Hierarchical NiFeP microflowers directly grown on Ni foam for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Jiahao Yu,Gongzhen Cheng,Wei Luo

Developing low-cost, highly efficient, and superior stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for upcoming renewable and clean energy systems. Here, 3D ternary nickel iron phosphide microflowers with a hierarchically porous morphology directly grown on Ni foam via a successive hydrothermal and phosphidation method are synthesized. Benefitting from their unique 3D hierarchical microflower-like structure and the strong electron interactions between Fe, Ni and P, the as-synthesized (NixFe1−x)2P catalysts can effectively catalyze the OER with an overpotential of 219 mV at a current density of 20 mA cm−2 in alkaline media, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the best among the reported non-noble metal-based catalysts.

Construction of NiFeP/CoP nanosheets/nanowires hierarchical array as advanced electrocatalysts for water oxidation

Xiaoli Jiang,Yao Li,Miao He,Lingxi Zhou,Qiaoji Zheng,Fengyu Xie,Wenjing Jie,Dunmin Lin

Cost-effective hierarchical electrocatalysts with excellent performance and high stability for water splitting play an important role in promoting social sustainable development. Herein, we report a three-dimensional (3D) trimetallic nickel-iron-cobalt phosphide with a hierarchical nanoarray structure grown in situ on carbon cloth via a combined method of two-step hydrothermal reaction and following low-temperature phosphating using a carbon cloth as a conductive substrate. The synthesized NiFeP/CoP/CC exhibits excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic performance, giving small overpotentials of 250 mV, 270 mV and 320 mV at current densities of 20 mA cm −2 , 50 mA cm −2 and 200 mA cm −2 in alkaline electrolyte , respectively, with a small Tafel slope of 51 mV dec −1 . In addition, the catalytic activity of the material remains stable for at least 50 h, and the turnover frequency (TOF) is 0.466 mol O 2 s −1 at an over potential of 300 mV. These properties of the material are comparable to those of the noble metal catalyst RuO 2 /CC, which may be ascribed to the hierarchical microstructure, good conductivity and desirable synergistic effect among metal ions .

Fabrication of a porous NiFeP/Ni electrode for highly efficient hydrazine oxidation boosted H2 evolution

Honglei Wang,Shengyang Tao

Rational optimization of the surface electronic states and physical structures of non-noble metal nanomaterials is essential to improve their electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we report a facile dual-regulation strategy to fabricate NiFeP/Ni (P-NiFeP/Ni) porous nanoflowers, which involves Fe-doping and creating pores on nanosheets. The as-prepared P-NiFeP/Ni has a hierarchically porous surface, which exposes more electrochemically active sites and dramatically enhances the electron transfer rate. Thus, it exhibits excellent catalytic activity in both anodic hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Interestingly, the coupled electrolysis cell only offers a potential of 0.162 V at 10 mA cm−2 to enable HzOR boosted H2 evolution, highlighting an energy-saving hydrogen evolution strategy.

Enhancing Water Splitting Performance via NiFeP-CoP on Cobalt Foam: Synergistic Effects and Structural Optimization

Shihu Zhu,Yingxing Yang,Mengyao Zhao,Hui Zhao,Siyuan Liu,Jinyou Zheng

Hydrogen energy holds great promise for alleviating energy and environmental issues, with alkaline electrochemical water splitting being a key approach for hydrogen production. However, the high cost and limited availability of noble-metal catalysts hinder its widespread application. This study presents a novel method to fabricate a NiFeP-CoP/CF electrode. By growing CoOOH nanosheets on Co foam at low temperatures and filling the gaps between nanosheets with Ni and Fe phosphides, the prepared electrode exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic performance. For the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, it requires overpotentials of only 235 mV and 290 mV to reach current densities of 10 mA cm−2and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. In the case of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), overpotentials of 89 mV and 172 mV are needed to achieve current densities of −10 mA cm−2and −100 mA cm−2. The NiFeP-CoP/CF-based electrolytic cell requires a cell voltage of only 1.70 V to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2for overall water splitting. Moreover, during long-term continuous operation at 100 mA cm−2, the overpotential for OER remains constant while that for HER decreases. The low-temperature growth of CoOOH nanosheets on Co foam provides a new strategy for large-scale electrode production applicable in electrochemical processes and pollutant degradation. Significantly, filling the nanosheet gaps with phosphides effectively enhances the electrocatalytic performance of the system. This work offers a facile and cost-effective technique for the large-scale production of metallic (oxyhydr)hydroxides for electrocatalytic water splitting, showing great potential for industrial applications.

Highly-dispersed 2D NiFeP/CoP heterojunction trifunctional catalyst for efficient electrolysis of water and urea

Guang-Lan Li,Ying-Ying Miao,Fei Deng,Shen Wang,Rui-Xin Wang,Wei-Hang Lu,Ru-Liang Chen

The electrocatalytic production of “green hydrogen”, such as through the electrolysis of water or urea has been vigorously advocated to alleviate the energy crisis. However, their electrode reactions including oxygen evolution reaction (OER), urea oxidation reaction (UOR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) all suffer from sluggish kinetics, which urgently need catalysts to accelerate the processes. Herein, we design and prepare an OER/UOR/HER trifunctional catalyst by transforming the homemade CoO nanorod into a two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin heterojunction nickel–iron-cobalt hybrid phosphides nanosheet (NiFeP/CoP) via a hydrothermal-phosphorization method. Consequently, a strong electronic interaction was found among the Ni 2 P/FeP 4 /CoP heterogeneous interfaces, which regulates the electronic structure. Besides the high mass transfer property of 2D nanosheet, Ni 2 P/FeP 4 /CoP displays improved OER/UOR/HER performance. At 10 mA cm − 2 , the OER overpotential reaches 274 mV in 1.0 M KOH, and the potential of UOR is only 1.389 V in 1.0 M KOH and 0.33 M urea. More strikingly, the two-electrode systems for electrolysis water and urea-assisted electrolysis water assembled by NiFeP/CoP could maintain long-term stability for 35 h and 12 h, respectively. This work may help to pave the way for upcoming research horizons of multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Epitaxial growth of prussian blue analogue derived NiFeP thin film for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Da-Wei Wang,Yin-Di Zhu,Song Lei,Shu-Mei Chen,Zhi-Gang Gu,Jian Zhang

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water splitting plays an important role in the storage and conversion of clean energy. The development of efficient electrocatalytic materials for HER has attracted much attention in current research. In this work, a homogeneous NiFe-based prussian blue analogue (NiFe-PBA) thin film is prepared on the surface of nickel foam by liquid phase epitaxial (LPE) layer-by-layer (LBL) dipping method. Then the NiFe-PBA film reacts with PH 3 produced by sodium hypophosphite to form a bimetal phosphide NiFeP film. The electrocatalytic HER properties under alkaline condition indicate that the NiFeP film only requires 99 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm −2 and the performance can be maintained for over 30 h without obvious degradation even at 100 mA cm −2 . The results imply that the prepared NiFeP film has excellent HER performance and durable stability. This work is of great significance for the preparation of self-supporting and low-cost bimetal phosphide thin film for efficient HER.

Monolithic electrode integrated of ultrathin NiFeP on 3D strutted graphene for bifunctionally efficient overall water splitting

Rui-Qing Li,Bao-Lu Wang,Tian Gao,Ran Zhang,Chenyang Xu,Xiangfen Jiang,Jinjue Zeng,Yoshio Bando,Pengfei Hu,Yongle Li,Xue-Bin Wang

High-performance earth-abundant electrocatalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolutions are highly desired for renewable energy but remain challenging. Herein, we have developed ultrathin NiFeP nanosheets , and merged the NiFeP with a 3D support of sponge-like strutted graphenes (SG). The synthesized NiFeP/SG, a porous monolith, shows efficient electrocatalytic activities for oxygen and hydrogen evolutions in alkaline electrolyte with low overpotentials of 218 and 115 mV, respectively. Using NiFeP/SG as direct catalytic electrodes, the overall water splitting requires a low cell voltage of 1.54 V to achieve a current of 10 mA cm −2 . The high performances result from the shifted-up d states caused by iron incorporation, the ultrathin NiFeP, and the 3D network structure of SG. Additionally, NiFeP/SG demonstrates excellent gravimetric catalytic activities , meaningful to aerospace and portables. The material opens the way to a universal robust lightweight catalytic electrode for a variety of applications in electrochemical energy storage and conversion .

Facile fabrication of amorphous NiFeP nanosheets to promote urea oxidation reaction for energy-saving hydrogen production

Cao Junhui,Wang Guanglong,Hou Shusen,Yu Weixin,Yang Zhijun,Wu Yihui

Although Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) with favorable thermodynamic potential has been well-acknowledged as a feasible alternative to slow oxygen evolution reaction for hydrogen production through water splitting, but the shortage of low-cost and high efficiency electrocatalysts restricts its practical development. In this research, a free-standing nickel–iron-phosphide (NiFeP) nanosheets electrocatalysts on nickel foam is synthesized by electrodeposition method. The presence of phosphide (P) causes nickel–iron (NiFe) to evolve from crystalline to amorphous structures. The NiFeP electrocatalysts with nanosheets structure exhibit reliable electrocatalytic activities toward UOR with small potential of 1.397 V at 10 mA cm −2 , low Tafel slope of 60.1 mV dec −1 and outstanding catalytic stability in 1.0 M KOH with 0.33 M urea solution. More impressively, the electrochemical activation energy (E a ) of UOR for the NiFeP electrocatalyst (35.6 kJ mol −1 ) is much lower than that of NiFe electrocatalyst (52.1 kJ mol −1 ). The phosphorus doping triggers the electronic structure of Ni and Fe site reconstruction, which is conducive to accelerating charge and mass transport, and then contributes to the enhanced electrocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the formation of amorphous structure and nanosheets structure by the incorporation of phosphorus contributes to the improved intrinsic activity of NiFeP for UOR.

Synergistic bimetallic phosphides and graphene enhancement NiFeP/C@rGO composites as high-performance anode for lithium-ion batteries

Yanyang Wang,Weilai Xu,Fupeng Liu,Xue Li,Jiaming Liu,Kailei Sun,Ruixiang Wang

s The practical application of transition metal phosphides (TMPs) in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been severely hindered, primarily due to slow reaction kinetics and significant volume changes. While optimizing nanostructures could mitigate these issues, it remains a considerable challenge. Herein, NiFeP/C@rGO composites were synthesized through a multi-step protocol, involving coprecipitation, electrostatic self-assembly, and low-temperature phosphatization. The composites feature reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-coated nano-cubic frameworks derived from Prussian blue analogues (Ni/Fe-PBA), where the rGO carbon layer serves dual functions: effectively buffering volume expansion during charge/discharge cycles and enhancing overall electrical conductivity. Furthermore, the bimetallic heterostructure synergistically optimizes electrochemical performance. Remarkably, the optimized NiFeP/C@rGO-21 electrode demonstrates outstanding cycling stability, maintaining a specific capacity of 530.4 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at a high current density of 1000 mA g −1 .

Metal-organic frameworks derived Mo–NiFeP hierarchical nanoflowers as a robust electrocatalyst for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction

Xingxing Jiang,Yu Li,Xiao Du,Yang Zhao,Donghong Duan,Zhonglin Zhang,Xiaogang Hao

Developing stable and efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for advancing water electrolysis and sustainable energy systems. Herein, we exploit a trimetallic MoNiFe metal-organic framework (MOF) with high surface area, porosity, synergistic active sites derived from metallic components, and charge-tunable organic ligands. Via a solvothermal synthesis followed by gas-phase phosphorization, the MoNiFe-MOF/NF precursor is transformed into Mo–NiFeP@NC/NF. Benefiting from structural and compositional advantages, Mo–NiFeP@NC/NF exhibits superior OER activity and stability in alkaline media compared to commercial RuO 2 /NF. The catalyst achieves current densities of 50 and 100 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 271 and 303 mV, respectively, along with a reduced Tafel slope, indicating favorable reaction kinetics. Moreover, the electrode shows negligible activity degradation after continuous operation at 50 mA cm −2 for 61 h. This work provides a new insight into the rational construction of efficient and stable non-precious metal OER catalysts based on metal doping and MOF-derived strategies.

Enhanced electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination by modulating metal-support interaction and H generation of single-Pd-atom anchored NiFeP electrode

Zhefei Zhao,Xuyao Yao,Ruopeng Yu,Xingyu Luo,Minhao Chen,Xiangxiang Zhang,Yinghua Xu,Youqun Chu,Xinbiao Mao,Huajun Zheng

Electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (EHDC) stands out as an economical and prospective technology for eliminating chlorinated organic pollutants. Single-atom catalyst engineering and metal-support interaction (MSI) offer the promising strategies for developing electrocatalysts with high atom utilization and reactivity. Herein, atomically dispersed palladium (Pd) anchored on the iron (Fe)-introduced nickel phosphide (NiFeP) support is reported. The prepared NiFeP-Pd electrode exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity in 4-CP removal efficiency (98.8 %) with an ultra-low dosage of Pd (0.0497 mg cm −2 ) and the highest reported MA value (446.01 min −1 g −1 ), surpassing Ni 2 P-Pd by 6.34 times. Experimental results combined with theoretical calculations suggest that the superior performance of NiFeP-Pd stems from the modulated support by Fe introduction, which not only enhances the generation of adsorbed atomic hydrogen species (H*), but also reduces the energy barrier of C-H formation on Pd sites by regulating the MSI. In addition, single-Pd-atom construction on NiFeP with good conductivity and large specific surface area makes the contributions as well.

Carbon matrix NiFeP/C nanoparticles anchored on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets as heterostructure high-performance anode for lithium-ion batteries

Yanyang Wang,Ruixiang Wang,Jiaming Liu,Zhenping Qiu,Xiaohua Yu,Weilai Xu,Jinhui Li,Fupeng Liu

Engineered micro-nano heterogeneous architectures for transition metal phosphide (TMPs) anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) provide multifunctional active components. These components synergistically interact to address pivotal challenges of pronounced volume expansion and sluggish reaction kinetics within the electrode. Consequently, this engineering design approach significantly enhances the overall battery performance. In this study, a self-assembled approach is employed to integrate hybridized NiFe-PBA nanocubes with two-dimensional (2D) monolayer MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ), producing a heterostructured NiFeP/C@Ti 3 C 2 T x composite. In this meticulously engineered architecture, the interface between the outer MXene layer and NiFeP embedded within the carbon matrix exhibits several distinct superiorities, such as rapid interfacial ion migration, multidirectional migration pathways, and strong spatial adaptability. The resulting non-uniform phase structure effectively mitigates electrode expansion and enhances electronic conductivity. Consequently, the NiFeP/C@Ti 3 C 2 T x -15 composite demonstrates distinct performance advantages over NiFeP/C without MXene. The composite achieves a specific capacity of 689.4 mAh g⁻¹ at 200 mA g⁻¹ over 300 cycles, double that of NiFeP/C. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations validate the electronic conductivity facilitated by the heterointerface between MXene and NiFeP, substantiating the strategic significance of the heterostructure in advancing high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
