Hydroquinone is an organic pollutant that poses significant risks to the environment and human health, rapid and effective monitoring is essential. In this work, a simple and efficient electrochemical sensor based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) coated onto a bimetallic metal-organic framework (ZnCo-ZIF-67) was constructed by using an in-situ polymerization strategy at room temperature. The electrochemical sensor demonstrates excellent performance with a broad linear range (2–212 μM, 212–662 μM), high sensitivity (0.51 μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 ), and a low limit of detection of 0.468 μM. The sensor exhibits excellent selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and anti-interference performance. Moreover, it effectively detects hydroquinone in both tap water and industrial wastewater, achieving recoveries ranging from 97.30 % to 102.83 %, with relative standard deviations (RSD) below 3.80 %. These results highlight the significant potential of the sensor for monitoring hydroquinone in environmental water systems.

Hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) are toxic isomers with similar structures that often coexist, leading to interference during detection. In this study, we employed a controllable selenization strategy to construct V 2 CT x MXene-based multiphase electrode materials (VSe 2 @V 2 O 3 @V 2 CT x MXene) for the simultaneous detection of HQ and CC. Electrochemical tests revealed VSe 2 @V 2 O 3 @V 2 CT x MXene modified electrode exhibited low electrochemical impedance, a large active surface area, and excellent electrocatalytic performance. The sensor demonstrated linear detection ranges for HQ and CC from 0.5 to 600 μM, with limits of detection 0.144 μM and 0.131 μM, respectively. Additionally, it exhibited excellent repeatability, reproducibility, selectivity, and stability. The practical applicability of the sensor was confirmed through testing in drinking water and beverages, showing satisfactory recovery rates. This work expands the application of V 2 CT x MXene in the field of electrochemical sensing and offers new insights for food safety monitoring.

Convenient and sensitive detection of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) in environmental samples holds great importance for monitoring. Herein, a vertically-ordered mesoporous silica film (VMSF) supported on the electrochemically pretreated glassy carbon electrode (p-GCE) is prepared by a simple and environmentally friendly electrochemical method and employed to construct a sensitive and anti-fouling sensing interface for quantitative detection of HQ and CC. In virtue of a simple electrochemical polarization, the p-GCE shows enhanced electroactive area and promoted electrochemical activity, as well as oxygen-containing groups, rendering a sensitive electrode substrate with improved analytical performance and the functional interface for stable growth of VMSF. The obtained VMSF/p-GCE has superior electroanalytical capacity toward HQ and CC due to the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding of VMSF and the sensitive p-GCE electrode substrate. The developed VMSF/p-GCE sensor enables the determination of HQ and CC with a wide linear range (1 ∼ 120 μM), high sensitivity (0.368 μA/μM for HQ and 0.404 μA/μM) and low limit of detection (268 nM for HQ and 80 nM for CC). Furthermore, the capacity of the prepared VMSF/p-GCE in the analysis of HQ and CC in environmental water samples and soil leaching solutions has been studied, showing acceptable results and therefore offering a simple and low-cost way for environmental analysis.

Designing dual-functional electrode materials for supercapacitors and pollutant sensors has attracted great interest from researchers for urgent demand in green energy and the environment. In this work, a novel electrode material V 2 CT x @NiCoMn-OH was successfully constructed for dual-functional orientation via a two-step synthesis strategy, in which the NiCoMn-OH with a three-dimensional (3D) hollow structure was fabricated by employing ZIF-67 as a template and simple anion exchange and composited with the two-dimensional (2D) layered V 2 CT x MXene. The intercalation of NiCoMn-OH can effectively limit the self-accumulation of V 2 CT x MXene nanosheets and build a 3D cross-linked hollow structure, thereby broadening the ion transport channel, exposing more active sites of V 2 CT x @NiCoMn-OH, and simultaneously improving the conductivity of NiCoMn-OH. Benefiting from the unique 3D cross-linked hollow structure, the optimized V 2 CT x @NiCoMn-OH-20 electrode material exhibits an excellent specific capacitance of 827.45 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 . Furthermore, the electrode material has excellent capacitance retention of 88.44% after 10,000 cycles. Moreover, the V 2 CT x @NiCoMn-OH-20//AC ASC device displays a high energy density of 88.35 Wh kg −1 as well as high power density of 7500 W kg −1 during operation. Additionally, the V 2 CT x @NiCoMn-OH-20 exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance in the detection of hydroquinone, including the low detection limit of 0.559 μM (S/N = 3) and the wide linear range of 2–1050 μM. Therefore, the prepared V 2 CT x @NiCoMn-OH-20 has great potential applications in the fields of supercapacitors and hydroquinone sensors.

The authors describe a method to anchor gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on carboxy-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs) utilizing chitosan as dispersing and protective agent. A sensor for the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol was then fabricated by placing this nanocomposite on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The morphology and composition of the nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The electrochemical behavior of the modified GCE was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The modified GCE exhibits good electrooxidative activity towards hydroquinone and catechol and therefore was used for simultaneous determination of both, with typical voltages of 30 and 130 mV (vs. SCE). A linear reponse is found for the 0.5 μM to 1.5 mM hydroquinone concentration range, and for the 5.0 μM to 0.9 mM catechol concentration range. The respective lower detection limits are 0.17 and 0.89 μM (at an S/N ratio of 3). The sensitivity is 644.44 μA mM −1 cm −2 for hydroquinone and 770.98 μA mM −1 cm −2 for catechol.
An electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol was fabricated by modifying the c-MWCNTs/CTS/Au nanocomposites on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE).

An electrochemical sensor is described for the simultaneous determination of the pollutants catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ). A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with reduced graphene oxide, Fe 3 O 4 and gold nanoparticles and then showed a pair of well-defined voltammetric peaks for CC and HQ. Its oxidation peak potentials (located at 0.21 and 0.10 V vs. Ag/AgCl) are well separated, and this makes it suitable for simultaneous determination of the two isomers. Under optimal conditions, the oxidation peak currents of CC and HQ increase linearly in the 0.05–550 μM and 0.1–500 μM concentration ranges, even in the presence of 0.1 mM of the respective other isomer. The detection limits are 0.02 and 0.17 μM (at S/ N = 3), respectively. The modified GCE exhibits good selectivity and recovery when applied for the analysis of spiked wastewater.
Ternary hybrid nanomaterials of rGO-Fe 3 O 4 -Au was developed for simultaneous electrochemical determination of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ).

The synergistic effect for a solvent mixture of diisopropyl ether and n-Pentanol to extract hydroquinone from aqueous solution was investigated. Liquid–liquid equilibrium data of the quaternary (n-Pentanol + diisopropyl ether + water + hydroquinone) system were measured at T = 298.15 K and P = 101.3 kPa, using various compositions of solvent mixture. It can be seen from the slope of the tie lines that with the increase of distribution coefficients of hydroquinone, the size of the immiscible solution region decreased slightly. The extraction efficiency was evaluated by calculating the separation factor and distribution coefficient. Using the universal quasichemical (UNIQUAC) and nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) models to correlate with experimental data, the corresponding binary interaction parameters were obtained. The RMSD values of UNIQUAC and NRTL models showed that the calculated results were in good agreement with the liquid–liquid equilibrium data.

A fluorescence method is described for the determination of hydroquinone based on the double carbon dot system as peroxide mimic enzymes and fluorescent probes. Deep eutectic solvent (DES)–based fluorescent carbon dots (N/Cl-CDs) and copper-doped carbon dots (N/Cu-CDs) were prepared by the hydrothermal method. Both carbon dots were characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. N/Cl-CDs displayed intrinsic peroxidase-like activity and were able to catalyze the oxidation of hydroquinone (H 2 Q) to p-benzoquinone (BQ) along with an intermediate. The intermediate (BQ) did quench the N/Cu-CD photoluminescence (PL) at 450 nm using an excitation wavelength of 347 nm. Based on the results, a fluorescent platform is proposed for the determination of hydroquinone with a promising determination limit of 0.04 μM (linear range, 1.0–75 μM). The recoveries of spiked water samples were in the range 89.5–105.1%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.5–2.9%. This method was applied to determination of H 2 Q in environmental water samples.
