Polyphenylene sulfide nonwoven-based composite separator with superior heat-resistance and flame retardancy for high power lithium ion battery

Dan Luo,Meng Chen,Jing Xu,Xianze Yin,Jing Wu,Shaohua Chen,Luoxin Wang,Hua Wang

In this study, a new alternative nonwoven based on engineering plastic polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) was explored as the support to construct high performance and safety separator for the first time. By the method of physical coating polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and inorganic nanoparticle SiO 2 on the support, the designed composite separator was successfully obtained for lithium ion battery . Systematic investigations ranging from physical properties, thermal properties to electrochemical performances were carried out. It was found that compared with commercialized polyolefin separator, PPS nonwoven-based composite separator possessed higher porosity, air permeability , improved electrolyte wettability and electrolyte uptake, thus being helpful for lithium ion transfer between electrodes and increasing the ionic conductivity . These behaviors accordingly endowed battery with superior discharge capacity at various discharge current rates from 0.2 C to 2 C. Moreover, the composite separator was observed to exhibit excellent dimensional stability even after thermal treatment at 250 °C and present good flame retardant ability. The afore-mentioned outstanding performances of PPS nonwoven-based composite separator would shed light on the development of high power lithium ion battery .

Surface fibrillation of para-aramid nonwoven as a multi-functional air filter with ultralow pressure drop

Kangli Xu,Jixia Deng,Rui Lin,Heng Zhang,Qinfei Ke,Chen Huang

Nonwovens are widely applied in the air filtration field for their multi-layered fibrous structures and interconnected pores. Despite their intensive use, conventional microfiber nonwovens usually suffer from low filtration efficiencies due to their large pore size, while most nanofiber nonwovens are still confined within the laboratory due to the difficulties of reconciling the comprehensive requirements (such as low pressure drop, high fluffiness, strength and long-term reliability) raised from practical applications. Herein, we report a simple and scalable method that can generate more nanofibrils in a para-aramid microfiber nonwoven without interfering with the three-dimensional nonwoven structure. The success of this method relies on treating the whole nonwoven, rather than individual fibers, with phosphoric acid to trigger a surface fibrillation process of para-aramid microfibers. The structural reinforcement from microfibers, in combination with the enlarged surface area and the reduced pore size brought by nanofibrils, improves the filtration efficiency of the fibrillated nonwoven by 84.7% and maintains the pressure drop at an ultralow value of 3.5 Pa. Further synthesis and loading of a novel catalyst (CuO–CeO2) onto the nonwoven demonstrates a higher catalyst-loading capacity after fibrillation. The resulting nonwoven filter shows high elimination rates against a variety of solid and gaseous pollutants (including particulate matter, carbon monoxide and toluene), and is applicable at both room and elevated temperatures. We believe that the generation of nanofibrils in microfiber nonwovens and the subsequent loading of catalysts will find extensive utility in the purification of industrial emissions, automobile exhausts and indoor air.

Gradient Porous Structured MnO2-Nonwoven Composite: A Binder-Free Polymeric Air Filter for Effective Room-Temperature Formaldehyde Removal

Zijian Dai,Jianyong Yu,Yang Si

Recently, MnO2-coated polymeric filters have shown promising performance in room-temperature formaldehyde abatement. However, a commonly known concern of MnO2/polymer composites is either MnO2crystal encapsulation or weak adhesion. This work reports a low-cost high-throughput and green strategy to produce binder-free MnO2-nonwoven composite air filters. The production approach is energy saving and environmentally friendly, which combines MnO2crystal coating on bicomponent polyolefin spunbond nonwovens and subsequent heat immobilizing of crystals, followed by the removal of weakly bonded MnO2. The binder-free MnO2-nonwoven composites show firm catalyst-fiber adhesion, a gradient porous structure, and excellent formaldehyde removal capability (94.5% ± 0.4%) at room temperature, and the reaction rate constant is 0.040 min−1. In contrast to the MnO2-nonwoven composites containing organic binders, the HCHO removal of binder-free filters increased by over 4%. This study proposes an alternative solution in producing catalyst/fabric composite filters for formaldehyde removal.Keywords:MnO2;bicomponent polyolefin nonwovens;polymeric filter;binder-free;HCHO removal

Multifunctional wearable strain/pressure sensor based on conductive carbon nanotubes/silk nonwoven fabric with high durability and low detection limit

He Yuxin,Zhou Mengyang,Mahmoud M. H. H.,Lu Xushen,He Guanyu,Zhang Li,Huang Mina,Elnaggar Ashraf Y.,Lei Qiang,Liu Hu,Liu Chuntai,Azab Islam H. El

With the rapid development of flexible wearable strain sensor systems, electronic textiles with comfort and controllable strain/pressure-sensing capabilities have attracted great interest. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare multifunctional wearable strain/pressure sensor with an ultra-low detection limit through a facile and cost-effective method. Here, conductive carbon nanotubes modified silk nonwoven fabric (CNTs/SNWF) composite was successfully prepared by the surface micro-dissolution and adhesion technology (SD&AT). Micromorphology analysis showed that CNTs were adhered firmly on the surface of silk fiber to form an effective conductive network. The conductive CNTs/SNWF-based strain/pressure sensor can detect a strain as low as 0.05% and an ultralow pressure of 10 Pa, showing an ultrahigh discernibility. Besides, it also exhibited excellent sensing stability and reproductivity under different conditions, making it applicable in the field of real-time human movement monitoring. Moreover, electronic skin was also established based on the conductive CNTs/SNWF to recognize different tactile stimulus. Interestingly, the prepared conductive CNTs/SNWF also displayed great applicability for optical and thermal sensing, endowing it with more functionality for next-generation wearable electronics. Virucidal and biodegradable specialty cellulose nonwovens as personal protective equipment against COVID-19 pandemic

Chao Deng,Farzad Seidi,Qiang Yong,Xiangyu Jin,Chengcheng Li,Ling Zheng,Zhenghong Yuan,Huining Xiao

Introduction Face masks are regarded as effective Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the dominant polypropylene (PP)-based masks are devoid of antiviral/antibacterial activities and create enormous environmental burdens after disposal. Objectives Here we report a facile and potentially scalable method to fabricate biodegradable, breathable, and biocidal cellulose nonwovens (BCNWs) to address both environmental and hygienic problems of commercially available face masks. Methods TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nonwovens are rendered antiviral/antibacterial via covalent bonding with disinfecting polyhexamethylene guanidine or neomycin sulfate through carbodiimide coupling chemistry. Results The obtained results showed that the BCNWs have virucidal rate of >99.14%, bactericidal efficiency of >99.51%, no leaching-out effect, and excellent air permeability of >1111.5 mm s −1 . More importantly, the as-prepared BCNWs can inactivate SARS-CoV-2 instantly. Conclusions This strategy provides a new platform for the green fabrication of multifunctional cellulose nonwovens as scalable bio-protective layers with superior performance for various PPE in fighting COVID-19 or future pandemics. Additionally, replacing the non-biodegradable non-antimicrobial PP-based masks with the cellulose-based masks can reduce the plastic wastes and lower the greenhouse gas production from the incineration of disposed masks.

Preparation of PP non-woven fabric with good heavy metal adsorption performance via plasma modification and graft polymerization

Peng Wei,Hejuan Lou,Xiumi Xu,Wenjie Xu,Hongying Yang,Wei Zhang,Yifeng Zhang

In this study, a facile approach to efficiently improve hydrophilic and metal ion adsorption performance of the PP non-woven material was proposed. Low temperature plasma technology was first used to produce polar groups on surface of the fabric. Chitosan and 1-vinylimidazole were then grafted on the surface via a series of chemical reactions to get skill in chelating with the copper ions of wastewater. The effect of low temperature plasma treatment time and power on the hydrophilic properties and surface morphology of PP non-woven fabric were investigated to acquire the best processing parameter. The structure and morphology of the grafted fabric was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), respectively. Contact angle and Cu 2+ adsorption test were used to evaluate the hydrophilicity and adsorption properties of the grafted fabric. It was shown that the grafted fabric was more hydrophilic than that of the pristine fabric and the adsorption capacity was positively correlated with the time and concentration. Per-gram fabric could trap 28.21 mg copper ions after adsorption for 300 min in copper ion solution with a concentration of 1.0 g/L. The grafted PP non-woven fabric has great potential application in environmental protection field.

A Novel flame-retarded PLA Nonwoven material via Solution Blow Spinning with Bio-based Furan Flame Retardant

Shun Chen,Shuhan Ye,Wei Wang,Lingxin He,Wenwen Guo

Bio-based flame retardants are of great significance for ecological environments, sustainable development and human health. Herein, a novel DOPO-based furan-containing flame retardant (FAD) was successfully prepared by DOPO and bio-based compounds (furfural and furfurylamine) via the Schiff base-addition reaction. Subsequently, flame-retardant nonwoven materials with excellent thermal stability, flame retardancy, and carbonization performance were obtained by solution blow spinning technology. The thermal stability and flame-retardant property of the original PLA nonwoven material and the flame-retardant PLA nonwoven materials were analyzed by TGA, LOI, UL-94 flammability tests, and cone calorimetry. Compared to the original PLA nonwoven material, the flame-retardant nonwoven materials showed significantly improved flame-retardant properties. When the addition amount of the flame retardant FAD was 10% (P-FAD-10), the LOI of P-FAD-10 significantly reached 31%, and the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) decreased by 14.9% and 21.4%, respectively, compared to the original PLA nonwoven material. Additionally, P-FAD-10 passed the UL-94 V-0 rating with better anti-dripping. This novel P and N-containing bio-based flame retardant FAD and its flame-retardant PLA nonwoven material provide a green and efficient solution for developing high-performance, bio-based flame-retardant nonwoven materials.

Temperature/Pressure Dual-Mode Flexible Sensors: PP Nonwoven-Based and Low-Temperature Polymerized with Pyrrole

Peng Hao-Kai,Shi Yong-Ye,Yu Yang,Li Ting-Ting,Zhang Xiao-Yang,Fan Xiao-xuan,Lin Jia-Horng

In recent years, flexible wearable sensors received significant attention from academia. Most sensors feature a single mode. Consequently, the production of wearable multimode flexible sensors that possess characteristics of flexibility, multimodal, and sensitivity remains a challenge. In this study, a fabric-based dual-mode flexible sensor is proposed. A polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric is first modified using polydopamine, impregnated with carbon ink, and low-temperature polymerized with pyrrole. Although the resulting sensors can detect stimuli from temperature and pressure, they also exhibit certain characteristics, such as lightweight, softness, and air permeability. Test results indicate that the flexible sensors efficiently function in detecting temperature and pressure, showing good stability. Specifically, the sensors exhibit adequate abilities in measuring and distinguishing two stimuli with a maximal temperature sensitivity coefficient of 0.447% °C −1 and sensitivity of 0.228 kPa −1 at a pressure zone of 0–45 kPa. The test results prove that dual-mode sensors demonstrate more advantages than single-mode ones. Therefore, the proposed sensors are a valuable reference for wearable equipment in the sports and health hygiene fields.

Polypropylene non-woven supported calcium alginate hydrogel filtration membrane for efficient separation of dye/salt at low salt concentration

Yue Zhang,Kongyin Zhao,Zhijian Zhang,Huike Xie,Ziyi Li,Ze Lin,Chen Mo,Wendong Yang,Xiaolei Wang,Junfu Wei

Calcium alginate hydrogel is an eco-friendly material, but its wide application as a self-supporting filtration membrane is severely limited by the weak mechanical properties, which makes it difficult for the large scale preparation and the fixation of the membrane in filtration equipment. In this work, a fiber-reinforced calcium alginate membrane (CaAlg-PP) was prepared by coating calcium alginate (CaAlg) hydrogel on the polypropylene (PP) non-woven fabric treated with ethanol/water (v:v = 1:1) solution. The CaAlg-PP filtration membrane was characterized and used for dye/salt separation under a series of operating conditions. The membrane exhibited the co-operativity of the porous support layer and the CaAlg hydrogel in the compositing process, and also exhibited good pressure resistance, pollution resistance and low anionic dye adsorption efficiency. The optimized CaAlg-PP membrane had a high permeance (e.g. 20.3 L·m −2 ·h −1 for methyl blue at 0.1 MPa) and high dye rejection (e.g. methyl blue 99.5%), while low salt rejection (e.g. NaCl 7.5%), and the selectivity of methyl blue/NaCl was up to 185. The CaAlg-PP membranes made with simple processes and low-cost materials may provide new strategies for environmentally-friendly and economical low salts-containing wastewater treatment and dye recycling.

The Effect of Polydopamine on an Ag-Coated Polypropylene Nonwoven Fabric

Chuanmei Liu,Jie Liu,Xin Ning,Shaojuan Chen,Zhengqin Liu,Shouxiang Jiang,Dagang Miao

A practical method for preparing multifunctional polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabrics with excellent stability and durability was explored. First, the PP nonwoven fabric was sputtered by a magnetron sputtering system to form an Ag film on the surface of the fabric. Subsequently, the coated fabric was treated with dopamine. The fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), electrical conductivity, electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE), antibacterial activity, stability, and laundering durability. The results of the study revealed that the fabric was coated with Ag, and after the treatment with dopamine, the surfaces of Ag-coated fibers were coated with polydopamine (PDA). The fabrics still had a sheet resistance below ~15 Ω/sq and exhibited excellent EMI SE above ~25 dB, though few differences existed from the single Ag-coated sample. After the treatment with dopamine, the antibacterial activity of the fabric was enhanced. Meanwhile, the treated samples exhibited excellent resistance against sodium sulfide corrosion, which could enhance the stability of the Ag-coated fabric. Moreover, the laundering durability of the treated fabric was improved in the same process, whose lowest sheet resistance was ~18 Ω/sq and the EMI SE was ~8 dB more than single Ag-coated PP nonwoven fabrics. In conclusion, this method was considered to be effective in fabricating multifunctional, stable, and durable fabrics.

Preparation and application of superhydrophobic polypropylene melt-blown nonwovens by organic solvent etch

Tianyi Ma,Le Gan,Yang Liu,Shinan Xu,Chenlong Han,Xiaolin Zhao,Xiaobei Zang,Ning Cao

Since the global outbreak of COVID-19, medical masks have become one of the most concerned pieces of epidemiological protection equipment. Polypropylene melt-blown nonwovens are the core filtration materials of medical masks, but the filtration performance deteriorates drastically with prolonged use and water vapor adherence. Here, a series of organic solvents were used to etch the melt-blown nonwovens to construct a graded rough structure and thus obtain durable superhydrophobic melt-blown nonwovens. The melt-blown nonwovens etched with a mixture of cyclohexane and n-hexane (volume ratio: 3:2) at 65 °C for 30 min exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle ∼153.5°, sliding angle ∼5.9°), high durability and great chemical resistance. The mechanical strength of the superhydrophobic melt-blown nonwoven has changed very little compared to the original melt- blown nonwoven, and it has a good filtration efficiency (89.2 %) and low wind resistance (24.3 Pa). In addition, the superhydrophobic melt-blown nonwoven can achieve more than 8.5 times its previous mass of organic solvent adsorption, with oil and water separation efficiency reaching over 91 %. Therefore, the PP melt-blowns prepared by the organic solvent etching method have greatly improved mask filtration performance and they also have great application prospect in oil-water separation.

Preparation of highly stable ZnO/MOFs/polypropylene non-woven catalytic thin films by chitosan modification for organic wastewater treatment

Ziyang Zhang,Haoshuo Li,Jianguo Yuan,Shouwu Yu,Shujuan Xiao

The catalyst loading onto polymer films by pump-filtration can effectively solve the problem of catalyst separation and recycling, as well as expose more catalytically active sites. However, this method suffers from the disadvantage of poor catalyst attachment stability, which reduces the ability to catalyze the degradation of pollutants. In this paper, the high adhesion and film-forming properties of chitosan (CS) were utilized to modify the ZnO/NH 2 -MIL-88B (ZM) catalyst-loaded polypropylene non-woven (PP) composite membranes obtained by filtration, and CS/[ZM@PP] catalytic membranes with excellent catalyst adhesion stability and catalytic degradation performance were prepared. The results showed that the prepared CS/[ZM@PP]-X catalytic membranes significantly improved the recovery of the catalysts and possessed good catalytic performance, and the best-performed CS/[ZM@PP]-3 membrane could degrade more than 96.8 % of methylene blue (100 mL, 20 mg/L) within 60 min. In this paper, the effects of different factors on the catalyst recovery on the catalytic membrane were systematically investigated, and the prepared CS/[ZM@PP]-3 membrane can adapt to the complex aqueous environment, has excellent cycling stability, and still has more than 90 % degradation effect after 6 times of recycling, which has good potential for practical application.
