Highly Sensitive, Flexible, Wearable Piezoelectric Sensor by the Integration of P(VDF-TrFE)/BaTiO3 Composite Film and a-IZO TFTs

Kaiyuan Lai,Yurong Liu,Ruohe Yao,Kuiwei Geng

High sensitivity, highly integrated, low-power consumption, and highly flexible pressure sensors are essential for applications in fields such as electronic skin, smart robotics, and human-AI interaction. In this study, a highly sensitive integrated pressure sensor was prepared on a flexible PI substrate which includes a thin-film transistors (TFTs)-based amplifier with a P(VDF-TrFE)/BaTiO3 piezoelectric composite sensing unit. The sensing unit is connected to the extended gate of one In-doped ZnO (IZO) TFT, while the other IZO TFT serves as a load resistor for the amplifier. The integrated sensor can directly convert an external pressure applied to P(VDF-TrFE)/BaTiO3 composite into a voltage (or current) signal and amplify it without an additional charge amplifier. The results indicate the integrated sensor exhibits a low power consumption of 100 ~ 200 μW, a high sensitivity of 0.64 V/kPa, and a rapid response time of 20 ms. The integrated sensor can be used to detect human movements and vital signs in real time, such as finger bending and stretching, pulse, and vocal cord vibrations, suggesting that the integrated sensor has a great deal of promise for application in wearable health monitoring systems.

Modified organic polystyrene microspheres embedded into P(VDF-TrFE) with lotus-leaf microstructure enables high performance triboelectric nanogenerator

Liqin Yao,Zhao Zhang,Qi-long Zhang,Zheng Zhou,Hui Yang,Lu Chen

A lot of efforts have been devoted to enhance the outputs of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) via optimizing the friction materials in recent years. Here, the modified organic polystyrene (PS) microspheres embedded Poly[(vinylidene fluoride)-co-trifluoroethylene] P(VDF-TrFE) composites are developed to construct lotus-leaf surface microstructure and enhance the permittivity of P(VDF-TrFE). Besides, owing to the rich positively charged -NH 3 groups of the hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium-bromide (CTAB) in the solvent, the surface potential of composites is significantly improved by CTAB modified PS microspheres. Coupling of designed surface microstructure, high permittivity, and enhanced surface potential, the TENG assembled by P(VDF-TrFE) (+) and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, -) exhibits considerable outputs (the short-circuit current density and peak power density are 47.45 mA/m 2 and 7.88 W/m 2 , respectively), much higher than those of pristine P(VDF-TrFE) and unretouched PS/P(VDF-TrFE). In the applications, 413 LEDs in series can be lighted up directly by the TENG without energy storage. A smart mouse pad is also proposed to work as the self-powered sensor to detect typical mouse motions. This research provides a comprehensive solution to optimize the positive friction material in simple and feasible methods of surface/interface design and surface potential regulation.

Controllable Core–Shell BaTiO3@Carbon Nanoparticle-Enabled P(VDF-TrFE) Composites: A Cost-Effective Approach to High-Performance Piezoelectric Nanogenerators

Zheng Zhou,Zhao Zhang,Qilong Zhang,Hui Yang,Yulu Zhu,Yuanyu Wang,Lu Chen

Piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs), as a promising solution to harvest mechanical energy from ambient environment, have attracted much attention over the past decade. Here, the core–shell structured BaTiO3@Carbon (BT@C) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by a simple surface-modifying method and then used to fabricate the efficient PENGs with poly[(vinylidene fluoride)-co-trifluoroethylene] (P(VDF-TrFE)). The carbon shell with the uniform thickness of 10–15 nm can increase the content of the polar β phase in P(VDF-TrFE) and significantly enhance the interfacial polarization between BT NPs and the polymer matrix during the poling process. Out of all compositions, the 15 wt % BT@C/P(VDF-TrFE) PENG exhibited the optimal piezoelectric performance with an output voltage of ∼17 V and a maximum power of 14.3 μW under bending–releasing mode. More importantly, the PENG can also efficiently harvest other types of mechanical energy from human activities and exhibits stable output after 1500 bending–releasing cycles. When the PENG was bent and beat by bicycle spokes, a peak voltage of 16 V was generated, which can light up 12 white LEDs directly and charge the commercial capacitors. Our research provides a new strategy to fabricate flexible and efficient PENGs from a nanoscale viewpoint; it can be hopefully applied in energy-harvesting systems and wearable electric sensors.

Flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters with graphene oxide nanosheets and PZT-incorporated P(VDF-TrFE) matrix for mechanical energy harvesting

Qi Wu,Huiling Guo,Huajun Sun,Xiaofang Liu,Huiting Sui,Fang Wang

Flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) have attracted extensive interest because of their ability to transform mechanical energy into electric power. Here, PEHs were fabricated using P(VDF-TrFE)-based piezoelectric composite films containing lead zirconate titanate (PZT) powder and –OH-functionalized graphene (HOG) nanosheets (HOG-P/P). Among all composites, a high open-circuit voltage ( V oc) of approximately 50 V p-p and a maximum power density of 1.4 μW/cm 2 were obtained from a HOG-P/P PEH with 0.10 wt% HOG nanosheets and 15 wt% PZT under bending–releasing mode. Moreover, the PEH exhibited a stable voltage output after 3000 bending–releasing cycles. In addition, the PEH harvested mechanical energy from human body movements and generated an output voltage and current of 60 V and 8 μA during the finger bending–releasing process, lighting up 30 commercial white LEDs. The enhanced piezoelectric performance can be attributed to the introduction of HOG nanosheets and PZT powder. This work provides an effective strategy for improving the output performance of P(VDF-TrFE)-based PEHs.

Accelerated Osteogenesis of Heterogeneous Electric Potential Gradient on CFO/P(VDF-TrFE) Membranes

Jiamin Zhang,Xuzhao He,Suya Lin,Xiaoyi Chen,Lingqing Dong,Jun Lin,Huiming Wang,Wenjian Weng,Kui Cheng

Piezoelectric biomaterials are considered to be able to mimic the electrophysiological microenvironment of natural bone tissue, thus enhancing the bone regeneration. However, the effects of heterogeneous electric potential gradient of piezoelectric biomaterials on their osteogenic performance still remain elusive, largely because of the challenge of harassing the distribution of electric potential gradient on the surface of piezoelectric biomaterials. This study controls the heterogeneous electric potential gradient on the CoFe 2 O 4 /poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (CFO/P(VDF-TrFE)) membrane by using an alternatively positive–negative polarization processing on microscaled straight-stripe patterned indium tin oxide coated glass (ITO) electrodes. The potential gradient (Δ ζ ) on membranes can be controlled by the stripe width and polarization parameters. Interestingly, Δ ζ shows a significant influence on the cellular osteogenic potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and the bone regeneration performance in vivo. The Δ ζ of 0.672 pm/(V*µm) shows the optimal osteogenic performance both in vitro and in vivo, which can be attributed to the boost of integrins α 5 β 1 expression as well as the orientated arrangement and contractility of the cytoskeletons via mechanotransduction signaling cascades. This work therefore shows the importance of heterogeneous electric potential and provides a novel strategy to accelerate the osteogenic performances of piezoelectric biomaterials.

Differently Charged P (VDF-TrFE) Membranes Influence Osteogenesis Through Differential Immunomodulatory Function of Macrophages

Zhu Peijun,Lai Chunhua,Cheng Mingwei,He Yiheng,Xu Yan,Chen Jiahao,Zhou Zhengnan,Li Ping,Xu Shulan

A biomaterial-mediated immune response is a critical factor to determine the cell fate as well as the tissue-regenerative outcome. Although piezoelectric-membranes have attracted considerable interest in the field of guided bone regeneration thanks to their biomimetic electroactivity, the influence of their different surface-charge polarities on the immune-osteogenic microenvironment remains obscure. The present study aimed at investigating the interaction between piezoelectric poly (vinylidene fluoridetrifluoroethylene) [P (VDF-TrFE)] membranes with different surface polarities (negative or positive) and macrophage response, as well as their subsequent influence on osteogenesis from an immunomodulating perspective. Specifically, the morphology, wettability, crystal phase, piezoelectric performance, and surface potential of the synthetic P (VDF-TrFE) samples were systematically characterized. In addition, RAW 264.7 macrophages were seeded onto differently charged P (VDF-TrFE) surfaces, and the culture supernatants were used to supplement cultures of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) on the corresponding P (VDF-TrFE) surfaces. Our results revealed that oppositely charged surfaces had different abilities in modulating the macrophage-immune-osteogenic microenvironment. Negatively charged P (VDF-TrFE), characterized by the highest macrophage elongation effect, induced a switch in the phenotype of macrophages from M0 (inactivated) to M2 (anti-inflammatory), thus promoting the osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs by releasing anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. Interestingly, positively charged P (VDF-TrFE) possessed pro-inflammatory properties to induce an M1 (pro-inflammatory) macrophage-dominated reaction, without compromising the subsequent osteogenesis as expected. In conclusion, these findings highlighted the distinct modulatory effect of piezoelectric-P (VDF-TrFE) membranes on the macrophage phenotype, inflammatory reaction, and consequent immune-osteogenic microenvironment depending on their surface-charge polarity. This study provides significant insight into the design of effective immunoregulatory materials for the guided bone regeneration application.

Polarized P(VDF-TrFE) film promotes skin wound healing through controllable surface potential

Zhiyuan Zhou,Jie Wang,Jiamin Zhang,Xiyue Duan,Weiming Lin,Kui Cheng,Wenjian Weng,Zuobing Chen

Surface potential of biomaterials is found to be important for wound healing. Here, poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) films with different surface potentials and piezoelectric responses were prepared and explored for the effect of surface potential on wound healing. The crystalline state of P(VDF-TrFE) films were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), illustrated that the electric polarization will promote the crystallization of the β phase of P(VDF-TrFE), in which the content of β phase increased from 82.9 % to 86.8 % compared with the control. Then, Kelvin potential and piezoelectric coefficient d 33 were to evaluate surface potential and polarization performance. Moreover, bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption and cell culture results showed that high surface potential can promote protein adsorption as well as fibroblast proliferation and macrophage polarization. Finally, in vivo experiments indicated that high voltage polarized P(VDF-TrFE) films can generate higher dynamic potential up to 2.3 V, and promoted wound healing from the phases of inflammation, proliferation and remodeling, the wound healing rate of which was 88.8 % ± 0.8 %, significantly higher than 79.1 % ± 2.5 % and 86.4 % ± 1.8 % of blank and control. In general, this work revealed that polarized P(VDF-TrFE) films can promote wound healing, shed light on designing wound healing materials with similar properties.

Wenquan Liu,Yu Sun,B. Narsu,Liang Qiao,Jipeng Huang,Chang Q. Sun,Guiye Shan,Biao Wang

The escalating demand for energy harvesting technologies to power small wireless devices has intensified interest in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), yet challenges in energy conversion efficiency and durability persist. In this study, we present a novel core-shell BaTiO 3 @P(VDF-TrFE) nanofiber (BT@PVFT NF) structure, developed to enhance the triboelectric performance of TENGs for wearable and portable electronic applications. The BT@PVFT NF were fabricated using coaxial electrospinning , combining the high dielectric constant of BT with the ferroelectric properties of PVFT to maximize surface charge density and energy conversion efficiency. The morphological, structural, and phase characteristics of the BT@PVFT NFs were thoroughly investigated, with significant findings on the enhancement of the β-phase of PVFT through the synergistic effects of the core-shell configuration and electrospinning process . The optimized TENG demonstrated remarkable electrical output, achieving peak output voltage of 450 V and power density of 80 μW cm −2 , alongside exceptional durability over 15,500 cycles. Furthermore, the device successfully powered commercial electronics and exhibited robust mechanical energy harvesting from human motion. This work not only advances the understanding of core-shell structures in energy harvesting but also highlights the potential of the BT@PVFT NFs for self-powered sensing applications, opening new pathways for the development of energy-efficient wearable technologies .

Enhanced cellular osteogenic differentiation on CoFe2O4/P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite coatings under static magnetic field

Bolin Tang,Xiaojun Shen,Yaru Yang,Zhi Xu,Jie Yi,Yongbo Yao,Miao Cao,Yalin Zhang,Hongqin Xia

Cellular responses can be regulated and manipulated through combining stimuli-responsive biomaterial with external stimulus. In this present, the magneto-responsive CoFe 2 O 4 /P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite coatings were designed to understand cell behaviors of preosteoblasts, as well as get insight into the underlying mechanism of osteogenic differentiation under static magnetic field (SMF). CoFe 2 O 4 /P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite coatings with differential magnetic property (low, medium and high magnetization) were prepared by incorporation of different mass fraction of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles (6%, 13 %, 20 %) into P(VDF-TrFE) matrix. Cell experiments indicated that all nanocomposite coatings with the assistance of SMF could promote the cell attachment, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. Among different nanocomposite coatings, low magnetization coating (6%) showed a higher ALP activity and gene expression of Runx2, Col-I, OCN. Molecular biology assays demonstrated that the combination of nanocomposite coatings and SMF could significantly up-regulate the expression level of α2β1 integrin and p-ERK. Whereas, the addition of inhibitor U0126 down-regulated sharply the expression level of p-ERK, which indicated that cellular osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells was governed through α2β1 integrin-mediated MEK/ERK signaling pathways during CoFe 2 O 4 /P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite coatings were combined with SMF. This work provided a promising strategy to enhance cellular osteogenic differentiation through a remote-control manner, which exhibited great potential in the application of bone tissue repair and regeneration.

Towards high efficient nanodielectrics from linear ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)-g-PMMA matrix and exfoliated mica nanosheets

Jian Wang,Yunchuan Xie,Jingjing Liu,Zhicheng Zhang,Yanfeng Zhang

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) based polymer/ceramic nanocomposites for high energy density dielectrics have long been plagued by their low discharging efficiency (40–60%), which originates from the matrix with high bulk ferroelectric relaxation and the high-k ceramics with large conduction loss. In this work, a linear-like PVDF-based polymer dielectric is synthesized through grafting poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) onto main chains of poly(vinyl fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)) terpolymer via an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) process. PMMA grafted terpolymer (P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)-g-PMMA) shows linear-like dielectric characteristics accompanied with greatly enhanced discharging efficiency of ∼80% under 250 MV/m, which is over 100% higher than that of pristine terpolymer. To further improve its breakdown strength and discharging efficiency, the grafted terpolymer are then compounded with ultrasonic-exfoliated mica nanosheets ( e Mica) by solution-cast method. Thanks to the low hysteresis loss of linear-like dielectric matrix and the high insulating 2D mica nanosheets, the composite with the highest discharging efficiency of ∼78% under 250 MV/m is achieved. The maximum energy density of the optimized composite reaches 9.6 J/cm 3 , which is nearly 290% that of the pristine terpolymer. Besides, its discharging efficiency is about 74% under 450 MV/m, which is much more advantageous than the other PVDF-based polymer/ceramics composite dielectrics. This work suggests that utilizing polymer matrix with linear dielectric property and fillers with high insulating 2D structure might be a facile strategy to achieve composite dielectrics with simultaneously high energy density and high discharging efficiency.

Self-standing multiferroic P(VDF-TrFE) nanocomposite films with high flexibility and great magnetoelectric effect induced by low content ultra-fine magnetostrictive nanofibers

Bowei Liu,Rui Feng,Ling Zhou,Tong Zhou,Peng Su,Guanghui Zhao,Lijie Dong

Flexible multiferroic materials with lightweight, wearability, portability and high magnetoelectric conversion present significant potential for applications in wearable, wireless and self-powered device engineering. However, simultaneously achieving high magnetoelectric conversion and ideal flexibility remains a demanding challenge of multiferroic composite materials. Here, novel flexible magnetoelectric nanocomposite films are developed based on the self-synthesized ultra-fine magnetostrictive nanofibers and electrostrictive polymer P(VDF-TrFE). The ultra-fine magnetostrictive nanofibers have been tailored into 15 nm of average diameter by utilizing an ultra-fine polymer template ( s PPTA). This design aligns with the dimensions of P(VDF-TrFE) crystals to ensure optimal interfacial compatibility and effective stress transfer between the magnetostrictive and electrostrictive phase. Remarkably, a small amount (3 wt%) of nanofibers in the nanocomposite films enables a synergistic output effect of magnetoelectric coupling coefficient of 43.0 mV·cm −1 ·Oe −1 . The incorporation of ultra-fine and low-content nanofillers contributes to the lightweight and flexible nature of the nanocomposite films with the elongation at a break of 9 %. Moreover, the magneto-machine-electric conversion shows 7 % enhancement with a magnetic field application to verify the active effect of the magnetic field on strain response. This approach opens up a new avenue for the design and modulation of flexible magnetoelectric films and paves the way for wireless and wearable multifunctional devices.

Self-Powered Wearable Pressure Sensors with Enhanced Piezoelectric Properties of Aligned P(VDF-TrFE)/MWCNT Composites for Monitoring Human Physiological and Muscle Motion Signs

Aochen Wang,Ming Hu,Liwei Zhou,Xiaoyong Qiang

Self-powered operation, flexibility, excellent mechanical properties, and ultra-high sensitivity are highly desired properties for pressure sensors in human health monitoring and anthropomorphic robotic systems. Piezoelectric pressure sensors, with enhanced electromechanical performance to effectively distinguish multiple mechanical stimuli (including pressing, stretching, bending, and twisting), have attracted interest to precisely acquire the weak signals of the human body. In this work, we prepared a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/ multi-walled carbon nanotube (P(VDF-TrFE)/MWCNT) composite by an electrospinning process and stretched it to achieve alignment of the polymer chains. The composite membrane demonstrated excellent piezoelectricy, favorable mechanical strength, and high sensitivity. The piezoelectric coefficient d33value was approximately 50 pm/V, the Young’s modulus was ~0.986 GPa, and the sensitivity was ~540 mV/N. The resulting composite membrane was employed as a piezoelectric pressure sensor to monitor small physiological signals including pulse, breath, and small motions of muscle and joints such as swallowing, chewing, and finger and wrist movements. Moderate doping with carbon nanotubes had a positive impact on the formation of the β phase of the piezoelectric device, and the piezoelectric pressure sensor has the potential for application in health care systems and smart wearable devices.Keywords:self-powered electronics;piezoelectric pressure sensor;P(VDF-TrFE);MWCNTs;electrospinning;wearable biomedical devices
