An energy-saving catalyst 4%Fe/Ce-Mn-TiO 2 was prepared via a simple one-step impregnation-annealing process and used as a denitration catalyst at low temperature (≤180 °C) and high water content (∼20%). The results show that 4%Fe/Ce-Mn-TiO 2 catalyst exhibits good low-temperature catalytic activity and water resistance attributed to its highly dispersed metal oxide species, more surface-adsorbed oxygen and high stability of particles. The denitrification efficiencies of 4%Fe/Ce-Mn-TiO 2 catalyst are 90% (5% H 2 O) and 70% (20% H 2 O) at 170 ℃ respectively, which are superior to the commercial vanadium catalyst in service usually needs heating up to 220 ℃.

Two-dimensional (2D) Mn–Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets are firstly examined to mediate an O-phenylenediamine (OPD) based fluorescent switch in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA). On one hand, Mn–Fe LDH mimicked the functions of oxidase to catalyze the oxidation of OPD to OPDox, emitting fluorescence at 565 nm. On the other hand, Mn–Fe LDH acts as a superior catalyst for the reaction between AA and OPD to generate 3-(1,2-dihydroxyethyl)furo[3,4-b]quinoxalin-1(3H)-one (N-heterocyclic compound) with an emergence of the maximum emission at 425 nm (ca. 6 fold). The presence of AA not only induces the enhanced emission at 425 nm from the N-heterocyclic compound, but also leads to decreased fluorescence at 565 nm due to the decomposition of Mn–Fe LDH nanosheets. On the basis of the reversed fluorescence response at 425 and 565 nm, ratiometric fluorescence sensing methods (ΔF425 nm/ΔF565 nm) are developed for the determination of AA. With the assistance of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), the activity of ALP can be monitored using the ratiometric platform based on the hydrolyzing ascorbic acid 2-phosphate to yield AA with the detection limit of 0.16 mU mL−1. Different from the traditional ratiometric sensing platform, where two fluorescent probes are often introduced, the present ratiometric system derived from one signal precursor holds great potential in developing a facile platform and broadens the application of 2D nanomaterials in the field of biology.

Membrane fouling is one of the major blockages toward the further sustained development of membrane technology . In this work, PVDF/NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) (PVDF/NM88B) membranes were prepared for the first time via one-step simple non-solvent induced phase conversion method. The PVDF/NM88B membrane shows an excellent separation performance (above 99.4%) and permeation flux (340–1970 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) towards different oil/water emulsions. Moreover, PVDF/NM88B membrane exhibits excellent antifouling performance with flux recovery ratio of almost 100% attributing to hydrophilicity and high photo-Fenton activity of NM88B. In addition, the membrane with good mechanical properties and recyclability shows great application potential in wastewater treatment . This work may shine a new light on the promising photo-Fenton self-cleaning prospect of Fe-based MOFs in constructing antifouling membranes for wastewater remediation and potential applications.

Anaerobic fermentation technology presents significant advantages in waste activated sludge treatment, encompassing sludge reduction, detoxification, and resource recovery, primarily by generating high-value volatile fatty acids (VFAs). This study systematically investigated the enhancement effects of Fe²⁺/sodium percarbonate (SPC) pretreatment on sludge disintegration and organic matter hydrolysis. The optimal pretreatment conditions (initial pH=3, SPC dosage=0.3 g/g TSS, Fe²⁺ dosage=0.3 g/g TSS) resulted in a maximum VFAs production of 1598 mg COD/L, representing a 7.26-fold increase compared to untreated sludge. Under these conditions, acetic acid accounted for 52.9 % of the total VFAs. The mechanistic analysis demonstrated that Fe²⁺/SPC pretreatment selectively enriched hydrolytic-acidogenic microbial communities while inhibiting VFAs-consuming populations, thereby directing metabolic flux toward acid accumulation. These findings establish an innovative technical approach and provide a mechanistic framework for advanced resource recovery from waste activated sludge.

Despite the exceptional fire-suppressant capabilities of ultrafine dry powder fire extinguishing agents, additional work is essential to improve their overall fire-extinguishing performance. In this investigation, we explored the utility of Fe 3+ loaded ZSM-5 zeolite in enhancing the firefighting capabilities of ultrafine dry powder fire extinguishing agents. The loading of transition metal ions Fe 3+ onto the ZSM-5 zeolite was achieved through the ion solution exchange method. Interestingly, the loading of Fe element on Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite displayed a pattern of initial increase followed by decrease as the ion exchange time lengthened. Furthermore, the loading of Fe element on Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite was found to be influenced positively by the initial molar concentration of Fe 3+ and pH levels. Impressively, under specific working conditions, the prepared Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite demonstrated a substantial Fe element loading of 5.82 %. Incorporation of ZSM-5 zeolite resulted in a 10.01 % enhancement in the fire-extinguishing efficiency of the ultrafine dry powder compared to undoped samples. Moreover, the incorporation of Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite has resulted in an enhancement of fire extinguishing efficiency by 20.45 % (S3), 24.20 % (S4), and 29.04 % (S5) in comparison to S1. These findings contribute to the understanding that the incorporation of Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite significantly enhances the fire extinguishing performance of ultrafine dry powder fire extinguishing agents, with extinguishing efficiency improving with increased Fe element loading.

In this study, we demonstrate noble metal-free Fe–N-codoped graphene nanoshells (Fe–N/GNS) derived from petroleum pitch as highly efficient and cost-effective catalysts for nitroaromatics reduction. By employing α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles simultaneously as both the hard template and the metal source, Fe–N/GNS can be facilely synthesized through the template-oriented method, followed by thermal annealing with urea for nitrogen doping. Owing to the high-dispersed synergetic Fe–N active sites as well as the hierarchical porous nanoshell structure, the Fe–N/GNS catalysts show remarkable catalytic performance and good tolerance for the reduction of nitroaromatics with NaBH4 aqueous solution. The optimized Fe–N/GNS-800 corresponds to pseudo-first-order kinetics for p-nitrophenol reduction at room temperature, with the rate constant (k) reaching 1.23 min–1. The reinforced structure also allows the catalyst to be readily recycled a dozen times without activity deterioration. This work may provide a new avenue to facilely fabricate cost-effective but powerful catalysts for nitroaromatics reduction and beyond.

Summary Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have promising atomic utilization efficiency and catalytic activity, but their construction with a specific coordination mode remains challenging. This protocol describes the synthesis of a coordinated Fe-SAC@COF for boosted electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). We also detail the steps for single iron atoms confinement and characterization of the COF and Fe-SAC@COF with X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy technique. A SiC supported iron (Fe–SiC) catalyst was developed for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of carbon nanotubes. Using CO as the carbon source, sole Fe–SiC catalyst was mostly inactive for synthesizing carbon nanotubes and only trace amount of carbon deposits was produced. In contrast, the powder Fe–SiC catalyst could be activated by pressing them onto a flat SiO 2 substrate or by mixing them with porous MgO powders. Particularly, efficient growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was achieved on porous MgO promoted Fe–SiC catalyst, and predominant synthesis of (6, 5) SWNTs was realized at a reaction temperature of 650 °C. Systematic characterizations revealed that the reducibility of the Fe–SiC catalyst was enhanced by the physical contact with oxide support, which promotes the formation of small active Fe nanoparticles for the subsequent SWNT nucleation and growth. This work not only deepens our understandings to the catalyst activation mechanisms, but also helps design composite catalyst for synthesizing SWNTs.

The attenuation process of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance for Fe SAC@G catalysts under different discharging conditions, including KOH concentrations, solution temperatures, and discharging potentials, was investigated by electrochemical measurements. The ORR catalytic activity attenuation resulting from the change in KOH concentration and temperature becomes apparent in a negative discharging potential range and elevated discharging temperature. In addition, the more negative discharging potential significantly causes the ORR catalytic activity attenuation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy analyses indicate that, with the prolongation of the discharge time, the nanocolumns of the as-prepared catalyst gradually dissolve, while a flowerlike discharge byproduct composed of elements C and N keeps growing on the surface of the catalyst. The weakest Fe–N bonds first break, resulting in the attenuation of the ORR catalytical performance. Then, the weak C–Cunit bonds connecting the structural units of the catalysts break, leading to the gradual collapse in the structure of the catalysts. The Fe–N4 coordination structure gradually transforms into Fe–N3, Fe–N2, and Fe–N coordination structures. Based on the analyses combined with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations of bond strength, a discharge attenuation mechanism of the structural collapse of the catalyst for the formation of the discharge byproduct with ring structure is proposed.

Achieving efficient ligand-metal charge transfer remains a significant challenge for constructing high-performance N 2 -fixing MOF photocatalysts. Herein, we successfully fabricated mixed-metal MIL-101(Fe/Cr) materials to achieve ligand-metal charge transfer, leading to significantly improved N 2 fixation performance. Performance test under visible light demonstrated that MIL-101(Fe/Cr) achieved nitrogen fixation activity of 125.19 μmol h −1 g −1 , which is 1.7 times greater than that of pure MIL-101(Fe). The experimental confirm that the incorporation of Cr metal enables the more favorable accumulation of photogenerated electrons at the Fe catalytic centers, attributed to increased electronic interactions and enhanced charge transfer efficiency, thus facilitating the activation process of N 2 , and consequently enhancing ammonia (NH 3 ) production. This work provides new insights into strategies for improving the ligand-metal charge transfer efficiency of MOF-based photocatalytic nitrogen fixation materials.

Graphical All-round activity : Hybrids of Fe/Fe 3 C embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes (Fe/Fe 3 C@NCNTs) are prepared by pyrolyzing mixtures of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and dicyandiamide. Fe/Fe 3 C@NCNTs show a highly multifunctional catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution, oxygen reduction, and CO 2 reduction reactions. Hybrids of Fe/Fe 3 C embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes (Fe/Fe 3 C@NCNTs) are prepared by pyrolyzing mixtures of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and dicyandiamide. The systematic electrochemical study of Fe/Fe 3 C@NCNTs shows a decent catalytic activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The sample of Fe/Fe 3 C@NCNTs at 750 °C exhibits a remarkably high activity with an onset potential of 1.47 V for the OER, and an onset potential of 0.96 V and half-wave potential 0.88 V for the ORR, which inspired us to set up a rechargeable Zn-air battery with such Fe/Fe 3 C@NCNT nanohybrids as the cathode materials, showing a maximum power density of 198 mW cm −2 and long-term stability after 500 cycles. We also demonstrate that Fe/Fe 3 C@NCNTs present favorable electrocatalytic activity towards the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) with a low onset potential and good selectivity. The major products are a mixture of H 2 and CO gases that can be used for methanol production in the Fischer−Tropsch process.

Fe N C is the most promising material to replace the noble metal catalyst for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the practical performance of Fe N C catalyst is significantly limited by its low active site (Fe-N 4 ) density. Herein, we propose to promote the formation of Fe-N 4 active sites in Fe N C catalyst by strengthening the interaction of N precursors and Fe precursors during the carbonization synthesis. In our approach, ionic liquid (IL, [EMIM][NTf 2 ]) with high nitrogen content and good thermal stability is caged in the pores of Fe-ZIF-8 through the host–guest interactions. These interactions are critical for the preservation of Fe and N species and formation of active sites during the synthesis. The optimal catalyst developed with this approach (Fe 0.05 N C/10) has a high density of accessible Fe-N 4 sites (1.88*10 19 sites g −1 ). Therefore, in both acidic and alkaline media, Fe 0.05 N C/10 showed excellent ORR activity comparable to commercial Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, PEMFC performance with a peak power density of 300 mW cm −2 was demonstrated with Fe 0.05 N C/10 under H 2 /O 2 conditions. The synthetic approach reported herein may be used for tailoring of advanced catalyst with high intrinsic activity.
