High-performance non-enzyme glucose sensor based on 4-Iodopyridine-modified ZIF-67/MWCNT composite with enhanced conductivity and molecular permeability

Yuqing Chai,Xuan Zhou,Gang Yuan,Wei Wang,Jingjing Zhang

ZIF-67-C 5 H 4 IN/MWCNT composites were successfully synthesized by doping 4-Iodopyridine (C 5 H 4 IN) and integrating multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) IN cobalt dimethylimidazole (ZIF-67) via solvothermal and self-assembly methods. The composite was drop-cast on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for non-enzyme glucose detection IN alkaline media. The incorporation of C 5 H 4 IN modulated the three-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) structure of ZIF-67 and improved the molecular permeability, whereas the MWCNTs improved the electrical conductivity. As a result, the sensor offers excellent performance with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.78 μM, a linear range of 0.18–1.98 mM, and a sensitivity of 1033 μA mM −1  cm −2 . In addition, the sensor offers excellent stability, reproducibility and selectivity for common interferences.

Yan Ruixue,Guo Hao,Yang Zeyun,Niu Wenting,Yan Yu,Ma Jianpeng,Wang Mingyue,Yang Wu

A sensitive electrochemical sensor was constructed for tyrosine detection by collaborating a highly conductivity, excellent electrocatalysis and large surface of nitrogen-rich porous covalent organic framework in situ grown on three-dimensional conductive carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes network and catalytic activity of triangular silver nanosheets. The prepared electrochemical sensing platform exhibited satisfactory results for detection of tyrosine with a wide linear range of 0.6–280 μM and a low detection limit of 0.017 μM, which were significantly superior to those of most existing electrochemical methods. At the same time, the developed sensor was successfully applied to the detection of tyrosine in real samples including human serum and urine and displayed high recoveries, good stability, reproducibility, and anti-interference ability. This study not only provides a novel sensing platform for tyrosine monitoring but also offers an innovative design concept for leveraging multifunctional nanocomposites in biosensing applications. Pt@COOH-MWCNT enhanced conductive hydrogel with antibacterial and salt-tolerant properties for sensitive electrochemical detection of bisphenol a in seawater

Faman Lin,Jiaqi Geng,Yanxin Lv,Zhitan Huang,Daniel Scherman,Shuhai He,Hongji Li,Tingting Sun,Wei Sun

Pt@COOH-MWCNT/PVA/AM hydrogel is synthesized by in situ gelation method. • Hydrogel modified electrode is used to sensitive electrochemical analysis of BPA. • Good properties of conductivity, antibacterial and salt-resistant are realized. • The sensor has a wide range of 0.05–1000.00 μM and a low LOD of 0.045 μM. Bisphenol A (BPA), which is extensively employed in plastics and food-contact products, poses serious hazards to the ecological environment and human health because of its endocrine disruptor property. Owing to its wide usage and environmental persistence, sensitive, selective and rapid BPA detection is urgently required, particularly in seawater. In this work, a conductive hydrogel prepared by anchoring Pt nanoparticles (NPs) onto carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNT) was used to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for BPA electrochemical detection. The morphology and structure of the resulting composite were characterized, which revealed a dense, three-dimensional porous conductive network with fast electron transport ability and good mechanical stability. The incorporation of Pt@COOH-MWCNT significantly improved both the electrical conductivity and the electrocatalytic oxidation performance toward BPA. The fabrication and electrochemical detection parameters were optimized. Under optimal conditions (0.1 M phosphate buffer solution, pH 6.0), the sensor exhibits a BPA linear response range of 0.05–1000.00 μM with a detection limit of 0.045 μM, along with superior anti-interference, good stability, reproducibility (RSD = 0.9%), excellent salt tolerance, and antibacterial activity. When applied to real seawater samples, the recoveries were ranged from 97.50% to 106.00% with a relative standard deviation below 3.5%, confirming the sensor's favorable accuracy and reliability. The proposed sensor integrates robust structural integrity, enhanced conductivity, high catalytic activity, cost-effectiveness, and antibacterial performance, which offers a new strategy for on-site rapid monitoring of BPA in seawater environments with great application potential. The detection of bisphenol A (BPA) in seawater remains challenging due to complex matrices and the lack of simple, low-cost sensing platforms, as conventional electrochemical sensors often involve tedious fabrication or suffer from limited performance. Herein, a Pt@COOH-MWCNT/PVA/AM conductive hydrogel is fabricated via a straightforward in situ gelation strategy, providing a facile and cost-effective approach. Exploiting the high conductivity of COOH-MWCNT, the electrocatalytic activity of Pt nanoparticles, and the porosity, antibacterial property, and salt tolerance of the PVA/AM matrix, the constructed sensor achieves sensitive BPA detection over a wide linear range (0.05–1000 μM) with a low detection limit (0.045 μM), along with good reproducibility, anti-interference capability, and stability. Satisfactory recoveries (97.50%–106.00%) obtained in real seawater samples confirm its analytical reliability. This work offers a promising strategy for developing robust, low-cost electrochemical sensors suitable for on-site monitoring of BPA in complex marine environments. Hyaluronic acid-grafted three-dimensional MWCNT array as biosensing interface for chronocoulometric detection and fluorometric imaging of CD44-overexpressing cancer cells

Liu Minghuan,Xu Yanan,Huang Chusen,Jia Ti,Zhang Xiaoyan,Yang Da-Peng,Jia Nengqin

A sandwich-type electrochemical cytosensor is described for quantitative determination of CD44-overexpressing HeLa cells. Hyaluronic acid (HA) acts as a targeting molecule that was in-situ incorporated into the sensor based on the use of an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The 3D-MWCNT structure is shown to strongly improve the electronic properties and surface chemical reactivities. The HA-modified sensor exhibits a highly sensitive response to HeLa cells. A sandwiched hybridization protocol was then established using BIO [an N-butyl-4-(6′-aminohexyl)amino-1,8-naphthalimide probe modified with HA] as the tracing labels of the fluorescent probes for targeting CD44-positive tumor cells. The signal amplification was thereby maximized and measured by chronocoulometry. The binding of CD44-positive HeLa cells to the HA modified sensing layer causes a decrease in chronocoulometric response. The signal decreases linearly in the 2.1 × 10 2 to 2.1 × 10 7 HeLa cells·mL −1 concentration range with a detection limit of 70 cells·mL −1 . Such a sandwich-type assay may be tailored as a sensitive candidate for detecting low levels of tumor cells. Schematic of a sandwich cytosensor based on hyaluronic acid-grafted 3D-MWCNT as biosensing interface and BIO as fluorescent probe. This biosensor possessed excellent electrochemical activity, high sensitivity and selectivity, providing a dynamical tracking and detecting platform for CD44-positive tumor cells.

Efficient electrochemical degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A using MnO2/MWCNT composites modified Ni foam as cathode: Kinetic analysis, mechanism and degradation pathway

Yimei Zhang,Zhuang Chen,Lincheng Zhou,Panpan Wu,Yalong Zhao,Yuxian Lai,Fei Wang,Shuai Li

In this study, MnO 2 /MWCNT hybrids, prepared using a solvothermal method, were coated onto Ni foam and then used as a cathode for tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) degradation. The reaction was confirmed to exhibit the pseudo first-order kinetics. Compared with the original Ni foam cathode, the fabricated electrode exhibited higher catalytic activity, attributed to its strong cross-linking and ability to produce catalytic free radicals. Radical scavenger experiments revealed that O 2 − and OH were involved in the decomposition of TBBPA. The effects of current density, pH, catalyst dosage, and initial TBBPA concentration on removal efficiency were further studied. An optimal removal rate of 98.3% was achieved while the rate constant reached values up to 0.07293 min −1 and the debromination rate was more than 75.4% within 60 min. The electrode showed high catalytic performance and low catalyst loss after 10 cycles, indicating its excellent stability and reusability. The probable mechanism and pathway of TBBPA degradation were suggested based on the analysis of intermediate products. It could be inferred that the decomposition of TBBPA involved C C bond breaks (oxidation) and debromination (reduction). The MnO 2 /MWCNT-Ni foam could be a promising cathode material for electrochemical degradation of halogenated organic compounds.

Synergistic radical and non-radical pathways for enhanced mineralization of organic pollutants by non-metallic h-BN/MWCNT composites via mechanochemical activation

Huanji Song,Jiahao Sun,Lingshan Miao,Zhilong Lin,Shenghu Wang,Dongcheng Li,Weiyang Lv

Non-metallic catalysts have gained great attention in peroxymonosulfate based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) for their enhanced safety and environmental compatibility. However, low catalytic efficiency, incomplete mineralization and harsh preparation methods still hinder their practical application. This work developed an innovative solvent-free ball milling-assisted pyrolysis strategy utilizing hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as synergistic precursors to construct the BN-CNT-700 composite. The mutually doped active sites were facilely formed through carbon/nitrogen hybridization , where electron-withdrawing C O groups dominated 1 O 2 generation while electron-donating C N sites primarily mediated SO 4 •− production. The radical and non-radical pathways worked in synergy to achieve complete removal of 20 mg·L −1 bisphenol A (BPA) coupled with an ultra-high mineralization efficiency of 88.6 %, surpassing most reported non-metallic counterparts and even outperforming various metal-based systems. Moreover, the BN-CNT-700/PMS system demonstrated exceptional environmental robustness, maintaining high BPA removal efficiency across broad pH ranges, various inorganic ions, and complex water matrices. This research offers the important implications for the rational design of non-metallic catalysts with tunable active sites for high-efficiency pollutant decontamination.

Spider web-inspired multifunctional aerogel sensor: MWCNT/MXene/TOCNF synergize to achieve high-sensitivity multiple detection of humidity, pressure, and photothermal stimuli

Yaoyao Ye,Xin Tong,Jiyang Zhou,Yan Zhang,Lizheng Sha,Tianzhong Yuan,Daliang Guo,Jing Li,Yonghao Ni

In recent years, multifunctional sensors have garnered significant attention for various applications, including wearable devices and electronic skins. However, achieving high-precision measurements of multiple stimuli within a single device remains a challenge. Inspired by the functional hierarchy of spider webs, which feature radial and spiral networks, as well as a glycoprotein coating, we developed a multifunctional aerogel sensor based on a biomimetic design. The aerogel skeleton was fabricated by directional freeze-drying of TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) and MXene composites, yielding axially aligned pores that mimic the effective transport pathways of radial and spiral networks. Furthermore, a hydrophilic layer of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH) was subsequently spray-coated on to the surface, forming a glycoprotein coating-like interface. The multifunctional MWCNT/MXene/TOCNF aerogel (MMTA) sensor demonstrates ultrasensitive detection capabilities for humidity, pressure, and photothermal stimuli, showing outstanding sensitivity values (14.35 %RH −1 , −10.51 kPa −1 , −10.53 °C −1 ) over wide detection ranges (11–97 %RH, 0.5–100 kPa, 24 °C–40 °C). This biomimetic approach of translating key structural and functional elements of spider webs into advanced sensor performance demonstrates the effectiveness of nature-inspired design for multifunctional sensing platforms.

Yan Bin,Ding Huizhen,Zhang Yawen,Lin Pei,Wu Di,Shi Zhifeng,Chen Xu,Tian Yongtao,Li Xinjian

Skin-attachable and flexible strain sensors have attracted extensive interests because they enable to monitor individual physical actions, health status, and vibrations of sound. In this paper, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are transfer-printed into Ecoflex substrate to fabricate the MWCNT grid/Ecoflex strain sensors. We investigated the effects of the distribution and amount of MWCNTs on the sensor properties by tuning mesh sizes of nylon screens and repeated times of spray-coating and found that the distribution and amount of MWCNTs could influence on the response equilibrium process of sensors, besides the response value. Among the as-prepared samples, the sensors based on 75-mesh screens with 20-time coating exhibit the fastest equilibrium of response with a relatively high response, which the response time is about 274 ms. Meanwhile, the sensors have a good stability and durability. Furthermore, the as-prepared attachable and flexible strain sensors are capable of monitoring different finger gestures, diverse subtle motions of human body, and vibrations of sound, which demonstrate an application prospects in the fields of human motion detection, electronic skins of bionic robots, and human–machine interfaces.

Lei Sun,Meng Yang,Hao Guo,Tingting Zhang,Ning Wu,Mingyue Wang,Fan Yang,Junye Zhang,Wu Yang

Herein, covalent organic framework (COF) and covalent triazine framework (CTF) have been successfully combined for electrochemical sensing via carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNTs). The COF was synthesized from 1,3,5-tris-(4-formylphenyl) benzene (TFPB) and benzidine (BD), named TFPB-BD-COF. Meanwhile, CTF was synthesized by 1, 4-dicyanobenzene (DCB), then chemically activated with KOH at 700 °C to obtained chemically activated porous product, caCTF-1–700. A novel electrochemical sensor based on TFPB-BD-COF/caCTF-1–700/COOH-MWCNT composite was constructed for simultaneous detection of acetaminophen (ACOP) and 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The electrochemical behaviors of the ACOP and 4-AP on the TFPB-BD-COF/caCTF-1–700/COOH-MWCNT electrode were explored via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The fabricated TFPB-BD-COF/caCTF-1–700/COOH-MWCNT composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) possessed outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the electro-oxidation of acetaminophen (ACOP) and 4- aminophenol (4-AP). Under optimal conditions, the linear ranges were 0.6–150 μM for ACOP and 4-AP, respectively, with the low detection limits of 0.053 μM and 0.075 μM, respectively. In addition, it also showed excellent selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility and stability. The proposed modified electrode was applied for the determination of ACOP and 4-AP in acetaminophen tablet and Yellow river water and obtained satisfactory recovery between 96.31~103.96% and 97.2~101.6%, respectively.

Synergistic Effect of Nitrogen Doping and MWCNT Intercalation for the Graphene Hybrid Support for Pt Nanoparticles with Exemplary Oxygen Reduction Reaction Performance

Kang Fu,Yang Wang,Ying Qian,Linchang Mao,Junhong Jin,Shenglin Yang,Guang Li

The potential of graphene–multi-walled-carbon nanotube (G-M) hybrids prepared by the one-pot modified Hummers method followed by thermal annealing has been demonstrated by employing one as an electrocatalyst support for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). N doping effectively modified the electronic structure of the G-M hybrid support, which was beneficial for the uniform distribution of Pt nanoparticles, and ORR activities were further improved. The newly prepared Pt/N-G-M catalyst demonstrated higher electrochemical activity than Pt/G-M and Pt/G catalysts. Even compared with commercial 20 wt % Pt/C (JM20), Pt/N-G-M delivered a better half-wave potential and mass activity. In terms of the durability test, Pt/N-G-M maintained 72.7% of its initial electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) after 2000 repeated potential cycles between 0 and 1.2 V in acidic media in relation to the 44.4% retention for JM20. Moreover, the half-wave potential for Pt/N-G-M showed only a minimal change, significantly superior to the 139 mV of loss for JM20. It is expected that Pt/N-G-M can be the potential candidate as a highly efficient and durable catalyst if utilized in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).Keywords:oxygen reduction reaction;graphene–multi-walled carbon nanotubes;N doping;proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Novel three-dimensional electrochemical sensor with dual signal amplification based on MoS2 nanosheets and high-conductive NH2-MWCNT@COF for sulfamerazine determination

Yufeng Sun,Longhua Xu,Geoffrey I.N. Waterhouse,Minglin Wang,Xuguang Qiao,Zhixiang Xu

A novel three dimensional electrochemical sensor with signal amplification and selective recognition of sulfamerazine (SMR) was successfully constructed. First, highly conductive amino-functionalized carbon [email protected] organic frameworks (NH 2 [email protected] ) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets were employed to modify the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by simple physical deposition, in order to enhance the SMR response signal. Then, molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) membrane was anchored on the surface of this modified GCE by electrochemical polymerization to achieve selective recognition for SMR. The electrochemical performance of the assembled electrochemical sensor was systematically investigated with differential pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry. This obtained sensor displayed excellent selectivity for SMR and good reproducibility. Under optimal conditions, the sensor offered a wide current response for SMR from 3.0 × 10 −7 to 2.0 × 10 −4 mol L −1 , with a limit of detection of 1.1 × 10 −7 mol L −1 . Furthermore, this developed sensor was successfully applied for the determination of SMR in pork and chicken samples with recoveries of 86.0%–102.0%, and results correlated well with those obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography.

A novel electrochemical sensing platform based on covalent organic frameworks/WC/NH2-MWCNT for highly selective determination of acetaminophen and 4-aminophenol

Zongyan Lu,Hao Guo,Xiaoqin Wei,Lei Sun,Zhilan Pan,Bingqing Liu,Yinsheng Liu,Jiaxi Xu,Jiaying Tian,Wu Yang

In this article, a novel and simple electrochemical sensing platform has been developed for the simultaneous and sensitive determination of acetaminophen (ACOP) and 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The porous covalent organic frameworks (COFs) material with β-ketoenamine-linkage was successfully synthesized via 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) and 2,6-diaminoanthraquinone (DAAQ) and named as TFP-DAAQ-COF. High conductivity walnut shells-derived carbon (WC), amine-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (NH 2 -MWCNTs) with multiple active sites and TFP-DAAQ-COF were combined to obtain composite materials, which were used to modify bare glass carbon electrodes (GCE) and realize the electrochemical analysis of ACOP and 4-AP. The experiments showed that the composite electrode had a strong synergistic effect and exhibited a good electrocatalytic oxidation ability for the two target analytes. The linearity ranges of ACOP and 4-AP were 0.5 ∼ 200 μM and 1.0 ∼ 250 μM, respectively and the detection limits (S/N = 3) were 0.12 μM and 0.18 μM. In addition, the sensor showed acceptable reproducibility, stability and excellent selectivity. The recovery was satisfactory, when it was used to analyze the contents of ACOP and 4-AP in real samples, indicating that the sensor was feasible in practical applications.
