MgFe2O4 Nanoparticle/Peracetic Acid Hybrids for Catalytic Oxidative Depolymerization of Lignin

Jingshun Zhuang,Saerona Kim,Mairui Zhang,Jiae Ryu,Jeeranan Nonkumwong,Laongnuan Srisombat,Kwang Ho Kim,Jeong Jae Wie,Gyu Leem,Chang Geun Yoo

Lignin is a promising feedstock for renewable fuels and chemicals due to its aromatic skeleton and natural abundance. Lignin can be converted to diverse aromatic monomers as well as dicarboxylic acids depending on the applied conversion technologies. Despite its great potential, its native and processing-induced heterogeneity and complexity limit the conversion efficiency and product selectivity. In this study, magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) nanoparticle–peracetic acid (PAA) has been investigated as an efficient catalyst–oxidant incorporation for catalytic oxidative depolymerization of lignin under mild conditions. Typically, the increase in processing severity can enhance the lignin conversion while it results in the further decomposition of aromatic compounds to dicarboxylic acids. However, in this study, the incorporation of MgFe2O4 nanoparticles and PAA not only enhanced the total product yield but also improved the selectivity of aromatic monomers. The oxidative depolymerization system using the catalyst–oxidant combination resulted in 46 wt % of total oil product with a 61% selectivity of aromatic monomers under mild temperature (90 °C). In addition, this combination catalyst showed relatively good cycling stability based on the total product yield after recycling five times via magnetic separation. Overall, MgFe2O4 nanoparticles play an important role as a co-catalyst with a PAA oxidant in the oxidative conversion of lignin with an enhanced conversion efficiency and recyclability, and it will facilitate the valorization of lignin in future bio-based fuels and chemicals.

Oxidative Depolymerization of Lignin to Aromatic Monomers Catalyzed by MgFe2O4 Under Alkaline Conditions

Rui Wang,Dayu Sun,Chenyu Zheng,Jingyi Gan,Ruiping Wei,Wei Xu,Guomin Xiao,Lijing Gao

Lignin, a crucial natural aromatic polymer, presents a pivotal challenge in achieving high-value utilization of biomass through depolymerization into aromatic compounds. To address the limitations of conventional lignin depolymerization processes, including harsh reaction conditions, poor catalyst recovery, and low product selectivity, this study establishes a green oxidative system based on the synergistic interaction between the magnetically separable spinel-structured MgFe 2 O 4 and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), systematically investigating its catalytic performance for enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) depolymerization. The MgFe 2 O 4 was synthesized via a solvothermal method, demonstrating excellent catalytic activity. Under optimized reaction conditions (10% H 2 O 2 , 0.075 g catalyst, 80°C, 4 h), the lignin oil yield reached 51.30%, with significantly enhanced aromatic monomer selectivity of 134.2 mg/g. Moreover, the products exhibited a notable reduction in molecular weight along with increased phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl group contents. Based on the Fenton-like mechanism involving the dynamic Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle, a regulation pathway of reactive oxygen species was proposed. Additionally, the catalyst exhibited exceptional stability with 88.9% retention of initial activity after four magnetic separation cycles. This work proposes a green catalytic strategy integrating high activity, selectivity, and recyclability for efficient lignin depolymerization, providing critical insights for advancing biomass refining technologies. Graphical This work presents a sustainable MgFe 2 O 4 /H 2 O 2 catalytic system for lignin valorization. The magnetically recoverable MgFe 2 O 4 enables efficient oxidative depolymerization of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) under mild conditions, achieving 134.2 mg/g aromatic monomers. A Fenton-like mechanism drives selective β-O-4 bond cleavage, while catalyst stability (> 88% activity after four cycles) highlights its potential for green biorefineries.

Fabrication of Hollow MgFe2O4 Microspheres for High Performance Anode of Lithium Ion Battery

Wenhui Liu,Riya Jin,Yunlu Li,yuanyuan Wu,Xiong Cao,Shuangqi Hu

In this work, spinel MgFe 2 O 4 hollow structural microspheres were fabricated through an environmental friendly hydrothermal carbon templating approach with subsequently annealing process in air, where carbon spheres plays as template to create void space, and that promote metal source loading into colloidal carbon sphere. The resultant hollow MgFe 2 O 4 sphere possess excellent textural properties of a large void space size (50-80nm) and tailored shell thickness(25-35nm). The spinel MgFe 2 O 4 hollow structural microspheres used as an anode material for rechargeable lithium-ion battery possesses a high initial discharge specific capacity of 616.3 mAh g -1 at a stable current density of 500 mAh g -1 and the capacity retention of 559.9 mAh g -1 by 18 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performances of the spinel MgFe 2 O 4 hollow structural microspheres may be associated with the special porous hollow structures, which deliver an easy Li + diffusion pathway and facilitate charge transfer and alleviate the volume variation and diminishes polarization in cycling.

Enhanced adsorption performance of sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline in aqueous solutions by MgFe2O4-magnetic biochar

Deng Yu,Wang Min,Yang Yunpeng,Li Xiaodong,Chen Wenqing,Ao Tianqi

Biochar has been reported as an excellent adsorbent for antibiotics, but the application faces the challenges of complicated separation. Here, MgFe 2 O 4 -magnetic biochars (MBCs) derived from corncob were synthesized at 300 °C to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and tetracycline (TC) simultaneously. The characteristics of MBC300 had a high magnetic intensity. MBC300 had the maximum adsorption capacity of SMX with 50.75 mg/g and the high adsorption amount of TC with 120.36 mg/g respectively, which were 4.49 and 6.48 times those of BC300. MBC300 had the advantage of energy conservation compared with MBC450 and MBC600. The better fitting kinetics and isotherms indicated that the SMX and TC sorption onto MBC300 were governed by chemisorption. FTIR and XPS analyses confirmed that the SMX sorption onto MBC300 was dominated by polar interactions and π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions (π-π EDA). Furthermore, the TC sorption was involved in pore filling, π-π EDA, H-bonds, and surface complexation. MBC300 presented effective adsorption of SMX and TC over a wide range of pH. The competition between antibiotics and coexisting pollutants of dissolved organic matter (DOM), Ca 2+ , CO 3 2− , and PO 4 3− significantly inhibited the sorption. The results indicate that MBC300 is an effective and promising adsorbent to treat SMX and TC simultaneously. MgFe 2 O 4 -magnetic biochar prepared at low temperature (300 °C) had good magnetic intensity. MBC300 had the highest adsorption capacity of SMX. SMX sorption was dominated by polar interactions and π-π EDA. TC sorption was involved in pore filling, π-π EDA, H-bonds, and surface complexation.

Synergistic optimization of Zn2+ doping and calcination temperature for photocatalytic performance of MgFe2O4 spinel ferrites

Li Mengxue,Wen Jiamin,Li Tianyu,Liu Yuqin

MgFe 2 O 4 spinel ferrites have attracted increasing interest as magnetically recyclable photocatalysts owing to their narrow bandgap (~ 1.9 eV) and structural robustness; however, their photocatalytic efficiency is often limited by rapid charge‐carrier recombination. In this work, Mg 1-x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 (x = 0–0.15) photocatalysts were synthesized via co-precipitation route, and the combined effects of Zn 2+ doping and calcination temperature (700–900℃) on their structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties were systematically investigated using a full factorial experimental design. XRD and TEM analyses confirm the successful incorporation of Zn 2+ into the spinel lattice without secondary phase formation, accompanied by enhanced crystallinity at elevated calcination temperatures. UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra reveal a modest enhancement of visible-light absorption (600–800 nm) with increasing Zn 2+ content, while the fundamental bandgap slightly widens from 1.88 eV (undoped) to 1.95–1.98 eV upon Zn 2+ substitution. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under UV irradiation demonstrates a distinct global performance maximum at x = 0.10 and 800 °C, yielding a degradation efficiency of 97.23% and an apparent rate constant of 0.0402 min⁻ 1 , which is ~ 1.56 times higher than that of undoped MgFe 2 O 4 under identical conditions. Radical scavenging experiments indicate that hydroxyl radicals are the dominant reactive species, predominantly generated via electron-mediated oxygen reduction pathways. The observed enhancement arises from a non-additive, synergistic interaction between Zn 2+ -induced electronic modulation and temperature-controlled crystallinity, rather than from surface area or bandgap narrowing alone. This study provides quantitative evidence for synergistic optimization in doped spinel ferrites and offers guidance for the rational design of efficient, recyclable magnetic photocatalysts.

Bifunctional hierarchical HA/MgFe2O4 bioceramic scaffolds with magnetic hyperthermia and osteogenic activity fabricated by vat photopolymerization

Yu Luo,Ren-Zhong Zhang,Jia-Min Wu,Yi-Ning He,Yun-Song Shi,Ze-Yuan Li,Zi-Mo Liu,Yu-Sheng Shi

Bone defects resulting from tumor resections pose a major clinical challenge, demanding simultaneous solutions for preventing local tumor recurrence and achieving efficient bone regeneration. Traditional treatments often fail to integrate effective hyperthermia therapy with optimal bone scaffold performance, leading to suboptimal clinical outcomes. This study developed a novel bifunctional HA/MgFe 2 O 4 composite bioceramic scaffold via digital light processing (DLP) and multi-cycle vacuum infiltration, where hydroxyapatite (HA) enables bone regeneration and magnesium ferrite (MgFe 2 O 4 ) provides magnetic hyperthermia functionality. The scaffolds exhibit excellent magnetocaloric performance: under an alternating magnetic field (92 G, 100 kHz), the scaffold with the highest infiltration concentration (0.62 g/mL) achieves a temperature rise of 16.3 °C (from 21.5 °C to 37.8 °C) within 10 min. Meanwhile, they maintain compressive strength of 6.88–9.08 MPa, which is suitable for cancellous bone applications. Material characterization reveals that Mg 2+ and Fe 3+ incorporation induces HA lattice distortion, promotes β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) formation, and accelerates biodegradation in simulated body fluid (SBF). In vitro biological evaluations show that the scaffolds exhibit 125% cell viability (vs. pure HA control), elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and enhanced osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs). This patient-specific platform integrates precise 3D architecture, tunable magnetocaloric effects, and bioactive bone regeneration, offering a synergistic strategy for combined tumor therapy and bone repair in post-resection osteolytic defects.

MgFe2O4/PU composite sponges with opposite wettability for oil removal and PMS-assisted degradation of organic pollutants

Yumei Xing,Yawei Shi,Keyan Liu,Yan Wang,Ya Sun,Zonglin Pan,Mengqi Li,Mingxing Guo,Guanghui Ding

Composite sponges with opposite wettability were successfully prepared. • ODA-MgFe 2 O 4 -PU can effectively absorb oil. • TA-MgFe 2 O 4 -PU can effectively activate PMS to degrade organic pollutants. • The degradation pathway was proposed by DFT calculation and LC-MS analysis. Dissolved organic pollutants and oils are prevalent wastewater contaminants, and developing efficient remediation technologies remains a research hotspot. Herein, magnesium ferrite (MgFe 2 O 4 ) was synthesized via coprecipitation and immobilized on polyurethane (PU) sponges, followed by hydrophobic octadecylamine (ODA) and hydrophilic tannic acid (TA) modification to fabricate ODA-MgFe 2 O 4 -PU and TA-MgFe 2 O 4 -PU composite sponges. Hydrophobic ODA-MgFe 2 O 4 -PU showed excellent oil absorption capacity of 26.8–50.3 g/g for various oils and stable hydrophobicity under complex water conditions. By contrast, hydrophilic TA-MgFe 2 O 4 -PU activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to efficiently degrade Rhodamine B and other pollutants with removal efficiencies of 64.5%–95%, displaying good environmental adaptability and reusability. The RhB degradation mechanism and pathway were clarified via quenching experiments, electrochemical tests, spectral characterization, functional theory calculations and mass spectrometry analysis. Moreover, ECOSAR prediction and Vigna radiata germination tests verified the effective detoxification of degraded RhB. Download: Download high-res image (151KB) Download: Download full-size image

Construction of MgFe2O4/rGO/WO3 Z-scheme photocatalyst for efficient degradation of organic pollutants: performance, mechanism, and reusability

Khanh-Huyen Nguyen,Thu-Hien Le,Thi-Duyen To,Xuan-Duc Nghiem,Dinh-Trinh Tran

MgFe 2 O 4 /rGO/WO 3 (MAG) Z -scheme visible light-driven photocatalyst was successfully synthesized with high purity. Synergic effects within MAG Z -scheme photocatalyst effectively enhanced the photocatalytic activity by a factor of 1.5–3.3. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated through the degradation of tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotics, methylene blue (MB), direct blue 71 (DB-71), livestock and textile industrial wastewaters. MB and DB-71 degradation efficiency catalyzed by MAG reached 90.22 ± 2.56 % and 87.62 ± 2.26 % after 150 min, while these figures for TC and CIP were respectively 84.47 ± 2.16 % and 78.58 ± 2.36 %. The removal efficiency depended on contact time, pH value, catalyst dosage, pollutant concentration, and co-existing ions. Radical trapping tests and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy analyses showed that superoxide anion radicals were mainly responsible for degrading the pollutants. The chemical oxygen demand and toxicology assessment revealed about 75 % of organic dyes and 67 % of antibiotics were mineralized while the toxicology of the by-products was negligible. The photocatalytic performance was high and stable after five repetitive cycles, with no discernible changes to the photocatalyst's surface properties. COD removal efficiency for textile and livestock wastewaters respectively reached 48.6 % and 42.9 %, lower than those for synthetic samples due to the presence of other organic compounds and co-existing ions, but met national technical regulations on the effluents of livestock and textile industry of Vietnam. The findings in this work provide a practical approach to mitigating hazardous organic dyes and antibiotics commonly found in textile and livestock wastewaters, thereby protecting public health and the environment.

Synergistic activation of MgFe2O4/ZnO photocatalyst with peroxymonosulfate enables efficient degradation of ciprofloxacin: A study on radical multipath mechanisms

Xue-Ying Wan,Yang Zhao,Hui-Zhan Wen,Hai-Tao Zhang,Zha-Xi Wan-Mo,Yu-Long Xie,Lun Pan

The widespread use of ciprofloxacin antibiotics poses substantial environmental and health threats due to their persistence in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, a light-responsive MgFe 2 O 4 /ZnO (MFOZ) composite was synthesized via a co-precipitation method for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP). The constructed heterojunction structure, with MgFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles uniformly anchored on ZnO, significantly increased the specific surface area (51.94 m 2 ·g −1 ) and enhanced light absorption, narrowing the bandgap to 2.91 eV. This unique configuration facilitated the separation of photogenerated charge carriers, as evidenced by a higher photocurrent density and lower electrochemical impedance compared to the individual components. Under light irradiation, the MgFe 2 O 4 /ZnO/PMS system achieved a 95 % CIP removal within 100 min, with a kinetic rate constant of 0.0262 min −1 , which is 5–11 times superior to that of the single-component systems. Radical quenching experiments and EPR analysis confirmed the involvement of •OH, SO 4 •⁻, O 2 •⁻, and 1 O 2 , among which O 2 •⁻ was identified as the primary contributor. The catalyst demonstrated remarkable stability, retaining over 80 % efficiency after five consecutive cycles, and maintained high efficacy in both tap and surface water matrices. Effective across a broad pH range (3.96–9.74), the system's performance was, however, inhibited by the presence of HCO 3 - and H 2 PO 4 - anions. The degradation pathway of CIP involved defluorination of the quinolone ring, oxidation of the piperazine ring, and C-F bond cleavage, ultimately leading to the formation of low-molecular-weight products. This work presents a stable and synergistic strategy that couples photocatalysis with PMS activation for antibiotic remediation, thereby advancing practical solutions for water treatment.

A Sandwich Structure Ag/MgFe2O4-Deposited Surface Carbonized Wood for Integrated Solar Steam Generation and Photoreduction of Cr(VI)

Suyue Luo,Zhenzhong Liu,Xinran Yin,Zuopeng Lin,Shuo Zhang,Junfeng Chen,Minghui Guo

The severe deterioration of the marine ecosystem significantly negatively impacts the performance of solar-driven steam generation (SSG) and the quality of the obtained freshwater. Herein, a bifunctional Ag/MgFe 2 O 4 @SCW reactor with a sandwich structure is designed for efficient SSG and Cr(VI) reduction, which is constructed via in situ deposit Ag nanoparticles (NPs) and MgFe 2 O 4 onto surface carbonized wood (SCW). Owing to the advanced sandwich structure and strong interfacial interactions between each component, an ultra-high evaporation rate of 1.55 kg m −2 h −1 and the efficiency of 88.6% are achieved using Ag/MgFe 2 O 4 @SCW under 1 sun. The system exhibits the long-term evaporation performance in the simulated sewage and strong acid/base solutions along with water-harvesting capacity in outdoor solar desalination. The quality of distilled water after desalination of actual seawater and NaCl solutions with different concentrations meets the WHO-recommended drinkable water standards. Furthermore, Ag/MgFe 2 O 4 @SCW shows outstanding antibacterial property, self-desalting capacity, as well as reusability and structure stability. Most importantly, the fast carrier separation endows Ag/MgFe 2 O 4 @SCW with superior photocatalytic activity and Cr(VI) photoreduction of up to 96.1% after 180 min of illumination. The bifunctional Ag/MgFe 2 O 4 @SCW reactor provides an advanced synergistic mechanism for improving SSG and photocatalytic performance, while being promising for solar-powered production of clean water.

Sulfur-doped MgFe2O4 with oxygen vacancies: Unveiling the synergistic role of electron transfer pathways in boosting radical generation for efficient peroxymonosulfate activation

Lin Wang,Shoudie Yue,Mengyang Li,Mei Wang,Wenqi Wang,Jirong Yu,Shaolong Wang,Baojun Liu

Sulfur-doped MgFe 2 O 4 constructs oxygen-vacancy-rich surfaces, enhancing interfacial charge transfer. • Fe centers and the electron transfer pathway form a dual-electron activation mechanism for PMS activation. • The electron transfer pathway boosts radical generation by 2.0-fold compared to single-pathway systems. • S-MgFe 2 O 4 achieves 91.59% tetracycline degradation with 85.98% activity retention after six cycles. The electron transfer pathway (ETP) in Fenton-like reactions enables the selective degradation of electron-rich micropollutants, yet the potential synergistic interplay between ETP and radical pathways remains underexplored. Herein, we synthesize sulfur-doped MgFe 2 O 4 with abundant oxygen vacancies (S-MgFe 2 O 4 /OVs) and unveil a novel “dual-electron migration pathway,” where ETP synergistically enhances radical generation for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Electrons can migrate from electron-rich pollutants to Fe sites via an electron shuttling bridge (S-MgFe 2 O 4 ), serving as an additional electron source to accelerate the rate-limiting step of Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling, thereby promoting PMS cleavage and amplifying the generation of SO 4 •− and • OH. This synergy enables the S-MgFe 2 O 4 /PMS system to achieve 91.59% tetracycline degradation within 20 min (k obs  = 0.1125 min −1 , 1.76-fold higher than that of undoped MgFe 2 O 4 ) with excellent stability (85.98% activity retention after six cycles). Our work pioneers a new paradigm for regulating radical generation via electron transfer, offering a transformative strategy for designing synergistic advanced oxidation process catalysts.
