In this study, two antimicrobial food packaging films were prepared by using gelatin/sodium alginate (GSA) as the film substrate and introducing benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) and eugenol (EUG), respectively. The incorporation of BITC and EUG increased the tensile strength of the GSA film by 66.7% and 32.2%, respectively, while reducing the elongation at break by 44.9% and 39.8%, respectively. The water contact angle increased by 50.4% and 14.9%, and the water vapor permeability decreased by 65.4% and 59.2%, respectively, indicating that the addition of BITC and EUG improved the water resistance of the GSA film. In addition, the incorporation of BITC and EUG reduced the light transmittance of the GSA film. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the surface inhomogeneity of the GSA film improved after the addition of BITC and EUG. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that BITC and EUG interacted with the GSA matrix and affected the structural and thermal characteristics of the composite films. Application tests on cherries and beef have shown that BITC-GSA and EUG-GSA films delayed quality deterioration during storage. Overall, these films show promising potential as biodegradable active packaging materials for food preservation. These two films were applied to cherries and beef, effectively extending their shelf life and demonstrating the potential of these films as food packaging materials.

Effects of the eugenol-chitosan nanoemulsion as an edible coating on the quality of hairtail ( Trichiurus haumela ) during storage at 4 °C were evaluated. For all samples, such parameters as pH, thiobarbituric acid (TBA), total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), water holding capacity (WHC), electrical conductivity (EC), total bacteria count (TVC) and sensory were examined periodically. The results demonstrated that eugenol-chitosan nanoemulsion coating showed better preservative effects than chitosan nanoemulsion alone. Therefore, a coating based on eugenol-chitosan nanoemulsion could be regarded as an effective food-grade biopreservative to maintain the quality of hairtail fish and prolong its shelf life during chilled storage.

The implementation plan of extending the shelf life of food while ensuring food safety is playing an increasingly important role in promoting global solutions to food waste. Here, we have logically created a new eugenol nanoemulsion to sense spoilage and extend the shelf life. The nano lotion (Eu/SA) was loaded with sodium alginate nanoparticles as carrier, eugenol as antibacterial agent and antioxidant. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) was utilized concurrently as an indicator by simply mixed with Eu/SA nanoemulsion, then physically deposited on a commercial filter membrane to create smart fluorescent labels. Shrimp with and without the Eu/SA nanoemulsion coating had their freshness monitored using a non-contact tagging technique. And through smartphone integrated with RGB (red/green/blue) analysis for digitization, it was found that the RGB of uncoated shrimp was greater than that of treated shrimp. Additionally, without coating treatment, thiobarbituric acid (TBA), pH and viable bacterial count (TVC) of Shrimp all exceed the established. Eu/SA nanoemulsion offers a more appealing monitoring and preservation integration platform for the food safety industry.

Vortex-assisted liquid-liquid micro-extraction (VALLME) was applied for eliminating the matrix effect and improving the sensitivity of eugenol determination by headspace solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) in fish samples. Under the optimum condition of VALLME and HS-SPME, the good linearity of eugenol in fish samples was obtained in the range from 15.0 to 750.0 μg/kg. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) for eugenol were 0.5 and 1.5 μg/kg, respectively. The recovery of eugenol was ranging from 95.4 to 119.9% and the relative standard deviation (RSD %) for eugenol was lower than 20%. The results turned out that VALLME followed HS-SPME-GC-MS was a simple, rapid, and accurate method for the determination of eugenol in fish samples. The levels of eugenol in different parts of real samples were tested by the developed method, and the results concluded that the developed method was compatible with GC-MS analysis with long-term application and had excellent repeatability, linearity, and sensitivity.

Objective In this study, we investigated the effect and mechanism of action of eugenol on oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-induced abnormal proliferation and migration of human vascular smooth muscle cells (HVSMCs).Methods HVSMCs were treated with 100 ug/mL ox-LDL for 24 hours to establish a cell model. After 1-hour pretreatment, eugenol at concentrations of 5, 25, and 50 uM was added. Cell viability was assessed using an MTT assay, PCNA expression was detected using Western blot, cell cycle distribution was analyzed using flow cytometry, and cell migration ability was evaluated using wound healing and Transwell migration assays. To investigate the mechanisms, Ang II receptors were inhibited by 1000 nM valsartan, MFG-E8 was knocked down by shRNA, MCP-1 was inhibited by siRNA, and MFG-E8 was overexpressed using plasmids. Results The findings from this study elucidated the stimulatory impact of ox-LDL on the proliferation and functionality of HVSMCs. Different concentrations of eugenol effectively mitigated the enhanced activity of HVSMCs induced by ox-LDL, with 50 uM eugenol exhibiting the most pronounced inhibitory effect. Flow cytometry and Western blot results showed ox-LDL reduced G1 phase cells and increased PCNA expression, while 50 uM eugenol inhibited ox-LDL-induced HVSMC proliferation. In wound healing and Transwell migration experiments, the ox-LDL group showed larger cell scratch filling and migration than the control group, both of which were inhibited by 50 uM eugenol. Inhibiting the Ang II/MFG-E8/MCP-1 signaling cascade mimicked eugenol’s effects, while MFG-E8 overexpression reversed eugenol’s inhibitory effect. Conclusion Eugenol can inhibit the proliferation and migration of ox-LDL-induced HVSMCs by inhibiting Ang II/MFG-E8/MCP-1 signaling cascade, making it a potential therapeutic drug for atherosclerosis.

Two series of renewable nipagin and eugenol-based copoly(ether ester)s, PDN1 1− x E1 x and PDN1 1− x E2 x ( x = 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%), were prepared in the melt with 1,10-decanediol as a comonomer. The synthesized poly(ether ester)s have weight-average molecular weights ( M w ) in the range of 20,400–37,200 g mol −1 , and dispersity ( D ) values between 1.7 and 1.9. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) reveal that all the poly(ether ester)s exhibit a two-step degradation mechanism with an initial degradation temperature above 350 °C. Results from differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) analyses demonstrate that the poly(ether ester)s are all semicrystalline materials with glass transition temperature ( T g ) values ranging between −21.3 and −8.3 °C. The insertions of phenoxy-ether linkage and eugenol-derived composition have significant influence on the T g , crystallinity, Young's modulus, and tensile strength, as well as the toughening effect and degradability. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background Based on the prodrug principle, aspirin and eugenol, as starting precursors, were esterified to synthesize aspirin eugenol ester (AEE). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antithrombotic effect of AEE in an animal disease model. In order to compare the therapeutic effects of AEE and its precursors, aspirin, eugenol and a combination of aspirin and eugenol were designed at the same molar quantities as the AEE medium dose in the control group. Methods After oral administration of AEE (dosed at 18, 36 and 72 mg/kg) for seven days, rats were treated with k-carrageenan to induce tail thrombosis. Following the same method, aspirin (20 mg/kg), eugenol (18 mg/kg) and 0.5 % CMC-Na (30 mg/kg) were administered as control drug. Different drug effects on platelet aggregation, hemorheology, TXB2/6-keto-PGF1α ratio and blood biochemistry were studied. Results AEE significantly inhibited ADP and AA-induced platelet aggregation in vivo. AEE also significantly reduced blood and plasma viscosity. Moreover, AEE down-regulated TXB2 and up-regulated 6-keto-PGF1α, normalizing the TXB2/6-keto-PGF1α ratio and blood biochemical profile. In comparison with aspirin and eugenol, AEE produced more positive therapeutic effects than its precursors under the same molar quantity. Conclusion It may be concluded that AEE was a good candidate for new antithrombotic and antiplatelet medicine. Additionally, this study may help to understand how AEE works on antithrombosis in different ways.

Aiming at developing more biocompatible and economic separation platforms, aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) composed of deep eutectic solvents (DES) and tert-butanol were proposed for the first time. The effects of key factors such as the hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) properties and temperature on the phase-forming ability of DES/tert-butanol ABS were investigated. Meanwhile, syringic acid and eugenol mixtures were selected as model biomolecules to evaluate the efficiency of DES/tert-butanol ABS to use as liquid–liquid extraction systems. The results indicated that DES components migrated preferentially to the bottom phase while tert-butanol was concentrated in the top phase. The more hydrophilic HBD or lower temperature was responsible for greater efficiency to induce the formation of DES/tert-butanol ABS. The reason for phase separation was the incompatibility of the hydrogen-bond acceptor (HBA) and HBD with tert-butanol in aqueous solution, where the higher hydrophilic HBD enriched favorably in the lower phase, allowing for the formation of the DES/tert-butanol ABS. The selective separation of syringic acid and eugenol was a consequence of the HBD characters, temperature, and tie-lines length of the ABS, and they could be greatly separated by using the ABS composed of betaine-xylitol (DES) and tert-butanol at 298.15 K. The highest extraction efficiency of syringic acid and eugenol was 91.64 and 97.62%, respectively. Further, syringic acid and eugenol as well as DES can be recovered and reused by using water as the antisolvent and the vacuum distillation method. This study may be expected to lay a solid foundation for the expansion of DES-based ABS and selective separation of similar biomolecules.

Anaesthetics are widely used in aquaculture as a method of stress relief. However, few studies have reported the influence of anaesthetics on the immune system of fish. Therefore, in the present study, we selected two different anaesthetics, MS-222 (100 mg/L) and eugenol (20 mg/L), to anaesthetize crucian carp and analyse the transcriptome. It was found that over 137 million high-quality reads were generated and de novo assembled into a final set of 97,556 unigenes. A total of eight differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to the immune response were co-expressed in the two anaesthetic groups. GO and the KEGG revealed that these genes functioned primarily to enrich antigen processing and presentation pathways, including MHCI , MHCIα , p-MHCIIα , P-MHCIIα , CD74 , MHCII antigen and MHCII antigenα . Moreover, LRRFIP2 was found be associated with the immune response. Consistent with the transcriptome findings, qPCR verified the changes in the relative level of expression of these genes. Furthermore, long-term exposure to low concentrations of MS-222 (30 mg/L) and eugenol (8 mg/L) showed an impact on these immune genes. In conclusion, anaesthetics used in high or low concentrations for treatment and transport could affect the immune system in fish species. While eugenol was associated with an earlier activation of immune gene expression, MS-222 exhibited more significant effects on the immune response. These findings improve the understanding of the mechanisms of anaesthetics on immune damage and will be of great value for future studies involving anaesthetic selection and treatment for fish.
