Constructing Well-defined Pt0-Ptδ+ interfaces via Snm-Ox-Kn modulation for Coke‐Resistant propane dehydrogenation

Jianhao Jiao,Haoxuan Tan,Yun Zu,Maojie Yuan,Kai He,Xiangchen Tian,Feifei Han,Zhongxing Geng,Ye Yang,Yucai Qin,Lijuan Song

Bimetallic PtSn catalysts in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) have suffered from rapid deactivation due to the segregation of Pt and Sn atoms at high temperatures, weakening its interactions. Herein, this work proposed an innovative dual-regulation strategy that modified the Sn precursor and incorporated potassium (K) modification to construct a Sn m -O x -K n promoter unit with a strong interaction with the γ-Al 2 O 3 support. Such a structure not only stabilized the PtSn active phase but also precisely tuned the electronic structure of Pt 0 -Pt δ+ , further evoking exceptional PDH performance. Under comparable conditions, the optimized PtSn/KAl 2 O 3 -Sn(acac) 2 catalyst (Pt δ+ /Pt 0  = 1.57) achieved enviable propane conversion (∼50.9%) and propylene selectivity (∼99.5%) with a remarkably low deactivation rate of 0.003 h −1 . Advanced characterization techniques confirmed that the unique Pt 0 -Pt δ+ active phase effectively suppressed the formation of carbon precursors (e.g., single-ring aromatics and alkyne) during deep dehydrogenation, while promoting the desorption of propylene and hydrogen. This work offers valuable insights and theoretical foundations for the development of efficient and carbon-resistant PtSn catalysts for PDH reaction.

Conformationally Variable Peptides Trap and Detoxify Ox-LDL in Plaques for Attenuating Atherosclerosis in Multiple Species

Hong-Mei Zhao,Jun-Ye Chen,Qi-Lin Liang,Xi-Xi Dong,Ying Fan,Guo-Yang Xu,Danhua Chen,Jing-Xian Huang,Jia-Huan He,Jia-Qi Feng,Ke-Qiang Shu,Yu Zeng,Yun-Fei Xue,Kai Song,Lin Wang,Jing Wang,Kai Yue,Xin-Xin Zhang,Hua Zhang,Lei Wang,Hao Wang

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events due to atherosclerosis (AS) are the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Current therapeutic strategies failed to simultaneously target lipid deposition, chronic inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Herein, we developed BIFD, a conformationally variable peptide targeting lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) on oxidized low-density lipoproteins (ox-LDL), which binds ox-LDL to form nanoaggregates, blocking ox-LDL toxicity, reducing inflammation, promoting metabolism/excretion of ox-LDL in macrophage. In addition, both ox-LDL specifically distributed in plaque sites and the targetability of BIFD to ox-LDL enable the BIFD targetability to plaque of AS. Therefore, rapamycin (Rapa), an anti-inflammatory drug, is designed to be encapsulated into BIFD to form Rapa@BIFD nanoparticles (NPs). Rapa@BIFD may target plaque, enhancing accumulation and retention of Rapa@BIFD on the AS lesion. Consequently, Rapa@BIFD demonstrated high efficacy against AS with minimal side effects. In vitro and in vivo studies in apolipoprotein E-knockout murine and canine models revealed that Rapa@BIFD effectively reduced oxidative damage, and inflammatory responses, while promoting lipid metabolism and excretion. Rapa@BIFD mitigated side effects of Rapa, such as hyperlipidemia and splenic toxicity. These findings present a transformative multitarget for AS, combining efficacy with minimal side effects and enhanced clinical translatability.

Naringenin Attenuates Ox-LDL-induced Injury in HUVECs by Regulating Lipophagy Partly through the SOCE Pathway

Linhong Jiang,Dandan Bai,Yunjun Yang,Yingying Wu,Yanran Chen,Mengyuan Wang,Wenxin Wang,Haixia Wang,Yanzhe Xiong,Siqi Zhu,Xinyu He,Jun Long,Dongping Yuan,Jingwei Chen

ObjectiveNaringenin (NAR) is a naturally occurring tiny molecule that has a significant role in lipid metabolism. However, the molecular mechanism by which NAR is involved in lipid metabolism to protect ECs is not clear. This study aims to investigate the effect of NAR on autophagy in oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and its potential molecular mechanisms.MethodsOxidized LDL-induced HUVECs injury in vitro was treated with NAR. Chloroquine was used as an autophagy inhibitor. Ionomycin (Iono) and 2-aminoethoxydiphenylborate (2-APB) were used as an SOCE pathway agonist and an inhibitor, respectively. The autophagy levels in HUVECs were determined by quantitative real-time PCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence methods. The concentration of calcium ions in HUVECs was measured by flow cytometry.ResultsThe findings revealed that NAR increased the viability of ox-LDL-impaired HUVECs. NAR increased the level of autophagy and decreased lipid accumulation in ox-LDL-treated HUVECs, which could interfere with chloroquine. Moreover, NAR significantly downregulated the expression of STIM1 and ORAI1 proteins and Ca2+ levels in the SOCE, which could be interfered with Iono or 2-APB, respectively.ConclusionIn summary, NAR can increase autophagy levels and decrease lipid accumulation in HUVECs, eventually protecting against ox-LDL-induced injury in HUVECs, which is associated with inhibition of the SOCE pathway.

Enhanced hydrogen evolution reactions: Regulating Pt-Ox bonds on bluecoke-based electrocatalyst through simple iron doping

Rongrong Yang,Jun Zhou,Yuanqing Shi,Yafeng Xiao,Lei Wu,Rock Keey Liew,Mu Naushad,Su Shiung Lam

The reconstruction of local electronic states in Pt-O x is an effective strategy for balancing charge distribution and enhancing the intrinsic activity of noble metals. This study presents the use of highly porous and oxygen-rich activated bluecoke powders as a desirable carbon support, and regulates Pt-O x bonds by incorporating the Fe as transition metal, leading to the development of an efficient bluecoke-based electrocatalyst characterized (Fe/Pt–O@MKABC) by exceptionally low Pt loading. The loading amount of Pt in Fe/Pt–O@MKABC is only 0.98 wt%, which is less than the 5% reported for commercial Pt/C catalyst, yet its hydrogen evolution performance is comparable. The developed catalyst presents exciting catalytic ability with overpotential of only 17 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 , a high mass activity of 8.3 A/(cm 2 ·mg pt ) at 50 mV, a large turnover frequency of 8.29 H 2 /s, and outstanding durability with a mere increase of 5 mV over 10000 cycles in acidic electrolyte. Detailed spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the abundant oxygen on activated bluecoke powders provides an opportunity for the construction of Fe-O y and Pt-O x . The introduction of Fe leads to electron rearrangement in Fe/Pt–O@MKABC, promoting electron transfer and reducing the adsorption free energy of H*, and the interaction between Fe-O y and Pt-O x enhances the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance.

Melatonin Attenuates ox-LDL-Induced Endothelial Dysfunction by Reducing ER Stress and Inhibiting JNK/Mff Signaling

Peng Li,Changlian Xie,Jiankai Zhong,Zhongzhou Guo,Kai Guo,Qiuyun Tu

Endothelial dysfunction, which is characterized by damage to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria, is involved in a variety of cardiovascular disorders. Here, we explored whether mitochondrial damage and ER stress are associated with endothelial dysfunction. We also examined whether and how melatonin protects against oxidized low-density lipoprotein- (ox-LDL-) induced damage in endothelial cells. We found that CHOP, GRP78, and PERK expressions, which are indicative of ER stress, increased significantly in response to ox-LDL treatment. ox-LDL also induced mitochondrial dysfunction as evidenced by decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, increased mitochondrial ROS levels, and downregulation of mitochondrial protective factors. In addition, ox-LDL inhibited antioxidative processes, as evidenced by decreased antioxidative enzyme activity and reduced Nrf2/HO-1 expression. Melatonin clearly reduced ER stress and promoted mitochondrial function and antioxidative processes in the presence of ox-LDL. Molecular investigation revealed that ox-LDL activated the JNK/Mff signaling pathway, and melatonin blocked this effect. These results demonstrate that ox-LDL induces ER stress and mitochondrial dysfunction and activates the JNK/Mff signaling pathway, thereby contributing to endothelial dysfunction. Moreover, melatonin inhibited JNK/Mff signaling and sustained ER homeostasis and mitochondrial function, thereby protecting endothelial cells against ox-LDL-induced damage.

Y-box binding protein 1 regulates ox-LDL mediated inflammatory responses and lipid uptake in macrophages

Xueming Cao,Na Zhu,Li Li,Yuwei Zhang,Yan Chen,Jing Zhang,Jiang Li,Chuanyu Gao

Aims Y-box protein 1 (YB1) is a key regulator of inflammatory mediators . However, the roles of YB1 in oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-induced macrophage inflammation and lipid uptake remain less understood. Thus, we explored the roles of YB1 in ox-LDL-induced macrophage inflammation and lipid uptake and its underlying molecular mechanisms. Methods An ox-LDL-induced atherosclerosis (AS) model was used in this study. Western blotting , RT-PCR, immunofluorescence, ELISA, dil-ox-LDL staining, a dual-luciferase reporter assay, RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP) and in vivo experiments were used to detect each target. Results ox-LDL downregulates YB1 expression in THP-1-derived macrophages and human monocyte-derived macrophages (hMDMs) via the NF-κB pathway. Downregulation of YB1 is facilitated by lipid uptake in macrophages, and CD36 is involved in this process. Furthermore, YB1 suppresses CD36 protein levels by directly binding to the coding sequence of the CD36 gene to promote CD36 mRNA decay but does not affect its mRNA transcription. Additionally, YB1 knockdown enhances the inflammatory response and lipid deposition via the NF-κB pathway in vivo. Conclusion ox-LDL decreases YB1 expression in macrophages, resulting in enhanced inflammatory responses by affecting NF-κB and facilitating lipid uptake by promoting scavenger receptor CD36 mRNA decay.

Azo Dye Biodecolorization Enhanced by Echinodontium taxodii Cultured with Lignin

Yuling Han,Lili Shi,Jing Meng,Hongbo Yu,Xiaoyu Zhang

Lignocellulose facilitates the fungal oxidization of recalcitrant organic pollutants through the extracellular ligninolytic enzymes induced by lignin in wood or other plant tissues. However, available information on this phenomenon is insufficient. Free radical chain reactions during lignin metabolism are important in xenobiotic removal. Thus, the effect of lignin on azo dye decolorization in vivo by Echinodontium taxodii was evaluated. In the presence of lignin, optimum decolorization percentages for Remazol Brilliant Violet 5R, Direct Red 5B, Direct Black 38, and Direct Black 22 were 91.75% (control, 65.96%), 76.89% (control, 43.78%), 43.44% (control, 17.02%), and 44.75% (control, 12.16%), respectively, in the submerged cultures. Laccase was the most important enzyme during biodecolorization. Aside from the stimulating of laccase activity, lignin might be degraded by E. taxodii, and then these degraded low-molecular-weight metabolites could act as redox mediators promoting decolorization of azo dyes. The relationship between laccase and lignin degradation was investigated through decolorization tests in vitro with purified enzyme and dozens of aromatics, which can be derivatives of lignin and can function as laccase mediators or inducers. Dyes were decolorized at triple or even higher rates in certain laccase–aromatic systems at chemical concentrations as low as 10 µM.

Effect of Ce Doping on Catalytic Performance of Cu/TiO2 for CO Oxidation

Li Chaoqun,Yang Yang,Ren Wei,Wang Jian,Zhu Tingyu,Xu Wenqing

Abstract CO is toxic and detrimental to human beings and the atmosphere. The presence of CO has become one of the important indicators for evaluating ambient air quality. Iron and steel sintering generate large amounts of flue gas emissions containing approximately 1% CO, which has become an important factor restricting the improvement of air quality in steel cities. The catalytic oxidation method is the simplest and most effective method for CO emission control. In this work, a series of Cu x Ce y /TiO 2 catalysts with different Ce doping levels were prepared by a one-step impregnation method and subsequently tested for catalytic CO oxidation. The Cu 0.5 Ce 0.5 /TiO 2 sample has the best catalytic activity under the conditions of 1% CO and 10% H 2 O. The catalysts were next characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, H 2 -TPR, XPS and in-situ DRIFTS methods. The characterization results show that Ce doping promotes the dispersion of copper species on the catalyst surface and improve the redox performance of the catalyst. The results of in-situ experiments showed that both Cu/TiO 2 and Cu 0.5 Ce 0.5 /TiO 2 catalysts followed Mars and van Krevelen mechanism, and Ce doping enhanced the adsorption and activation of oxygen, thus improving the low-temperature reaction activity of the catalysts. Urea Induces Uniform Tin Deposition for Long Cycle-Life Tin-based Redox Flow Battery

Yang Yang,Yan Xiang,Yuewen Yang,Xian Xie,Faheem Mushtaq,Ruiqin Zhang,Walid A. Daoud

Among multivalent redox flow batteries, the Zn-based redox flow battery (RFB) has the advantages of high energy density, nontoxicity, and low cost. However, the severe dendrite issue hinders its deployment. Therefore, the Sn-based RFB is reported as a prospective alternative, particularly in alkaline systems, due to its lower redox potential and four electrons transfer in redox reactions. However, the continuous growth of Sn during charge forms large Sn bulk, which increases the risk of “dead Sn” formation. By combining experiments and theoretical calculations, urea is proposed as an electrolyte additive to regulate Sn deposition on graphite felt. This is achieved through the enhanced adsorption and robust reaction of Sn(OH) 6 2− with graphite felt. Consequently, a more uniform morphology ensues, reducing “dead Sn” formation and thus improving the average discharge voltage and areal capacity. Moreover, the Columbic efficiency becomes more stable, extending the cycle life to over 420 h (>200 cycles) without deep discharge during cycling. This study demonstrates the role of urea in achieving high-performance Sn-I flow battery with long cycle life, paving the way for further development of metal-based hybrid RFBs.

Comparative study on N2O formation pathways over bulk MoO3 and MoO3-x nanosheets decorated Fe2O3-containing solid waste NH3-SCR catalysts

Yangfan Chen,Hongyan Yan,Wenxin Teng,Jiangling Li,Weizao Liu,Shan Ren,Jian Yang,Qingcai Liu

NH 3 -SCR technology with commercialized V 2 O 5 -WO 3 (MoO 3 )/TiO 2 catalysts has become the most efficient technology for the removal of NO x from coal-fired power plants. However, the weaknesses of V 2 O 5 -WO 3 (MoO 3 )/TiO 2 catalysts such as the biotoxicity of vanadium species and high cost restrict their increased applicability. Fe 2 O 3 -based NH 3 -SCR catalysts show potential in placing traditional catalysts due to their good N 2 selectivity, excellent environmentally friendly performance, high thermal stability, and low cost. In this work, low cost Fe 2 O 3 -containing solid waste was exploited as the base material for NH 3 -SCR catalyst preparing. Moreover, bulk MoO 3 and MoO 3-x nanosheets decorated Fe 2 O 3 composite NH 3 -SCR catalysts were synthesized and both revealed conspicuously improved NO x removal efficiency compared with bare-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst. However, the N 2 selectivity of these two catalysts showed significant differences. Therefore, comprehensive characterizations, NH 3 oxidation experiments, and in-situ diffusion Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments were performed to determine the N 2 O formation pathways of the above two catalysts. The redox properties were highly related to the N 2 O generated from NH 3 oxidation. Moreover, the huge difference in NH 3 and NO adsorption ability led to disparate reaction mechanisms over the two catalysts. This new understanding of the N 2 O formation mechanism has the potential to guide the rational design of improved NH 3 -SCR catalysts suffering from low N 2 selectivity.

Sarsasapogenin blocks ox-LDL-stimulated vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, migration, and invasion through suppressing STIM1 expression

Haiying Zhai,Hongqin Liu,Baoling Shang,Xu Zou

Background Atherosclerosis (AS) is a pathological vascular disorder responsible for the majority of cardiovascular deaths. Sarsasapogenin (Sar) is a natural steroidal compound which has been extensively applied to multiple human diseases due to its pharmacological properties. In the present paper, the impacts of Sar on oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL)-treated vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and its possible action mechanism were investigated. Methods Firstly, Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) estimated the viability of VSMCs following treatment with ascending doses of Sar. Then, VSMCs were treated by ox-LDL to stimulate an in vitro cell model of AS. CCK-8 and 5-Ethynyl-2’-deoxyuridine (EDU) assays were used to assess cell proliferation. Wound healing and transwell assays were applied to measure the migratory and invasive capacities, respectively. The expression of proliferation-, metastasis-, and stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1)/Orai signaling-associated proteins was measured by western blot. Results The experimental data illuminated that Sar treatment noticeably protected against ox-LDL-elicited VSMCs proliferation, migration, and invasion. Besides, Sar lowered the elevated STIM1 and Orai expression in ox-LDL-treated VSMCs. Further, STIM1 elevation partially abrogated the impacts of Sar on the proliferation, migration, and invasion of VSMCs challenged with ox-LDL. Conclusions In conclusion, Sar might reduce STIM1 expression to impede the aggressive phenotypes of ox-LDL-treated VSMCs.

Preparation of redox- and photo-responsive ferrocene- and azobenzene-based polymer films and their properties

Xia Xia,Haojie Yu,Li Wang,Zheng Deng,Kenneth J. Shea,Zain-ul-Abdin

A series of redox- and photo-responsive copolymers, poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl ferrocenecarboxylate- co -4-methacryloylamino-4′-nitroazobenzene) (P(FcEMA- co -MAAzo)s) were synthesized using free radical polymerization. The synthesized copolymers were characterized by 1 H NMR, FT-IR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) absorption studies showed redox- and photo-responsive properties of the synthesized copolymers in the solution. P(FcEMA- co -MAAzo)s films were prepared by spin-coating or drop-coating method and these films were found to be redox- and photo-responsive. The color of the prepared films could be adjusted by the redox stimulus, while UV–vis absorption properties of the prepared films could be adjusted by changing wavelength of light. It was found that these synthesized films show potential application for high density information storage.
