Super-hydrophobic Fe/TiO2 membrane prepared by dynamic etching of ferric salt (II) for efficient oil-water separation and photocatalytic removal of oil pollution

Chengxin Li,Weijie Wei,Lan He,Xinyu Qi,Jingjing He,Xiaqing Zhang,Xintong Han,Jiang Wang,Zhuwei Gao

In recent years, photo-responsive self-cleaning oil/water (O/W) separation materials for oil-containing wastewater have been widely used in the field of oily wastewater. Herein, in this paper, a petal-like superhydrophobic Fe/TiO 2 membrane was prepared using stainless steel reacted with dynamically eroded titanium dioxide microspheres in an acidic environment for efficient separation of oil and water and photocatalytic degradation of dyes in oil. The results showed that the membrane had excellent light absorption properties in the visible spectrum. The average oil-water separation efficiency of the Fe/TiO 2 membrane was 96.4 %, and the average oil flux was 16,221.88 L m −2  h −1 . Sudan III dye was photocatalytically degraded in the petal-like micro-nanostructures of anatase-type titanium dioxide, and the Fe/TiO 2 membrane possessed good self-cleaning function. In addition, the specially structured Fe/TiO 2 membrane also showed better separation efficiency and oil permeability after light exposure compared to natural conditions. These works can provide references for oil pollution treatment and environmental protection, which are of great significance.

Enhancement of water soluble PDI-NapSO3H on the photocatalytic performance of Fe-TiO2 under visible light

Jie Zhao,Yunning Chen,Renquan Guan,Xueying Cheng,Zhengkai Wu,Nana Zhao,Qingkun Shang,Yingnan Sun

In this paper, we successfully constructed two composite photocatalysts TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H and Fe-TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H by utilizing water-soluble PDI derivatives to bond with TiO 2 or iron-doped TiO 2 . Their photocatalytic performance to degrade phenol and diclofenac sodium (DCF) under visible light were investigated. The results show that PDI-NapSO 3 H can effectively improve the optical absorption properties of TiO 2 . Furthermore, the oxygen vacancy produced by doping of Fe in TiO 2 prevents the recombination of photogenerated carriers effectively. The larger conjugate plane of PDI-NapSO 3 H provides a convenient channel for the migration and separation of photogenerated carriers. Thus almost 99 % of phenol or DCF can be degraded by Fe-TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H within 90 or 120 min, respectively. However, the photocatalytic activity of Fe-TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H is better. The rate of phenol degradation is much higher than that of TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H. Further, through the photoelectric response characteristic analysis, radical trapping experiment and EPR test, the effects mechanism of the energy band structure, photogenerated carrier separation efficiency on the photocatalytic performance of Fe-TiO 2 @PDI-NapSO 3 H were discussed. In addition, the possible degradation pathways of DCF and the reasons for the obvious reduction of environmental toxicity after photocatalytic degradation were proposed.

MIL-101(Fe)@TiO2 nanotube composite material is used for the solid phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs under the synergy of multiple interactions

Hongmei Liu,Shihao Dang,Mingdeng Li,Baogui Ye

Increasing the adsorption sites and effective interactions between sorbents and the targets can improve the solid-phase extraction (SPE) efficiency. Herein, based on the advantages of MOFs and TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2 NTs), an MIL-101(Fe)@TiO2 NT composite was prepared and applied to extract non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from water samples coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Through characterization, it was established that MIL-101(Fe) was effectively composited on the surface and inside the TiO2 nanotubes, increasing effective adsorption sites. The obtained composite material well retains the structure and functional groups of the two original materials, and while retaining the original force with the target, it achieves a synergistic effect and produces more interactions with the target. Therefore, the extraction efficiency was greatly improved. The recovery efficiency reached 97.7–105.1% with an RSD of less than 6.71%, the detection limit was 0.1–0.2 μg L−1, and the linear range was 1–200 μg L−1 with a determination coefficient of 0.9972–0.9994. Owing to the stability of the two original materials, the composite material could be recycled and reused to extract NSAIDs up to 15 times without a loss of the recovery rate. Satisfactory results were obtained when it was used to extract NSAIDs from the Yellow River. These results indicate that the synthesized MIL-101(Fe)@TiO2 NT material is a promising sorbent to extract NSAIDs at trace concentrations with high efficiency and long lifetimes.

Ferromagnetic Fe-TiO2 spin catalysts for enhanced ammonia electrosynthesis

Wang Jingnan,Zhao Kaiheng,Yao Yongbin,Xue Fan,Lu Fei,Yan Wensheng,Yuan Fangli,Wang Xi

Magnetic field effects (MFE) of ferromagnetic spin electrocatalysts have attracted significant attention due to their potential to enhance catalytic activity under an external magnetic field. However, no ferromagnetic spin catalysts have demonstrated MFE in the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate for ammonia (NO 3 RR), a pioneering approach towards NH 3 production involving the conversion from diamagnetic NO 3 − to paramagnetic NO. Here, we report the ferromagnetic Fe-TiO 2 to investigate MFE on NO 3 RR. Fe-TiO 2 possesses a high density of atomically dispersed Fe sites and exhibits an intermediate-spin state, resulting in magnetic ordering through ferromagnetism. Assisted by a magnetic field, Fe-TiO 2 achieves a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of up to 97% and an NH 3 yield of 24.69 mg mg cat − 1 at −0.5 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Compared to conditions without an external magnetic field, the FE and NH 3 yield for Fe-TiO 2 under an external magnetic field is increased by ~21.8% and ~ 3.1 times, respectively. In-situ characterization and theoretical calculations show that spin polarization enhances the critical step of NO hydrogenation to NOH by optimizing electron transfer pathways between Fe and NO, significantly boosting NO 3 RR activity.

Ordered mesoporous Fe/TiO2 with light enhanced photo-Fenton activity

Zhenmin Xu,Ru Zheng,Yao Chen,Jian Zhu,Zhenfeng Bian

Ordered mesoporous Fe/TiO 2 was prepared by an evaporation-induced self-assembly method. The iron ions were in situ embedded in the pore wall of the TiO 2 framework. The catalyst has excellent light-assisted Fenton catalytic performance under UV and visible light irradiation. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy results showed that the TiO 2 samples have an ordered two-dimensional hexagonal pore structure and an anatase phase structure with high crystallinity . The ordered pore structure of the TiO 2 photocatalyst with a large specific surface area is beneficial to mass transfer and light harvesting. Furthermore, iron ions can be controlled by embedding them into the TiO 2 framework to prevent iron ion loss and inactivation. After five cycles, the reaction rate of the ordered mesoporous Fe/TiO 2 remained unchanged, indicating that the material has stable performance and broad application prospects for the purification of environmental pollutants .

Coating TiO2 with MIL-101(Fe) to decarboxylate D-Glu and D-MeAsp of microcystin-LR from HA-rich water: Diminishing the inhibitory effect of humic acids

Yarui Wang,Chengzhuo Yu,Sen Wang,Jin Xu,Fanglan Geng,Silong Wang,Jitao Lv,Lixia Zhao,Yawei Wang

Humic acids (HA) released during algal bloom poses a key challenge for efficient photocatalytic degradation of Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) due to their scavenging function on active species. Herein, MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 -P25 (M/P) was constructed to diminish the inhibitory effect of HA on the photocatalytic degradation of MC-LR. Results showed that MC-LR could be efficiently removed assigning to the photogenerated holes (h + ) and superoxide radical (O 2 •− ) oxidation under visible light irradiation, where the carboxy groups of D -glutamic acid (Glu) and methyl- D -aspartic acid (MeAsp), and Adda side chain related to MC-LR biotoxicity were selectively destroyed to achieve MC-LR detoxication. More importantly, HA exerted non-inhibitory effect on MC-LR removal by M/P. The counteracting mechanisms were studied. Firstly, the location of TiO 2 in the pore structure of MIL-101(Fe) could occupy the adsorption sites of HA, and decrease the HA adsorption on M/P. Furthermore, XPS analyses suggested the coordination of unsaturated Fe metal sites on the surface of M/P hybrids complexed with –OH and –COOH of HA, which could accelerate the electron transfer and reduce hole consumption. Thus, the inhibitory effect of HA was alleviated during photocatalytic MC-LR treatment. This work offers a possible way to remove MC-LR in an abundant HA matrix water system efficiently.

PVP-Assisted Synthesis of Fe-TiO2 for Efficient Tetracycline Degradation via Peroxymonosulfate Activation

Xin Wang,Longxue Yu,Shuo Wang,Lingyun Xue,Yi Liu,Zhuhui Qiao,Xunyong Liu

Tetracycline (TC) is chemically stable and recalcitrant to natural degradation. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes offer an effective removal strategy, the efficacy of which relies on high-performance heterogeneous catalysts. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an ideal material due to its stability and environmental compatibility, yet its practical application is hindered by inadequate PMS activation capacity, particle agglomeration, and difficult recovery. To address these limitations, a heterogeneous Fe/TiO2catalyst was constructed via Fe3+doping, innovatively utilizing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a structure-directing agent. PVP’s steric hindrance effectively suppressed nanoparticle agglomeration and enabled high dispersion of Fe active sites, simultaneously enhancing catalytic activity and stability. Under optimized conditions, the Fe/TiO2/PMS system achieved 94.3% TC degradation, following pseudo-first-order kinetics and significantly outperforming pure TiO2used in this experimental system. Radical quenching verified sulfate radicals (SO4•−) as the dominant species. The catalyst demonstrated excellent recyclability, retaining over 80% degradation efficiency after six cycles and enabling convenient magnetic separation. Moreover, in complex water matrices (tap water and seawater), it sustained high removal efficiency (>90% initially, >70% after six cycles), highlighting its superior anti-interference capability and practical potential. This work offers a strategic material design strategy for efficient and robust TC removal in challenging water environments.

Photocatalytic semi-flexible pavement for NO removal to alleviate urban automobile emissions pollution

Hang Diao,Bo Peng,Wenjing Kuang,Tianqing Ling,Ying Gao,Kaiyuan Luo

The escalating urban air pollution caused by vehicular nitrogen oxides (NO x ) necessitates sustainable solutions. Solar-driven photocatalytic NO removal represents a green approach, yet challenges remain in developing cost-effective photocatalysts with high removal efficiency. This study through the Fe-TiO 2 combined with thermal polycondensation method with g-C 3 N 4 build heterojunction generated Fe-TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst, in order to improve its NO catalytic efficiency. The optimized photocatalyst achieves a single-cycle NO removal rate of 52.3 %, demonstrating the 10.7 % improvement compared to pure TiO 2 . Following five cycles, the decay rate is only 5.52 %, which is significantly lower than the 12.45 % of TiO 2 , thus indicating superior long-term stability. Microscopic characterization shows that Fe can induce the generation of oxygen defects inside TiO 2 to promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs; and induce the formation of a built-in electric field to enhance the separation of photogenerated charges with the heterojunction formed by the construction of g-C 3 N 4 . Moreover, the designed photocatalytic semi-flexible pavement incorporating this photocatalyst exhibits 65.33 % NO removal efficiency per cycle, 10.95 % higher than traditional TiO 2 based systems, with a total decay rate of 1.71 % after five cycles. Additionally, the pavement demonstrates excellent mechanical properties, including fivefold higher rutting resistance than conventional asphalt pavements. This study provides a new sustainable pavement removal scheme for mitigating urban exhaust agglomeration pollution.

A novel magnetic MIL-101(Fe)/TiO2 composite for photo degradation of tetracycline under solar light

Lei He,Yanan Dong,Yane Zheng,Qingming Jia,Shaoyun Shan,Yaqin Zhang

A novel magnetic MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 composite was synthesized for photo degradation of tetracycline (TC) under solar light. The composite was characterized by XRD, TGA, SEM, TEM, EDS, BET, FTIR, XPS, VSM, ESR, and PL. The resultant composite was environment friendly material, which exhibited high TC degradation efficiency and excellent reusability. In the meantime, it could be separated easily from TC solution by using magnet, which would save significant time and cost of preparation and degradation, having broad prospect in application. Using 1 g L −1 magnetic MIL-101(Fe)/TiO 2 at pH = 7, 92.76% degradation efficiency was achieved under solar light irradiation in 10 min for 20 mg L −1 TC. Further experiments indicated that TiO 2 introduced in the composite played an important role in the degradation process, which could be activated by the UV light in solar light to generate large amount of O 2 − and OH radicals. The degradation efficiency of TC in this paper was significantly higher than other research papers reported in last three years. This study put forward new magnetic Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/TiO 2 composite for degrading pharmaceutical wastewater.

Catalytic Reduction of SO2 with CO Over Fe/TiO2 Catalysts: Effect of Pre-sulfurization and Plasma

Yao Liang,Wang Hao,Li Shuangde,Chen Yunfa

Sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emissions, a major source of air pollution, can be effectively mitigated through catalytic reduction to elemental sulfur using carbon monoxide (CO). In this study, Fe loaded TiO 2 catalysts were synthesized and subsequently subjected to pre-sulfurization treatment under varied conditions. Their catalytic performance was evaluated in SO 2 reduction for thermal and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma enhanced thermal catalysis. The results showed that OFS-Fe/TiO 2 catalyst with oxygen-free sulfurization (OFS) treatment exhibited the highest catalytic activity, achieving above 90% SO 2 conversion between 250 and 550 °C under oxygen-assisted reaction (OAR), along with long-term stability under 40–60% water vapor. However, the SO 2 conversion were below 20% for Fe/TiO 2 and oxygen-assisted sulfurization OAS-Fe/TiO 2 catalysts within 250 to 400 °C. Notably, the significantly enhanced catalytic performance of the OFS-Fe/TiO 2 catalyst was probably attributed to the high dispersion of Fe over nano-TiO 2 , the lower Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ ratio, and the formation of active FeS 2 species detected by SEM-EDS, XPS and TPD techniques. Furethermore, a conversion efficiency exceeding 90% was maintained throughout 80 to 550 °C under DBD plasma reaction over POFS-Fe/TiO 2 catalyst with room-temperature DBD plasma oxygen-free sulfurization treatment, surpassing thermal catalysis performance. The significantly enhanced low-temperature activity of plasma catalysis was attributed to the lowest Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ ratio, together with the transformation of FeS 2 into FeS, generating more sulfur vacancies. In-situ DRIFTS experiments confirmed two distinct SO 2 adsorption and reduction mechanisms between Fe/TiO 2 and OFS-Fe/TiO 2 catalysts. The results demonstrate that pre-sulfurization and plasma modification serve as an effective catalytic strategy to enhance CO-mediated SO 2 reduction, offering a sustainable emission control approach through sulfur resource utilization. Tribological Properties and Thermal Stability of Fe/TiO2-Reinforced Ni Base Composite Coatings Fabricated Using Pulse Electrodeposition

Xu Xiaobin,Gao Qiang,Ma Yue,Dong Chengwei,Ye Bing,Zhou Fei

M142 aluminum alloy, commonly used in piston systems, exhibits inadequate performance under prolonged high-temperature and high-load conditions. This study developed a TiO 2 nanoparticle-reinforced Ni-Fe composite coating via electrodeposition to address this. The effect of FeSO 4 ·7H 2 O concentration on Ni-Fe coatings was first investigated. The results show that hardness increased with FeSO 4 ·7H 2 O concentration, while the wear rate initially decreased and then increased. Adding TiO 2 nanoparticles effectively mitigated the adverse effects of high Fe content, leading to a dense, homogeneous composite structure (NFT15). Compared to the NF25 coating, the TiO 2 -reinforced coating demonstrated a 19.5% increase in hardness, a 30% improvement in adhesion strength, and a 30.9% decrease in wear rate. It also exhibited superior thermal stability, maintaining structural integrity and showing a 41.7% hardness increase after thermal cycling. Finally, a multi-performance evaluation identified the composite coating with 15 g L −1 TiO 2 as possessing the optimal overall properties.

Synthesis of Low-Carbon Alcohols from Syngas over Cu–Fe/TiO2 Catalysts with an Anatase–Rutile Junction

Ziguang Zhou,Yang Zhang,Jungang Wang,Bo Hou,Riguang Zhang,Lixia Ling,Debao Li,Baojun Wang

The use of anatase–rutile mixed-phase TiO2 (P25) as a support improves both CO conversion and selectivity toward low-carbon alcohols (C1–C5 mixed alcohols) during syngas conversion over Cu–Fe bimetallic catalysts. A 61.4% selectivity to low-carbon alcohols was obtained at a CO conversion of 35.0%. The low-carbon alcohol yield (21.5%) over CuFe/P25 is 31 and 3 times higher than the yields over Cu–Fe catalysts supported on pure anatase TiO2 and pure rutile TiO2, respectively. The anatase–rutile synergy in P25 contributes to the high dispersion of Cu–Fe species and facilitates electron transfer from the P25 support to both Cu0 and FeCx active sites via metal–support interaction. CuFe/P25 enhances both the capabilities of CO adsorption, dissociation, and non-dissociative insertion and the formation of CHx, CHO, and HCOO intermediates. These findings suggest that tuning the crystalline phase of the support constitutes a rational strategy for enhancing the catalytic activity of the metal sites.
