High-performance solid oxide fuel cell based on iron and tantalum co-doped BaCoO3-δ perovskite-type cathode and BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ electrolyte

Shujun Peng,Song Lei,Sisi Wen,Guowei Weng,Kun Ouyang,Zongjie Yin,Jian Xue,Haihui Wang

Proton conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H–SOFCs) have attracted much interest for their various advantages. BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3-δ (BZCYYb) displays both good proton conductivity and stability among all of the barium zirconate-cerate oxides such as BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCY) with proton conducting. In this study, an Fe and Ta co-doped perovskite-type oxide with the composition of BaCo 0.7 Fe 0.2 Ta 0.1 O 3-δ (BCFT) is synthesized by the solid state reaction (SSR) method and studied as a high-performance cathode for H–SOFCs operated between 650 and 800 °C. The BCFT is chemically compatible with BZCYYb electrolyte, even co-sintering at 1000 °C for 10 h. The activating energy (Ea) of electrical conductivity for the BCFT sample is only 0.038 eV. The BCFT demonstrates superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics than that of BaCo 0.7 Fe 0.2 Nb 0.1 O 3-δ (BCFN), when the Nb is completely substituted by Ta. The Ea of the polarization resistance (Rp) for BCFT is 0.911 eV, which is 0.11 eV lower than that of BCFN. The peak power density (PPD) of the anode-supported H–SOFC using BCFT is 1.65 W cm −2 and the Rp is 0.01 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C. Therefore, the BCFT is a promising cathode for H–SOFCs based on BZCYYb electrolyte.

A novel Sc-doped La0.6Sr0.4CoO3−δ cathode for proton ceramic fuel cells

Nie Yujia,Qian Guangren,Chen Youdong,He Jia,Zhou Wei,Xiao Hanning

The proton ceramic fuel cell (PCFC) is a cutting-edge technology for achieving carbon-free and efficient energy conversion. It has garnered significant attention in the clean energy sector due to its environmental adaptability and fuel compatibility in the low to medium temperature range of 500 to 700 °C. The intrinsic properties of cathode materials significantly affect the electrochemical performance of PCFC. In this study, a novel Sc-doped La 0.6 Sr 0.4 CoO 3−δ cathode was designed and synthesized using the sol–gel method, and its electrochemical performance in the PCFC was systematically investigated. Test results under hydrogen fuel conditions demonstrated that the single cell using the La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Sc 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3−δ cathode exhibited a respectable power output capability at 700 °C, achieving a peak power density (PPD) of 556 mW cm −2 and polarization impedance of 0.217 Ω cm 2 . Notably, the cell exhibited a performance degradation rate as low as 0.013% h −1 after 100 h of operation at a constant current discharge of 342 mA cm −2 , with the open-circuit voltage and PPD maintaining 98.5% and 107% of their initial values, respectively. This study provides valuable reference for the design of perovskite cathodes for PCFC.

High-performance Co-free dual-phase perovskite positrodes for protonic ceramic cells: Zn and Ni-doped BaCe0.2Fe0.8O3-δ system

Shihang Guo,Lin Wang,Chenyang Xue,Sumei Lin,Tingxuan Yi,Yuwen Zhu,Donglin Han

Protonic ceramic cells (PCCs) can convert the energy between electricity and fuels efficiently, and are attracting increasing attention. However, the development of PCCs is restricted by the lack of proper positrode materials. In this work, we report a Co-free system with a nominal composition of BaCe 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ , which is composed of a Fe-rich matrix phase decorated with Ce-rich nanoparticles. The performance of such a dual-phase positrode system is further improved by doping Zn and/or Ni to increase bulk and surficial concentration of oxygen vacancies. The hydration reaction and surficial adsorption of oxygen species are thereby promoted, benefitting the oxygen reduction reaction. The Ni and Zn co-doped composition Ba(Ce 0.2 Fe 0.8 ) 0.85 (Ni 0.5 Zn 0.5 ) 0.15 O 3-δ exhibits lower polarization resistance than the pristine and singly doped systems, enabling the fuel cells to show high peak power densities of 400, 721, and 828 mW cm −2 at 550, 600, and 650 °C, respectively.

Improving the conductivity and dimensional stability of anion exchange membranes by grafting of quaternized dendrons

Xiangtai Wei,Jianrong Wu,Hao Jiang,Xinsheng Zhao,Yuanqin Zhu

High conductivity is critical for the practical applications of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in fuel cells. In this study, a new strategy for enhanced conductivity and dimensional stability of AEMs by incorporating quaternized dendrons is proposed. Thanks to the introduced quaternized dendrons, distinct nanoscale phase separation and well-connected ion conductive channels are formed in the as-prepared membranes (PPO-QG-x). As a result, PPO-QG-x AEMs achieve high hydroxide conductivities up to 65.5 mS cm −1 at 20 °C and 121.5 mS cm −1 at 80 °C (IEC = 1.95 mmol g −1 ), while possessing good dimensional stability. Meanwhile, PPO-QG-x AEMs show good alkaline stability with the maximum loss in conductivity of 15.1% after treated in 2 M NaOH at 80 °C for 960 h. In addition, the single-cell assembled with PPO-QG-12 membrane exhibit a peak power density of 249.4 mW cm −2 at 60 °C. Overall, this work provides a new insight to achieve high conductivity of AEMs. Graphical

Improving Performance of a Passive Direct Methanol Fuel Cell by Hydrophobic Treatment for Cathode Current Collector

Xiaozhong Shen,Weibin Yu,Zihao Zhang,Lu Lu,Weiqi Zhang,Huiyuan Liu,Huaneng Su,Lei Xing,Qian Xu

This study employs hydrophobic modification of the current collector to optimize cathode water management and enhance the performance of passive DMFCs. The surface of the cathode current collector was hydrophobized by polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating and titanium dioxide/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite coating. The experimental results showed that the surface hydrophobic treatment significantly improved the cell performance at low methanol concentration and marginally improved the cell performance at high methanol concentration. Among them, the DMFC with bilayer TiO2/PDMS hydrophobic-treated cathode current collector with a contact angle of 153.2° showed the best performance, which achieved superhydrophobicity and led to a peak power density that was 27.25% higher compared to the DMFC with an untreated current collector. With the gradient-based hydrophobic treatment for the cathode current collector, the best performance was achieved when double-layer TiO2/PDMS was used on the MEA side and PTFE coating on the air side.

Simultaneous regulation on solvation shell and electrode interface for sustainable zinc-based flow batteries

Tao Xuan,Xusheng Cheng,Liwei Wang

The practical implementation of Zn-based flow batteries encounters the challenges associated with uneven deposition of Zn ions and undesirable side reactions. Here, a hybrid Zn-based electrolyte system composed of ZnBr 2 , ethylene glycol (EG), H 2 O and potassium gluconate (KGlu) is developed as anolyte to modulate the solvation structure and interface engineering for a sustainable Zn-based flow battery. The EG molecules could exclude water molecules outside the solvation structure, inhibiting the water-induced side reactions and Zn corrosion. Moreover, the incorporation of potassium gluconate constructs an artificial stable anionic interface for dendrite-free Zn deposition. Chemical stability and hydrogen evolution potential tests demonstrate that the activity of water molecules could be suppressed in the EG-containing hybrid electrolyte. Deposition morphologies and Zn//Zn symmetric flow battery tests also reveal that gluconate anions preferentially adsorbed on zinc anode could effectively facilitate uniform zinc deposition. As a result, the Zn-based flow battery with the proposed hybrid electrolyte delivers a stable cycling performance over 200 cycles and high reversibility with an average CE of over 97.4 % at 20 mA cm −2 , exhibiting a peak power density of 103.2 mW cm −2 . This work provides a universal electrolyte design strategy for realizing a sustainable Zn-based flow battery.

Highly conductive and stable hybrid ionic cross-linked sulfonated PEEK for fuel cell

Juanjuan Han,Ying Wu,Jing Pan,Yanqiu Peng,Ying Wang,Chen Chen,Qiyun Pan,Bo Xie,Nian Zhao,Yu Wang,Juntao Lu,Li Xiao,Lin Zhuang

An ideal proton exchange membrane for fuel-cell application should possess excellent dimensional stability, high ionic conductivity and inexpensiveness. Introducing cross-links into the polymer structures is a popular strategy to alleviate the tradeoff between swelling ratio and ionic conductivity of high ion exchange capacity proton exchange membranes. However, the cross-links in these membranes will block the transport of H + , resulting in unfavorable decrease of conductivity. Here we report a systematic study of ac SPEEK-S x membranes with alkyl chain attached ionic cross-links to demonstrate how the unique cross-links can improve both the conductivity and swelling behavior of the materials. Compared to the conventional SPEEK , in addition to high anti-oxidative stability, the ionic conductivity and swelling behavior of the ac SPEEK-S x samples are significantly improved. A high proton conductivity of 101.2 mS cm −1 and a low swelling degree of 15.0% are observed in the ac SPEEK-S 6 membrane at the temperature of 80 °C. Based on the high-performance ac SPEEK-S 6 sample, a peak power density of 750 mW cm −2 is achieved at 60 °C, which is similar or superior to those of Nafion 112 (710 mW cm −2 ) under the same measurement conditions.

Crosslinked poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) with a macromolecular crosslinker for anion exchange membrane fuel cells

Wangting Lu,Zhi-Gang Shao,Geng Zhang,Yun Zhao,Baolian Yi

A new material based on crosslinked poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (PVBC) with a macromolecular crosslinker is synthesized and employed as the membrane for anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). PVBC is used as the hydroxide conducting polymers , while poly(vinyl acetal) (PVAc) containing dimethylamino groups plays the role as macromolecular crosslinker and the supporting matrix simultaneously. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) absorption spectra and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectra prove successful crosslinking between PVBC and PVAc. The crosslinked membrane shows hydroxide conductivity larger than 0.01 S cm −1 at room temperature , and the swelling by water at elevated temperature is suppressed. The H 2 /O 2 AEMFC using the crosslinked membrane shows a peak power density ( P max ) of 124.7 mW cm −2 at 40 °C, and the decrease of the open circuit voltage (OCV) of the fuel cell is negligible under continuous OCV conditions for 120 h. All the results indicate that the crosslinking with a macromolecular crosslinker may be a promising strategy to fabricate anion exchange membrane for the application in the AEMFCs.

Molecular catalysts with electronic axial stretching for high-performance lean-oxygen seawater batteries

Quanjun Tang,Liang Bai,Chen Zhang,Rongwei Meng,Li Wang,Chuannan Geng,Yong Guo,Feifei Wang,Yingxin Liu,Guisheng Song,Guowei Ling,Haitao Sun,Zhe Weng,Quan-Hong Yang

A dissolved-oxygen seawater battery (SWB) can generate electricity by reducing dissolved oxygen and sacrificing the metal anode at different depths and temperatures in the ocean, acting as the basic unit of spatially underwater energy networks for future maritime exploration. However, most traditional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts are out of work at such ultralow dissolved oxygen concentration. Here, we proposed that the electronic axial stretching of the catalyst is essentially responsible for enhancing the catalyst’s sensitivity to dissolved oxygen. By modulating the lattice of iron phthalocyanine (FePc) as a model catalyst, the unique electronic axial stretching in the z -direction of planar FePc molecules was realized to achieve a boosted adsorption and electron transfer and result in a much improved ORR activity in lean-oxygen seawater environment. The peak power density of a homemade SWB using a practical carbon brush electrode decorated by the FePc is estimated to be as high as 3 W L − 1 . These results provide inspiring insights into the interaction between the catalyst and complicated seawater environment, and propose the electronic axial stretching as an effective indicator for the rational design of catalysts to be used in extremely lean-oxygen environment.

Non-metal doping enhsances oxygen reduction kinetics and CO2 tolerance of SrFeO3-δ perovskite as high-performance cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells

Yuxi Sun,Chuangang Yao,Zhe Zhang,Baixi Xia,Haixia Zhang,Jingyi Ding,Li Zhang,Wenwen Zhang,Xiaoshi Lang,Kedi Cai

The sluggish of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and the susceptibility to CO 2 interactions are major barriers to the widespread application of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this study, a non-metal cation doping strategy was employed to enhance the ORR catalytic activity and CO 2 tolerance of SrFeO 3- δ cathode. SrFe 1- x P x O 3- δ (SFP x , x  = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) materials were synthesized by substituting phosphorus (P) for Fe in SrFeO 3- δ . The doping of P facilitated the formation of oxygen vacancies in SrFeO 3- δ , enhancing oxygen adsorption, dissociation, diffusion, and charge transfer processes, leading to a notable increase in ORR catalytic activity. At 800 ℃, the polarization resistance of SFP 0.15 was 0.08 Ω cm 2 , a reduction of 42.86 % compared to undoped SrFeO 3- δ . Additionally, SFP 0.15 achieved a peak power density of 749.36 mW cm 2 , representing a 91.99 % enhancement over SrFeO 3- δ . These findings suggest that non-metal cation doping is an effective approach to boost the performance of SrFeO 3- δ perovskite cathode.

Implanting oxophilic metal in PtRu nanowires for hydrogen oxidation catalysis

Huang Zhongliang,Hu Shengnan,Sun Mingzi,Xu Yong,Liu Shangheng,Ren Renjie,Zhuang Lin,Chan Ting-Shan,Hu Zhiwei,Ding Tianyi,Zhou Jing,Liu Liangbin,Wang Mingmin,Huang Yu-Cheng,Tian Na,Bu Lingzheng,Huang Bolong,Huang Xiaoqing

Bimetallic PtRu are promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen oxidation reaction in anion exchange membrane fuel cell, where the activity and stability are still unsatisfying. Here, PtRu nanowires were implanted with a series of oxophilic metal atoms (named as i-M-PR), significantly enhancing alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity and stability. With the dual doping of In and Zn atoms, the i-ZnIn-PR/C shows mass activity of 10.2 A mg Pt+Ru −1 at 50 mV, largely surpassing that of commercial Pt/C (0.27 A mg Pt −1 ) and PtRu/C (1.24 A mg Pt+Ru −1 ). More importantly, the peak power density and specific power density are as high as 1.84 W cm −2 and 18.4 W mg Pt+Ru −1 with a low loading (0.1 mg cm −2 ) anion exchange membrane fuel cell. Advanced experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations collectively suggest that dual doping with In and Zn atoms optimizes the binding strengths of intermediates and promotes CO oxidation, enhancing the HOR performances. This work deepens the understanding of developing novel alloy catalysts, which will attract immediate interest in materials, chemistry, energy and beyond.

Barium cerate-zirconate electrolyte powder prepared by carbonate coprecipitation for high performance protonic ceramic fuel cells

Zidai Fan,Dan Cao,Mingyang Zhou,Ziyi Zhu,Meilong Chen,Jiang Liu

Proton-conducting perovskite oxide BaCe 0.7 Zr 0.1 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCY) is prepared by carbonate coprecipitation method using Tween-80 as the surfactant . A powder with well dispersed particles of an average size of 200 nm is obtained. The powder is applied as the original material of the electrolyte in an Ni-based anode-supported protonic ceramic fuel cell (PCFC). The electrolyte can be densified to high density after co-sintering with the anode substrate, without any sintering aids, at 1400 °C in open air. The PCFC with an electrolyte thickness of 20 μm, using humid hydrogen (3% H 2 O) as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant, gives a peak power density of 1050 mW cm −2 at 700 °C. The conducting activation energy of the electrolyte is 0.36 eV. The superiority of the BZCY powder prepared by the coprecipitation method is investigated by comparing with a BZCY powder made by conventional solid-state reaction method.
