Low-cost and high-stable C-SiO2-PTFE gas diffusion membrane for ultrafast electrochemical NO2 sensor

Fengzhen Gao,Junxuan Liang,Faying Fan,Rui Wang,Benshuai Jiang,Kewei Zhang

Electrochemical gas sensors (EGSs) are the most effective means for detecting NO 2 gas in industry, while facing the issue of exorbitant cost due to the use of expensive Pt catalyst. Herein, well-dispersed C-SiO 2 into polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was adopt as high-stable gas diffusion membrane for ultrafast electrochemical NO 2 sensors. The nano-SiO 2 not only prevents material aggregation but also constructs porous networks between the gas diffusion electrode and gas molecules, providing a larger sensing area for high sensor performance. The fabricated sensor exhibits excellent response linearity, short response time, and high stability. As compared with commercial Pt/C electrode, the sensor response is improved by 170 %. Moreover, a multiple linear regression model was introduced to predict the response values of NO 2 in the range of 5–100 ppm, achieving only 1.5 % deviation from the real values. This work not only demonstrates the feasibility of non-precious metals in gas diffusion membranes but also provides guide for designing next-generation low-cost EGSs.

Dual-bioinspired fabrication of Janus Micro/nano PDA-PTFE/TiO2 membrane for efficient oil-water separation

Xiaotian Yu,Wei Zhu,Yongqiang Li,Wenhao Zhu,Xu Chen,Haitao Hao,Mengyao Yu,Yi Huang

Oily wastewater poses a severe threat to the environment and human health, and its disposition is a worldwide urgency. Rencently, Janus membranes has provided excellent selectivity for oil/water separation due to thin layers of different wettability on opposite sides. However, the fabrication of Janus asymmetric multilayer with simple syntheses and excellent stability has been proved challenging. Herein, a Janus polydopamine-polytetrafluoroethylene/titanium dioxide (PDA-PTFE/TiO 2 ) membranes were inspired by dual-bionic strategy (lotus leaf and mussel) and constructed by centrifugal spinning technology. The membranes showed significant separation efficiency for both water–oil mixtures and emulsions above 99%. Most notably, the separation efficiency of the membranes are still maintained above 98.5% after 24 h immersion in the corrosive solutio. Meanwhile, the nanofiber membrane has outstanding reusability, acid/alkali resistance, and mechanical stability. Therefore, the dual-bioinspired Janus micro/nano PTFE/TiO 2 membrane suggests a promising potential application for a sustainable and effective oil–water separation membrane in the future.

Polar aprotic solvent-resistant nanofiltration membranes generated by flexible-chain binding interfacial polymerization onto PTFE substrate

Xinzhu Zhang,Tingyu Li,Zhi Wang,Jixiao Wang,Song Zhao

The practical application of solvent-resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) still faces major challenges arising from the swelling and dissolution of substrates in organic solvents , especially in polar aprotic solvents such as dimethylformamide (DMF). To address these issues, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrates with strong resistance to organic solvents was employed to fabricate solvent-resistant nanofiltration composite membranes . A novel reverse flexible-chain binding interfacial polymerization (rFB-IP) was proposed to fabricate polyamide (PA) selective layer onto PTFE substrate with ultra-low surface energy. Specifically, aiming at strengthening the bonding force between the substrate and selective layer, PDMS was employed as a flexible-chain binder to generate a cross-linked network on the substrate surface and within the pores to generate an interpenetrating structure with PA selective layer. The as-prepared rPA-PDMS/mPTFE composite membrane exhibited DMF permeance of 0.4 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 , 97.1% rejection to Rose Bengal (RB), a stable performance during a filtration process for 120 h, or after being immersed in DMF for 120 d. Therefore, the rFB-IP technique successfully settled the issues of the application of PTFE substrate for composite membrane fabrication, and would have outstanding potential in the development of polar aprotic SRNF membrane .

Engineering Janus PTFE composite membranes with high anti-fouling and anti-scaling performance for membrane desalination

Jinxin Liu,Zinan Cheng,Haoyun Zhao,Dong Zou,Zhaoxiang Zhong

Development of membranes with robust anti-scaling and anti-fouling properties are highly required for vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) of saline solution. Therefore, we proposed a facile and benign strategy to construct a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-based membrane with an asymmetric surface wetting Janus structure consisting of a hydrophobic PTFE substrate and a thin hydrophilic hydrogel-like coating layer. The coated layer was made of the ionic cross-linked alginate and chitosan networks through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. Owing to the favorable swelling behavior and reduced water evaporation enthalpy of hydrogel top layer, the Janus composite membranes (noted as PTFE@CS/SAH) maintained the stable vapor flux of 32 L m −2 h −1 at 50 °C. Notably, the PTFE@CS/SAH sustained stable desalination efficiency for the treatment of challenging saline solution containing mineral oil or surfactant. Moreover, the long-term VMD operation test demonstrated that PTFE@CS/SAH exhibited strong scaling- and organic fouling- resistance facing simulated seawater. The simultaneous anti-scaling and anti-fouling mechanism of PTFE@CS/SAH have been systematically investigated and summarized as the synergistic effect of dense hydration layer, favorable electrostatic interaction as well as the robust capillary pressure imparted by coating layer. This work brings fresh insights for the controllable design and construction of Janus structured membranes for VMD application.

Bioinspired SiO2/PDA/PTFE membrane with high corrosion-resistance for long-term efficient oil/water separation

Yuanlu Xu,Yi Zhu,Chunyang Song,Yinan Chen,Chengwen Song,Zaijin You,Xinfei Fan

Oil spills and oily wastewater from various industries caused severe harm to the environment and human life. Then the effective treatment of oily wastewater is extremely urgent. Superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity membranes are considered as a favorable choice for the separation of oily wastewater. In this work, inspired by mussel adhesive protein chemistry , the SiO 2 /PDA/PTFE membrane (SPP) with hydrophilic chemical components and multi-scale rough structures was prepared by the facile combination of dopamine self-polymerization and sol-gel strategy. The hydrophilic SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) and polydopamine layer can be co-deposited on the membrane surface through Michael addition reaction, thus avoiding the problem of coating damage during oil/water separation. Moreover, the SiO 2 /PDA layer has hydrophilic groups and micro/nano rough structure, which makes the SPP membrane possess superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties. The properties of SPP membrane facilitate the formation of a hydration layer on the membrane surface, thus minimizing direct contact with oil droplets. During the experiment of oil/water separation, SPP membrane demonstrated excellent separation ability, the permeation flux of SPP membrane was measured to be 6183 and 4389 L m −2  h −1 for oil-water mixture and oil-in-water emulsion, respectively. The oil/water separation efficiency had also reached more than 99.7%. In addition, the SPP membrane exhibited brilliant chemical stability under harsh environments. It is worth mentioning that the SPP membrane showed superior cycling and anti-fouling performance in the separation process. These excellent performances demonstrate the great potential of SPP membranes in the industrial applications.

Study on the performance of CO2 capture from flue gas with ceramic and PTFE membrane contactors

Hongming Fu,Kaili Xue,Zhaohao Li,Heng Zhang,Dan Gao,Haiping Chen

Excessive CO 2 emissions contribute to global warming, which may cause potential threat to survival of humans and other creatures, and it is necessary to take effective measures to curb CO 2 emissions. Gas-liquid membrane contact CO 2 separation technology is an emerging CO 2 capture technology that combines advantages of membrane separation and chemical absorption . In this paper, differences of CO 2 capture performance between ceramic and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes with pore size of 10 nm and 100 nm are investigated comprehensively. The morphological structure, pore size distribution, wettability and membrane flux of ceramic and PTFE membranes are analyzed by membrane characterization. Moreover, with monoethanolamine (MEA) as absorbent, CO 2 capture performance under different operating parameters (e.g., absorber flow rate and temperature, gas flow rate and pressure) is investigated through experiments based on ceramic and PTFE membrane modules . The CO 2 capture efficiency of ceramic and PTFE membrane is 94.7% and 99.3%, respectively. However, the mass transfer rate of ceramic membrane is much higher than that of PTFE membrane. The results show that ceramic membrane exhibits favorable CO 2 capture performance under appropriate operation parameters. This paper will provide theoretical and technical references for subsequent industrial CO 2 capture applications.

PTFE-Modified Mn-Co-Based Catalytic Ceramic Filters with H2O Resistance for Low-Temperature NH3-SCR

Kun Li,Tao Zhou,Xinqiang Xu,Changye Han,Hua Zhang,Jiang Jin

Mn-Co-based catalysts were loaded to ceramic filters element by impregnation for the coprocessing of dust and nitrogen oxide (NOx) in flue gas. The influence of the Mn/Co ratio and loading on the catalytic performance was investigated. The Mn-Co-based catalytic ceramic filter with a Mn/Co molar ratio of 2/1 can achieve 99% NO conversion by selective catalytic reduction of NOxwith NH3(NH3-SCR) in the temperature range of 100−180 °C, but its resistance to H2O was relatively poor. The filter element was modified by PTFE to improve the H2O resistance. After modification, the catalytic ceramic filter showed superior resistance to H2O and SO2at low temperatures (100–180 °C) and satisfactory self-cleaning performance.Keywords:NH3-SCR;catalytic ceramic filter;PTFE-modified;H2O resistance

Xinle Yao,Sen Liu,Zhongying Ji,Rui Guo,Chufeng Sun,Yuxiong Guo,Xiaolong Wang,Qihua Wang

Three-dimensional (3D) target-region-lubrication printing of photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) filled with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), i.e., PSPI-PTFE, with excellent tribological properties for self-lubricating devices was realized by digital light processing of PSPI-PTFE ink and thermal post-treatment. The 3D-printed PSPI-PTFE composites exhibited the friction coefficients and wear rates sharply reduced by 88% and 98%, respectively, and good mechanical properties , thermal stability and interlayer bonding as well. Importantly, the surfaces with lubricating only in regions where needed were readily realized due to the layer-by-layer manufacturing manner of 3D printing . As proof-of-concept, a target-region-lubricating bearing was demonstrated successfully, which run stably with a speed ranged from 60 to 180 rpm/min, indicating that the 3D-printed PSPI-PTFE composites are suitable for fabricating devices with complex and special shapes.

Hydrophilic modification of PTFE microfiltration flat membrane by crosslinking OCMCS-PEI to enhance anti-fouling property

Jieqi Wang,Chengcai Li,Feng Wang,Bin Yu,Yunying Luo,Huanzhong Zeng,Hailin Zhu

In order to enhance the hydrophilicity and anti-fouling property of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) flat microfiltration membrane, the PTFE flat membrane was modified via cross-linking O-carboxymethyl chitosan (OCMCS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) with glutaraldehyde (GA). Membrane performance was characterized by Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), water contact angle and pure water flux. Results from ATR-FTIR and XPS showed that PEI and OCMCS were introduced into the modified PTFE membranes successfully. The modified PTFE membrane was endowed with excellent hydrophilicity compared with the original membrane by the result of increased pure water flux. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) static adsorption test and dynamic cross-flow fouling experiment results showed that the modified membrane has good anti-fouling ability. The pure water flux and the contact angle of the modified membranes changed with a variation in the time, GA concentration, OCMCS concentration, and OCMCS:PEI (mass ratio). It seemed that the optimal time, the concentration of OCMCS, the mass ratio of OCMCS and PEI, and the concentration of GA were 12 h, 5 g/L, 4:1 and 5 g/L, respectively.

Hydrophobic interface engineering of nickel hydroxide for efficient electrocatalytic fatty alcohol oxidation coupled with hydrogen production

Ruiqi Du,Rui Jia,Bingjie Yuan,Zemao Chen,Kaizheng Zhang,Kaiqi Nie,Binhang Yan,Yi Cheng

Electrocatalysis has emerged as a sustainable approach for the selective oxidation of fatty alcohols to fatty acids, circumventing the environmental concerns associated with conventional routes. However, the low aqueous solubility of hydrophobic fatty alcohols presents a major challenge. While nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH) 2 ) serves as a cost-effective catalyst for alcohol oxidation, its hydrophilic nature limits substrate accessibility and mass transport, causing sluggish kinetics and competing oxygen evolution. Herein, we propose a hydrophobic interface engineering strategy via co-electrodeposition of Ni(OH) 2 with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), fabricating the composite electrode (ED-Ni(OH) 2 -PTFE). The optimized electrode achieves 95% Faradaic efficiency for octanoic acid at 1.5 V vs. RHE, with a production rate 2–3 times higher than pristine Ni(OH) 2 . Mechanistic studies combining in situ Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence imaging, and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations reveal that PTFE selectively enriches octanol at the electrode-electrolyte interface by modulating interfacial hydrophobicity. A continuous-flow microreactor integrating anodic octanol oxidation with cathodic hydrogen evolution reduces cell voltage by ∼100 mV, achieving simultaneous fatty acid and hydrogen production. This work highlights the critical role of hydrophobic interfacial microenvironment design in organic electrosynthesis, offering a promising strategy for upgrading fatty alcohols under mild conditions.

Fabrication of a High-Stability Cross-Linked Quaternized Poly(epichlorolydrin)/PTFE Composite Membrane via a Facile Route

Jian Hu,Dongliang Wan,Wenguang Zhu,Langhuan Huang,Shaozao Tan,Xiang Cai,Xiuju Zhang

A novel cross-linked quaternized composite anion-exchange membrane based on poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) was prepared by a facile route. First, PECH was cross-linked with 2-methylimidazole and combined with a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane to form cross-linked PECH/PTFE (CPECH/PTFE). Then, CPECH/PTFE was quaternized by 1-methylimidazole to obtain cross-linked quaternized PECH/PTFE (CQPECH/PTFE). 1H NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic data indicated that CQPECH was successfully synthesized, and the CQPECH/PTFE membrane had a dense and homogeneous structure demonstrated by the field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the use of 2-methylimidazole as the cross-link agent could avoid the solubility of the composite membrane in water and dimethyl sulfoxide. With an increase of 2-methylimidazole, the solubility of the PECH ionomer was decreased. M-3, one of the CQPECH/PTFE membranes, showed good thermal properties (stable below 250 °C under an N2 atmosphere), excellent mechanical strength (a tensile strength of 67.3 MPa), moderate water uptake of 45.3%, and very low swelling degree of 9.01% at 30 °C. Besides, M-3 showed a hydroxide conductivity of up to 27 mS/cm and good long-term stability in a 1 M KOH solution at 60 °C for 15 days. In addition, a single H2/O2 fuel-cell test using M-3 at 50 °C indicated a peak power density of 23 mW/cm2. These results suggested that the CQPECH/PTFE membrane had a good perspective for application in an alkaline fuel cell.

Combustion/decomposition characteristics of 3D-printed Al/CuO, Al/Fe2O3, Al/Bi2O3 and Al/PTFE hollow filaments

Lin Zhong,Xu Zhou,Xinying Huang,Dawei Zheng,Yaofeng Mao,Ruihao Wang,Dunju Wang

In recent decades, the preparation of various metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) has been widely reported in pursuit of excellent reactivity and safety. However, there is still relatively little research on structural energetic materials (EMs) through 3D printing of MICs inks. In this work, the hollow filaments with different MICs formulas were prepared by 3D printing using a core-shell nozzle. The morphology, thermal decomposition and gas-generation performance of the filaments were characterized, and the different combustion stages of the filaments were analyzed. The results show that the hollow filaments exhibit shorter unsteady combustion time and significantly increased steady flame propagation rate compared with solid filaments. For the hollow filaments of Al/CuO/F2311 formula (15 wt % of F2311), the unsteady combustion time is as low as 0.65 ms, and the steady flame propagation rate reaches 206.936 g/s. Thermal analysis and constant-volume combustion tests show that Al/CuO/F2311 formula provides the lowest thermal decomposition onset temperature (288 °C) and the best gas-generation performance (peak pressure: 0.191 MPa, pressurization rate: 12.337 MPa/s) compared with other composites.
