Enhanced oxidation resistance of CuCl@USY-MTMS composites through hydrophobic modification towards stable CO adsorption

Falong Shan,Jingru Dou,Yinghou Li,Yaqi Xu,Guanghui Chen,Pan Zhang,Fei Gao,Jipeng Dong

To address the challenge that Cu + active species in developed Cu + -based adsorbents tend to oxidize to Cu 2+ in humid air, thereby losing their adsorption performance for carbon monoxide, in this study, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) was employed as a hydrophobic modifier to modify the Cu + -based CO adsorbent. The hydrophobically modified Cu + -based CO adsorbent effectively shields the Cu + active species from water, thereby significantly inhibiting their oxidative deactivation. The successful grafting of MTMS onto the ultra-stable Y-type zeolite (USY) support was confirmed, thus markedly enhancing the hydrophobicity of the resulting Cu + -based CO adsorbent. The optimized adsorbent, CuCl(4)@USY-MTMS(24%), exhibits a high CO adsorption capacity of 2.61 mmol/g, coupled with high adsorption selectivity for CO/CO 2 and CO/N 2 . Moreover, the MTMS-modified hydrophobic CuCl(4)@USY-MTMS(24%) adsorbent exhibits significantly enhanced oxidation resistance compared to its unmodified counterpart, after aging in 70% relative humidity air for 24 h, it retains 79% of the CO adsorption capacity of pristine adsorbent, far exceeding the 47% retention of the unmodified version. This remarkable performance confirms that the hydrophobically modified adsorbent achieves stable CO separation.

Understanding the vacuum autoreduction behavior of Cu species in CuCl/NaY adsorbent for CO/N2 separation

Congli Li,Jiang Wang,Zhenfei Wang,Jinxiang Dong,Qi Shi

CuCl/NaY is the most representative π-complexation adsorbent, prepared by solid thermal dispersion followed by vacuum thermal activation. However, determining the autoreduction behavior of Cu species for CuCl/NaY adsorbent in vacuum thermal activation has rarely been researched. This study characterized the valence state, location, and types of Cu species during thermal dispersion and vacuum activation. During the thermal dispersion, Cu species were uniformly dispersed into NaY micropores. Under vacuum activation at 100 °C, the location of Cu species changed, migrating from supercages to near the plane (toward the sod cage or the supercage side) of the 6-membered ring connecting the supercage and sod cage. However, by activating at 150 °C, vacuum autoreduction occurred: (Cu 2+ –O − )Cl − species evolved into Cu + Cl − species. This was accompanied by the migration of Cu(I) species to the appropriate CO adsorption site on the plane center of the six-membered ring connecting the supercage and sod cage in the NaY framework, which achieved confined dispersion. The CO adsorption capacity of CuCl/NaY activated at 150 °C was 2.75 mmol/g, significantly higher than when activated at 100 °C. When activated at 200 °C, Cu(II) species was further reduced to Cu(I) slightly, which had not migrated to an effective adsorption site. Our results show the Cu species’ evolution and autoreduction behavior for CuCl/NaY adsorbent under vacuum thermal activation, and they can serve as a reference to guide the preparation of π-complex adsorbents.

Super-reversible CuCl cathode enabled by Cu2+-coordinated alginate and carbon composite film for chloride ion battery

Tingting Yu,Zhenyu Wei,Weihai Li,Junjie Liu,Yingchun Miao,Xin Liang

Research on clean energy materials represents a necessary response to the urgent global needs for sustainable development and environmental impact mitigation. Chloride-ion batteries (CIBs) with metal chlorides as cathodes have been widely noticed due to their high theoretical gravimetric energy density. However, the significant volume changes during charging and discharging, the poor electrical conductivity and the dissolution of metal chlorides limit the application of metal chloride electrodes. Herein, a Cu 2+ -coordinated sodium alginate (SA)/carbon (C) layer can be formed on the surface of cuprous chloride (CuCl) particles by treating the ball-milled composite of CuCl, SA, and carbon material with water first and then with ethanol. After water treatment, the trace quantity of basic cupric chloride (Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl) that is formed on the surface of CuCl particles facilitates the in-situ cross-linking with SA. Benefiting from the cross-linking of Cu²⁺ with SA and the chemical and hydrogen bonding between SA and graphene oxide (GO), the CuCl/SA-H₂O/GO cathode delivers a maximum initial discharge capacity of 248 mAh g⁻¹ (92 % of the theoretical capacity) at 100 mA g⁻¹ and retained a reversible capacity of 58 mAh g⁻¹ after 50 cycles.

Efficient conversion CuCl phase and improvement anti-corrosion performance of bronze via L-arginine: Performance and mechanism study

Zhaoyu Mao,Xiang Gao,Juan Qiu,Chunchao Chen,Kangwei Gongsun,Changming Bu,Qing Zang,Min Yu,Houyi Ma

A simple two-electrode system was utilized to fabricate a layer of CuCl on the surface of bronze for simulating the "bronze disease". The addition of L-arginine (Arg) reduced the conversion time of the CuCl patina in water from 6 h to 3 h and enhanced the protection efficiency of the transformed patina from 27.9 % to 81.8 %. The alkalinity of Arg and its coordination capacity with Cu 2 + facilitate the transformation of CuCl, modify the transformation mechanism, and alter the morphology and structure of the patina. The immersion experiment further substantiates the stability and self-reinforcing properties of the Arg-transformed patina.

Multifunctional Biomass-Based Ionic Liquids/CuCl-Catalyzed CO2-Promoted Hydration of Propargylic Alcohols: A Green Synthesis of α-Hydroxy Ketones

Ye Yuan,Siqi Zhang,Kang Duan,Yong Xu,Kaixuan Guo,Cheng Chen,Somboon Chaemchuen,Dongfeng Cao,Francis Verpoort

α-Hydroxy ketones are a class of vital organic skeletons that generally exist in a variety of natural products and high-value chemicals. However, the traditional synthetic route for their production involves toxic Hg salts and corrosive H2SO4as catalysts, resulting in harsh conditions and the undesired side reaction of Meyer–Schuster rearrangement. In this study, CO2-promoted hydration of propargylic alcohols was achieved for the synthesis of various α-hydroxy ketones. Notably, this process was catalyzed using an environmentally friendly and cost-effective biomass-based ionic liquids/CuCl system, which effectively eliminated the side reaction. The ionic liquids utilized in this system are derived from natural biomass materials, which exhibited recyclability and catalytic activity under 1 bar of CO2pressure without volatile organic solvents or additives. Evaluation of the green metrics revealed the superiority of this CuCl/ionic liquid system in terms of environmental sustainability. Further mechanistic investigation attributed the excellent performance to the ionic liquid component, which exhibited multifunctionality in activating substrates, CO2and the Cu component.

Facile Preparation of Cu(I)/5A via One-Step Impregnation with Highly Dispersed CuCl in Ethanol Single Solvent toward Selective Adsorption of CO from H2 Stream

Shuohan Yang,Yonghou Xiao,Wuyue Zhang,Yu Qiao,Qidong Zhao,Ning Zhang,Gaohong He

Cuprous ion-based zeolites have been proven as promising carbon monoxide (CO) adsorbents by virtue of their excellent adsorption and regeneration properties due to π complexation. However, existing preparation methods still suffer from the problems of a cumbersome process and low loading amounts of cuprous ions. Herein, we proposed a one-step synthesis strategy of using ethanol as a solvent to provide a reducing protective environment, which enabled the facile and controllable preparation of highly dispersed CuCl over 5A zeolites. Using CuCl as a copper source, to ensure the integrity of the 5A zeolite structure, CuCl species were directly loaded onto the 5A support in one step. Ethanol solution could effectively protect Cu(I) from being oxidized by oxygen in air and improve the stability of cuprous ions in Cu(I)/5A adsorbents. The results demonstrated that the Cu(I)/5A prepared by this method exhibited a superior CO adsorption performance to the pristine 5A zeolite. The adsorption capacity of CO over Cu(I)/5A attained 3.44 mmol·g–1 at 298 K and atmospheric pressure, which was evidently superior to those of CuY (2.7 mmol·g–1) and CuSAPO34 (1.84 mmol·g–1) reported in the literature, while the adsorption capacity of H2 was only 0.069 mmol·g–1 under the same condition. According to the ideal solution adsorption theoretical model, CO was preferentially adsorbed and the IAST selectivity of CO in the CO/H2 binary mixture over Cu(I)/5A was about 273.4. This study provides a novel and effective way to synthesize high-efficiency CO adsorbents.

Bimetallic PdCu anchored to 3D flower-like carbon material for portable and efficient detection of glyphosate

Yuhong Li,Yujun Cheng,Yutian Huang,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei,Yixi Xie

Glyphosate (Gly), as a widely used broad-spectrum herbicide, may lead to soil and water pollution due to its persistence in the environment. Herein, the co-reduction method was employed to anchor bimetallic PdCu onto the Ni and nitrogen-doped 3D Flower-like Carbon Materials (Ni@NC), creating a composite material (PdCu/Ni@NC) with high specific surface area and good catalytic performance. This composite was used to modify screen-printed electrodes (SPE) to develop a portable and efficient Gly detection platform. In the presence of Cl⁻, the copper active sites convert to CuCl, achieving signal amplification. Upon the addition of Gly, a competitive reaction between Cu and Gly converts CuCl into a Cu-Gly complex, resulting in a sharp decrease in the electrochemical signal. This signal drop is used to detect Gly. The bimetallic PdCu nanoparticles (NPs) endowed the sensing platform with better stability and electrochemical performance due to their synergistic effect, and their stability was simply verified by Density functional theory (DFT). The sensor demonstrates a linear detection range spanning from 1 × 10⁻¹ ³ to 1 × 10⁻⁵ M, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.72 × 10⁻¹ ⁴ M. The sensor demonstrated a recovery rate of 95.9 % to 104.5 % in actual samples such as water and soil, indicating its potential for practical application.

Preparation of CuHY catalyst via solid-state ion exchange method and its catalytic performance in isobutane/2-butene alkylation

Xinyan Sun,Xiang Zhang,Tao Zheng,Haiyan Liu,Rui Zhang,Xianghai Meng,Chunming Xu,Zhichang Liu

CuHY samples prepared by solid-state ion exchange of HY zeolite with CuCl were used as catalysts in isobutane/2-butene alkylation. The results show that both the addition amount of CuCl and the calcination temperature affect the ion exchange degree. Cu+ can be introduced into Y zeolite by replacing H+ in the HY zeolite after the solid-state ion exchange, causing a decrease of the amount of Brønsted acid sites and an increase of that of Lewis acid sites. When taking CuHY as the catalyst in isobutane/2-butene alkylation, the 3d104s0 valence electron configuration of Cu+ makes it favorable for inhibiting the oligomerization of 2-butene and accelerating the hydride transfer reaction rate by indirectly increasing the local isobutane/olefin ratio around the acid sites of the catalyst. As a result, the selectivity of C8 and trimethylpentanes over CuHY in alkylate are improved compared with those of HY.
