Rheological properties of cement paste with in-situ polymerization of sodium acrylate: Roles of polymerization and hydration

Binmeng Chen,Bin Xu,Zhaoyang Sun

In-situ polymerization modified cement paste shows a great potential in 3D concrete printing (3DCP) due to its enhanced rheological properties. Unlike direct adding conventional polymer, how in-situ polymerization and cement hydration synergistically regulate the rheology of cement paste with different monomer dosages remains unclear. Here, we investigate the rheological properties of in-situ polymerization modified cement paste with different dosages of sodium acrylate (SA) to reveal the roles of cement hydration and polymerization. When the monomer dosage is lower (1 % and 3 %), the polymerization inhibits the cement hydration without providing sufficient contribution to the structural development of cement paste, resulting in the decreased rheological properties, such as static/dynamic yield stress and structural build-up rate. On the contrary, once the monomer dosage reaches a higher level (5 % and 7 %), the resultant polymers can gradually form a network interwinding within the cement particles, thus leading to enhanced rheological properties, regardless of the more severely inhibited cement hydration.

Investigation on the effect of metal cation radius on montmorillonite hydration: Combining experiments with molecular dynamics simulation

Min Liu,Han Guo,Jiaqian Luo,Xiahui Gui,Yaowen Xing,Yijun Cao

Colloidal suspension stability is vitally important in industries, including wastewater treatment and mineral purification, and is greatly affected by electrostatic interaction and surface hydration in inorganic salt solutions. Combing the Static Multiple Light Scattering (SMLS), Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring (QCM-D), and Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulation, the effect of cation radius on the montmorillonite hydration is elucidated. It is found that in 1 mol/L chloride solution, the montmorillonite suspension instability decreases in the order of CsCl > CaCl 2  > MgCl 2  > KCl > NaCl. QCM-D experiments in 1 mol/L chloride solution and MD simulation demonstrate that the mobility of strongly hydrated cations and water molecules on the montmorillonite surface, such as Na + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ , is depressed. The distribution of cation and oxygen of water molecules in the normal direction indicates that cation hydration modulates the hydration layer on montmorillonite. It could be concluded that strong hydration of small radius cations could enhance the hydration layer on the hydrophilic surface. The surface hydration is effectively depressed by weekly hydrated Cs + . Therefore, surface hydration depends on both surface hydrophilicity and cation hydration, which strongly corresponds to cation radius and valence. It provides insight into the clay suspension modulation in the engineering application and enrichment of natural elements.

Lihui Li,Kaiming Niu,Jianrui Ji,Panpan Zhang,Jilin Zhang

In order to impart the properties of cementitious material to the Tibetan Agar soil, two high-temperature activation mechanisms (HTMA, HTMB) were designed in this study, and the products and hydration-hardening properties of Tibetan Agar soil high-temperature activation mechanism were analyzed by means of SEM, XRD, and XRF. The results show that the main components of Tibetan Aga soil are calcite and quartz; Aga soil is activated by HTMA high-temperature activation, forming the main products of CaO, C2S, CaSiO3, and CaAl2Si2O8, and its products have both air-hardening and water-hardening characteristics; Aga soil is activated by HTMB high-temperature activation, and when the temperature reaches 1250 °C when the clinker is not found in the CaO, the generation of C2S, C3S, C3A, C4AF, and Mg2SiO4minerals with good water-hardening cementitious properties occurs when the temperature rises to 1350 °C, although the formation of some inert minerals that do not have the cementitious properties, but this temperature activation products of the thermodynamic properties of the best; Enhancing the value of lime saturation degree (KH) and silicon rate (SM) can promote the formation of the products of the C2S and C3S, increase the reactivity of the Aga soil activation products, and increase the hydration heat as well as compressive and flexural strength, combined with the results of the hydration heat and mechanical test, KH is recommended to be 0.9~0.94, SM is recommended to be 1.8~2.4, and alumina ratio (IM) is recommended to be 1.8~2.4 when Aga soil is used with raw materials.

Symmetry Breaking Induced by Hydration-Number Tuning Enables Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Responses in Lanthanum Sulfate Hydrates

Zhang Xiuying,Wu Yebiao,Huang Qiya,Liu Lehui,Chen Peican,Liu Hongming

The tetrahedral [SO 4 ] unit is an attractive building block for ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials because its wide energy gap supports deep-UV (DUV) transparency. However, its high symmetry often favors centrosymmetric (CS) arrangements that preclude second-order NLO responses. To facilitate the formation of noncentrosymmetric (NCS) lanthanide sulfates, we express a hydration-number-tuned symmetry-breaking strategy here. On the basis of the synthetic route for La 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·9H 2 O, 18-crown-6 was utilized as a coordination regulator to modulate the coordination environment of La 3+ cations and the connectivity of structural units. As a result, La 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·8H 2 O, the lanthanum sulfate hydrate with an NCS crystal structure, was synthesized. It crystallizes in space group Pn and exhibits an absorption edge below 200 nm. Moreover, due to the effective superposition of the dipole moments of both the [LaO 5 (H 2 O) 4 ] polyhedron and [SO 4 ] tetrahedron in the structure, it presents a moderate second harmonic generation (SHG) response of approximately 0.51 times that of KH 2 PO 4 (KDP). These results demonstrate that hydration-number regulation can be used to modulate the structural symmetry and NLO properties of lanthanide sulfate hydrates and may provide an exercisable design strategy for sulfate-based DUV NLO materials.

Synergistic Modulation of Oxygen Vacancies and Proton Hydration in Iron-Based Perovskites for Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells

Qiuxia Feng,Liming Zhang,Xinjing Zhang,Zhongwei Cao,Hongbo Li,Peng Zhang,Xuefeng Zhu,Weishen Yang

Proton-conducting ceramics have emerged as a transformative solution for next-generation solid oxide fuel cells for their superior protonic conductivity and high fuel efficiency at intermediate-to-low temperatures. Cobalt-based perovskite oxides stand out as the dominant cathode materials for proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) due to their unparalleled oxygen reduction reaction activity. However, their implementation is constrained by limited natural reserves and high production costs. To address these challenges, we developed a series of cobalt-free BaFe0.8Zr0.2–xGdxO3−δ (BFZGx, x = 0–0.20) cathodes for low-cost PCFCs. Gd doping simultaneously enhanced the oxygen vacancy concentration and proton hydration capacity while also boosting the total conductivity, with an optimal doping amount of 0.1. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrate the outstanding performance of the BFZGx electrodes, with BaFe0.8Zr0.1Gd0.1O3−δ achieving a 1.93-fold power density compared to the undoped counterpart. This work establishes Gd-doped BaFe0.8Zr0.2O3−δ perovskites as promising high-performance and cost-effective cathode materials for PCFCs.

Synergistic enhancement of hydration and polymer network structure in in-situ polymerization cement composites by nano-silica

Maogao Li,Yifan Wang,Tianyi Zhi,Shixuan Zhang,Shouwei Jian,Jian Huang,Xiangguo Li,Yang Lv,Hongbo Tan

In-situ polymerization is an effective approach to enhance the toughness of cementitious materials; however, the associated hydration retardation often leads to significant compressive strength loss. In this study, low-dosage nano-silica (NS) was incorporated into in-situ polymerization-modified cement systems (IPMCs) to regulate hydration kinetics and strengthen the polymer-cement interaction. Calorimetry, phase analysis, polymerization characterization, and microstructural observations revealed that 0.2% NS markedly accelerated hydration and increased the overall reaction degree. Consequently, the 28-day compressive and flexural strengths increased to 50.17 MPa and 17.73 MPa. These enhancements stem from the synergistic effects of NS, including its nucleation-induced hydration acceleration, pozzolanic production of additional C-S-H, and refinement of pore structure. Moreover, hydrogen bonding between NS and polymer chains increased the polymer network’s crosslink density, while C-S-H formed from NS-driven rehydration bridged with polymer chains via Ca 2 ⁺, reinforcing the organic-inorganic interface. This coupled mechanism effectively offsets the hydration inhibition caused by polymerization and provides new insights for designing high-performance polymer-cement composites.

Promoting interfacial free water supply through the hydration of single-atom lanthanide doping for acidic water oxidation

Xiaoshan Hao,Shanshan Lu,Chuanqi Cheng,Qingqing Ruan,Bin Zhang,Yanmei Shi

Interfacial free water plays a vital role in accelerating electrocatalytic water splitting. However, the low proportion of free water at the interface significantly limits the reaction rate. Herein, we demonstrate a new strategy to increase the interfacial free water supply by doping single lanthanide atoms into Co 3 O 4 for acidic oxygen evolution (OER). Taking La as an example, the doped La at the surface of Co 3 O 4 spontaneously captures water molecules from the electrolyte through hydration, providing a sufficient free water supply for the OER. In addition, La doping strengthens Co−O bonding, affording strong structural stability. As a result, La-doped Co 3 O 4 has a small overpotential of 288 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and can remain stable for 230 h. Except for La, other lanthanide elements, such as Sm and Pr, also have similar effects on the OER. Our work not only develops efficient electrocatalysts for the acidic OER but also provides a universal strategy to increase the interfacial free water supply.

Working mechanism of sugar retarders: Insights obtained by oil well cement hydration kinetics study at elevated temperatures

Xueyu Pang,Kenedy Geofrey Fikeni,Xiujian Xia,Jiapei Du,Shenglai Guo,Huajie Liu,Kaihe Lv,Jinsheng Sun

To study the working mechanism of Portland cement retarders, the influences of various types of sugars (sucrose, glucose, and maltodextrin) on the hydration kinetics of oil well cement was evaluated primarily using isothermal calorimetry (IC) test method in the temperature range from 60 °C to 89 °C. By thorough analysis of the experimental data of this study and other relevant studies in the literature, a new retardation mechanism is proposed. Sugars inhibit the hydration of oil well cement by primarily retarding the hydration of silicate phases (mainly C 3 S). The hydration of aluminate phases, which is normally inhibited by the silicate hydration, can be accelerated when the silicate phases are strongly inhibited under high dosage of retarders. Indeed, strong aluminate hydration peaks are observed during the pre-induction period with sugar dosages of 0.2% and higher, and the effect intensifies at high temperatures. The initiation of the silicate hydration peak (main peak) is simultaneously controlled by the overall hydration extent of the cement (which can disrupt the retarder action) and the adsorption stability of the retarder (which is influenced by both retarder type and dosage). Therefore, high sugar dosages (≥0.3%) often causes strong inhibition of C 3 S hydration initially, but the resulted strong acceleration of aluminate hydration can cause earlier initiation of the main peak, resulting in decreased induction period with increasing sugar dosage, especially at elevated temperatures (≥80 °C). The proposed mechanism is further verified using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and quantitative XRD (QXRD) analysis of partially hydrated cement.

Defect and hydration regulation in Ba/Fe co-doped Ruddlesden–Popper nickelate for reversible protonic ceramic cells

Zhenfei Li,Haoteng Yuan,Chenzhao Liu,Anas Mousa,Liyuan Fan,Dong Yan,Bin Hua,Lichao Jia

The practical deployment of reversible protonic ceramic cells requires oxygen electrodes that can operate efficiently and reversibly without relying on cobalt- and strontium-containing perovskites, that often suffer from thermal mismatch, surface segregation, and durability degradation. Here, we report a Sr/Co-free Ba/Fe co-doped Ruddlesden–Popper nickelate, Pr 1.8 Ba 0.2 Ni 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 4+δ (PBNF0.1), as an efficient and stable oxygen electrode. Ba incorporation stabilizes the layered Pr 2 NiO 4+δ framework, while Fe substitution regulates the Ni valence state, promotes oxygen-vacancy formation, and enhances hydration capability, thereby improving oxygen-electrode kinetics. Consequently, PBNF0.1 exhibits reduced polarization resistance compared with Pr 1.8 Ba 0.2 NiO 4+δ (PBN) and delivers excellent reversiblecell performance, achieving 1.28 W cm −2 in fuel-cell mode and −2.47 A cm −2 at 1.3 V in electrolysis mode at 700 °C. Stable operation under fuel-cell, electrolysis, and reversible cycling conditions further highlights Ba/Fe co-doping as an effective strategy for durable Sr/Co-free oxygen electrodes.

Lecithin-based multifunctional composite hydrogel membrane: Synergistic prevention of postoperative tendon adhesion via hydration lubrication and immunomodulation

Yunfei Du,Weijie Zhai,Heng Zhou,Zhenjun Zhu

A natural phospholipid-based fiber-gel interpenetrating network was constructed. • The material exhibits enhanced lubrication performance and anti-adhesion properties. • Reduced intracellular ROS levels were observed in the PCL@ZwitterGel group. • A shift in macrophage polarization toward the M2 phenotype was also observed. Postoperative tendon adhesion is mainly driven by mechanical irritation and oxidative stress-induced inflammation at the injury site, which activates fibroblasts and disrupts the local immune microenvironment, thereby impairing tendon gliding and functional recovery. Thus, a biomaterial integrating lubrication, anti-adhesion, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory functions is urgently needed. Here, we developed PCL@ZwitterGel, a multifunctional lubricating composite, by loading a lecithin-based hydrogel onto an electrospun PCL fiber membrane to form an interpenetrating fiber-gel network. In vitro, PCL@ZwitterGel demonstrates significantly enhanced lubrication performance, with the friction coefficient reduced from 0.42 to 0.018, and suppresses fibroblast adhesion and proliferation. Reduced intracellular ROS levels were observed in the PCL@ZwitterGel group under the tested conditions. Additionally, a shift in macrophage polarization toward the M2 phenotype was also observed. In a rat Achilles tendon adhesion model, PCL@ZwitterGel significantly reduced adhesion formation, enhanced physiological collagen remodeling, and improved functional recovery and mechanical strength. Through synergistic physical lubrication, mechanical isolation, and biological modulation, it offers a promising strategy for preventing postoperative tendon adhesions.

Construction of High-Performance Cu-Glyphosine/Al2O3 Catalyst by Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma for Acetylene Hydration Reaction

Jiaxuan Gao,Shui Liu,Caixia Xu

A copper-based catalyst was prepared via the impregnation method using alumina as the support and subsequently modified by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. The modified copper-based catalyst achieved acetylene conversion of 94% and acetaldehyde selectivity of 78% after 8 h of reaction and maintained high levels of conversion, selectivity, and stability over 15 h of continuous reaction. The experimental results demonstrate that the DBD plasma-modified catalyst exhibits a promotional effect on the acetylene hydration reaction compared to the high-temperature calcined catalyst. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), transmission electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry analyses indicate that compared to the conventionally high-temperature calcined catalyst, DBD plasma modification of catalyst enhances anti-reduction capability of the active copper species, effectively suppresses copper loss and carbon deposits, due to the strong interaction between the Al 2 O 3 and Cu species, thereby significantly improving catalytic performance. Graphical Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma modification of Cu-G/Al 2 O 3 catalysts is developed for acetylene hydration. Compared with conventional high-temperature calcination, DBD plasma markedly strengthens metal–support interaction, which effectively suppresses Cu 2+ reduction, carbon deposition, and copper leaching. Consequently, the DBD-modified catalyst delivers superior performance, with 94% acetylene conversion and 78% acetaldehyde selectivity after 8 h, and significantly longer stability over 30 h, unequivocally outperforming the calcined catalyst.

Catalytic hydration/hydrolysis of bulky and hydrophobic organic compounds in aqueous phase over zeolite-based catalyst efficiently

Xiaowen Yao,Hui Zhuang,Haotian Guo,Xinhuan Lu,Qinghua Xia,Dan Zhou

Hydration/hydrolysis of organic compounds are the fundamental reactions to synthesis functional chemicals. In the recent decade, the requirement for catalytic hydration/hydrolysis of organic compounds in aqueous phase without using any organic solvent has begun to increase due to the advantages of green reaction process, mild reaction condition, and so on, in which water acts as not only reactant but also solvent. However, it is noteworthy that bulky and hydrophobic chemicals have accounted for a considerable proportion of organic chemicals. Therefore, efficiently catalytic hydration/hydrolysis of these compounds in aqueous phase have aroused people’s great interest. Among various types of heterogeneous catalysts, zeolite-based catalysts have become the focus of research due to their excellent physical and chemical properties. However, for traditional three-dimentional zeolites, the balance between hydrophobicity and acid density are hard to be controlled because that both of them are related with the Si/Al ratio of zeolite framework but in opposite direction, and the steric limitation of micropore is not beneficial for the diffusion and mass transfer of bulky compounds. Herein, sulfonic acid functionalized hollownest-structure zeolite have been prepared and applied in the ring-opening hydration of epoxides and hydrolysis of aryl (or naphthalene) esters, which exhibits efficiently catalytic performance and recycling stability. It is mainly ascribed to its unique structure constructed from the highly intergrowth of MWW zeolite lamellae, over which the compatibility of highly exposed and available acid sites, amphiphilic surface, and hierarchical pores is possible. This work not only provides a applicable route for the catalytic conversion of bulky and hydrophobic organic compounds in aqueous phase, but also is instructive for the construction of zeolite-based solid acids with adjustable acid property.
