Hydrogel electrolytes have attracted enormous attention in flexible and safe supercapacitors. However, the interfacial contact problem between hydrogel electrolyte and electrodes, and the environmental instability are the key factors restricting the development of hydrogel-based supercapacitors. Here, a nucleotide-tackified adhesive organohydrogel electrolyte is successfully constructed and exhibits freezing resistance and water-holding ability based on the water/glycerol binary solvent system. Adenosine monophosphate enables the organohydrogels to possess outstanding adhesion and mechanical robustness. The robust adhesion can ensure close contact between the organohydrogel electrolyte and electrodes for constructing an all-in-one supercapacitor with low interfacial contact resistance. Impressively, the integrated organohydrogel-based supercapacitors display an areal specific capacitance of 163.6 mF cm −2 . Besides, the supercapacitors feature prominent environmental stability with capacitance retention of 90.6% after 5000 charging/discharging cycles at −20 °C. Furthermore, based on the strong interfacial adhesion, the supercapacitors present excellent electrochemical stability without delamination/displacement between electrolyte and electrodes even under severe deformations such as bending and twisting. It is anticipated that this work will provide an encouraging way for developing flexible energy storage devices with electrochemical stability and environmental adaptability.

Polydopamine (PDA) is well known as a mussel-inspired adhesive material composed of oligomeric heteropolymers. However, the conventional eumelanin-like structural assumption of PDA seems deficient in explaining its interfacial adhesion. To determine the decisive mechanism of PDA coating formation, experiments and simulations were performed in this study. 5,6-Dihydroxyindole (DHI), the signature building block of eumelanin, was introduced as the control group. Various typical building blocks in PDA were quantified by physicochemical characterizations, and the polar-group-dominated interfacial interaction was evaluated by classic molecular dynamics and metadynamics methods. Aminoethyl has been proven to be the key functional group inducing the adsorption of PDA on the hydroxylated silica substrates, while DHI shows limited adhesion to the substrate due to the absence of aminoethyl as the catechol-indole structure of DHI exhibits poor affinity to the silica surface. Pyrrole carboxylic acid, as an oxidative product detected from PDA/DHI, is unfavorable for its adhesion to silica substrates. Overall, the coating formation and self-aggregating precipitation of PDA are two competitive aminoethyl-consuming paths; thus, the in situ oxidative coupling of dopamine is indispensable for the PDA coating preparation. The collected PDA precipitates can no longer present satisfactory coating forming behavior, resulting from a shortage of aminoethyl moieties.

Soft electronics are rising electronic technologies towards applications spanning from healthcare monitoring to medical implants. However, poor adhesion strength and significant mechanical mismatches inevitably cause the interface failure of devices. Herein we report a self-adhesive conductive polymer that possesses low modulus (56.1-401.9 kPa), high stretchability (700%), high interfacial adhesion (lap-shear strength >1.2 MPa), and high conductivity (1-37 S/cm). The self-adhesive conductive polymer is fabricated by doping the poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) composite with a supramolecular solvent (β-cyclodextrin and citric acid). We demonstrated the solution process-based fabrication of self-adhesive conductive polymer-based electrodes for various soft devices, including alternating current electroluminescent devices, electromyography monitoring, and an integrated system for the visualization of electromyography signals during muscle training with an array of alternating current electroluminescent devices. The self-adhesive conductive polymer-based electronics show promising features to further develop wearable and comfortable bioelectronic devices with the physiological electric signals of the human body readable and displayable during daily activities.

Dynamic engineering of buckling deformation is of vital importance as it provides multiphase modulation of thin film devices. In particular, dynamic switch of buckles between one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) configurations in a single film system on rigid substrates is intriguing but very challenging. The current approach to changing buckling configuration is mainly achieved by varying the built-in stress at the film–substrate interface, but it is difficult to realize dynamic engineering on rigid substrates. Herein, we report a dynamic engineering of buckling deformation in MoS2 thin films by humidity-tuned interfacial adhesion. With the change of humidity, the MoS2 thin films deform from 1D telephone-cord buckles to 2D web-like buckles due to the hydrophilic nature of both MoS2 and substrate. Such 1D-to-2D evolution of buckles is attributed to the weakened interfacial adhesion of mixed deformation modes induced by humidity, which is verified by finite-element modeling. These buckled films further find potential applications as patterned templates for liquid condensation and sensing units for tactile sensors. Our work not only demonstrates the humidity-controlled dimensionality engineering of buckles in MoS2 thin films but also sheds light on the functional applications of buckled films based on their profile features.

This work highlights the potential of polypropylene (PP) as a power cable insulation material by blending with ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), as well as blends filled with magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles. In PP/UHMWPE blends, increasing the UHMWPE content up to 50 weight percentage (wt.%) increases the number of interfaces between PP and UHMWPE, promoting heterogeneous surface nucleation and strengthening the interfacial adhesion. This enhanced interfacial adhesion in PP/UHMWPE blends results in improved dielectric properties, particularly reduced relative permittivity, suppressed charge accumulation, and decreased dc electrical conductivity. In PP/UHMWPE/MgO nanocomposites, MgO nanoparticles are primarily observed at the interface between PP and UHMWPE in the PP phase. The presence of MgO does not function as a nucleating agent; instead, it acts as a compatibilizer, promoting the dispersion of UHMWPE and enhancing the interfacial adhesion between both polymers. The improved dispersion of UHMWPE results in the nonformation of phase co-continuity within the PP matrix; consequently, adding MgO up to 3 wt.% is insufficient to establish the interfaces forming percolating pathways. Thus, the good dispersion and compatibilizing effect of MgO between the PP and UHMWPE interfaces enhance interfacial adhesion and further improve the dielectric properties compared to the unfilled PP/UHMWPE blend counterparts.

Fiber-reinforced rubber composites (FRRC) are widely used in tires, hoses, conveyor belts and other fields. Currently, the industry heavily relies on the resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex (RFL) system to enhance interfacial adhesion performance of FRRC; however, both resorcinol (R) and formaldehyde (F) pose significant risks to human health and the environment. Thus, some two-step RF-free dipping systems have been developed to replace RFL system. Nevertheless, these complex two-step systems face challenges during industrialization. In this study, we proposed a novel one-step eco-friendly dipping system (PCGL) for polyamide66 (PA66)fibers. By using the new system, a solid transition bridge between PA66 fiber and rubber matrix can be formed, due to the bonding between PA66 and isocyanate, the interaction among polyacrylic acid resin, isocyanate and epoxy, the catalytic effect of triethanolamine, as well as the co-crosslinking of styrene-butadiene-vinyl-pyridine latex and rubber. The interfacial adhesion performance of PA66 fiber/rubber composites treated by PCGL with optimized ratio of epoxy groups/isocyanate groups can reach more than 90% of RFL level, meeting industry requirements for high interfacial bonding performance, while maintaining strength and safety of composites. The mechanism of largely enhanced interfacial adhesion was revealed through the analysis of modulus transition and co-crosslinking at the composite interface.

Although incorporating modified graphene oxide (GO) into base oil can significantly boost the lubrication properties, existing modification strategies inevitably introduce halogen ions that are harmful to the metal at the friction interface. In this work, long-alkyl chains are grafted onto the surface of GO through electrostatic interactions between GO and cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (CTAOH), improving the dispersion stability of GO in base oil. Subsequently, polyisobutylsuccinimide (PIBSI, T154) further is utilized to enhance the interfacial adhesion between CTAOH-GO and the tribological interface. The combination of surface modification of CTAOH and PIBSI dispersion greatly reduces the van der Waals forces between the CTAOH-GO nanosheets, resulting in the CTAOH-GO/T154 additive can be stably dispersed in 500 N base oil for more than 200 days. When the addition amount of GO is 0.075 wt% and the ratio of CTAOH-GO to T154 is 1:5, CTAOH-GO/T154 additive realizes the reduction of the average friction coefficient and the average wear scar diameter by 46.3 % and 30.6 % at 392 N, compared with pure 500 N base oil. Mechanism analysis exhibits that the excellent dispersion of CTAOH-GO/T154 and quick formation of tribo-film facilitate enhanced lubrication performance. Therefore, this work proposes an effective strategy to fabricate the GO-based additive for lubricating oil.

Various sizing agents were prepared to enhance the interfacial properties between aramid fiber (AF) and polycarbonate (PC), as well as to enhance the mechanical properties of AF/PC composites. It was found that PC sizing agent, P-GO sizing agent, and PSi-GO sizing agent effectively coated the surface of AF from the FTIR and XPS and SEM results. The IFSS and mechanical properties of composites reinforced with fibers treated by the sizing agents exhibited significant improvement, as well as their single fiber tensile strength also improved. Specifically, when AF was treated with PSi-GO sizing agent, the interfacial shear properties between AF and PC increased by a remarkable 78.69%, reaching 22.89 MPa compared to the original AF/PC composite, the tensile strength of the single-filament exhibited an increment of 12.4% to 26.4 cN/dtex. Moreover, the tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength of the composite increased by 5.43%, 77.74%, and 54.71%, respectively. These improvement can be attributed to the GO with a higher concentration of chemical groups and excellent dispersion with modified with the silane agent. These findings suggest that coating the AF with sizing agents can effectively enhance its interfacial adhesion with the matrix, which is useful for its application as the reinforcement in the composites. Highlights Adding GO to the sizing agent to change the Aramid fabric surface properties. Silane coupling agent was used to improve the dispersion of GO on the fiber surface. GO modified sizing agent can improve the flexural strength, tensile strength, and interlaminar shear strength of the composites.

Wood adhesives are mostly synthesized from unsustainable and hazardous petrochemical-based formaldehyde. Recently, an inorganic, sustainable and environmentally friendly aluminophosphate adhesive was developed for fabricating various wood-based panels. In order to increase its competitiveness, this study developed an approach for improving the interfacial adhesion of aluminophosphate. Hence, carboxymethyl cellulose was functionalized using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane to alter the chemical structures of the adhesive. Thereafter, a face-centered central composite design based on response surface methodology was employed to generate the optimum production conditions for the improved plywood interfaces. Adhesive concentration and hot-press temperature were seen as the significant factors within tested limits. The most appropriate production variables were suggested with a valid predictive model for such conditions. Also, the reaction mechanisms revealed the successful altering of the aluminophosphate properties with a well-uniform adhesive surface. The results indicate that modified adhesives are more thermally stable. Furthermore, the wet bonding strength of the modified adhesive was improved above the minimum threshold (Chinese type II standard ≥0.70 MPa). Therefore, the sustainable (i.e. continuous availability of CMC) approach adopted in this research could be considered as a viable method for improving the properties of aluminophosphate adhesives.

Tough adhesives with exceptional mechanical and adhesion properties under extreme conditions are essential for real application scenarios with extended service life. Nevertheless, these demands are rarely satisfied in most traditional polymeric adhesives, but spider silks have an unparalleled combination of toughness and adhesiveness at ultralow temperatures. Inspired by the spidroin's hierarchical structure and β-sheet nanocrystallites, a super-tough yet supercold-tolerant supramolecular adhesive is reported by incorporating spider-silk-like hierarchical hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) networks and dynamic nanosized physical cross-links into biobased polyamide elastomers. Such a structural design performs its own functions and the conflict among interfacial adhesion capacity, ductility, and low-temperature resistance can be thus overcome. The obtained adhesive possesses a reliable and long-term adhesion performance while maintaining a record-high toughness of 4052.4 N m−1 with favorable rebonding capability even in liquid nitrogen (−196 °C), far exceeding the adhesive toughness of reported polymeric adhesives in such environments. Moreover, high-density H-bonding-induced emission of the amide cluster leads to a strong blue fluorescence in the solid-like elastomer. This concept creates a new opportunity for designing tough elastic adhesives and offers promise for cold-resistant adhesive devices or anti-counterfeiting displays.

With the increasing demand for deep-sea exploration and underwater operations, the development of high-performance submersible fabrics has emerged as a critical focus within the field of functional textiles. In this study, the silane coupling agent KH550 was employed to modify the surface of hollow glass microspheres (HGM). A composite coating with waterproof and thermal insulation properties was fabricated on nylon fabric by laminating a waterborne polyurethane (WPU) matrix incorporating hollow glass microspheres (HGM) as thermally insulating fillers. The effects of surface modification of the HGM on properties of the composite coating were investigated. The results demonstrate that modification increased the thermal conductivity of the composite coating from 0.052 W/(m·K) to 0.065 W/(m·K) at a filler content of 20 wt%. This increase arises from strengthened interfacial adhesion between modified HGM and the WPU matrix, which reduces porosity within the coating. The water contact angle of the composite coating increased after modification, reaching 112.9° when the filler content was 20 wt%, which is 15.6° higher than that of the unmodified counterpart. This can be attributed to hydrophobic amino groups on the modified HGM surface and the formation of micro-nano rough structures. The flexibility of the composite coating was significantly enhanced after modification. The elongation at break reached 303% when the filler content was 20 wt%, which is 191.35% higher than that of the unmodified counterpart. This indicates that the interface optimization effectively delays the onset of brittle fracture. This approach not only expands the application of HGM as a thermal insulation filler, but also contributes significantly to improving diving suit materials.

To enhance the interfacial adhesion between the aramid fiber and PVC, a process involving deprotonation and a coating treatment inspired by mussels was used to modify the aramid fabric. The surface morphology and composition of the woven fabric were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The results confirmed that the aramid fiber surface underwent a satisfactory change. The fiber bundle pull-out test was conducted to confirm the rise in the fiber friction coefficient and the improvement in the interfacial strength. The findings indicated that the surface roughness of the fiber increased as a result of the thin microfibers along the axial direction of the fiber due to deprotonation. The first peak stress necessary to extract the yarn from the fabric experienced a substantial rise. The force needed to extract the aramid fiber bundle from the PVC matrix was enhanced by 109.3% when the fiber was deprotonated in the potassium hydroxide/dimethyl sulfoxide solution for a duration of 4 h. The deposition of the polyethylenimine layer maintained a high level of interface adhesion. Both the warp and weft filaments exhibit a pattern of initially dropping and subsequently increasing. When the processing period reaches 4 h, the tensile performance of the aramid fibers reverts back to a level that is similar to the beginning performance. The deprotonation and mussel-inspired coating treatment had a minor negative effect on the mechanical performance of aramid fibers.
