Preparation of a SiO2@PDA/CS Coated Stainless Steel Mesh with Superhydrophilicity and Underwater Superoleophobicity for Oil–Water Separation

Zhuangzhuang Zhang,Lingling Ma,Yang Shao,Diandou Xu,Min Luo

To tackle the environmental challenges associated with industrial oily wastewater discharges and recurrent marine oil spill incidents, developing high-efficiency oil–water separation technologies represents a pressing environmental challenge. This research presents a novel design approach comprising the deposition of a stable SiO2anchoring layer followed by the fabrication of a PDA/CS crosslinked coating, thereby achieving successful construction of a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic (SH/UWSO) coating on stainless steel meshes (SSM). In the first step, SiO2microspheres were deposited via vapor deposition to create a micro-rough surface architecture. Subsequently, a dopamine/chitosan (DA/CS) reaction solution was introduced to form a Polydopamine/chitosan (PDA/CS) coating, yielding a SiO2@PDA/CS-SSM separation membrane. The resulting membrane exhibited separation efficiencies surpassing 99% for various oil–water mixtures, achieving a flux of 1.24 × 105L·m−2·h−1in petroleum ether systems. Notably, the membrane maintained high efficiency and structural stability even after 25 separation cycles, immersion in strong acid and base solutions for 72 h, and 100 abrasion tests. The rational design of the anchoring and crosslinking layers endows SiO2@PDA/CS-SSM with high efficiency and stability, making it an effective oil–water separation material.

Mechanochemical In Situ Assembly of Organourea-Containing Ionic Polymers within Mesoporous SiO2 for Efficient CO2 Fixation to Cyclic Carbonates

Quanlan Liao,Wanzhen Du,Jialong Ou,Jianxin Cao,Lunbao Chen,Tianxiang Zhao

Mechanochemistry offers an environmentally benign and highly efficient route to heterogeneous catalysts. In this work, mesoporous SiO2 serves as both a ball-milling aid that enhances grinding efficiency and a porous support for the in situ generation and immobilization of organourea-containing ionic polymers. During the mechanochemical process, the polymers are assembled within the mesopores and onto the external surface of SiO2, thereby improving the accessibility of ionic active sites for catalysis. This solvent-free strategy eliminates the need for toxic organic solvents and significantly reduces synthesis time compared with conventional solvothermal or reflux routes that typically require several hours to days, while exploiting the synergistic interactions between the SiO2 support and the ionic polymer matrix. The optimized catalyst, denoted TEB-O@Si-8(50%), achieves 99% conversion of various epoxides to the corresponding cyclic carbonates under mild conditions (100 °C, 1 MPa CO2, 12 h) and retains high catalytic activity over five consecutive cycles. Kinetic studies and in situ FTIR spectroscopy reveal that urea and hydroxyl groups polarize the C–O bond of the epoxide through hydrogen bonding, while bromide ions facilitate nucleophilic ring-opening. This work overcomes the prolonged synthesis times and reliance on volatile solvents associated with conventional catalyst preparation and provides a sustainable, scalable route to high-performance heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 conversion.

Synergistic Al3 +/Y3+ stabilization of SiO2 glass network enabling SiCf/SiC composites with enhanced durability against high-temperature corrosion

Hui Huang,Xiaowu Chen,Liang Zhou,Jinshan Yang,Xiangyu Zhang,Yanmei Kan,Ping He,Hao Qin,Han Luo,Xiao You,Shaoming Dong

Despite the excellent mechanical properties of SiC f /SiC composites, the extremely harsh corrosion limits their durability as structural materials for high-temperature applications. Here, we propose a synergistic Al 3+ /Y 3+ stabilization strategy to achieve highly durable SiC f /SiC composites with enhanced mechanical stability. This is realized by constructing an Al/Y co-diffused SiC matrix, which can form a robust YAlSi x O y glass network under high-temperature atmospheric (40% H 2 O & 60% O 2 ) corrosion. The Al/Y co-diffused SiC f /SiC composites (SiC f /SiC-Al40Y) exhibit high bending strength retention of 98.5% after corrosion at 1200 ℃, as well as 78.9% up to 1300 ℃, significantly exceeding those of the counterparts without diffusion treatment. The improved mechanical stability is primarily attributed to the synergistic Al 3+ /Y 3+ stabilization of corrosion-induced SiO 2 glass network, which can suppress the matrix cracking and thus mitigate the corrosion. This work demonstrates the strategy of synergistic Al 3+ /Y 3+ stabilization for constructing SiC f /SiC composites with enhanced durability, offering an innovative concept to develop SiC f /SiC composites applicable at higher temperatures for thermo-structural applications.

Effect of Na2O on the crystallization behavior, structure, and chromium immobilization in CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–Cr2O3 glass–ceramics

Leibo Deng,Tianyi Li,Yahui Zhou,Wenjing Zhang

The harmless treatment of Cr-containing solid waste remains a critical environmental challenge. Herein, Cr 2 O 3 -doped CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 glass-ceramics with varying Na 2 O contents were prepared via a melting method. The study focuses on how Na 2 O regulates the glass network, crystallization behavior, and Cr immobilization efficiency. With increasing Na 2 O content, the degree of depolymerization (DOD) of the parent glass increases from 1.76 to 1.99, while the crystallization activation energy decreases accordingly. The optimal formulation is achieved at 1 wt% Na 2 O combined with a two-stage heat treatment (nucleation at 720 °C for 2 h, followed by crystallization at 850 °C for 2 h). Under these conditions, the glass-ceramic exhibits the lowest Cr leaching concentration of 0.031 mg/L, far below the regulatory limit of 5 mg/L. The dominant crystalline phases are diopside and a spinel solid solution, where Cr 3+ is stably incorporated into the spinel. These findings demonstrate that controlled Na 2 O addition provides an effective compositional lever for optimizing both crystallization kinetics and heavy metal immobilization, offering a sustainable pathway for valorizing Cr-containing wastes into high-performance glass-ceramics.

Phase Equilibria of the Yb2O3-MgO-SiO2 System at 1600°C and Implications for Environmental Barrier Coatings and Refractories

Sheng Li,Rui Zhang,Min Chen,Junjie Shi,Jing Xu,Yueyao Liu,Xiao Zhang,Zhuoying Lian,Yuyan Wu,Yandong Li,Jianzhong Li

Understanding the phase equilibria of the Yb 2 O 3 -MgO-SiO 2 system is crucial to reveal the coating-medium interaction mechanism and guide composition design. In the present work, the isothermal section of the Yb 2 O 3 -MgO-SiO 2 system at 1600°C in air was systematically constructed using high-temperature equilibrium quenching experiment combined with XRD, SEM, and EPMA analyses. Ten phase regions were identified, including one liquid-phase region, four two-phase regions, and five three-phase regions. Comparative analysis with the binary subsystems highlights the restricted solubility of Yb 2 O 3 in MgO (1.61 wt%) and the associated asymmetry, which are rationalized by crystallographic constraints and defect energetics. This study fills a critical knowledge gap and provides essential phase equilibria data for designing advanced Yb-silicate coatings with enhanced CMAS and corrosion resistance, as well as for developing MgO-based refractory materials.

Modulating the negative permittivity of metacomposites by adjusting inductance and capacitance with the incorporation of Ag and Ag@SiO2

Min Chen,Lixue Xu,YanMin Wang

Metacomposites that have tunable negative permittivity show broad application potential in the domain of electromagnetics. In this study, the impregnation method was employed to successfully synthesize and impregnate silver (Ag) and silica-coated Ag (Ag@SiO₂) nanoparticles into a carbon cloth (CC) matrix. The content ratio of Ag and Ag@SiO₂ was regulated to adjust the negative permittivity of the composites. The results showed that a conductive network gradually formed in the composites and plasma oscillations occurred with the increase of Ag content, which thereby increased alternating current (AC) conductivity and the absolute values of negative permittivity. After Ag@SiO 2 nanoparticles were added, however, the conductive network was disrupted, which reduced electrical conductivity. Ag@SiO₂ regulated the frequency dispersion behavior of negative permittivity through Lorentz resonance. Thus, negative permittivity and frequency responses were successfully adjusted via the adjustment of the ratio between the inductive (Ag) and the capacitive (Ag@SiO₂) components in the composites. The findings offer a novel approach for designing lightweight metacomposites with precisely adjustable negative permittivity and frequency response characteristics.

Spherical SiO2/nano-BN multifunctional superhydrophobic coatings: enhancing thermal conductivity and water vapor resistance in electronics for Aero-engine

Yingping Yang,Zuozhu Yin,Yining Zhang,Suhang Zhang,Xiangyu Lan,Yuhua Chen,Zhen Hong,Jilin Xu,Mingshan Xue

The escalating integration of aviation electronic systems has exacerbated thermal dissipation challenges and water vapor condensation issues, significantly compromising equipment longevity under complex operational conditions. This study presents a novel two-step spraying methodology for developing spherical silica/nano-boron nitride (BN)-based composite multifunctional superhydrophobic coatings, addressing the critical failure mechanisms associated with thermal and moisture-induced breakdowns in electronic assemblies. Experimental protocol involved preparing two composite suspensions by incorporating micron-scale spherical SiO 2 particles and BN nanoparticles into separate beakers containing ethyl acetate, polyurethane, and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perfluorooctanetriethoxysilane (POTS) as the hydrophobic modifier. These formulations were subsequently applied via spray deposition to create a hierarchical superhydrophobic coating on graphene-modified composite membranes. Optimization of mass ratio parameters revealed that a 3:1 of SiO 2 : BN composition yielded optimal surface characteristics, exhibiting a static water contact angle (WCA) of 161.7°, indicative of exceptional superhydrophobic properties. The results demonstrate homogeneous material mixing with stabilized structure and significantly reduced surface energy. The composite superhydrophobic coating markedly enhanced the thermal conductivity of graphene composite membranes while forming a uniform microstructure. Performance tests revealed exceptional self-cleaning and anti-fouling properties without contaminant residues, with high hydrophobicity maintained even after exposure to harsh environments. This study provides a practical solution for aviation electronics protection, simultaneously achieving superhydrophobicity, enhanced thermal dissipation, and extended service life under extreme conditions, demonstrating significant potential for next-generation aerospace electronic encapsulation.

Fabrication of nano-Ag/SiO2- composite water-based coating for enhanced preservative properties on hygrothermally pre-treated bamboo strips

Qi Feicui,Huang Quanfei,Huang Yanhui,Sun Xiaoting,Liu Zhi,Zhang Zongling,Liu Liyan,Yan Xueying,Tian Jun,Huang Luyi

Bamboo is a naturally-optimized composite material, but it is prone to deformation, cracking, mildew, and decay. The application of coatings with both mildew and decay resistance can provide long-term protection for bamboo, but bamboo lacks transverse cells and contains few fiber cell cavities and pits, leading to poor coating adhesion. This study subjected Phyllostachys edulis ( P. edulis ) and Neosinocalamus affinis ( N. affinis ) substrates to hygrothermal pretreatment to enhance the adhesion of coatings applied to them. A novel nano-Ag/SiO 2 -modified water-based coating with excellent dispersibility and thermal stability was applied to the surface of the pretreated bamboo strip substrates. The adhesion of the coating reached the highest level (Grade 0, no coating detachment), and its initial and maximum peel forces increased by 53.8% and 41.1% after hygrothermal pretreatment, respectively. Upon increasing the nano-Ag/SiO₂ content, the thickness, adhesion, hardness, scratch resistance, resistance to heating-cooling cycles, and mildew/decay resistance of the water-based coating improved. After the mildew resistance tests, the infection level of the samples decreased from Grade 3 (1/2–3/4 of the surface) to Grade 0 (No visible hyphae), while the discoloration level decreased from Grade 4 (severe surface and internal discoloration) to Grade 1 (minor surface discoloration) after soil burial tests. The weight loss rate, gloss reduction, and color difference of the surface also decreased after both tests. The results showed that the water-based coating modified with 2 wt% nano-Ag/SiO 2 exhibited the best dispersion uniformity, abrasion resistance, and minimal color difference, providing the best decorative and protective performance for the bamboo. The coating extended the service life of bamboo and enhanced its applicability in high-humidity indoor environments and harsh outdoor conditions.

Bimetallic urchin-like Au@Pt/SiO2 hybrid interface realizing a reversed positive signal strategy for electrochemical immunosensing of tetracycline

Liu Yeru,Zhang Mengxue,Zhou Yifan,Zhao Xiaolei,Li Xiangli,Liu Hongwei,Cai Qiyong,Liu Song

A reversed positive-signal electrochemical immunosensor was developed for ultra-sensitive tetracyclines (TC) detection, leveraging a synergistically engineered interface of conductive urchin-like Au@Pt nanoparticles (NPs) and insulating SiO 2 nanoprobes. The Au@Pt NPs provide a high-performance electroactive foundation that significantly expands the effective surface area and accelerates interfacial electron transfer kinetics. A ‘signal-on’ mechanism was innovatively constructed by utilizing the mass-transport resistance and steric hindrance of bulky, insulating SiO 2 -antibody conjugates. In the absence of TC, the anchoring of SiO 2 nanoprobes creates a dense insulating barrier that truncates electron tunneling paths. Conversely, the competitive recognition of free TC prevents probe anchoring, removing the barrier and restoring charge transfer, which results in a significantly enhanced signal. This strategy effectively transforms passive dielectric blocking into a sensitive electrochemical response, allowing effective signal amplification of subtle recognition events. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited a linear differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) response from 20 fg/mL to 20 ng/mL, with detection limits of 4.55 fg/mL and 11.58 fg/mL for the glassy carbon electrode and the screen-printed electrode, respectively. The sensor demonstrated excellent specificity against structural analogs, high reproducibility, and reliable recovery in spiked milk samples. This work validates the efficacy of using cost-effective insulating nanomaterials for high-sensitivity biosensing, offering a robust tool for food safety surveillance. Section Graphical

Yuchao Yang,Jianbing Wu,Changxiao Li,Rui Li,Lei Yang,Haoxin Jing,Yupeng Zhang,Baojun Wang,Yao Xu,Lixia Ling

StepWise in-situ hybridization constructs WPUA/SiO 2 interpenetrating network with >90% transmittance. • DFT/RDG/IRI first reveals preferential reaction pathway between KH-550 and TEOS at electronic level. • Systematic comparison of amino, epoxy, and mercapto silanes establishes structure–property mapping. • A systematic comparison of amino, epoxy, and mercapto silanes reveals their coating performance and application advantages. • Under the condition of KH-550: TEOS = 1 : 2, the coating exhibits optimal comprehensive performance. To meet the integrated requirements of automotive displays for zero VOC, anti-glare properties, wide viewing angles, and high abrasion resistance, while overcoming the limitations of mechanical strength and haze in traditional WPUA coatings, this study employs a stepwise in-situ hybridization strategy. Given the significant variations in performance demands across diverse application fields such as architecture, energy, transportation, and healthcare, the research further explores precise methods for performance regulation. By constructing an interpenetrating network using KH-550 and TEOS, a WPUA/SiO 2 hybrid coating was developed. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and reduced density gradient (RDG)/interaction region indicator (IRI) analysis, the synergistic mechanism and reaction pathway between KH-550 and TEOS were elucidated at the electronic level. Experimental results demonstrate that at a KH-550: TEOS molar ratio of 1 : 2, the coating exhibits optimal overall performance, including grade 0 adhesion, 84 HD hardness, 7.3 mg wear loss, and over 90% transmittance. Additionally, with the molar ratio of KH-550 to TEOS fixed at 1 : 2, a systematic comparison of different silane coupling agents revealed distinct advantages: the KH-550 system delivers outstanding adhesion (grade 0) and high transmittance (>90%), with a gloss level of 105 GU; the KH-560 system excels in hardness (86 HD) and resistance (6.9 mg mass loss) with a gloss of 86 GU; and the KH-590 system offers a balanced performance in transmittance (>90%) and water resistance (water absorption 1.2%, water contact angle 98.4°), together with a gloss of 98 GU. This study provides a theoretical foundation and material design guidelines for developing functional coatings tailored to various application scenarios. Towards One-Pot Synthesis of Trimodal HDPE/UHMWPE In-Reactor Blends by CrOx/VOx/CpCr/SiO2 Tri-Metallic Catalysts

Shiyang Wang,Lijia Ding,Ruotong Chen,Yang Yang,Jianhao Guo,Xiaofeng Xue,Ning Zhao,Yibin Zhan,Tiedong Xie,Boping Liu,Yulong Jin

Trimetallic catalysis provides a potential route for the one-pot production of multimodal PE with balanced mechanical and processing properties. Herein, a series of CrO x /VO x /CpCr/SiO 2 trimetallic catalysts are constructed by grafting CrCp 2 onto a CrO x /VO x /SiO 2 with tunable CrCp 2 loadings and benchmarked against mono- and bimetallic catalysts. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed successful CrCp 2 immobilization, and the catalyst containing 0.25 wt% CrCp 2 exhibited the highest productivity. Owing to the distinct H 2 sensitivities of the three active sites, both molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD) can be efficiently regulated through CrCp 2 loading and H 2 partial pressure, enabling the synthesis of tri- or broad-modal PE in a single reactor. Compared with unimodal PE of comparable MW, the trimodal PE exhibited lower melt viscosity and an improved stiffness-toughness balance.
