Enhanced Performance for Treatment of Cr (VI)-Containing Wastewater by Microbial Fuel Cells with Natural Pyrrhotite-Coated Cathode

Junxian Shi,Wenyan Zhao,Chang Liu,Tao Jiang,Hongrui Ding

Here we reported the investigation of enhanced performance for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) by a new microbial fuel cell (MFC) with natural pyrrhotite-coated cathode. By comparisons of the graphite-cathode, the MFCs equipped with a pyrrhotite-coated cathode generated the maximum power density of 45.4 mW·m−2that was 1.3 times higher than that of with bare graphite cathode (35.5 mW·m−2). Moreover, the Cr (VI) removal efficiency of 97.5% achieved after 4.5 h compared with only 46.1% by graphite cathode MFC. In addition, Cr (VI) removal rate with different initial Cr (VI) concentrations for 10 mg/L and 30 mg/L was investigated and a decreased removal percentage with increasing Cr (VI) concentration was observed. Batches of experiments of different pH values from 3.0 to 9.0 in catholyte were carried out to optimize system performance. The complete Cr (VI) removal was achieved at pH 3.0 and 99.59% of Cr (VI) was removed after 10.5 h, which met the requirement of the Cr (VI) National Emission Standard. When the value of pH was decreasing, the removal rate was obviously increased and Cr (VI) could be removed successfully with a broad pH range indicating pyrrhotite-coated cathode MFC had more extensive usage scope. Furthermore, cathode treatment products were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Cr2O3, Cr (III)-acetate were detected on the cathode by the XPS Cr2p spectra and no Cr (VI) founded, indicating that the Cr on the surface of cathode was Cr (III) and Cr (VI) were reduced. On cathode, pyrrhotite not only played a significant role for catalyst of MFCs, but also acted as reactive sites for Cr (VI) reduction. Our research demonstrated that pyrrhotite, an earth-abundant and low-cost natural mineral was promised as an effective cathode material. Which had great potential applications in MFCs for reduction of wastewater containing heavy metals and other environmental contaminants in the future.

Exogenous electron transfer mediator enhancing gaseous toluene degradation in a microbial fuel cell: Performance and electron transfer mechanism

Han Chen,Yanan Yu,Yu Yu,Jiexu Ye,Shihan Zhang,Jianmeng Chen

Effective electron transfer (ET) between microorganisms and electrodes is essential for the toluene degradation and power generation in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). In this work, the neutral red, with excellent electrochemical reversibility and compatible redox potential as NADH/NAD + , was selected as electron mediator to boost the performance of the MFC. Experimental results revealed that, with the 0.5 μM neutral red, the removal efficiency and coulombic efficiency of the gaseous toluene powered MFC was increased by ~19% and ~400%, respectively. However, further increase in neutral red concentration resulted in a decreased in removal efficiency and coulombic efficiency, which was attributed by the toxicity of neutral red to the microbes. The microbial community analysis indicated that, with the dosage of the neutral red, the dominated bacteria shifted from Geobacter to Ignavibacteriales , resulting in a high coulombic efficiency. With the further increase in the neutral red, the amount of Ignavibacteriales gradually decreased and thus the coulombic efficiency declined at a high neutral red concentration. Based on the cyclic voltammetry analysis, an electron transport pathway involving neutral red, cytochromes , and OMCs in neutral red mediated MFC was proposed. Overall, the dosage of neutral not only enhanced the electron transfer but also induced the growth of the exoelectrogens, and thus significantly improve the MFC performance.

Boosting oxygen reduction and permeability properties of doped iron-porphyrin membrane cathode in microbial fuel cells

Meiying Yu,Qiao Yang,Xiaole Yuan,Yunfei Li,Xuepeng Chen,Yujie Feng,Jia Liu

To achieve a membrane cathode with excellent performance, iron-porphyrin (Fe(por)) was doped to boost the catalytic and permeability properties in microbial fuel cell (MFC). The membrane cathode with the optimal 0.05 g of Fe(por) (denoted as Fe(por)-0.05) had the highest current density of 10.3 A m −2 and the lowest charge transfer resistance of 12.6 ± 0.3 Ω. The ring-disk electrode (RDE) results further proved that the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) occurred on the Fe(por)-0.05 through a direct four-electron transfer pathway. Moreover, the membrane cathode performed better permeability properties under electric filed and the Fe(por)-0.05 + E (E was electric field) obtained the lowest flux attenuation ratio of 14.1 ± 0.2%, which was related to its superior hydrophilicity and strong electrostatic repulsion force. Iron-porphyrin can simultaneously enhance the ORR activity and permeability of membrane cathode, providing a new direction for the practical application in MFCs.

Recovery and separation of uranium in a microbial fuel cell using a titanium dioxide nanotube array cathode

Wenbin Liu,Leiming Lin,Ying Meng,Ziwang Zhao,Yahua Wang,Fubo Luan

Uranium is a common radionuclide contaminant in groundwater. Recovery of uranium from uranium-containing water can achieve the dual purposes of uranium remediation and uranium resource utilization. However, very few studies have successfully achieved this task. In this study, we developed a microbial fuel cell (MFC) system with a titanium dioxide nanotube array (TNTA) cathode, which could efficiently remove (over 95%) and recover (over 97%) uranium from uranium-containing water. Results demonstrated that the removal of U(VI) in the MFC was through an adsorption–reduction–deposition mechanism. U(VI) was adsorbed by the TNTA cathode, and the adsorbed U(VI) was further electroreduced to U(IV)O2 and deposited on the surface of the TNTA cathode. The reduction of adsorbed U(VI) initiated re-equilibration of the desorption reaction of adsorbed U(VI) and induced re-adsorption of U(VI). The re-adsorbed U(VI) could be further electroreduced to U(IV)O2, which resulted in the continuous removal of U(VI). Finally, 2.95 μmol U(VI) was reduced and deposited as U(IV)O2 on the surface of the TNTAs (1476.22 μmol m−2) without observing capacity saturation. Moreover, the deposited U(IV)O2 can be easily separated from the TNTA cathode with dilute nitric acid, and the TNTA cathode can be used repeatedly with stable performance.

CeO2 doped Pt/C as an efficient cathode catalyst for an air-cathode single-chamber microbial fuel cell

Ling Li,Mingkun Wang,Ning Cui,Yuedi Ding,Qingling Feng,Wenming Zhang,Xiaowei Li

Incorporation of nanophase ceria into the cathode catalyst Pt/C was used as alternative cathode catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in an air-cathode single-chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFC) for the first time. Electrochemical results reveal that the ceria doped Pt/C catalysts exhibited a higher catalytic performance than the pure Pt/C catalyst. The highest voltage of 580 mV and the maximum power density of 840 ± 24 mW m−2 were achieved from the 3 wt% CeO2 doped Pt/C cathode, which was larger than that of the pure Pt/C cathode.

Application of Graphene and Pyridine in Anode Modification for Enhanced Performance of Microbial Fuel Cells

Kun Cao

Carbon cloth was modified by graphene oxide, and then electropolymerized 2,6-Pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDC) on the treated carbon cloth, which was as anode for microbial fuel cells. The power density of the modified carbon cloth reaches 1035 mW·m -2 , which was 3.2 times larger than that of the MFCs with the unmodified carbon cloth anode. BET, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy were employed to detect the surface characteristics of the carbon cloth. CV and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to confirm the electrochemical characteristics. The results showed that graphene oxide and PDC could improve the charge transfer performance and bacterial reproduction.

Performance and application of microbial fuel cells with sodium alginate/agar/activated carbon composite as efficient biocompatible anode

Pengcheng Zhu,Shumin Zhuo,Weiying Zhang,Xiaoguang Ying,Jianying Huang,Xiao Li

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a potential biotechnology for simultaneous degradation of organic wastewater and power generation. In this paper, a biocompatible composite is constructed around a copper mesh with sodium alginate/agar and activated carbon (CM-SA/AC) and acts as an efficient anode for MFCs after being microbe immobilized. The power performance of the MFC with CM-SA/AC anode is investigated. The results show that the addition of activated carbon is conducive to the immobilization of bacteria on CM-SA/AC anode and fast start-up of MFCs. The power density reaches 1088.6 mW/m 2 , which is 2.03 times and 1.75 times that of CM-SA (without activated carbon) anode and carbon felt anode, respectively. In case of a candied wastewater treatment, the MFC with immobilized CM-SA/AC anode exhibits a much higher power density (724.5 mW/m 2 ) than that with carbon felt anode (145.0 mW/m 2 ), together with a longer stabilization time and a smaller charge-transfer resistance. The total removal rate of chemical oxygen demand (COD) reaches 79.4 ± 0.65%. The present study will facilitate the development of inexpensive and biocompatible anodes to facilitate the application of MFCs in wastewater treatment.

Promotion Mechanism of Atrazine Removal from Soil Microbial Fuel Cells by Semiconductor Minerals

Muyuan Tang,Yilun Sun,Xian Cao,Xiaoyi Jiang,Xintong Gao,Xianning Li

In recent years, soil microbial fuel cells (Soil-MFCs) have attracted attention due to their simultaneous electricity production and contaminant removal functions, but soil electron transfer resistance limits their contaminant removal effectiveness. To overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks, in this study, a dual-chamber Soil-MFC was constructed using atrazine (ATR) as the target contaminant, and the electrochemical performance of Soil-MFC and ATR removal were enhanced by semiconductor mineral addition. Analysis of atrazine was performed in soil using HPLC and GC-MS, and analysis of metallic minerals using XPS. Anodic microorganisms were determined using high-throughput sequencing technology. The results showed that the addition of Fe3O4increased the maximum output voltage of the device by 2.56 times, and the degradation efficiency of atrazine in the soil to 63.35%, while the addition of MnO2increased the internal resistance of the device and affected the current output, and these changes were closely related to the ion dissolution rate of the semiconductor minerals. In addition, the addition of both minerals significantly increased the relative abundance of both Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota, and Fe3O4simultaneously promoted the significant enrichment of Firmicutes, indicating that the semiconductor minerals significantly enhanced the enrichment of electroactive microorganisms near the anode. The structural equation modeling indicated that the semiconductor minerals achieved efficient degradation of ATR in the soil through a synergistic mechanism of metal ion leaching and microbial community structure changes. The detection of ATR and its degradation products in soil revealed that the degradation of ATR mainly included: (1) hydrolysis of atrazine by microorganisms to generate dehydroxylated atrazine (HYA); (2) reduced to diethyl atrazine (DEA) and diisopropyl atrazine (DIA) by extracellular electron reduction and re-dechlorination and hydrolysis to HYA. Semiconductor minerals make an important contribution to promoting microbial activity and extracellular electron reduction processes. The results of this study strengthen the power production and ATR removal efficiency of the Soil-MFC system and provide important theoretical support for the on-site removal of organic pollutants and the sustainable application of converting biomass energy into electricity. Keywords:soil microbial fuel cell;semiconductor mineral;atrazine;electron transfer

Improving EET kinetics and energy conversion efficiency of 3D hydrophilic composite hydrogel through 2D direction biofilm growth

Chi Zhang,Ye Chen,Qing Wen,Yang Yang,Desong Qiao,Linhan Zhong,Cen Bi

The limited power output of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) has impeded their widespread adoption application. Thoughtful selection of a suitable anode material not only enhances extracellular electron transfer (EET) efficiency but also stimulates microbial adhesion and proliferation. Herein, a three-dimensional conductive polymer hydrogel MXene/(polypyrrole)-(polyacrylamide) (MPP) is proposed, which can enhance the power generation performance of the bioanode by promoting the enrichment of microorganisms in the two-dimensional direction. The integration of hydrogel molecular chains within the layers of MXene effectively inhibits the self-aggregation of MXene layers, thereby facilitating the formation of ion transport channels for expedited charge storage. As a result, the maximum power density increases from 3.12 W/m 3 (CF) to 6.71 W/m 3 (MPP-25), the protein content of MPP-25 bioanode (59.66 ± 2.39 mg/cm 2 ) is 3.34 times higher than that of CF (17.85 ± 1.53 mg/cm 2 ), and the exchange current density value increases from 0.06 mA/cm 2 (CF) to 0.26 mA/cm 2 . Conductive hydrogels prepared by MXene as a modifier are a promising bioelectrocatalyst for high-performance MFCs.

Boosting microbial fuel cell performance with Co-Nx doped carbon nanotubes/graphene biomimetic anode composites

Qingwen Zheng,Zhuo Ma,Yunfeng Qiu,Zheng Zhang,Ruiwen Wang,Shaoqin Liu

Enhancing the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for sustainable energy generation requires innovative anode designs that facilitate efficient extracellular electron transfer (EET). This study presents a biomimetic approach to anode fabrication, developing a hierarchical Co-N x doped carbon nanotube/reduced graphene oxide (ZnCo/rGO@CC) composite inspired by the EET mechanisms of c-type cytochromes. The composite leverages the synergistic effects of Co-N x active sites, mimicking heme groups, and a three-dimensional porous structure to promote bacterial colonization and electron transfer. MFCs equipped with the ZnCo/rGO@CC anode achieved a maximum power density of 3.27 W/m 2 and a startup time of 1.68 days, significantly outperforming traditional carbon cloth anodes (1.49 W/m 2 and 2.50 days, respectively). Further demonstrating its potential for sustainable waste valorization, the MFC system was successfully operated using sugarcane bagasse as a fuel source, exhibiting a power density of 1.58 W/m 2 . Electrochemical analyses and microbial community characterization confirmed enhanced EET kinetics, selective enrichment of Geobacter (79.73 %), and robust biofilm formation on the ZnCo/rGO@CC anode. This biomimetic anode design, coupled with the utilization of sugarcane bagasse, offers a promising strategy for developing sustainable and efficient bioelectrochemical systems for cleaner energy production.

CW-MFC for Efficient Degradation of Ofloxacin-Containing Wastewater and Dynamic Analysis of Microbial Communities

Li Yanhong,Zhao Zikang,Zhao Yao,Tang Shen,Zhang Lihao,Zhang Jie,Peng Yuqing

The overuse of antibiotics poses critical threats to environmental and human health. This study developed a constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) system integrated with pre-acclimated Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 to enhance ofloxacin (OFL) removal from wastewater. The CW-MFC demonstrated exceptional removal efficiency (>96%) for OFL across tested concentration gradients, significantly outperforming conventional constructed wetlands (CW) in both antibiotic elimination and conventional pollutant reduction. Microbial community analysis revealed that S. oneidensis MR-1 inoculation enhanced microbial diversity under OFL stress while promoting enrichment of electroactive Firmicutes phylum members compared to non-inoculated systems. The synergistic integration of bioelectrochemical processes and microbial consortia modification in CW-MFCs effectively addressed antibiotic contamination challenges. These findings establish CW-MFC technology combined with electroactive bacteria acclimation as a sustainable solution for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment, providing critical insights for optimizing antibiotic removal strategies in engineered ecosystems.
