A nanocomposite of flake-shaped manganese-terephthalic acid MOF/single-walled carbon nanotubes (Mn(TPA)-SWCNTs) was synthesized using manganese chloride, terephthalic acid and SWCNTs as raw materials. Theoretical modeling study shows that the Mn(TPA) component has stronger adsorption ability to lead ion (Pb 2+ ) than the other common heavy metal ions , which is in good agreement with the result of electrochemical assay. Then, the Mn(TPA)-SWCNTs were used as a sensing matrix for the voltammetric determination of Pb 2+ . The results displayed that the sensor shows high analytical performance for Pb 2+ due to the synergy of Mn(TPA) with highly selective binding to Pb 2+ and SWCNTs with high electronic conductivity . Under the optimal conditions, the Mn(TPA)-SWCNTs-based electrochemical sensor presented a wide linear response over the concentration range from 0.10 to 14.0 μM. The limit of detection was achieved to be 38 nM. Satisfactory results were also achieved when the Mn(TPA)-SWCNTs-based sensor was utilized for the determination of Pb 2+ in the practical samples of industrial wastewater and human serum, suggesting great promising of the sensor for practical application.

Simple SummaryPb2+and Cd2+contamination in water threatens ecosystems and human health. To develop efficient, eco-friendly adsorbents and valorize industrial by-products (red mud, distiller’s grains), this study synthesized a novel ternary composite biochar (RM) by immobilizing red mud andLactobacillus plantarumon distiller’s grain-derived biochar. Characterized via SEM-EDS, XRD, and FTIR, RM exhibited a superior porous structure. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that the adsorption on RM followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, with Cd2+adsorption fitting the Langmuir model and Pb2+fitting the Freundlich model. Key mechanisms included surface complexation, ion exchange, and coprecipitation. RM integrates the synergistic advantages of minerals, microorganisms, and biochar, offering a promising, sustainable solution for heavy metal-contaminated water remediation.Pb2+and Cd2+represent common heavy metal contaminants in aquatic environments, posing significant risks to ecosystem stability and human health. To develop efficient adsorbents for removing Cd2+and Pb2+while achieving resource utilization of industrial by-products (red mud and distiller’s grains), this study synthesized a novel composite biochar—red mud–Lactobacillus plantarumcomposite biochar (RM)—by immobilizing red mud andLactobacillus plantarumonto biochar derived from distiller’s grains. The structural and chemical properties of RM were characterized using SEM-EDS, XRD, and FTIR. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of various experimental factors on Cd2+and Pb2+adsorption. The adsorption process was further elucidated through kinetic and isothermal models, revealing that it follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Equilibrium data were best described by the Langmuir model for Cd2+and the Freundlich model for Pb2+. The maximum adsorption capacities reached 12.13 mg/g for Cd2+and 130.10 mg/g for Pb2+. The primary mechanisms involved in Cd2+and Pb2+adsorption by RM include surface complexation, cation–π interactions, ion exchange, and coprecipitation. These findings demonstrate that RM represents a promising and effective adsorbent for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated water.

This study examined the feasibility and characteristics of microalgae waste treatment using a mixture of Spirulina platensis and polyacrylamide (SP-PAM) as an adsorbent system for removing Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ from simulated wastewater in single and binary solution systems. Multiple techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and the nitrogen-based Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (N 2 -BET) method, were used to understand the adsorption mechanism of cations in this adsorbent system. Batch sorption studies were conducted to investigate the effects of the initial pH, adsorbent dosage, initial metal ion concentrations and contact time on the adsorption process in single and binary solution systems. The adsorption kinetics of SP-PAM for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ followed a pseudo-second-order model for both the single and binary systems. The adsorption isotherm fit the Langmuir model for Pb 2+ and the Freundlich isotherm for Cd 2+ well, with maximum adsorption capacities of 337 and 232 mg/g, respectively, for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ . The results for the adsorption of SP-PAM in binary solution systems showed Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ exhibited antagonistic and concentration-dependent selectivity, and the decrease in the adsorption of Cd 2+ in the presence of Pb 2+ was larger than that of Pb 2+ adsorption in the presence of Cd 2+ when the initial concentration was higher than 30 mg/L. SP-PAM also had good ability to remove heavy metals in simulated industrial wastewater. In summary, SP-PAM exhibited great potential for use as an alternative adsorbent in the treatment of wastewater containing heavy metal ions.

The present work focuses on developing a highly sensitive ECL sensor for Pb 2+ detection based on WS 2 quantum dots (QDs). A top-down sonication-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation method was employed to synthesize WS 2 QDs which were characterized by TEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemistry. It was found that WS 2 QDs could not only generate mild cathodic ECL itself but also significantly promote the cathodic ECL of lucigenin. The electrochemical results suggested that WS 2 QDs could effectively accelerate the reduction process of dissolved oxygen and lucigenin, thereby greatly amplifying the ECL intensity. The specific interaction between Pb 2+ and WS 2 QDs could significantly decrease ECL signal due to the depletion of WS 2 QDs, based on which an ECL sensor for detecting Pb 2+ was developed. Under the optimal condition, a good linear relationship between the inhibited ECL signal and the logarithm of Pb 2+ concentration was obtained in the range from 1 nM to 50 μM, with a low detection limit of 10.4 pM. Moreover, the fabricated sensor exhibited high sensitivity and excellent selectivity, and could be used for the sensitive detection of Pb 2+ in real samples.

The increasing release of non-biodegradable heavy metals, particularly lead (Pb2+) and cadmium (Cd2+), poses severe risks to ecosystems and human health. Herein, we present a sustainable “treating-waste-with-waste” strategy that simultaneously addresses heavy-metal contamination in water and the accumulation of expanded perlite waste. Expanded perlite waste was directly converted into a high-purity, low-silicaCHAzeolite via a simple, one-pot, template-free hydrothermal conversion. The resulting sodium-exchanged material (Na-CHA-p) demonstrated excellent Pb2+and Cd2+removal performance, featuring ultrafast adsorption kinetics (reaching equilibrium within 5 min for both ions), high adsorption capacities (555.6 mg·g−1for Pb2+and 211.0 mg·g−1for Cd2+), and superior selectivity. This study demonstrates an efficient pathway for the high-value utilization of perlite waste and highlights the strong potential of waste-derivedCHAzeolites as advanced adsorbents for heavy-metal wastewater remediation.

Developed a high-annealing-temperature PCR-assisted GO-SELEX screening strategy. • Enriched GC-rich sequences with strong G-quadruplex folding potential. • Identified a Pb 2+ -specific G4 aptamer Pb-GC-1 with high affinity and selectivity. • Constructed a Pb 2+ -responsive G4 allosteric colorimetric biosensor. • Achieved 10 nM detection limit and high recovery in real food sample testing. Heavy metal pollution, particularly from lead, poses a severe threat to global food safety. We present a novel G-quadruplex (G4) aptamers screening strategy based on high-annealing-temperature PCR-assisted graphene oxide-SELEX (HAT-GO-SELEX) for efficient development of highly specific and sensitive probes targeting Pb 2+ . By systematically elevating the PCR annealing temperature during selection, we enriched sequences with high GC content and structural stability. Analysis of the top 100 candidate sequences from high-throughput sequencing revealed significant enrichment of G-tracts, with 20% consensus G4 formation potential across multiple prediction algorithms. A Pb 2+ -specific G4 aptamer, Pb-GC-1, exhibited high affinity ( K d = 167 nM) and strong specificity. A colorimetric biosensor based on Pb 2+ -induced G4 allosteric switching enabled sensitive detection in real food samples, achieving a detection limit of 10 nM and recoveries of 96.7–102.0%. This work presents an efficient strategy for screening functional G4-based aptamers, advancing the development of rapid detection platforms for heavy metal contaminants. Rich pore structures and functional groups are crucial for adsorbents used for heavy metal removal. In this study, porous functional biochar from corn straw was synthesized using a zinc template method and plasma modification. The impact of synthesis and adsorption conditions on Pb 2+ removal by porous biochar was investigated, and the mechanism was elucidated. The results demonstrated that porous biochar prepared at 600 °C, with a biomass-to-template ratio of 3:1, heating rate of 10 o C/min and further modification by steam plasma (60 kV, water vapor content of 1 %, 5 min) achieved a remarkable Pb 2+ removal efficiency of 90.94 % in aqueous solutions, with an adsorption capacity of 87.2 mg/g. During adsorption, some Pb 2+ was reacted with C-OH groups on the biochar to form Pb(OH) 2 , while the remaining Pb 2+ was transferred to PbCO 3 through reactions with ZnO in the biochar and soluble CO 2 in water. This indicated that ZnO particles and C-OH functional groups generated through plasma modification and the template method on the surface of biochar were primarily responsible for Pb 2+ removal. Both methods effectively enhanced the adsorption and removal performance of the biochar.

The increasing presence of heavy metals and amino acids in environmental and pharmaceutical samples necessitates the development of effective and sensitive detection methods. Traditional analytical techniques often lack the specificity and sensitivity required for simultaneous detection of multiple analytes, leading to a need for novel approaches. In this study, we developed a ratiometric fluorescence probe based on a physical mixture of red and blue carbon dots (R/BCDs) for the selective detection of lead ions (Pb 2+ ) and L-cysteine (L-Cys). The probe was synthesized through hydrothermal methods and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. The R/BCDs probe exhibited a remarkable 11.6-fold fluorescence quenching in response to Pb 2+ , with a detection limit of 15 nM, while subsequent addition of L-Cys showed a 9.6-fold restored fluorescence signal, achieving a detection limit of 75 nM. Additionally, we demonstrated the feasibility of fabricating colorimetric test paper and hydrogels, enabling rapid on-site analysis. This dual-analyte detection capability was demonstrated through successful application in real water and pharmaceutical samples. The R/BCDs probe offers a novel, simple, and effective strategy for environmental monitoring and biological assessments, highlighting its potential for practical applications.

Lead ion is very harmful to the environment, so it is very important to study its detection methods. In this study, a novel electrochemical sensor was constructed by modifying deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) on the electrode, which can be used for the detection of Pb 2+ in the environment. Part of the mixed solution of chitosan (CS) and Pb 2+ template ions was dropped onto the surface of a glassy carbon electrode. CS-Pb 2+ film was cross-linked through sodium tripolyphosphate. And a novel DNA-imprinted sensor was prepared by electrodepositing CS-Pb 2+ thin film with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), removing Pb 2+ templates, and immobilizing specific double-stranded DNA. The electroactive area, surface morphology , sensitivity, and electrochemical reaction mechanism of the DNA-imprinted sensor were analyzed. The elementary reaction steps were studied through electrochemical reaction kinetics analysis . The experimental results indicate that the DNA-imprinted electrochemical biosensor can quantitatively detect Pb 2+ in the range of 10–100 μM (R 2 = 0.9935), and its detection limit is 6.5074 μM (3σ/slope). The sensitivity of the electrochemical biosensor is 1.55233 × 10 −6 A/μM, and its active areas is 6.233 cm 2 . The desorption mechanism and adsorption mechanism have been explored through dynamic parameter analysis. The novel DNA imprinted electrochemical biosensor developed in this paper provides a robust method for detecting lead ions in solution. Additionally, it establishes a solid groundwork for detecting other metal ions .

In this study, a novel fluorescent probe based on CuInS 2 quantum dots modified with alanine (Ala-CuInS 2 QDs) was developed for the detection of lead ions and cysteine (Pb 2+ and Cys). Ala-CuInS 2 QDs were synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method exhibiting uniform size, good stability and water solubility. The QDs were then utilized as an “on-off-on” fluorescence sensor to detect Pb 2+ and Cys in the ranges of 0–20 µM and 0–55 µM respectively, with detection limits of 0.29 µM and 0.66 µM. The mechanism of fluorescence quenching and recovery processes was also explored. Furthermore, Ala-CuInS 2 QDs have been successfully applied to detect Pb 2+ in tap and river water and detect cysteine in serum.

Most sensors use acidic eluent to realize the desorption of Pb 2+ , which inevitably causes damage to the sensing membrane. A near-infrared responsive hydrogel sensing membrane (PNIPAm/PVA/GO) was prepared by free radical polymerization, which was modified on U-shaped optical fiber sensors for the selective determination of Pb 2+ . Graphene oxide (GO) is the functional recognition monomer, and the double-crosslinked network of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) acts as the mechanical stress skeleton while increasing the Pb 2+ adsorption sites and inhibiting the agglomeration of GO. The "self-healing" of the sensing membrane achieves non-destructive desorption without causing secondary pollution to the environment by utilizing the high photothermal conversion efficiency of GO and the temperature response characteristics of PNIPAm. The sensor exhibited a sensitivity of 0.2191 nm/ppb in the 0–100 ppb range; the limit of detection was calculated to be 0.27 ppb. The experimental results show that the sensor has good reproducibility, stability, and selectivity. Further, the proposed signal analysis method based on convolutional neural networks realizes the measurement of Pb 2+ at different pH values. This method can effectively solve the problem of increased selectivity while leading to desorption difficulties and provides a new idea for realizing green, clean, and efficient detection of Pb 2+ .

A novel electrochemical sensor for detecting heavy metal ions in seafood was developed to address food safety concerns. The sensor integrates graphene oxide into NH 2 -UiO-66 loaded nanofiber carbon aerogel, enhanced its three-dimensional conductive network and effective active surface area (0.34 cm 2 ), which improved ion enrichment and oxidation-reduction reaction rates. Using the Box-Behnken design, the sensor was optimized to detect cadmium and lead with LODs of 0.16 μg·L −1 and 0.07 μg·L −1 in the 1 to 150 μg·L −1 linear range. Applied to real seafood samples, the sensor showed results consistent with ICP-OES, confirmed its reliability in complex substrates. This approach offered a promising, low-cost solution for real-time monitoring of heavy metal contamination in seafood, ensuring public food safety.
