang,Dongsheng Xie,Xiaomin Guo,Lining Fang,Hui Zeng,Zebao Rui

Plasmonic photochemical N 2 fixation has received widespread attention owing to the attractive plasmonic enhancement effects in improving solar-to-NH 3 conversion efficiency. However, the weak N 2 adsorption affinity in metallic plasmonic photocatalysts and insurmountable interfacial barriers in metal–semiconductor plasmonic photocatalysts lead to rapid charge carrier recombination instead of participating in N 2 -to-NH 3 conversion. Herein, a photothermal catalyst Fe-dispersed MoO 3− x /MXene with synergistic plasmon resonance hybridization structure is fabricated for photothermal N 2 fixation. The hybrid plasmon resonance effects derived from MXene and MoO 3− x induce a strong optical response across the ultraviolet–visible-near-infrared range and generation of energetic charge carriers, and the induced photothermal effect further accelerates electron extraction, transport, and surface reaction kinetics. Moreover, the abundant oxygen vacancies and Fe sites can intensify the N 2 adsorption and donate the energetic electrons into the anti-bonding system for the stimulative N  H coupling process. A high NH 3 formation rate of 87.1 μmol g −1 h −1 is achieved under solar-level illumination.

Enhancing wear resistance and mechanical property of epoxy coating via “roller wheel” liquid metal-MXene

Shuxin Zheng,Yuxiang Nie,Zhangzhong Wang,Xin Feng,Jiahua Zhu,Xiaohua Lu,Liwen Mu

This work presents a design of a unique “roller wheel” structure combining rigid MXene and flexible liquid metal (LM), aiming to construct an epoxy composite coating with simultaneous advanced mechanical strength and lubrication properties. The antiwear property of the epoxy composites is improved by 72.8% when the LM is 0.5 wt% and MXene is 0.03 wt%. The incorporation of LM-MXene improved the mechanical properties of the epoxy composite coating, resulting in an approximately 136.6% increase in elastic modulus. The unique “roller wheel” structure provides additional mechanical support and leads to lower adhesion between the MXene layers and LM. As a result, LM reduces the stripping and sliding of the interface between MXene layers during the friction process, further enhancing the lubrication performance of the epoxy composite coating.
