Oily water pollution has become one of the most serious water environment issue in worldwide. Membrane that can effectively and efficiently remove different oil pollutions from the complex water environment is still urgently needed. Herein, a Janus membrane with opposite wettability that can separate heavy oil–water and light oil–water mixtures on demand was prepared by using a simple sequential electrospinning and chemical crosslinking method. The membrane could remove oil or water under gravity with a high oil/water flux and excellent separation efficiency. Moreover, the membrane could separate different kinds of oil-in-water emulsions under gravity with a high flux of 1184 L m −2 h −1 and a tiny flux loss of 4.4% after a 10-cycle separation. Owing to its excellent anti-pollution properties the flux recovery rate of the membrane was still higher than 80% after 150 min of emulsion separation. Additionally, the membrane also displayed the ability to transport liquid unidirectionally, giving whom the capabilities to collect oil underwater or water underoil. This research provides a novel and simple method for producing membranes for a variety of separation applications. Graphical

Solar-energy thermal management, characterized by its environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency, holds a promising future, which has brought about widespread interest in the evolution of solar-to-thermal materials with the desired properties. Nevertheless, in both hot and cold environments, challenges in developing functionally integrated hydrogels for sustainable thermal regulation still remain. In this study, a rationally, simply, and effectively designed structured Janus membrane, consisting of a Ti3C2Tx MXene/GO/alginate fibers nonwoven (GMF) layer and a P (NIPAM co-DMAA) (PAD) hydrogel layer. The GMF with excellent hydrophilicity forms an interpenetrating structure with the PAD hydrogel through strong hydrogen bonds and can be easily adapted to multishape and multifield applications. By adjusting the content of thermochromic PAD hydrogel monomers, an improvement in the critical transition temperature (37.7 °C) and a reduction in volume shrinkage has been achieved, and the full-spectrum intrinsic transmittance is 67.59%, which is of excellent practicability and cyclic stability. Under constant sunlight, the hydrogel’s phase transition decelerates the temperature increment in the photothermal layer, thereby establishing a stable equilibrium temperature in the environment. The equilibrium temperature of the photothermal layer can be adjusted between 32 and 36 °C to match a variety of climates by regulating the relative content of the Ti3C2Tx MXene and GO in the photothermal layer. Additionally, the existence of the thermochromic hydrogel in the Janus membrane prevents the indoor temperature from overheating. Furthermore, the membrane’s asymmetric structure enhances its ability to reduce heat dissipation, crucial for high-performance thermal management. Moreover, this novel structure can be used as a self-supporting agricultural film to maintain a stable temperature in the environment for efficient plant growth, demonstrating significant potential in new modern agriculture.

The asymmetric wettability of Janus membranes shows promising prospects in the field of liquid transport and separation, and researchers are seeking environmentally friendly and cost-effective feedstock for fabricating these membranes. In this study, we developed two types of high-performance, flexible, and durable asymmetric Janus membranes from wood: Janus cross-section wood membrane (JCW) and Janus longitudinal-section wood membrane (JLW). Wood, being an anisotropic material stemming from its grain orientation, possesses a hierarchical porous structure that can be tailored for various practical applications. The JCW, characterized by its vertical wood channel structure and larger pore size, demonstrated superior unidirectional water transport and fog collection capabilities. Its water–oil separation efficiency reached 99.9%, with a filtration flux exceeded 3000 L/m 2 ∙h. The JLW, featuring three-dimensional interconnected micro-nano channels and layered pathways, was particularly effective in separating oil–water emulsions. The separation efficiency of oil–water emulsions reached 99.91%, with filtration fluxes for water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions being as high as 500 and 700 L/m 2 ∙h, respectively. These results underscored the potential of asymmetric wettability Janus membranes in the fields of liquid transport and separation, while also paving the way for the utilization of sustainable and eco-friendly feedstocks.

Membrane separation technology is effective for treating oily wastewater but is limited by the lack of membranes that are both highly permeable and fouling-resistant. Janus membranes , with asymmetric wettability and electrostatic repulsion of charged oil droplets , offer a potential strategy for oil-water separation. This study developed novel electrically enhanced conductive Janus membranes using metal-modified organic membranes to achieve high-efficiency treatment. Conductive metal Janus membranes were fabricated using a straightforward two-step method involving simple electroless nickel plating and surface peeling. The resulting nickel-coated surface of the membrane demonstrated extreme hydrophilicity , underwater oleophobicity, and excellent conductivity (approximately 4.7 Ω). Fascinatingly, the developed membranes exhibited a “water diode” effect, facilitating unidirectional liquid transport without external pressure. Gravity-driven oil-water separation achieved a flux rate of 4874 L m −2 h −1 and over 99 % oil removal efficiency, surpassing most existing studies. During electro-filtration of oil-water emulsions, the conductive Janus membrane as a cathode generated electrostatic repulsion, preventing emulsified oil droplet adhesion. Applying an external voltage increased the flux by approximately 13 times and oil removal efficiency to 99.6 %. The membrane's separation capability remained consistent across six cycle tests, demonstrating robust stability. As all, this work first synthesized conductive “water diode” Janus membranes with high oil-water separation efficiency, offering fresh perspectives on the design and fabrication of Janus membranes as well as on the processes for treating oily wastewater.

With growing interest in hydrogen energy, liquid ammonia has emerged as a promising hydrogen carrier due to its low boiling point and high volumetric energy density. In addition to green and brown ammonia, white ammonia, produced through waste recycling, has gained attention. This study explored the use of a Janus membrane in a membrane contactor system for white ammonia recovery from high-strength wastewater, such as anaerobic digestion effluent, which is prone to membrane fouling owing to its complex organic and inorganic constituents. To address the challenge, a Janus membrane with asymmetric wettability, combining a hydrophilic surface and a superhydrophobic layer, was used to enhance interfacial stability and ammonia transport. The Janus membrane achieved a mass transfer coefficient (MTC) of 0.039 m/h, which was 8.3 % higher than that of the SHPO-only membrane and exhibited only a 5.13 % MTC reduction after extended fouling, compared to a 20.93 % reduction for the virgin membrane. Postoperative Fourier transform-infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses confirmed the chemical integrity of both layers, and scanning electron microscopy imaging revealed limited surface deposition. In addition, the Janus configuration enabled directional vapor flow and reduced interfacial mass transfer resistance compared with symmetric membranes. The findings demonstrate that the Janus membrane provides a robust and scalable platform for stable ammonia separation in the presence of severe fouling and complex wastewater matrices.

Hypothesis With varied affinities for distinct liquids, liquid/solid interfaces can exhibit different stability against external liquids. For liquid-infused Janus membranes with different surface chemistry, there may be significant osmotic pressure gradients across the membrane, facilitating liquid gating of various liquids in diverse systems. Such strategy may highly widen the application areas of liquid gating technology. Experiments Liquid-infused Janus membranes were prepared via the combination of hydroxyapatite (amphiphilic but more water-loving) on one side and 3-(dodecylamino) propane-1-sulfonic acid (amphiphilic but more oil-loving) on the other side and subsequent infusion of various liquids (water or oils). The gating property of them was studied for all the conditions and the application potential in various areas including medical and micro-reaction was also explored. Findings After being infused with certain liquids (i.e., water or oils), the obtained membranes displaying opposite affinity toward water and oils can universally gate immiscible liquids at a high rectification ratio in air and in liquids. The interfacial instability of liquid films on the reverse sides was found to be critical in the achievement of liquid gating. Moreover, such gating property is also applicable in the transportation of various soluble substances (ions and drugs) and facilitating the dislodgement of blood.

With the asymmetric wettability of the membrane due to its unique transmission features and functions, the application of oil-water separation achieved rapid development. Nevertheless, their practical application is severely restricted due to poor mechanical durability and low flux in the absence of external pressure. Herein, the Janus ZIF-8/stainless steel mesh/polydopamine (DZIF-8/SSM/PDA) membrane was successfully prepared using electrodeposition , in-situ growth, and shell ligand exchange reaction methods. The Janus membrane surface was created through the combination of 5, 6-dimethylbenzimidazole (DMBIM) modified superhydrophobic nanoparticles ZIF-8 (DZIF), and PDA, exhibiting underwater superoleophobicity (UWOCA 156°), superhydrophobicity (WCA 154°), and excellent anti-oil (light and heavy oil) pollutants ability. By manipulating the molecular repulsion forces on the Janus membrane surface , a stable interfacial hydration layer is created in conjunction with the micro-nano structure. This combination enables the achievement of interfacial demulsification and gravity-driven separation of emulsified oil, according to the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation process. The water-in-oil emulsion achieved an oil flux of 601 L m −2 h −1 with a separation efficiency of 99.1 %, while the oil-in-water emulsion demonstrated a water flux of 62 L m −2 h −1 with a separation efficiency of 99.7 %. The Janus DZIF-8/SSM/PDA demonstrated acid and alkali resistance, mechanical stability and reusability , and resistance to E. coli bacteria. Overall, this research anticipates advancing the production of durable asymmetric Janus membranes with superior separation efficiency under gravity, providing a novel solution for oil-water separation.

A membrane as a selective barrier of mass transfer is of great importance for applications in analysis, environment, energy, and biology. Unidirectional solute transfer that would improve membrane process flow is a challenge. Here, macroscopic extreme wettability of membranes controlling microscopic solute transfer is presented. A Janus membrane is prepared by integrating underoil superhydrophobic (UOSH) and underwater superoleophobic (UWSO) surfaces. Without or with electric field, solutes pass through the Janus membrane from the UOSH side to the UWSO side, but are impeded from penetrating in the reverse direction. The UWSO surface has a high affinity toward solutes in water compared to the UOSH surface at their interface. The composite membrane realizes unidirectional solute transfer, which can be considered as a solute transfer diode. This study may promote the understanding of the correlation between macroscopic and microscopic interfacial behaviors and facilitate the design of interfacial materials for controllable solute transfer and separation.

Oil/water emulsion wastewater is a typical industrial and domestic wastewater that is harmful to human health and the environment. However, it is still challenging to fabricate membrane materials for separating complex surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions from biomass in a facile and sustainable approach. Herein, paper industry waste lignin was prepared by self-assembly and hydrophobization into modified lignin nanospheres, which were sprayed onto delignified wood to develop a lignin-wood Janus membrane with superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces. The prepared Janus wood (JW) membrane maintains its selective wettability even under harsh conditions, demonstrating excellent durability and stability. Moreover, it can efficiently separate surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions on demand, with a separation efficiency of >99 %. It is due to the distinct wettability and hierarchical structure of JW membranes, which feature three-dimensional interconnected layered micro/nano channels (tracheids and vessels) that enable multiple and continuous separation of oil/water emulsions. In addition, the JW membrane maintains a stable and efficient oil/water emulsion separation efficiency after 10 cycles, which offers an efficient, cost-effective, sustainable, and scalable approach for applications of all-wood-based separators in the oily wastewater treatment field.

Membrane distillation (MD) technology encounters problems such as membrane scaling, membrane wetting, and fouling during the reprocessing of diverse wastewater types. Janus membranes are anticipated to hold significant potential in addressing these issues. The metal-polyphenol network (MPN) was employed to mediate the catalytic self-cleaning ability of the intermediate mineralization layer as well as the PA-layered Janus membranes generated on the surface through the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. It was revealed that the pure water flux of the pristine PVDF membrane was 44.9 LMH, while that of the Janus membrane was 41.8 LMH. The PA layer of the Janus membrane is conducive to the increase of flux because of its hydrophilicity. However, excessive nanoparticles can block the membrane pores, and thus it compensates for part of the decreased flux to a certain extent. During the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) experiment, Janus membrane demonstrated superior performance in comparison to the PVDF membrane in the treatment of oily wastewater, saline solutions of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), and gypsum-induced fouling. The mineralization layer based on manganese oxide can ensures higher stability of Janus membranes during cycling through in situ catalytic self-cleaning when dealing with the organic pollutant humic acid (HA). Overall, this study offers a novel and potential MD membrane.

Inspired by the capillary effect in nature (such as water transport in soils) and droplet-drive performance of Nepenthes, a new driving strategy for emulsion separation membrane based on the synergistic effect of capillary force and progressive wettability-induction force was proposed. It is prepared by a one-step, simple continuous, electrospinning process. By adjusting solutions and spinning parameters, the membrane obtains its capillary structure and progressive oleophilicity in one-step preparation. Attractively, the membrane shows separation efficiency and excellent permeability, with a flux of 384801 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 for the oil-water mixture, and the little water content of less than 18 ppm. And for emulsions, the flux even reaches 50000 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 and the separation efficiency reaches 99.95%. Furthermore, the membrane has excellent mechanical-stability: at 80 kPa transmembrane pressure, it can still effectively prevent water's penetration. Drawing inspiration from nature, the incorporation of capillary force and progressive wettability-induction force into the separation membrane as an additional dual emulsion separation driving force proves to be a highly effective and versatile approach. This method provides a way to solve the general flux-efficiency balance problem of oil-water separation and also provides a new strategy for the preparation of separation membranes for various purposes.

Solar-driven evaporators have emerged as a sustainable strategy for water purification and energy harvesting. Designing advanced systems that achieve high evaporation performance, long-term operational stability, and resistance to salt crystallization remains a significant challenge. In this study, an innovative Janus membrane is proposed that addresses these challenges, featuring a super hydrophilic cellulose nanofiber (CNF)@Hexadecyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB)-MXene layer and a superhydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) layer. CTAB modification of MXene enhances its interlayer spacing and specific surface area, enabling rapid water transport and efficient solar energy absorption of the CNF@CTAB-MXene layer. A PTFE layer is sputter-deposited onto CNF@CTAB-MXene layer, effectively preventing salt accumulation and membrane fouling, with plasma pre-treatment ensuring excellent interfacial bonding between these two layers. Under 1 sun illumination, the CNF@CTAB-MXene/PTFE Janus evaporator achieves a remarkable evaporation rate of 1.51 kg m −2 h −1 with outstanding salt resistance. The synergy between superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic layers facilitates efficient water transport while maintaining long-term stability without performance degradation. Additionally, the evaporator generates a voltage of 343.8 mV during thermoelectric power generation, and its unique design allows electricity generation from wind energy at night. This integrated system provides an advanced and durable solution for water-power co-generation, offering practical benefits for off-grid or remote regions.
