The wide-spread overuse and misuse of antibiotics has led to major risks to human health, which demands breakthrough technologies for elimination of antibiotics from water streams. Membrane-based water purification has drawn substantial interest for this purpose. However, high permeance and high antibiotic-removal efficiency remain extremely challenging. In this work, the use of polyphenol-based nanoengineering to functionalize conventional microporous membranes capable of ultrafast removal of ten different antibiotics in an in-line flowthrough purification system is explored. The high adsorption kinetics of these nanocoatings enable a record-high permeance (9,774 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) with exceptional removal rate and efficiency, at a relatively low energy cost (0.09 kWh m −3 ), even in a real-world wastewater treatment. Molecular dynamics simulations provide detailed insights into the role of polyphenol-based nanocoatings and their multiple molecular interactions with antibiotics. This work provides a promising and sustainable platform for engineering the next-generation adsorption-based membranes for clean water production.

Metal-polyphenol coordination networks have been actively explored as a facile, rapid and green platform for developing materials. In this study, novel antifouling hybrid membranes are successfully prepared via in situ assembling metal-polyphenol coordination networks and are proposed for oil/water separation application. Based on the coordination-driven cross-linking and assembling of Ti IV and TA within polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane matrix, TA-Ti coordination networks are successfully introduced and uniformly distributed in the as-prepared PVDF/TA-Ti membranes. The effects of the embedded TA-Ti coordination networks on both surface morphologies and pore structures of PVDF/TA-Ti membranes are investigated. The surface chemical compositions of PVDF/TA-Ti membranes are analyzed by energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The water contact angle analysis and DSC study on bound water content reveal the outstanding hydration capability of PVDF/TA-Ti membranes, indicating the higher underwater superoleophobicity and antifouling property of PVDF/TA-Ti membranes. The as-prepared PVDF/TA-Ti membranes exhibit remarkably improved antifouling performance with the flux recover ability increased to a maximum level about 100% for the filtration of oil-in-water emulsions. Overall, this study highlights the promising antifouling potential of TA-Ti coordination networks in designing antifouling membranes, and proposes a facile in situ hybridization method for preparing antifouling membranes derived from versatile metal-polyphenol coordination networks.

Nanomaterials offer enhanced stability and functionality for photothermal agents; however, their efficacy is often limited by suboptimal cellular internalization and photothermal conversion efficiency. To address these challenges, we designed a multicomponent inorganic–organic hybrid photothermal agent that integrates a virus-mimicking morphology and stimuli-responsive components. Gold nanostars (GNS) were functionalized with a pH-responsive epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) polyphenol network, followed by in situ growth of CuS, yielding star-shaped GEC nanoassemblies with a rough surface. This biomimetic design leverages (i) the plasmonic photothermal properties of the GNS core, (ii) the acid-triggered disassembly of the EGCG network (mimicking viral protein shells), and (iii) the in situ synthesized CuS layer exhibiting a virus-mimetic rough surface and targeting capability, which enhances near-infrared light absorption and promotes endocytosis by the target cells. The synergistic integration of GNS and CuS significantly enhanced the photothermal conversion efficiency. Under tumor acidic conditions, the EGCG network disintegrated, leading to the shedding of the CuS shell and a reduction in overall size, which facilitated deep tissue penetration. Structural characterization confirmed the hierarchical architecture and pH-responsive size transition. Compared to unmodified GNS, the cellular uptake of GEC by 4T1 cells was approximately 4.5-fold higher, attributable to its virus-like rough surface, acid-responsive disintegration, and targeting ability. This work demonstrates a rational biomimetic strategy for engineering stimuli-responsive inorganic–organic hybrids with optimized photothermal performance through biomimetic component engineering.

The impact of different doses of protocatechuic acid (PCA), caffeic acid (CFA) and apigenin (AP) on the structural and in vitro digestive characteristics of pork myofibrillar proteins (MP). Results showed that the formation of complexes led to a 9 %–23.5 % increase in turbidity compared with the control group. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that polyphenols caused a static quenching of MP and altered the tertiary structure, which exposed the MP in a hydrophilic environment ( H 0 = 45.91) as shown by a redshift of 14 nm for the MP/CFA sample at high concentration (100 μmol/g). The addition of PCA/CFA/AP promoted the molar ellipticity of CD decrease from −12 mdeg to −16.4 mdeg, indicating that the MP molecular tended to be disordered. Molecular docking and thermodynamic studies confirmed that the formation of the MP/AP complex was mainly through hydrogen bonds, whereas hydrophobic interactions were the primary driving force for MP/PCA and MP/CFA samples. Furthermore, the interaction between polyphenols and MP enhanced the digestive properties of MP as manifested by decreasing the particle size from 851 nm (control) to 594 nm (MP/AP-100), and weakened the high molecular weight bands (170 kDa) observed in SDS-PAGE. The binding of polyphenols to MP at low concentration (20 μmol/g protein) was more conducive to the in vitro gastrointestinal digestion of MP compared to the high dosage.

Developing adaptable adhesives that can resist the rigors of environments is essential to many applications but remains challenging. Herein, inspired by polyphenol-enabled adaptable mussel adhesives, an efficient strategy is proposed for fabricating self-adaptable bio-based adhesives (BIOAs). This approach rationally leverages low-molecule-weight tea polyphenols (TPs) to mediate camellia meal (CM, a low-cost biological macromolecules) systems. Benefiting from TPs' superior molecular compliance, the incorporation enables a highly adaptable CM network that combines structural reliability and dynamicity, providing the resultant adhesive with high-strength yet multi-purposed adhesion (up to 1.12 MPa on wood substrates even under hydrothermal conditions at 100 °C), long-term stability (retaining 0.88 MPa on wood substrates after immersing in water for 30 days), tolerance to harsh environments (i. e., temperature, pH, salt and organic solvent), and resistance to mildew and flame. This TP-mediated design could be extended to more BIOA systems with much-enhanced adhesion properties, offering a promising alternative to construct adaptable adhesives with excellent performances for the better response to complex application scenarios.

While ferroptotic therapy has emerged as a promising strategy for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), cellular ferroptosis resistance poses a significant challenge. Given the compensatory up-regulation of dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) following glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4, the primary ferroptosis defender) inhibition, concurrent GPX4/DHODH suppression has been recently revealed essential for ferroptosis sensitization. However, DHODH, as a pivotal nucleotide metabolism enzyme, might exert complex even contradictory effects on tumor ferroptotic therapy, which are poorly understood. This work reveals for the first time that brequinar (BQR, a DHODH inhibitor) exerts dual-edged effects on ferroptotic therapy against 4 T1 cells: besides its well-known disruption of cellular redox balance for ferroptosis sensitization, BQR-intervened pyrimidine metabolism blocks tumor growth, accompanied by up-regulation of lipid droplets (LDs), which paradoxically aggravates ferroptosis resistance. To address this dilemma, we pioneer the combination of DGAT1 inhibition for lipid metabolism remodeling. As a proof-of-concept, we fabricate a BQR/A922500 (a DGAT1 inhibitor) co -encapsulated metal-polyphenol network (named AB@HA-TA/Fe) by one-pot method for robust targeted ferroptotic therapy of TNBC. AB@HA-TA/Fe triggers cellular ferroptosis by boosting iron level and dual DHODH/GPX4 suppression; and the combination of A922500 rescues BQR-induced LD up-regulation, reversing ferroptosis resistance. The biosafety and ferroptotic therapy efficacy of AB@HA-TA/Fe are verified both in vitro and in vivo . This work helps to accelerate DHODH inhibitors' clinical translation by elucidating previously overlooked mechanisms limiting DHODH inhibitors' efficacy and proposing synchronous DGAT1 inhibition as a countermeasure. The fabricated nanoweapon AB@HA-TA/Fe presents a novel dual metabolic intervention paradigm for ferroptosis sensitization, proposing an innovative framework for ferroptosis-integrated combination therapy of TNBC.

This work reports a kind of novel antioxidant Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs; with an oil fraction, ϕ > 0.74) stabilized by soy β -conglycinin ( β -CG) and polyphenol complex nanoparticles, as outstanding protective containers for lipophilic nutraceuticals. The nanoparticles with a representative polyphenol ((-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate; EGCG) encapsulated were fabricated through an ethanol-mediated dissociation and re-assembly process of β -CG, with greater particle size and higher surface hydrophilicity observed at higher initial EGCG concentrations. Using these co-assembled nanoparticles as sole stabilizers, a kind of HIPE gels with similar gel stiffness and microstructure, could be easily fabricated at ϕ = 0.8 and a protein concentration in the aqueous phase of 1.0 wt% using polyunsatuated fatty acid-rich flaxseed oil as the dispersed phase. These HIPE gels were extraordinarily stable against heating or long-term storage, but susceptible to freeze-thawing. The as-fabricated HIPEs showed an excellent protection to β -carotene (encapsulated in oil phase) against heating, as well as an inhibition of lipid oxidation. The oxidation protection was in an EGCG concentration dependent manner. The results would be of interest for providing a novel strategy to fabricate functionalized Pickering HIPEs as potential containers or delivery systems for lipophilic nutraceuticals.

Membrane separation technology offers a green, efficient and energy-saving approach for biogas upgrading. Membranes with high selectivity and high permeability are the key to achieve high performance. Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs) materials have shown excellent gas permeability but low selectivity which limits their practical application. Herein, a polyphenol, tannic acid, was coated on the PIM-1 membrane surface by a facile dipping method to fabricate composite membranes. Tannic acid containing a large number of polar oxygen-containing groups (quinone, phenolic hydroxyl) self-polymerized on the membrane surface to form a CO 2 -philic, defect-free and thin layer. The CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of the resultant composite membranes was increased after tannic acid coating while the permeability remained comparable to or even higher than pristine PIM-1 membrane, exceeding the reported 2008 upper bound.

Refractory diabetic wounds are a devastating and rapidly growing clinical problem, which is associated with high incidence rates, mortality, and recurrence rates. Therapeutic angiogenesis in wound tissues is essential to the healing of diabetic wounds. However, the presence of excessive oxidative stress in diabetic wounds hinders angiogenesis, and conventional anti-oxidative approaches are inefficient to compensate for the systematically impaired angiogenesis. Here, a multifunctional supramolecular hyaluronic acid hydrogel dressing for diabetic wounds is successfully designed and constructed (GHPM). The GHPM hydrogel features outstanding properties, including excellent tissue adhesion, antibacterial ability, conductivity, and antioxidant properties. Based on the dynamic crosslinking structure, the GHPM hydrogel also presents adequate injectable and self-healing capabilities, which play a vital role in covering irregular or deep wounds. Additionally, diabetic wounds treated with GHPM hydrogel showed a significant acceleration of wound closure by preventing wound infection, reducing oxidative stress, and accelerating collagen deposition. More interestingly, the combination of electrical stimulation and GHPM hydrogel can effectively promote angiogenesis and neurogenesis, further accelerating diabetic wound healing in an all-around way. This advanced collaborative strategy opens a new avenue in treating diabetic wounds.

Bacterial infection and oxidative stress represent significant clinical challenges in wound management. Upon tissue damage, bacterial colonization triggers excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and persistent inflammation, forming a vicious cycle that impairs wound healing. The development of nanomedicines integrating antibacterial and antioxidant functionalities is a promising therapeutic strategy to concurrently combat pathogen invasion and oxidative damage. Herein, we fabricated a core–shell nanoplatform (PB@Se@TA-Fe) through a green and mild strategy, where tannic acid (TA) plays a dual role: reducing Na2SeO3 to generate an intermediate selenium layer on Prussian blue (PB) cores and coordinating with Fe2+ to form a stabilizing polyphenolic metal network as the outer shell. This TA-Fe shell firmly stabilizes the Se interlayer, yielding structurally robust nanoparticles with a sandwich-like architecture. The core-interlayer-shell configuration enables synergistic integration of all components, conferring superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like, catalase (CAT)-like, glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like, and peroxidase (POD)-like enzymatic activities for ROS elimination. Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the nanoplatform exhibits photothermal conversion ability and broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In vitro, PB@Se@TA-Fe alleviates H2O2-induced oxidative damage. In a bacterial infection wound model, the nanoplatform significantly accelerates wound healing by eliminating pathogens and reducing oxidative stress, indicating its potential for oxidative stress-related disorders and infectious wounds.

This study proposes a bio-inspired in-situ cross-linking strategy to address the critical issue of swelling and structural instability in MXene two-dimensional (2D) lamellar membranes. By anchoring gallic acid (GA) onto MXene nanosheets via hydrogen bonding and subsequently coordinating cross-linking with Al 3+ ions, a robust three-dimensional GA-Al network is constructed between the nanosheets. This approach effectively transforms the inherently swellable, loosely stacked MXene assembly into a coordination-crosslinked reinforced lamellar architecture, successfully yielding structurally stable MXene/GA-Al composite membranes with excellent separation performance. The GA-Al network significantly suppressed interlayer swelling (the dry-wet d-spacing difference is only 1.2 Å), enabling precise sub-nanometer channel tuning, mitigating interlayer defects, and improving surface hydrophilicity. The optimized membrane achieved over 99% rejection of Congo red (CR), a pure water permeability of 120.0 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , and outstanding separation factors of 1105 and 1403 for CR/NaCl and CR/Na 2 SO 4 mixed solutions, respectively. These results outperform most documented 2D lamellar and nanofiltration membranes. This work offers a new design paradigm for developing high-performance, anti-swelling 2D lamellar separation membranes.

In aqueous zinc-ion batteries, the growth of dendrite, hydrogen evolution reaction, and corrosion on the Zn anode result in rapid performance degradation and poor cycling stability, which significantly impede their commercial application. Herein, a tea polyphenol-zinc ion complex (denoted as Tp-Zn) is used as an electrolyte additive to reshape the Zn 2+ solvation structure and guide uniform zinc deposition. Tp-Zn interacts with water molecules via hydrogen bonding of hydroxyl groups, weakening the Zn 2+ -H 2 O solvation sheath and suppressing water-related side reactions. Moreover, Tp-Zn induces preferential Zn deposition, contributing to homogeneous zinc deposition. As a result, the Zn//Zn symmetric cell assembled with Tp-Zn achieves an ultra-long cycle life of over 4000 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 and more than 1300 h at 2.0 mA cm −2 . The Zn//Cu asymmetric cell can maintain stable plating and stripping for more than 900 cycles at 1.0 mA cm −2 , and the Zn//NaVO full cell maintains high specific capacity during stable cycling. This green and non-toxic Tp-Zn additive effectively stabilizes the Zn anode interface and enhances cycling durability, providing a new reference for the exploration of the commercialization of ZIBs.
