Cu(II)-enhanced activation of molecular oxygen using Fe(II): Factors affecting the yield of oxidants

Yufan Chen,Yong Feng,Huaqiang Chu,Deli Wu,Yalei Zhang

Cu(II) enhanced the oxygen activation by Fe(II) to increase the yield of oxidants. However the factors controlling the catalytic performance and indeed the underlying influencing mechanisms remained unclear. Here, we presented the detailed study of Cu(II)-Fe(II) reactions for a range of pH and Cu(II)/Fe(II) ratios. From the results obtained, we provided insight into the factors controlling the redox reactions of Fe-Cu and the catalytic behaviours of active species. A reaction scheme for the Fe(II)/Cu(II) system was developed in which the in-situ formed Cu(I) mainly contributed to producing H 2 O 2 and Fe(II) dominantly decomposed H 2 O 2 to hydroxyl radical (HO ) [see companion article] (Yufan Chen). Circumneutral conditions facilitated the catalytic processes; under acidic conditions, the reverse reaction between Fe(III) and Cu(I) was strongly favoured; alkaline conditions improved the reducing capacity, which subsequently enhanced the generation of Cu(0) instead of Cu(I). There was a saturated Cu(II)/Fe(II) ratio above which further addition of Cu(II) could not be reduced, and then excessive Cu(I) and Cu(II) consumed HO and O 2 – , respectively. Therefore, the highest removal efficiency of organic pollutants was achieved when the stoichiometric Cu(II)/Fe(II) ratio was 60% at circumneutral pH. The new findings have implications for the treatment of mixed wastewater where copper and organic pollutants coexist.

Optimization of polyacrylonitrile–cysteine resin synthesis and its selective removal of Cu(II) in aqueous solutions

Yang Chang,Chen Shen,Pin-Yi Li,Lei Fang,Zai-Zai Tong,Min Min,Chun-Hua Xiong

Polyacrylonitrile beads (PAN) cysteine (CS) was synthesized from polyacrylonitrile beads (PAN) and cysteine (CS). The content of the functional group and the percentage conversion of the functional group of PAN-CS prepared under the optimum condition using response surface methodology (RSM) for the first attempt were 3.22   mmol/g and 35.78%. The structure was characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis . The adsorption properties of the resin for Cu(II) were investigated by batch and column experiments. Batch adsorption results suggested that PAN-CS had higher adsorption capability for Cu(II) than other metal ions and maximum saturated adsorption capacity was 184.7   mg/g. The resin and its metal complexes were studied by FT-IR. Furthermore, the resin can be eluted easily using 1   mol/L HCl. PAN-CS can provide a potential application for selective removal of copper from waste solution.

Enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation for phenol degradation over MnO2 at pH 3.5–9.0 via Cu(II) substitution

Yulin Huang,Xike Tian,Yulun Nie,Chao Yang,Yanxin Wang

Cu(II) doped mesoporous MnO 2 (Cu-MnO 2 ) was prepared to establish an intimate functional link between the structure substitution and catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Based on the characterization of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption-desorption measurement, scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), Cu-MnO 2 had a typical long range ordered mesoporous structure and Cu was successfully introduced in octahedral framework. It exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability for the phenol degradation by PMS. Phenol was always efficiently degraded over Cu-MnO 2 at a pH range of 3.5–9.0. For example, the reaction rate constant at pH 7.0 was 0.073 min −1 , which was two times higher than that of MnO 2 (0.039 min −1 ). Importantly, 1 O 2 was identified as the primary reactive species in Cu-MnO 2 /PMS system. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that more exposed surface oxygen defects due to Cu doping were responsible to the enhancement of PMS activation for phenol degradation. The results of PMS decomposition and oxygen evolution indicated that surface oxygen defects lower the reaction energy barrier of PMS decomposition by generating 1 O 2 via the energy trapping by oxygen. Finally, the heterogeneous PMS activation mechanism over Cu-MnO 2 was proposed.

Polydopamine-functionalized electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan nanofibers for the removal and determination of Cu(II)

Chuang Li,Li Fu,Suqi Deng,Heng Wang,Li Jia

Environmentally friendly and recycled polydopamine-functionalized electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan nanofibers (PVA/CS/PDA) were prepared through a low-energy-consumption procedure. The PDA coating endows PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers with good water stability. The PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers have a fibrillar and porous structure that is favorable for Cu(II) to access the active sites of the nanofibers. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics data preferably conform to the Liu isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions by PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers from the Liu isotherm model is 326.5 mg g −1 . The PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers exhibit higher adsorption capacity than some other reported adsorbents. The adsorption mechanism study demonstrates that the Cu(II) adsorption is mainly ascribed to the complexation of Cu(II) with the imino, amino, and hydroxy moieties in PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers. The nanofibers can be employed for 5 cycles without significantly deteriorating performance. More interestingly, a fluorometry method based on the oxidation mimic enzyme activity of Cu(II) was developed to detect low concentrations of Cu(II) using the nanofibers as an adsorbent to preconcentrate Cu(II). The limit of detection is 0.42 mg L −1 . The successful removal and detection of Cu(II) in Pearl River and mineral water samples demonstrates the great potential of PVA/CS/PDA nanofibers to remediate Cu(II)-polluted water.

A novel and green cellulose-based Schiff base-Cu (II) complex and its excellent antibacterial activity

Yongjian Xu,Yun Shi,Feng Lei,Lei Dai

Cellulose-based materials are widely used in the biomedical field. However, the lack of antibacterial activities of cellulose fibers inevitably causes bacterial infection damages. In this study, Schiff base was first introduced to endow the cellulose fibers good antibacterial property and copper ions were complexed with Schiff base to form a complex. The prepared complex greatly enhanced the antibacterial properties of the cellulose fibers. FT-IR, XRD, UV–vis and SEM-EDS results proved the successful synthesis of Schiff base and its copper (II) complex. The antibacterial tests indicated that the width of the inhibition zone of the as-prepared cellulose-based Schiff base-Cu (II) complex against E. coli and S. aureus increased by 472 % and 823 %, respectively, in comparison to the Schiff base ligand. This significant increase could be attributed to the incorporation of the copper ions (II). This Schiff base-Cu (II) complex containing cellulose-based antibacterial materials are expected to be widely used for biomedical application.

Decomplexation of Cu(II)-natural organic matter complex by non-thermal plasma oxidation: Process and mechanisms

Tiecheng Wang,Liling Zhou,Yang Cao,Ying Zhang,Guangzhou Qu,Xuetao Guo,Hanzhong Jia,Lingyan Zhu

Heavy metals and natural organic matters (NOM) form very stable heavy metal-NOM complexes in aqueous, facilitating the migration of heavy metals and enhancing their potential risks. In this study, non-thermal plasma oxidation was attempted to destroy the heavy metal-NOM complexes, with Cu-humate (Cu-HA) as a model. The decomplexation efficiency reached 86.1 % within 50 min of plasma oxidation at 16 kV. The generated reactive species by the non-thermal plasma, including O 2 − , 1 O 2 , OH, attacked the carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups of HA, leading to cleavage of the Cu-O bonds, decomplexation of Cu-HA, and release of free Cu(II). Meanwhile, a variety of small molecular intermediates, including phenols, benzoic acids, esters, amines, ketones, acetic acid, formic acid, and oxalic acid, were generated due to attack by the oxidative species on the aromatic moiety and double bonds in Cu-HA. As a consequence of decomplexation, the residual toxicity of Cu-HA to Scenedesmus obliquus was distinctly reduced. This study provides a potential technique to decomplex heavy metal-NOM complexes, and reduces their toxicity to typical Scenedesmus obliquus.

Facile crosslinking of polythiophenes by polyethylenimine via ester aminolysis for selective Cu(II) detection in water

Xuewei Wang,Chi Zhang,Yajie Zhang,Jian Sun,Leilei Cao,Jinkai Ji,Fude Feng

Functionalization of π-conjugated polymers is dispensable for solubilization of the rigid and hydrophobic backbones in water. However, polymer aggregation is always present and leads to issues with complication and reproducibility in spectral properties. Herein, we reported a simple and robust method to make a series of conjugated polymer nanostructures by a crosslinking strategy. In favor of multivalency effect, polythionenes with various chain lengths were functionalized with branched polyethylenimine (PEI) via ester aminolysis reaction under mild conditions. Photophysical studies revealed the conjugated backbones could be well stabilized and dispersed in water. By taking advantage of intermolecular recognition interaction between copper ions and cationic PEI, we applied crosslinked polythiophenes as a nano probe at very low concentration (0.01 mg/mL) to fluorescently detect copper ions with high sensitivity up to 10 nM and selectivity over other metal ions in aqueous solutions, without occurrence of detectable aggregates. The overall performance of our nano probes outperforms reported water-soluble polymers-based probes, particularly in probe availability and manipulation as well as selective copper detection capability.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for the treatment of concentrated Cu(II) wastewater: a field demonstration

Shaolin Li,Wei Wang,Weile Yan,Wei-xian Zhang

A field demonstration was conducted to assess the feasibility of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) for the treatment of wastewater containing high levels of Cu(II). Pilot tests were performed at a printed-circuit-board manufacturing plant, treating 250 000 L of wastewater containing 70 mg L−1 Cu(II) with a total of 55 kg of nZVI. A completely mixed reactor of 1,600 L was operated continuously with flow rates ranging from 1000 to 2500 L h−1. The average Cu(II) removal efficiency was greater than 96% with 0.20 g L−1 nZVI and a hydraulic retention time of 100 min. The nZVI reactor achieved a remarkably high volumetric loading rate of 1876 g Cu per m3 per day for Cu(II) removal, surpassing the loading rates of conventional technologies by more than one order of magnitude. The average removal capacity of nZVI for Cu(II) was 0.343 g Cu per gram of Fe. The Cu(II) removal efficiency can be reliably regulated by the solution Eh, which in turn is a function of nZVI input and hydraulic retention time. The ease of separation and recycling of nZVI contribute to process up-scalability and cost effectiveness. Cu(II) was reduced to metallic copper and cuprite (Cu2O). The end product is a valuable composite of iron and copper (∼20–25%), which can partially offset the treatment costs.

PEI-modified chitosan/activated carbon composites for Cu(II) removal from simulated pyrophosphate plating rinsing wastewater

Qingdi Kong,Xiaojie Zhang,Kangrui Ma,Yuefa Gong,Hong Peng,Wei Qi

It is a challenging task to remove heavy metal ions efficiently from the wastewater containing high concentrations of complexants. In this work, a novel PEI-modified chitosan/activated carbon composite adsorbent (PCA) was prepared and applied to the removal of Cu(II) from pyrophosphate plating rinsing wastewater. The main species of Cu(II) in the pyrophosphate wastewater was [Cu(HP 2 O 7 ) 2 ] 4− or [Cu(P 2 O 7 ) 2 ] 6− , which were denoted as [Cu(II)-PP] anions. The maximum adsorption capacity of PCA for Cu(II) reached 1.41 mmol g −1 under the condition of pH = 8 and molar ratio of pyrophosphate to Cu(II) = 4:1. The adsorption kinetic behavior of Cu(II) on PCA followed the Elovich model best and PCA attained adsorption equilibrium within 36 h. The thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption process of Cu(II) by PCA was endothermic and spontaneous. The PCA fixed bed column was used to remove Cu(II) from simulated pyrophosphate plating rinsing wastewater. After three consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption performance, hydraulic conductivity , and mechanical stability of PCA column did not decrease. The FTIR and XPS analysis results indicated that [Cu(II)-PP] anions can be adsorbed on PCA by electrostatic attraction with protonated amine groups or coordination with the amine groups of PCA via ligand substitution.

Engineering of An Aptamer-Functionalized Fluorescent DNA Sensor for Cu(II) Responding in Living Tumor Cells

Yue Mou,Peng Yin,Meiyun Chen,Chonghui Wei,Yanfei Zhang,Jiaheng Zhang,Yujie Zhao,Xingyu Luo,Yilin Wang

Copper ions play vital roles in regulating life processes and being closely involved in several diseases such as cancer. Although detection methods based on fluorescent sensors or other strategies have been developed, it still remains a challenge to simultaneously realize the convenience, specificity, and accuracy in intracellular copper ion analysis. Herein, we propose an aptamer-functionalized DNA fluorescent sensor (AFDS) for accurate and specific detection of Cu(II) both in vitro and in cells by engineering the linkage of two DNA aptamers, namely, Lettuce aptamer and AS1411 aptamer, to achieve the manner of recognition response. Taking advantage of the functions of each aptamer, the tumor cell recognition capability and the high-contrast detection performance are simultaneously equipped in the AFDS. Furthermore, the AFDS shows high specificity and selectivity in Cu(II) response to avoid interference from common metal ions, chelators, and reactants by being associated with the irreversible interaction between nucleobases and Cu(II), which can destroy the topological structures and switch off the fluorescence of the AFDS. It also enables a sensitive in vitro detection of Cu(II) with a detection limit as lower as 0.1 μM and a wide detection linear range from 0.1 to 300 μM. The feasibility and superiority of the AFDS provide an opportunity to reveal both concentration-dependent and time-dependent intracellular Cu(II) responses in living cells. Therefore, the AFDS has achieved the novel detection performance of Cu(II) to exhibit great potential in exploring copper-related biological and pathological research.

Cu(I)/Cu(II) Released by Cu Nanoparticles Revealed Differential Cellular Toxicity Related to Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Xiangrui Wang,Wen-Xiong Wang

Cu-based nanoparticles (NPs) have been increasingly fabricated, and different Cu species (i.e., Cu+ and Cu2+) of these NPs are tuned to achieve differential physicochemical properties. Although ion release is one of the major toxic mechanisms of Cu-based NPs, differences in cytotoxicity between released Cu(I) and Cu(II) ions are largely unknown. In this study, the A549 cells exhibited a lower tolerance to Cu(I) compared with Cu(II) accumulation. Bioimaging of labile Cu(I) indicated that the change of the Cu(I) level upon CuO and Cu2O exposure displayed different trends. We then developed a novel method to selectively release Cu(I) and Cu(II) ions within the cells by designing CuxS shells for Cu2O and CuO NPs, respectively. This method confirmed that Cu(I) and Cu(II) exhibited different cytotoxicity mechanisms. Specifically, excess Cu(I) induced cell death through mitochondrial fragmentation, which further led to apoptosis, whereas Cu(II) resulted in cell cycle arrest at the S phase and induced reactive oxygen species generation. Cu(II) also led to mitochondrial fusion, which was likely due to the influence of the cell cycle. Our study first uncovered the difference between the cytotoxicity mechanisms of Cu(I) and Cu(II), which could be greatly beneficial for the green fabrication of engineered Cu-based NPs.
