Systematic investigation of the LSPR characteristics in plasmonic nanoarrays

Zhao Xing,Zhu Xiangnan,Chen Dexiang,Wei Yunjia,Yao Lei,Li Weiyi,Li Guoqun,Sun Zixuan,Zhao Yixin,Fan Xingce,Qiu Teng,Hao Qi

For plasmonic materials, it is crucial to modulate and couple their localized surface-plasmon resonances (LSPRs) frequencies with the incident laser to generate resonant electromagnetic fields. While the LSPR properties of colloidal plasmonic particles are well-established, the distinct morphology and LSPR behaviors of plasmonic nanoarrays fabricated by template-assisted evaporation remain insufficiently explored. This study systematically investigates the effects of particle diameter, deposition thickness, and surface roughness on the LSPR characteristics of nanoarrays. Furthermore, we demonstrate precise tuning of LSPRs through adjustments to the dielectric medium and composition in multilayer nanoparticles, as well as polarization dependence of anisotropic nanoparticles. Several critical, yet often overlooked, aspects were identified: (1) Physically deposited nanoparticles exhibit non-spherical morphologies, leading to LSPR characteristics that are distinct from those of idealized spheres. (2) Out-of-plane geometry strongly influences the LSPR response; notably, increasing the particle thickness can induce an LSPR blueshift, contrary to conventional expectations. (3) The dielectric environment plays a decisive role in governing the LSPRs of nanoarrays, including contributions from both the dielectric substrate and the surrounding medium. Moreover, we also demonstrate the capability of AAO-templated nanoarrays for plasmonic refractive index sensing, revealing a red shift of the LSPR peak with increasing refractive index and enhanced sensitivity for larger particle diameters. These findings provide insight into LSPR behaviors in nanoarrays and establish strategies for precise plasmonic tuning, deploying in LSPR sensing applications. GNRs/Ti3C2 MXene improved optical fiber LSPR acetylcholine biosensors

Yumei Zhang,Baoquan Xiao,Zelin Gao,Li Yang,Dekui Zhang,Ning Wang,Tuanjie Che,Xusheng Xia,Liyun Ding

The rapid, accurate and highly sensitive detection of acetylcholine, which was one of the neurotransmitters related to a variety of neurodegenerative diseases has great significance for disease screening, treatment and prognosis. This paper proposed a GNRs/Ti 3 C 2 MXene enhanced optical fiber LSPR acetylcholine biosensor by depositing Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets on the surface of a GNRs-based optical fiber sensing probe via simple electrostatic self-assembly. The refractive index sensitivity of the biosensor was improved due to the advantages of the large specific surface area, hydrophilicity and broadband absorption spectrum of 2D Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets. The refractive index sensitivity of the biosensor with Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanosheets was improved by 44 % compared to that of the GNRs-based biosensor. The biosensor had a good linear relationship in the range of 0–900 μM for acetylcholine concentration with a sensitivity of 0.0304 nm/μM and the detection limit was 6.58 μM. The results indicated that the proposed GNRs/Ti 3 C 2 MXene enhanced optical fiber LSPR acetylcholine biosensor provides a promising avenue of detection for in biotechnology and medicine files.

LSPR-Driven Heterojunction Catalysts for Enhanced Photothermal CO2-to-Methanol

Fu Li,Shasha Fang,Mengxin Duan,Qian Huo,Qingxin Guan,Yingjun Chen,Wei Li

The Cu-CeO2-L catalyst exhibiting localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics was successfully fabricated via a urea-mediated self-assembly strategy. Under reaction conditions of 160 °C and 2 MPa (CO2/H2 = 1:3), the catalyst demonstrated a remarkable methanol yield of 2408.34 μmol·g–1·h–1, which was 3.48 times higher than the performance without light illumination. Monochromatic light experiments revealed similar performance at 550 and 365 nm, indicating that LSPR-generated “hot electrons” from Cu nanoparticles effectively overcame activation barriers in CO2 hydrogenation. Structural analyses revealed electron migration from the CeO2-L support to Cu nanoparticles via oxygen vacancies (Ov), forming a metal–support heterojunction. This interfacial architecture facilitated the creation of a built-in electric field (IEF), significantly accelerating the charge transfer dynamics. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in situ DRIFTS results further corroborated that electron-enriched Cu sites promoted H2 dissociation and the methanol synthesis pathway. The synergy of LSPR effects with the heterojunction provides an innovative method for nanoscale-level modulation of catalytic active sites, advancing the design of plasmon-enhanced photocatalysts for CO2 conversion.

Hydrothermal synthesis of gold nanoplates and their structure-dependent LSPR properties

Yanting Liu,Lijun Yang,Yajing Shen

We developed a facile hydrothermal method to synthesize gold nanoplates with the assistance of surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC). Gold nanostructure shapes from triangular, truncated triangular to hexagonal morphology with different sizes can be obtained by accommodating the molar ratios of the surfactant to the gold precursor ([CTAC]/[HAuCl4]). The edge width of gold nanoplates could also be adjusted from tens to hundreds of nanometers, and even several microns. The growth mechanism analysis reveals that the surfactant CTAC directs and promotes the growth of the tabular {111} facets to form nanoplate structures with the size and shape variations. The structure-dependent localized surface plasmon resonance of different gold nanoplates was theoretically and experimentally explained by finite element method simulation and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement, respectively. Based on the Raman spectrum analysis of the marker molecule 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) labeled with different gold nanoplates, it demonstrates that the enhanced SERS performance relies on the different plasmonic properties of the gold nanoplates. Therefore, the gold nanoplates may have potential applications in SERS-based sensing and imaging field.

An efficient LSPR method to quantitatively detect dimethoate: Development, characterization and evaluation

Dongxian Li,Yanyan Zhang,Qingqian Guo,Xiaoquan Sun,Hao Zhang,Shun Wang,Zephania Birech,Jiandong Hu

In recent years, there has been growing concern among consumers about pesticide contamination in fruits. Therefore, rapid, reliable, and consistent detection methods for OPPs, especially dimethoate, are crucially needed. The existing quantitative methods for detecting dimethoate are not suitable for rapid measuring system such as the dimethoate samples from two channels. Hence this paper examines the utilization of a dual-channel system for utilize the absorption variations of the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) bands of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were investigate for detection of dimethoate. Under optimized conditions, the relationship between concentrations of dimethoate and absorbance ratios (A(520)/A(640)) was linearly found in the concentration range of 10–100 nM. Result from the experiment shows that both channels exhibit a linear correlation coefficient as high as 0.97 and a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 5.5 nM. This LSPR detection system was characterized by testing the dimethoate in apple samples and the recovery rates were found to be in the range of 85.90% to 107.37%. The proposed dual-channel LSPR system for detecting dimethoate creating a new approach for detecting organophosphate insecticide in agricultural fields. It could lay the foundation for designing a high-throughput analysis of the insecticides using a wavelength division multiplexing switch (WDMS).

Copper Vacancy and LSPR-Activated MXene Synergistically Enabling Selective Photoreduction CO2 to Acetate

Chen Liao,Hongwei Zhou,Shunxin Zhang,Feng Wang,Ya Liu,Liejin Guo

Graphical A highly effective photocatalytic system (V Cu −CuInS 2 /MXene) was developed for transforming CO 2 into acetate under full spectrum irradiation. The incorporation of the LSPR effect and defect engineering leads to a highly selective system. Photocatalytic CO 2 conversion towards C 2+ fuels is a promising technology for simultaneously achieving carbon neutrality and alleviating the energy crisis. However, this strategy is inefficient due to the difficulty of both multi-electron transfer and C−C coupling during C 2+ formation. In this work, CuInS 2 /MXene heterostructure with Cu vacancy is rationally designed by in situ hydrothermal synthesis. The V Cu −CuInS 2 /MXene heterostructure has a suitable band structure and tight interface contact. Catalytic performances under different testing conditions, in situ spectroscopy, and COMSOL simulation reveal that LSPR-activated MXene promotes the formation of crucial intermediate CH 2 * and triggers the C−C coupling process under near-infrared light, as the key to acetate. Moreover, in situ XPS analysis, DFT calculations, and photoelectrochemical characterizations unveil that copper vacancy can promote charge transfer from CuInS 2 to MXene and boost local electron aggregation on the MXene, further enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency and selectivity of C 2 products. Contributing to the synergistic effect of copper vacancy and plasmonic MXene, V Cu −CuInS 2 /MXene achieved excellent CO 2 RR activity with an acetate evolution rate of 250.0 μmol/h/g and a selectivity of 97.5 % under the full spectrum irradiation, which is 38.8 and 3.3 times higher than that of V Cu −CuInS 2 and CuInS 2 /MXene, respectively.

Photocatalytic dye degradation by synergistically Cu LSPR and Schottky barrier enhanced Cu/gC3N4

Mingze Xu,Guangjie Wang,Haiyu Li,Tingsong Zhang,Jinhua Li,Yu Wang,Yue Peng,Wenzhe Si

The issue of water pollution has emerged as a formidable challenge, prompting a pressing need for solutions. The utilization of metal nanoparticles with surface plasmon resonance and semiconductor composite photocatalysts is regarded as a highly effective approach to solve this problem. g C 3 N 4 is an effective catalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants. Its photocatalytic performance could be enhanced by the use of the metal such as Au, Ag, and Cu. However, the Schottky barrier is generally believed to be the reason that Cu can enhances the photocatalytic performance of g C 3 N 4 . In fact, the plasmonic of Cu will also have an effect on the photocatalytic effect of g C 3 N 4 , like Au and Ag. In this study, it is first proposed that the photocatalytic performance of g C 3 N 4 can be enhanced by combining the plasmonic of Cu and the Schottky barrier. Cu g/C 3 N 4 nanocomposites with stable crystal structure, with Cu as the core and g C 3 N 4 as surface coating, were synthesized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X ray diffractometer (XRD) and ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV Vis) and X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Then, it is optimized that the Cu/g C 3 N 4 composite material which were prepared with 200 nm Cu particles, GSH as the ligand bridge, and a Cu: g C 3 N 4 ratio of 5:1, have the best photocatalytic property, which is 16.7 times of the photocatalytic property of g C 3 N 4 . Besides, the transfer efficiency of hot electrons of 33% (from Cu to g C 3 N 4 ) under the influence of the Schottky barrier (0.58 eV) is calculated theoretically. On this basis, the mechanism of Cu nanoparticles enhancing the photocatalytic performance of g C 3 N 4 was also been proved through the calculation result and transient photocurrent spectroscopy (TPC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and steady state transient fluorescence spectroscopy (PL) characterization. The excellent photocatalytic performance of the Cu/g C 3 N 4 composites is due to the simultaneous influence of Schottky barrier and LSPR of Cu.

Spatially differential gold nanocluster amplification of LSPR for ultrasensitive, label-free optical immunoassays

Zetai Liu,Bangfeng Wang,Yaru Wan,Yangcheng Liu,Mingyu Zhang,Wenqin Wu,Peng Chen,Wei Du,Yiwei Li,Guoping Wang,Xiaojun Feng,Bi-Feng Liu

The global impact of COVID-19 highlights the critical need for technologies enabling pre-symptomatic pathogen detection to curb pandemics. Addressing this need requires diagnostic sensors with significantly enhanced sensitivity for reliable low-abundance target detection. Here, we report a planar synergistic Cluster-Pore biosensing microchip (CP-Chip) that couples gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) fluorescence with gold nanopore localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). We demonstrate that this plasmonic coupling critically depends on the spatial distribution of AuNCs relative to the nanopores. Exploiting spatially differential AuNCs amplification, we designed the CP-Chip so specific target binding modulates AuNCs distribution. This label-free, wash-free approach amplifies optical signals under target-positive conditions while suppressing background in target-negative states, enhancing differential output. The CP-Chip achieves ultrasensitive SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein detection with a limit of detection of 150 fg/mL—marking a sensitivity gain exceeding three orders of magnitude over previous LSPR methods and proving suitable for low-abundance analysis. Integration with a mobile health platform enables rapid on-site testing. Validated via simulation and targeted antigen-antibody experiments, the CP-Chip emerges as a promising tool for early-stage infectious disease screening.

A Portable Optical Fiber Tip Facet LSPR Aptasensor for Detection of Fumonisin B1

Hong Lei,Chong Chen,Hui Yan

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a mycotoxin that mainly contaminates food crops. To avoid the harmful effect of FB1 on the human body, it is necessary to establish a convenient, sensitive, and accurate FB1 detection method. In this study, an optical fiber tip facet biosensor based on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) that adapts to a general detection platform was developed. An optical fiber end face was assembled with –NH2, Au nanoparticles (AuNPs), and aptamer, and the fabricating parameters were optimized. The results showed that the optical fiber LSPR biosensor had a good linear relationship ( ${R}^{\text {2}}$ = 0.9817) between the logarithmic FB1 concentration and the LSPR peak shifts within the linear range of concentrations of 0.8–200.0 ng/mL and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.17 ng/mL, as well as selectivity, recovery rates (96.08%–112.23%), and repeatability relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.37%. It was validated by corn. Therefore, it was feasible that a tip facet optical fiber LSPR biosensor could be used to detect FB1, with advantages of convenience, renewability, and low cost. It is easy to popularize and apply.

AuNP array coated substrate for sensitive and homogeneous SERS-immunoassay detection of human immunoglobulin G

Qi Qu,Jing Wang,Chuan Zeng,Mengfan Wang,Wei Qi,Zhimin He

Owing to the high sensitivity, fast responsiveness and high specificity, immunoassays using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) as the readout signal displayed great potential in disease diagnosis. In this study, we developed a SERS-immunoassay method for the detection of human immunoglobulin G (HIgG). Upon involving well-ordered AuA on a SERSIA substrate, the LSPR effect was further enhanced to generate a strong and uniform Raman signal through the formation of sandwich structure with the addition of target HIgG and SERSIA tag. Optimization of the assay provided a wide linear range (0.1–200 μg mL−1) and low limit of detection (0.1 μg mL−1). In addition, the SERS-immunoassay method displayed excellent specificity and was homogeneous, which guaranteed the practical use of this method in the quantitative detection of HIgG. To validate this assay, human serum was analysed, which demonstrated the potential advantages of SERS-immunoassay technology in clinical diagnostics.

LSPR-enhanced Bi4O5Br2/W18O49 S-scheme heterojunction boosts ciprofloxacin degradation via photocatalytic O2 activation

Jing Li,Mingkun Wu,Rui Tu,Jiacheng Li,Keliang Wang,Ju Guo,Yi Xie

The limited narrow spectral absorption and rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers in photocatalytic materials result in inefficient molecular oxygen activation and insufficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), severely restricting the degradation efficiency of organic pollutants. Herein, a composite catalyst with broad visible-light responsiveness was fabricated via a facile solvothermal and room-temperature stirring strategy, where sheet-like Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 was encapsulated with W 18 O 49 nanowires. The as-prepared catalyst exhibited high concentrations of h + and O 2 − active species, achieving a 92 % degradation rate of ciprofloxacin (20 mg/L) within 60 min, alongside exceptional environmental tolerance and stability. Experimental and computational investigations confirmed the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism, which enhances carrier separation while preserving electrons and holes with strong redox capabilities. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of W 18 O 49 synergistically promoted hot electrons and photogenerated electrons to activate O 2 , generating abundant O 2 − . This work proposes a novel design paradigm for efficient and stable visible-light photocatalysts, advancing solutions to emerging antibiotic pollutants in aquatic systems.
