Yibo Liu,Chao Jia,Han Zhang,Haiyang Wang,Pan Li,Luna Jia,Feng Wang,Pengfei Zhu,Hao Wang,Lu Yu,Feipeng Wang,Lingxiao Wang,Xin Zhang,You Sun,Bo Li

Particulate matter of 0.3 μm in diameter (PM0.3) poses a serious threat to the environment and human beings. Ultrathin and -light nanofibrous filters with excellent filtration properties can significantly prevent the detrimental effects of these particles. Here, we develop free-standing polyamide PA-66 ultrafine nanofiber papers for PM0.3 filtration using effective and scalable blow and electro-blow spinning techniques. The smallest average fiber diameter is 61.7 nm, which is 2–3 orders of magnitude smaller than that of conventional textiles. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) nonwovens are selected to fabricate free-standing nanofiber papers of various polymers, including polyamide, poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(vinylpyrrolidone), and poly(ethylene oxide) owing to the smooth surfaces of the nonwovens. This underlying principle can be used to create similar free-standing nanofiber papers from other commodity polymers in the future. Mechanisms of capturing particulate matter with different nanofiber morphologies are discussed. Salt and oil particulates are used to characterize the filtration properties. PA-66 papers are promising reusable filters owing to their mechanical particle-capture mechanism. The blow-spun PA-66 papers show filtration performance of 98.75% efficiency and a pressure drop of 125.44 Pa owing to the “slip” effect caused by the ultrasmall diameter. In the electro-blow spinning process, a supplementary voltage supply is conducive to separating nanofiber bundles into random-oriented nanofibers. Electro-blown spun papers possess an ultrahigh efficiency of 99.99% with a reduced areal density of 0.9 g m–2. These PA-66 papers can be used in a variety of applications, such as reusable personal protective equipment, industrial waste gas treatment, and central ventilation purification systems.

Biomass-based renewable, eco-friendly nanofiber membrane: Large-scale fabrication and application in PM0.3 capture and oily wastewater purification

Yun Li,Longyin Wan,Jialiang Geng,Zunyuan Wang,Guoxin Wang,Xiaolan Qiao,Ding Yuan,Zhihui Zhao,Weichao Chen

Biomass-based poly (trimethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PTF) was synthesized by the simple and low-cost direct esterification method. The high number-average molecular weight (M n ) of about 39.6 kDa was achieved for PTF with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 2.0, which was suitable for spinning. The electrospun PTF nanofiber membranes were fabricated firstly and displayed adjustable diameters, excellent mechanical properties (lifting 550 g weight, foldability) and large-scale preparation potential (area of 100 cm × 50 cm). More impressively, high initial surface potential (13.5 kV) was found for the electrospun in-suit electret membranes, which facilitated the capture of ultrafine PM particles. Subsequently, the PTF membrane showed exceptional particle capture capability with a filtration performance of 99.96 %, low pressure drops of 78 Pa, and a satisfactory quality factor of 0.1 Pa −1 . PTF filters also demonstrated long-term service capability for purifying high PM 2.5 concentration smoke (15 cycles, 55 min), and could be flexibly introduced into various practical scenarios. Additionally, based on the selective oil/water wettability of PTF membranes, which showed outstanding separation effects of oily wastewater(>99.88 %, 15 cycles). Therefore, the development and application of the PTF nanofibers provided a sustainable alternative for separation/purification and various fields in the future.

Bacterial cellulose aerogel membrane with ultrafine nanofiber network for efficient PM0.3 filtration

Xin Yang,Yinghui Liu,Jili Wang,Chao Ma,Yuxiang Du,Dan Liu,Rui Fu,Huazheng Sai

Particulate matter (PM) pollution poses a significant threat to public health, and there is an urgent demand for air filters that can efficiently remove PM. However, achieving high filtration efficiency is often accompanied by a significant increase in air resistance. This efficiency–resistance trade-off presents a major challenge for advancing high-performance filtration membranes. Herein, biodegradable bacterial cellulose aerogel membranes were engineered through freeze-casting technology, utilizing ultra-fine nanofibers (20-30 nm in diameter) with significantly reduced fiber dimensions compared with existing filters, thereby achieving an optimal efficiency–resistance balance in PM filtration. The filter achieves ultra-high PM 0.3 filtration efficiency (>99.99%) and an ultralow pressure drop of only 22 Pa at an airflow rate of 8 L min −1 , corresponding to normal human breathing conditions. Furthermore, a rigid silica layer uniformly coated onto the surface of cellulose nanofibers by chemical vapor deposition technology endowed them excellent elasticity and moisture resistance. Importantly, it can completely decompose in composted soil within 6 weeks. This study provides guidance for the industrial production of biodegradable and moisture-resistant high-performance nanofiber air filters.

Highly Transparent Nanofibrous Membranes Used as Transparent Masks for Efficient PM0.3 Removal

Chao Wang,Na Meng,Aijaz Ahmed Babar,Xiaobao Gong,Gaohui Liu,Xianfeng Wang,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Currently, the quest for highly transparent and flexible fibrous membranes with robust mechanical characteristics, high breathability, and good filtration performance is rapidly rising because of their potential use in the fields of electronics, energy, environment, medical, and health. However, it is still an extremely challenging task to realize transparent fibrous membranes due to serious surface light reflection and internal light scattering. Here, we report the design and development of a simple and effective topological structure to create porous, breathable, and high visible light transmitting fibrous membranes (HLTFMs). The resultant HLTFMs exhibit good optical performance (up to 90% transmittance) and high porosities (>80%). The formation of such useful structure with high light transmittance has been revealed by electric field simulation, and the mechanism of fibrous membrane structure to achieve high light transmittance has been proposed. Moreover, transparent masks have been prepared to evaluate the filtration performance and analyze their feasibility to meet requirement of facial recognition systems. The prepared masks display high transparency (>80%), low pressure drop (<100 Pa) and high filtration efficiency (>90%). Furthermore, the person wearing this mask can be successfully identified by facial recognition systems. Therefore, this work provides an idea for the development of transparent, breathable, and high-performance fibrous membranes.

Low viscosity of spinning liquid to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid ultrafine nanofiber membrane for high-efficiency filtration application

Ruixiang Xu,Jianyong Feng,Lingxiao Zhang,Shengquan Li

Particulate matter (PM) pollution is a global problem. It is of great significance to develop an advanced PM 0.3 air filter. In this paper, the factors affecting the fiber diameter in spinning are discussed, and a kind of organic-inorganic hybrid ultrafine nano-fiber membrane with high-efficiency and low-pressure drop is prepared via utilizing low viscosity electrostatic spinning solutions. The viscosity of the spinning solution is diminished via reducing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) mass fraction and adding hydrophobic silica (SiO 2 ). In this way, the mean fiber diameter of the hybrid nanofiber membrane = 53.08 nm, mean pore size = 0.43 μm, and the surface potential is as high as 17.53 kV. Hence, the filtration efficiency of PM 0.3 is as high as 99.997 %, and air pressure is comparatively low (only 114.46 Pa). In conclusion, PVDF-SiO 2 fiber membrane can effectively accomplish high-efficient and low-pressure air filtration and can be widely used in various fields such as various masks and protective clothing.

Deep trapped bipolar heterocharges enable electret nanofibrous membranes for high-efficiency PM0.3 filtration

Hanchao Gao,Jiaxin Li,Huiming Fu,Kai Zhang,Shuxia Duan,Hong Zhao,Ziqi Zheng,Mengyang Zhou,Zhaopeng Xia,Yong Liu

Recently frequent global pandemic outbreak triggers the demand of high-efficiency aerosol filtration materials. Most of traditional electret air filters can hardly achieve high efficiency (>99.99 %) due to limited charge density and inappropriate charge distribution. The influence mechanism of nanofibers bipolar heterocharge configuration on electrostatic capture of airborne particles is still confusing. Herein, a novel strategy to create high-efficiency air filters based on electret nanofibrous membranes with deep trapped heterocharge is reported. Space charges and dipole charges with opposite polarity are formed in electrospun membranes composed of different polymers under in-situ charge injection and electric poling during electrospinning. Nanoscale spatial surface potential mapping on individual nanofiber characterized by Kelvin probe force microscopy demonstrates bipolar heterocharge distribution. Numerical simulation shows that fiber heterocharge distribution endows the electret membrane with greater electrostatic field intensity gradient, resulting in stronger electrostatic force between nanofibers and airborne particles. With bipolar heterocharge configuration and bimodal fiber diameter distribution, the nanofibrous membranes exhibit high-efficiency low-resistance filtration property against 0.3 μm NaCl particles (99.994 %, 97.4 Pa) at 5.3 cm s −1 . Furthermore, benefiting from charges with deep trap energy of 1.12 eV, the membranes still maintain 99.972 % filtration efficiency after 40 h exposure in 95 % relatively humidity. The prepared membranes brings new insight in the design of high-efficiency and long-term stability air filtration materials for public health precaution. This study not only reveals influence mechanism of nanofibers heterocharge distribution on electrostatic attraction, but also provides useful guidance for fiber charge configuration design to improve aerosol filtration performance of electret filters.

Multifunctional Micro/Nano-Scale Nonwoven With Antibacterial Properties for Efficient Capture of PM0.3

Teng Ma,Yaxin An,Zengliang Wen,Jiaxin Zhang,Dandan Lian,Jianjun Lu,Hua Wang

This study innovatively used polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a multifunctional modifier to prepare nano-zinc oxide and polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (Nano ZnO/PHMG) hybrid melt-blown antibacterial composite materials by twin-screw blending. PEG overcame traditional additives' single-function limitation, achieving dual structural regulation and antibacterial enhancement. PEG rheological properties were modulated to produce multistage fiber structures, improving filtration performance, while simultaneously optimizing antibacterial component distribution through its water solubility. Systematic experiments revealed how PEG-regulated local viscosity affected multistage fiber formation and pore distribution, directly impacting filtration performance. At 12% PEG loading (ABA-PP-12PEG), optimal comprehensive performance was demonstrated: 77.45% filtration efficiency (153.5% increased) with 34.0% lower resistance (11.28 Pa). Post-treatment further enhanced performance to 80.06% efficiency and 10.68 Pa resistance. Antibacterial rates surged 6.7-fold from 1.78 to 12.01.

Semi-transparent and eco-friendly face masks for PM0.3 filtration via biomimetic-fractal nanofibers

Shao Zungui,Liu Yongkui,Huo Shikang,Zhong Shuncong,Zhang Qiukun,Chen Jianxiong,Chen Hui,Wang Bing,Xu Zhanwen,Chang Yuanhong,Zheng Gaofeng,Lin Liwei

To address the need for sustainable high-performance face masks, we demonstrate a strategy that utilizes zein for efficient nanofabrication. An electrospinning process controllably splits the fluid jet, allowing for the creation of face masks composed of fine, fractal-like nanofibers without the need for impurity excipients. This process, enabled by an dipole-force-induced interfacial fluctuation mechanism that we identified, results in face masks that achieve exceptional air filtration performance, surpassing that of commercial N95 masks, while reducing both weight and thickness by half. The significant reduction in material use grants the face masks high optical transparency, facilitating unobstructed facial recognition. Crucially, the pure zein composition allows for the reprocessing of the face masks, contributing to further resource conservation. This work provides a simple, eco-friendly solution for advanced personal protection and points the way toward sustainable wearable devices.

Implantation of web-like cellulose nanofibrils on electrospun fibrous membrane for boosting filtration performance

Yuhang Yang,Xinwang Cao,Jinyou Lin

Air pollution such as particulate matter is always a serious threat to public health, thus many disposable and degradable air filters were designed to deal with this severe challenge avoiding the secondary pollution after discarding. Herein, inspired by the natural spider web structure, a hierarchical porous composite fibrous membrane containing web-like cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) was developed. The implanted porous CNF membranes with web-like among the inter-fiber voids of electrospun poly(ethylene- co -viny alcohol) fibrous membrane were realized via a layer-by-layer (LBL) method followed by an elevated-temperature drying, which exhibit a smaller diameter with one or two orders of magnitude reduction comparing with the substrate fibers. The morphology of implanted CNF membranes can be regulated by changing the CNF dispersion concentration, PH, solution composition as well as the LBL times. The addition of a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to the CNF solution can efficiently facilitate the implantation of web-like CNF on substrate, resulting in both improvements on the mechanical properties and filtration capacity. The result shows that the implanted web-like CNF of as-prepared composite membrane can enhance the PM 0.3 capture ability (reaching 96.8 %) while not surge its pressure drop (225.7 Pa) exceeding N95 standard. This work presents a new design and fabrication of CNF-based filter materials directly without using freeze drying, which can not only provide a fully or partially biodegradable air filter but also give encouragement to explore new filters efficiently.

Superefficient PM0.3 filtration and high-selectivity CO2 adsorption by MOF-activated poly(lactic acid) nanofibers

Li-Ning Dong,Cunmin Wang,Le Bao,Kun Yu,Yuzhen Hou,Xinjian He,Mengbao Fan,Shenghui Zhang,Shu-Gui Yang,Jiefeng Gao,Huan Xu

Biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) alleviate plastic pollution and attract attention in particulate matter (PM) filtration. However, they lack gas selectivity, and their poor electroactivity coupled with rapid charge dissipation leads to unstable PM filtration efficiency, which hampers their further development. Herein, we employed a microwave-assisted method to fabricate high-selectivity active nanocrystals (HSANs), and integrated them into PLA NFMs via a combined electrospinning-electrospray strategy, yielding HSA-PLA NFMs with a hierarchical porous structure. With uniform HSANs anchoring (3, 6 and 9 wt%), the obtained HSA-PLA NFMs showed increased surface potential (up to 8.3 kV), dielectric constant (1.71) and porosity (95.6 %). They exhibited excellent CO 2 adsorption and HSA-PLA9 reached 1.9 mmol·g −1 at 273.15 K/1.0 bar. Its CO 2 /N 2 selectivity was confirmed by IAST/breakthrough tests and the mechanism analyzed via three isothermal models. Moreover, endowed with pronounced activity and optimized morphology, HSA-PLA NFMs exhibited PM 2.5 and PM 0.3 filtration efficiencies of 99.7 % and 99.3 % at 85 L/min, remarkably outperforming Pure PLA (only 84.9 % and 83.9 %). This strategy integrates CO 2 adsorption and PM filtration, thereby facilitating the development of eco-friendly multifunctional permselective membranes for simultaneous purification.

Bioinspired Honeycomb-Structured Nanofibrous Membranes with High Transparency and Excellent Breathability for High-Efficiency PM0.3 Capture

Yuan Tian,Xinmiao Wang,Jinhui Wu,Jiancheng Qi

Particulate matter (PM) pollution has become a major public health concern. Particularly, PM0.3in the air can cause significant damage to the human respiratory system. However, traditional air filtration materials, due to their limited protective functions, are facing challenges such as poor environmental adaptability, low transparency, and difficulties in balancing filtration efficiency with pressure drop. Inspired by the honeycomb structures and transparent dragonfly wings, this study successfully fabricated a bioinspired honeycomb-structured nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) using template-assisted electrospinning. By optimizing the mesh size of receiver, a directional distribution of the electric field was established on the receiver, promoting the simultaneous concentrated ordered stacking and sparse random orientation of fine-diameter nanofibers. This synergistic strategy of structural optimization and electric field modulation enables NFMs to achieve an optimal balance between filtration efficiency, pressure drop, environmental adaptability and transparency. Utilizing filtration mechanisms involving Brownian diffusion, electrostatic adsorption and physical interception, the honeycomb-structured NFMs achieved a filtration efficiency of over 98.51% for PM0.3, with a pressure drop of only 34 Pa, whilst maintaining high transparency (85%) and high air permeability (130.8 mm/s). This bioinspired honeycomb-structured NFMs demonstrates broad application prospects in the field of air purification and offers novel insights for the development of multifunctional air filtration materials.

Electrospun Nanocomposite Fibrous Membranes for Sustainable Face Mask Based on Triboelectric Nanogenerator with High Air Filtration Efficiency

Yang Yue,Yang Yuchen,Huang Jianying,Li Shuhui,Meng Zheyi,Cai Weilong,Lai Yuekun

Abstract Air pollution caused by the rapid development of industry has always been a great issue to the environment and human being’s health. However, the efficient and persistent filtration to PM 0.3 remains a great challenge. Herein, a self-powered filter with micro–nano composite structure composed of polybutanediol succinate (PBS) nanofiber membrane and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber/polystyrene (PS) microfiber hybrid mats was prepared by electrospinning. The balance between pressure drop and filtration efficiency was achieved through the combination of PAN and PS. In addition, an arched TENG structure was created using the PAN nanofiber/PS microfiber composite mat and PBS fiber membrane. Driven by respiration, the two fiber membranes with large difference in electronegativity achieved contact friction charging cycles. The open-circuit voltage of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can reach to about 8 V, and thus the high filtration efficiency for particles was achieved by the electrostatic capturing. After contact charging, the filtration efficiency of the fiber membrane for PM 0.3 can reach more than 98% in harsh environments with a PM 2.5 mass concentration of 23,000 µg/m 3 , and the pressure drop is about 50 Pa, which doesn’t affect people’s normal breathing. Meanwhile, the TENG can realize self-powered supply by continuously contacting and separating the fiber membrane driven by respiration, which can ensure the long-term stability of filtration efficiency. The filter mask can maintain a high filtration efficiency (99.4%) of PM 0.3 for 48 consecutive hours in daily environments. Graphical abstract
