Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and landfill represent critical point sources for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) emission to the atmosphere. This study aimed to (1) quantitatively characterize both neutral and ionizable PFAS in air samples from these sources, and (2) estimate the potential emission contributions of unknown PFAS precursors. Using an optimized cartridge-based active air sampler, we collected atmospheric samples from a WWTP and landfill in Tianjin, China. Quantitative analysis revealed comparable concentration ranges for neutral (Σn-PFAS: 2,816–564,343 pg/m 3 ) were higher than ionizable PFAS (Σi-PFAS: 4,275–13,360 pg/m 3 ), with 8:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (8:2 FTOH; 2,273–13,360 pg/m 3 ) dominating neutral species and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA; 2,490–10,575 pg/m 3 ) prevailing among ionizable compounds. The total oxidizable precursor assay demonstrated that unknown precursors accounted 46.4–58.4 mol% of total PFAS. These findings provide the quantitative evidence of airborne PFAS speciation and associated unknown precursor-derived emission contributions in the WWTP and landfill.

In this study, Fe(II)-loaded granular activated carbon (GAC) was used as a heterogeneous persulfate catalyst for the pretreatment of mature landfill leachate. The effects of Fe2+ dosage, persulfate concentration and initial pH on the degradation of the organic pollutants in the landfill leachate were investigated. In single factor experiments, the maximum Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal rate reached 66.8, 66.2 and 76.3% at an Fe2+ dosage of 127 mg L−1 (Fe2+/S2O82− = 254 mg mol−1), a persulfate concentration of 0.5 mol L−1 (i.e. S2O82− : 12COD0 = 1.08) and an initial pH of 3, respectively. Obviously, pH played a more important role in the persulfate oxidation treatment than the other two factors. The synthetic experimental results showed that the COD removal rate exceeded 87.8% when the reaction conditions had a controlled Fe2+ dosage of 127 mg L−1, persulfate concentration of 0.5 mol L−1 and initial pH of 3.0, simultaneously. The recycle experiments displayed that the catalytic ability of reused Fe(II)-GAC declined considerably and the COD removal rate dropped by approximately half after reusing three times. But the catalytic ability of the catalyst used could be well recovered after regeneration at 550 °C in a N2 atmosphere. Finally, fluorescence excitation–emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy preliminarily explained the degradation mechanism of the landfill leachate.

A Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium with degradation ability of chitin, designated strain YD-1 T , was isolated from landfill soil sample collected in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, China. The growth of strain YD-1 T occurred optimally in the tryptone soy broth (TSB) with 1.0% NaCl at pH 7.0–8.0, 30 °C. Ubiquinone-8 (Q-8) was the predominant quinone. The polar lipids of strain YD-1 T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, five glycolipids and four lipids. The major fatty acids were iso-C 15:0 (30.7%), iso-C 17:1 ω9c (23.2%), iso-C 11:0 (18.9%), iso-C 11:0 3-OH (6.8%) and iso-C 17:0 (5.9%). Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YD-1 T was affiliated to the genus Luteimonas with the highest similarity to Luteimonas marina KCTC 12327 T (97.3%), followed by Luteimonas aquatica DSM 22088 T (96.5%) and Luteimonas composti CCUG 53595 T (96.4%). The genomic DNA G + C content of strain YD-1 T was 71.8 mol%. Average nucleotide identity (ANI) and the digital DNA–DNA hybridizations (dDDH) for draft genomes between strain YD-1 T and Luteimonas marina KCTC 12327 T were 82.7% and 26.1%, respectively. On the basis of genotypic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data, strain YD-1 T is considered to represent a novel species to degrade chitin in the genus Luteimonas , for which the name Luteimonas wenzhouensis sp. nov. is proposed, with YD-1 T (= KCTC 72425 T = CCTCC AB 2019153 T ) as the type strain.
