Tissue engineering of tracheal with decellularized tracheal matrix has been proposed as a therapeutic alternative to tracheal replacement. At present, the method to acquire decellularized tracheal matrix was not efficient enough, which should be improved. The aim of our study is to
explore a novel method to acquire decellularized tracheal matrix efficiently. Here, the tracheas were taken from New Zealand white rabbits and randomly divided into three groups: Control group (C group), stored in sterile D-Hanks solution; Traditional method group (T group), digested by the
detergentenzymatic method; Novel method group (N group), digested by the Trypsin-EDTA comprised with Detergent-enzymatic method. After the same time of decellularization, the efficacy of decellularization, the histoarchitecture and mechanical properties of decellularized tracheal matrix were
detected in each group. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from neonatal rabbit were seeded in the decellularized tracheal matrix, and SEM was used to detect the growth of MSCs. After the same time of decellularization, most of the cellular components and nuclear material were removed
in N group, compared with C group and T group. SEM and TEM analysis revealed that both N group and T group could retain the hierarchical structure of the native trachea. Manual compression suggested the trachea of T group was much weaker than N group. Tensile test result showed that tensile
breaking load, tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity of T group and N group were similar to C group. In addition, 1 days and 3 days after seeded, much more MSCs could adherent in N group than T group. This study suggested that the novel method can generate a decellularized
tracheal matrix superior to the traditional method.

As a tripeptide molecule widely present in living organisms, glutathione (GSH) exhibits remarkable antioxidant and detoxification effects, and is involved in important physiological processes such as amino acid transport and cellular metabolism. Electrochemical detection can accurately and sensitively determine the GSH content in biological samples, which provides an important basis for early diagnosis, disease assessment and termination monitoring. In this study, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) was grafted onto the framework of MOF-808 through the strategy of post-synthetic modification, which effectively increased the number of metal affinity active sites on the material. Furthermore, silver ions were abundantly and firmly chelated on MOF-808-EDTA through coordination, and an electrochemical sensing platform (MOF-808-EDTA-Ag/GCE) was successfully constructed for detecting GSH. Due to the solid-state signal amplification effect of AgCl, the current signal (I Ag ) can be significantly improved, while GSH preferred to competitive binding with Ag on the electrode surface, resulting in the extrusion effect caused by competitive coordination, thus the current signal decreased. The sensor realized the quantification of GSH through the decline level of current response, showing a satisfactory linear range (0.02 nM∼20 μM) and a low detection limit (0.013 nM). At the same time, the sensing platform has also been successfully used to measure the GSH content in human serum and urine, the recovery results (95.9 % ∼ 108.8 %) and relative standard deviation (RSD < 4.05 %) were all within the acceptable range, which exhibited an excellent practical application value.

Chlorophenol is a widely used organic compound, and the environmental and health problems caused by it have being worsened in recent years. This study used 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) as the target pollutant, and employed ultrasound (US) enhanced zero-valent iron (Fe 0 )/EDTA/air system (FEA), namely US/FEA, to remove 2,4,6-TCP. The influence of single factor experimental conditions such as EDTA concentration, Fe 0 dosage, US power, pH and pollutant concentration on the removal efficiency of 2,4,6-TCP was investigated, and the optimal reaction conditions were determined. The mechanism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by US/FEA was explored. The degradation process and removal mechanism of 2,4,6-TCP in the US/FEA were discussed through the determination and analysis of intermediate products. The results showed that US could continuously activate and renew the Fe 0 surface, accelerate its oxidation and corrosion process, and then continuously and stably produce sufficient amounts of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ . Ultrasonic cavitation effect could reduce the difficulty of O 2 activation reaction, and promote the production of sufficient H 2 O 2 . The addition of EDTA made the system have a wide range of pH applications, and its performance under neutral and alkaline conditions was also superior. The ROS of US/FEA included ·OH, O 2 ·- and Fe(IV), where Fe(IV) was the main contributor to the removal of 2,4,6-TCP. In addition, the degradation of 2,4,6-TCP had two processes including dechlorination and benzene ring opening. First, 2,4,6-TCP was dechlorinated and degraded into phenol. And then, phenol was degraded into small molecular acids by ring-opening, and finally it was mineralized into CO 2 and H 2 O completely. US/FEA is a promising technology for high-efficiency degradation of organic matter and deep environmental purification.

Industrial wastewater often contains potentially toxic metals and it’s chelates, posing serious threats to human health and aquatic ecosystems, and adsorption is frequently used for the minimization of potentially toxic metals from water. In this study, citric acid modified MOF-808 (MOF-808-CA) was prepared by using citric acid to modify MOF-808 for the removal of Cr(III) and Cr(III)-EDTA from wastewater. MOF-808-CA with the BET surface area of 653.59 m2 g−1 and the pore volumes of 0.467 cm3 g−1 was successfully synthesized. The adsorption of Cr(III) and Cr(III)-EDTA by MOF-808-CA was 40.46 and 17.03 mg g−1 at pH 4.0 and 25°C, respectively. The adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics of Cr(III) and Cr(III)-EDTA were summarized using Langmuir-Freundlich isothermal adsorption model and the pseudo-second-order model. Even in high salinity wastewater (35,000 mg L−1), MOF-808-CA displayed a strong affinity for Cr(III) and Cr(III)-EDTA. The site energy (E*) values reduced with the increasing of adsorption capacities, and Cr(III) and Cr(III)-EDTA firstly dominated the high-energy adsorption sites before low-energy adsorption sites. The average site energies for the adsorption of Cr(III) and Cr(III)-EDTA by MOF-808-CA were 26.7 and 24 kJ mol−1, respectively, and the differences in the average site energies further illustrated the essential differences in their adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption by electrostatic adsorption and surface complexation were the main adsorption mechanisms for Cr(III) on MOF-808-CA, whereas hydrogen bonding and complexation were the main adsorption mechanisms for Cr(III)-EDTA on MOF-808-CA. The results showed that the MOF-808-CA adsorbent has a great potential for the removal of both Cr(III) and Cr(III)-EDTA from aqueous solutions.

BACKGROUND Soil in uranium mining areas is contaminated by uranium and associated heavy metals, posing a significant threat to human health and ecological security. Chelating agent assisted phytoremediation is a cost-effective and ecologically friendly remediation approach for uranium and associated heavy metals contaminated soil. In this work, a novel slow-release composite chelating agent (SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC) was fabricated using carboxymethyl chitosan-graft-carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CMC-g-CMCD) as a slow-release carrier and EDTA/ammonium citrate (AC) as a composite chelating agent through the spray drying method, which was used for phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with uranium and chromium. RESULTS CMC-g-CMCD exhibited superior slow-release performance for both EDTA and AC in comparison with CMC and CMCD. When applied to soil contaminated with uranium (U) and chromium (Cr), SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC effectively regulated the release of U and Cr. Sunflowers ( Helianthus annuus L.) grown in treated soil showed a significant increase in U and Cr uptake by 70.55% and 35.55%, respectively, and reduced leaching losses by 34.88% and 37.42%. CONCLUSION SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC not only assists in the phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with U and Cr but also reduces the risk of leaching into groundwater during the soil phytoremediation process. SR CMC-g-CMCD -EDTA/AC-assisted phytoremediation technology was an effective and environmentally friendly remediation means for the removal of U and heavy metals from contaminated soils in uranium mining areas. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

There are two popular methods to measure reactive phosphorus (P) and total P: the GB11893-89 method in China and the 4500-P E method of the APHA in the US. However, their drawbacks, including long reaction time and narrow linear range, cannot satisfy the demand for modern analytic techniques. Here, based on reducing the acidity of the molybdenum blue (MB) reaction, and then stabilizing with EDTA, we have developed a novel method (WH-flags) to quickly measure both reactive P and total P. In the WH-flags method, “W” stands for Wide linear ranges (0–1.4 mg L−1 for reactive P & 0–1.8 mg L−1 for total P), “H” stands for High tolerance of different matrices (it can be adapted to a wide spectrum of samples), “f” is fast reaction time (2 min), “l” is long stabilization (40 min), “a” stands for appropriate recovery rates (89.1–103.2%), “g” is good precision and accuracy (CVs < 5% & Res < 5%) and “s” is small volume of samples (5–10 mL). The WH-flags method showed good linearity (R2 > 0.999). The WH-flags method should have broad application in monitoring P from different aqueous samples in the future.

Photocatalysis technology is a promising green route to eliminate antibiotic residues, but current performance still cannot satisfy the practicality. Herein, an EDTA-2Na mediated supramolecular self-assembly strategy was employed to modulate the morphology and microstructure of graphitic carbon nitride (GCN). The obtained EDTA-2Na mediated supermolecule-based GCN (ESGCN) was proved to possess ultrathin flake-like morphology with developed porous structure and Na/O dopants to enhance visible light harvesting. Compared to the pristine GCN and the supermolecule-based GCN (SGCN) without the EDTA-2Na mediation, the ESGCN has more photogenerated charges, decreased charge recombination and accelerated transport/transfer rate, which thus greatly improved photocatalytic activity for degrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and the apparent rate constant is 37.3 and 6.0 times higher than those of the GCN and the SGCN. Additionally, it exhibits excellent universality in degrading various tetracycline antibiotics with a wide pH range and good stability/durability. A possible mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of TC by the ESGCN was elaborated. And the toxicity assessments and mung bean germination experiments also indicate the photocatalytic process can effectively decrease the toxicity and the potential risk of TC to the environment. This work provides a feasible and effective approach to enhance photocatalytic activity of graphitic carbon nitride, which has prominent potentials for elimination of antibiotic residues in environment.

Heavy metal pollution in water environments has emerged as a critical global concern, posing severe threats to ecological security and human health. Although laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) provides an effective means for elemental detection, matrix interferences caused by liquid vaporization, splashing, and surface oscillation have hindered its application in liquid-phase analysis. To address the challenges, this study developed a novel method for rapid cadmium detection using EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)-modified glass fiber membrane-assisted LIBS. Through systematic evaluation of signal enhancement effect and quantitative detection performance, the glass fiber membrane demonstrated optimal suitability as a cadmium adsorption substrate for LIBS, attributable to its notable adsorption-excitation synergistic effect ( R² > 0.9211). EDTA was used to modify the fiber membranes, and calibration curves for LIBS-EDTA-fiber membrane method were established. The results indicated that EDTA modification contributed to enhanced cadmium detection capability, with the EDTA-glass fiber membrane exhibiting excellent performance at Cd II 226.50 nm line ( R² = 0.9443, LOD = 1.28 mg/L), which fully verifies the promise of EDTA-modified membranes as effective adsorption substrates. Additionally, the key parameters of adsorption pretreatment were optimized, with recommended combination determined as follows: pH 5.0–7.0, adsorption time 10–15 min, and drying time 30–40 min, which collectively balance the intensity and stability of spectral signals. LIBS-EDTA-glass fiber membrane method effectively mitigates the matrix interference of LIBS detection through an integrated strategy of efficient Cd²⁺ enrichment and aqueous phase separation. With advantages of rapidity, accuracy, and cost-effective, it provides reliable technical support for on-site monitoring of cadmium pollution in water.

EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs were used as the specific recognition element and signal probe of a fluorescence sensor or paper chip for the highly sensitive detection of Cd(II) with an electronic eye device as readout. The results showed that the CdTe@CdS QDs were successfully synthesized with a typical core–shell structure. Under the optimum conditions, the EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs sensor achieved the sensitive detection of Cd(II) with a detection limit of 0.092 μM and a concentration range of 0.44–6.67 μM. The paper chips based on the EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs sensor had a visual cut-off value of 0.44 μM with a short detection time (<15 min). The proposed method also exhibited excellent stability, high specificity, and good recovery for Cd(II) in real rice samples. These results suggested that the EDTA-etched CdTe@CdS QDs provide a promising platform for on-site and visual detection of Cd(II) in rice samples.

In this study, a modified Fenton system using calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) powder, as an effective source of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in aqueous solution was investigated. Our results indicated that degradation of SMX in Fe(II)-EDTA catalyzed CaO 2 system was readily more efficient than in Fe(II) catalyzed CaO 2 system. The SMX degradation efficiency was found maximum at pH 6.0 and SMX degradation was suppressed as the initial solution pH was increased. Nevertheless overall removal efficiency in this system was favorable near to neutral pH. In addition, it was observed that the higher bicarbonates (HCO 3 − ) contents had a considerable scavenging ability to SMX degradation while low concentration exhibited auspicious role. The presence of chlorides (Cl − ), nitrates (NO 3 − ), sulfates (SO 4 2− ), and humic acid (HA) could improve SMX removal in this Fenton-like system. Furthermore, chemical probe and radical scavenging activity confirmed the formation of hydroxyl (HO ) and superoxide (O 2 − ) radicals, and also described that the SMX degradation was predominantly due to the HO -induced oxidative destruction. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies for different systems, different pH values and different reaction times were carried out to determine the HO radical intensities. EPR results showed that HO intensities were higher in Fe(II)-EDTA catalyzed CaO 2 system, at pH 6.0 and at 90 s reaction time, respectively. Intermediate products of SMX were identified and possible mechanism of SMX degradation was suggested. In conclusion, this work provided comprehensive knowledge for the use of Fe(II)-EDTA catalyzed CaO 2 system for remediation of SMX contaminated sites.

Phytoremediation of contaminated soil is an in-situ reclamation technique for removal of potentially toxic metals through hyperaccumulator plants. Potherb mustard ( Brassica juncea, Coss. ) is less explored for its assisted phytoextraction potential to restore and accelerate potentially toxic metals removal from smelter-contaminated soil. In this study, different levels of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) alone and combined with citric acid (CA) and oxalic acid (OA) were applied in a greenhouse pot experiment. Chelates added on 25th d and 25/35th d after sowing, enhanced cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) bioavailability in soil due to complexation. As a result, Cd and Zn in shoot and root were significantly amplified by 1.7, 2.15 and 1.93, 2.7 folds than control, respectively. Shoot and root dry weight significantly reduced and ranged between 4.13–9.91 and 0.21–0.77 g pot −1 , respectively. The toxicity induced by potentially toxic metals in plant imposed a series of biological responses. Plant antioxidants like Phenylalanine ammomialyase (PAL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) Catalase (CAT) content increased, except the peroxidase (POD) with the addition of chelating agents . Besides, biological concentration factor (BCF) of Cd and Zn, translocation factor (TF) of Cd were notably elevated (>1.0), while TF of Zn was reduced. Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive relation between DTPA-extractable and shoot concentration of Cd and Zn, whereas it showed negative correlation with plant dry weight. In general, chelate-assisted phytoremediation of smelter contaminated soil proved effective in this study, and followed the order: EDTA > EDTA + CA ≈ EDTA + OA > CK.

The metal-organic frameworks/cotton fabric composites (MOFs/CFCs) have emerged as a new type of prospective materials for environmental cleanup , due to their convenient recyclability and high removal efficiency towards hazardous pollutants . However, their practical applications are limited by complicated synthetic conditions, insufficient interface bonding and poor adsorption capacity. Herein, for the first time, a robust ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-functionalized MOFs/CFC is prepared based on UiO-66-NH 2 crystals by using EDTA dianhydride as the cross-linking agent, and applied for simultaneous removal of heavy metals and dyes, as well as degradation of chemical warfare agents. The as-prepared EDTA-UiO-66-NH 2 /CFC shows extraordinary monocomponent adsorption performance with maximum adsorption capacity of 158.7, 126.2, 131.5, 117.4 and 104.5 mg/g for Cd(II), Cu(II), methylene blue , crystal violet and safranin O, respectively. Interestingly, in metal-dyes binary system, the uptake of Cu(II) by EDTA-UiO-66-NH 2 /CFC increases significantly when co-existing high concentration of dyes. The results indicate that the synergistic and simultaneous removal of both dyes and metal from complex systems can be realized by EDTA-UiO-66-NH 2 /CFC via multiple mechanisms. The EDTA-UiO-66-NH 2 /CFC also exhibits an outstanding catalytic performance for degrading dimethyl 4-nitrophenylphosphate. Besides, it can be reused for several times without obvious decrease of its adsorption and catalysis efficiencies. More impressively, the cross-linking reaction approach can not only anchor UiO-66-NH 2 crystals firmly onto cotton fabric, but also facilitate in-situ formation of abundant adsorption sties on the adsorbent surface. Therefore, this work offers a simple and versatile synthetic strategy to develop high-performance environmental material for multiple pollutants remediation.
