Crystal-phase-dependent metal-support interaction in Ru/TiO2 catalysts for low-temperature oxidation

Wei Tan,Xiaoyang Zhu,Yirui Yang,Bifeng Zhang,Xuan Tang,Xiaoyu Li,Kailong Ye,Shaohua Xie,Yanhui Ao,Fudong Liu,Lin Dong

Understanding crystal-phase effects in oxide-supported metal catalysts is critical for designing efficient oxidation catalysts. Here, Ru catalysts supported on anatase and rutile titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) were evaluated for the low-temperature catalytic oxidation of representative air pollutants, including propane (C 3 H 8 ), propylene (C 3 H 6 ), carbon monoxide (CO), and ammonia (NH 3 ). Rutile TiO 2 significantly enhances oxidation activity over anatase TiO 2 across all probe molecules. Systematic characterizations reveal that lattice matching between RuO 2 and rutile TiO 2 strengthens the metal-support interaction, promoting high dispersion of Ru species and stabilizing active sites. The highly dispersed Ru species on rutile TiO 2 exhibit superior low-temperature redox properties, directly correlating with enhanced catalytic oxidation performance. In contrast, weaker interaction on anatase TiO 2 results in lower dispersion and reduced activity. These results establish crystal-phase-dependent metal-support interactions as a key factor governing low-temperature oxidation in Ru/TiO 2 catalysts and provide guidance for designing oxide-supported noble metal catalysts for air pollutant abatement.

Boosting Hydrogenation via NIR-Light-Controlled Metal-Support Interactions over Structurally Modulated Ru/TiO2

Jingyao Fan,Xiaoyan Yin,Yujie Hao,Bo Cai,Yang Lv,Zechang Wei,Dalei Wang,Hong Lei,Jianchun Jiang,Kui Wang

Abstract The modulation of metal–support interaction (MSI) could provide exciting catalytic performance for the heterogeneous catalyst. Herein, we report a novel and fast strategy to controllably modulate the physicochemical structure of supports through NIR laser irradiation and then reconstruct the interface between the metal site and support. The abundant oxygen vacancies, tunable anatase-rutile phases, and unique surface properties of TiO2 supports can be formed by laser irradiation in 3 s. It is worth mentioning that the structure and properties of TiO2 supports can be controllably modulated by controlling the intensity of laser irradiation, thereby tuning the MSI between active Ru sites and TiO2 supports to promote the catalytic performance of Ru/TiO2 catalysts. Specifically, the optimized interfacial activity of the Ru/TiO2 catalyst would exhibit excellent electron/mass transfer, which facilitates the adsorption and activation of H-donor (alcohols) and ethyl levulinate (EL), thereby improving the EL catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) to γ-valerolactone (GVL), achieving 95% GVL yield, 96% EL conversion, and 99.0% GVL selectivity under mild conditions (150 °C, 12 h, 2-PrOH as H-donor). This research provides an innovative approach for fast modulation of support to tune the MSI, thus enhancing the catalytic activity of catalysts.

Designing a Ru/TiO2 Catalyst with Ru Flat Island for Hydrogenation of Aromatic Compounds

Jingrong Li,Ying Wang,Tingting Xiao,Xinluona Su,Haiyang Cheng,Fengyu Zhao

Hydrogenation of aromatic molecules is a crucial industrial process that has been extensively employed in the synthesis of fundamental chemicals. In this work, the hydrogenation of bisphenol A (BPA) was studied over a kind of Ru/TiO2 catalyst. The catalytic activity of Ru/TiO2 was adjusted via manipulation of the metal–support interaction (MSI) by thermal treatment. The Ru/TiO2 exhibited a volcano-shaped dependence on calcination temperature, with the highest activity presented at 300 °C for the hydrogenation of BPA at mild conditions, produced 4,4′-isopropylidenedicyclohexanol (HBPA) with a yield of 99% at 80 °C, 4 MPa H2. The MSI could be adjusted by varying the calcination temperature, and flat Ru islands were formed at elevated temperatures, which facilitate the adsorption of the benzene ring of BPA. However, small-sized and electron-deficient Ru species prefer to adsorb H2. The Ru/TiO2-300 catalyst contains an appropriate composition of Ru nanoparticles and Ru flat islands, effectively balancing the competitive adsorption of H2 and BPA molecules, and thus exhibits high catalytic performance. Moreover, the Ru/TiO2-300 catalyst is highly efficient for a variety of aromatic compounds, producing the desired products selectively under mild conditions. Furthermore, it presented high stability without any loss in activity after 10 recycles. This work developed an efficient catalyst for the hydrogenation of aromatic compounds, and the insights into the catalytic mechanism will provide useful information to researchers in wide fields.

FeMo modified Ru@TiO2 with ultralow Ru loading towards efficient degradation of methylene blue

Qinrui Sun,Ning Wang,Guihua Liu,Jingde Li,Xiaohang Du,Shujuan Sun

Dimensionally stable RuO 2 -based anodes have achieved excellent performance in the field of electrochemical treatment of wastewater, however, the high price of Ru hinders its industrial application. Herein, TiO 2 nanotubes-supported RuO 2 with ultralow Ru loading (0.34 wt%) and trace Fe and Mo doping (RuFeMo@TiO 2 ) was prepared as anode for efficient degradation of methylene blue. It shows that Fe and Mo doping reduce the oxidation state of Ru (Ru n+ , n < 4). In addition, the potential electroactive sites of the electrodes are effectively enhanced by Mo doping. While the Fe doping is found to improve the generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide anion ( O 2 − ), which are the dominant oxidants for the degradation of methylene blue. In result, the RuFeMo@TiO 2 catalyst exhibits high performance towards methylene blue degradation of 97.5 % within 2 hours. It shows that the cooperation of trace transition metals enables efficient degradation of organic dye with ultralow-loaded Ru electrocatalyst, implying a promising application in wastewater treatment.

Efficient catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic compounds and bio-oil over highly dispersed Ru/TiO2

Riyang Shu,Biqin Lin,Jingtao Zhang,Chao Wang,Zhi Yang,Ying Chen

Upgrading of bio-oils to value-added products through simple and cost-efficient catalytic routes is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, we prepared a highly dispersed 2 wt% Ru/TiO 2 catalyst using a simple and novel photochemical method at room temperature . The synthetic catalyst exhibited an efficient performance on the HDO of phenolic compounds and real bio-oil, owing to its high Ru dispersion. Guaiacol could be converted into cyclohexane with 91.3% selectivity at 260 °C under 1 MPa H 2 atmosphere. Other typical phenolic monomers (phenol, anisole , etc.) and dimers (α-O-4, 4-O-4, etc.) were transformed into cycloalkanes with most yield close to 100%. Results showed that the cleavage of ether bonds and the HDO step can be realized in one pot. This catalytic system was also effective on the upgrade of bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of cotton straw. A upgraded product composed of 32.4% hydrocarbons and 57.6% alkylphenols was achieved at 280 °C, which can be used as fuels and chemicals respectively. The enhanced reaction temperature (300 °C) enabled hydrocarbon contents increased to 41.4%, leaving the other oxygenated compounds only 4.2%. This work provides a promising reference for the valorization of raw bio-oil.

The effect of TiO2 crystal phase on CH3Br catalytic combustion over Ru/TiO2 catalyst

L. Lv,S. Wang,Z. Zhang,L. Wang,P. He

Supported Ru catalysts over TiO 2 with various crystal phases were prepared, which involved rutile, anatase, and their mixed phase. And their catalytic activities for CH 3 Br complete oxidation were investigated. Results showed Ru/TiO 2-700-4 that TiO 2-700-4 is sourced from anatase TiO 2 calcined at 700 °C for 4 h is the most active catalyst among these catalysts. The content of rutile phase on the surface is lower than the bulk. Strong metal support interaction occurs owing to lower lattice mismatch between RuO 2 and rutile TiO 2 . It was further verified by H 2 -temperature programmed reduction, ultraviolet-Raman and transmission electron microscopy . Especially mixed-phase TiO 2 is more conductive to higher dispersion of RuO 2 than pure phase TiO 2 , which is easier to form epitaxial growth . The catalytic activity for CH 3 Br complete oxidation was not in exact accord with the dispersion of Ru. It is possibly attributed to the combination of arguably favorable physico-chemical properties of more Ru active sites, electron transfer , and appropriate surface acidity. At the low reaction temperature, more Ru active sites are beneficial for the total oxidation of CH 3 Br. With the increase of temperature, higher activity is prone to strong surface acidity and electron transfer, as was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectra and NH 3 -temperature programmed desorption analysis.

Abatement of dichloromethane with high selectivity over defect-rich MOF-derived Ru/TiO2 catalysts

Shaohua Chai,Shuangde Li,Le Zhang,Guijun Fan,Linfeng Nie,Xin Zhou,Wuxinchen Yang,Weiman Li,Yunfa Chen

The regulation of oxygen vacancies and Ru species using metal–organic frameworks was synergically adopted in a rational design to upgrade Ru/TiO2 catalysts, which are highly active for the catalytic oxidation of dichloromethane (DCM) with less undesired byproducts. In this work, Ru/M-TiO2 and Ru/N-TiO2 catalysts were synthesized by the pyrolysis of MIL-125 and NH2-MIL-125 incorporated with Ru, the existence of Ru nanoclusters and nanoparticles was detected by XAFS, respectively, and the catalytic performance was analyzed comprehensively. Complete oxidation of DCM was obtained at ∼290 °C over Ru/M-TiO2 and Ru/N-TiO2 catalysts, while Ru/N-TiO2 showed quite less monochloromethane (MCM) and higher CO2 yields, and better dechlorination capacity in oxidation. The distinction comes down to that the easier desorption of chlorine could be achieved over Ru4+ which act as the main activated adsorption sites for DCM in Ru/N-TiO2, compared to oxygen vacancies that serve as the main dissociation sites in Ru/M-TiO2. Additionally, Ru/N-TiO2 exhibited superior stability and excellent resilience in moisture. An in situ DRIFTS experiment further indicated the different DCM catalytic degradation process as well as the reaction mechanism over the as-prepared catalysts.

Boosting CO2 methanation activity on Ru/TiO2 catalysts by exposing (001) facets of anatase TiO2

Shanshan Chai,Yong Men,Jinguo Wang,Shuang Liu,Qiaoling Song,Wei An,Gunther Kolb

Catalytic reduction of CO 2 to methane has been recognized as one of the most important strategic reactions to produce highly valuable chemicals and for storage of renewable energy (power-to-gas). This study demonstrates a crystal facet-dependent catalytic reduction of CO 2 to CH 4 on ruthenium nanoparticles deposited over TiO 2 nanocrystal with exposed (001) and (101) facets. Compared with TiO 2 (101) nanocrystal with the same Ru loading, Ru nanoparticles supported by TiO 2 (001) exhibited a highly enhanced CO 2 conversion rate and significantly improved methanation reactivity, along with a considerable durability. The physicochemical properties of the samples were characterized by HR-TEM, XRD, BET, FT-IR, UV–vis, Raman, ICP, and temperature-programmed reaction with CO 2 , and CO 2 + H 2 . In view of the difference in catalytic activity and the physicochemical properties of the supported Ru/TiO 2 catalysts, the results uncovered that the nature of the catalyst support of Ru/TiO 2 strongly affected the dispersion of Ru species and the synergistic effect between Ru and underlying TiO 2 supporting materials due to the strong metal-support interaction, and thus affected their capability to activate CO 2 and determined the catalytic activity for CO 2 methanation. Our work demonstrated the important role of the exposed crystal facets of the underlying support and the resulting Ru particle which had a large effect on CO 2 methanation.

Enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of Ru/TiO2-x via oxygen vacancy-assisted hydrogen spillover process

Fan Yang,Lulu Zhang,Feifei Li,Zhipeng Zhang,Luyao Cui,Rui Li,Caimei Fan,Jianxin Liu

Hydrogen spillover effects will significantly improve the activity of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), while their introduction and optimization require the construction of an excellent metal/support structure. In this study, we have synthesized Ru/TiO 2-x catalysts with controlled oxygen vacancy (OVs) concentrations using a simple one-pot solvothermal method . The results show that Ru/TiO 2-x3 with the optimal OVs concentration exhibits an unprecedentedly high H 2 evolution rate of 13604 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which was 45.7 and 2.2 times higher than that of TiO 2-x (298 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and Ru/TiO 2 (6081 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ). Controlled experiments, detailed characterizations, and theoretical calculations have revealed that the introduction of OVs on the carrier contributes to the hydrogen spillover effect in the metal/support system photocatalyst and that the process of hydrogen spillover in this system can be optimized by modulating the OVs concentration. This study proposes a strategy to decrease the energy barrier of hydrogen spillover and enhance photocatalytic HER activity. Moreover, it investigates the effect of OVs concentration on the hydrogen spillover effect in the photocatalytic metal/supports system.

Reactive interfacial oxygen vacancies in Ru/TiO2 for efficient reductive amination of bio-based carbonyl compounds

Shanhui Zhu,Ruiqi Wu,Xiaoming Li,Mei Dong,Weibin Fan

Reductive amination of carbonyl compounds such as biomass-based furfural to valuable primary amines is of great importance. However, it often suffers from low efficiency and moderate amine yield. In this work, Ru-loaded TiO 2 nanosheets (NS) enabled stable and efficient conversion of furfural to furfurylamine (FAN), with 97.0 % yield and very low apparent activation energy (20.3 kJ/mol). XPS, EPR and Raman spectra reveal presence of abundant interfacial oxygen vacancies on Ru/TiO 2 -NS, and the intrinsic activity of various Ru/TiO 2 linearly increased with their oxygen vacancy concentration. DFT calculation confirms that oxygen vacancies induce to generate coordinatively unsaturated Ru species, which enhances activation of key intermediate imine. The activation energy of FCH 2 NH (F, furan group) hydrogenation to FAN has been remarkably decreased from 1.07 eV to 0.82 eV on Ru/TiO 2 -NS. Our results illustrate the potential of utilizing interfacial oxygen vacancy sites in enhancement of reaction performance for biomass amination.

Ru/TiO2 Catalysts with Size-Dependent Metal/Support Interaction for Tunable Reactivity in Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Yaru Zhang,Xiong Su,Lin Li,Haifeng Qi,Chongya Yang,Wei Liu,Xiaoli Pan,Xiaoyan Liu,Xiaofeng Yang,Yanqiang Huang,Tao Zhang

The Ru/TiO2 catalyst serves as a representative metal/support interaction system with tunable reactivity in catalytic processes. Herein, by varying the metal loadings of Ru from 0.5 to 4 wt % to regulate the size of Ru on support, the catalytic performances of Ru/TiO2 catalysts in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) can be further refined. An improved FTS activity is acquired when metal size increases, while long carbon-chain products (C5+ hydrocarbons) prefer to be generated from the small-sized Ru catalyst. With intensive characterizations, it is indicated that the coating of TiOx on Ru greatly depends on the size of Ru, with the TiOx overlayer being enhanced on small Ru metal particles. This size-dependent metal/support interaction on Ru/TiOx therefore leads to a varied reduction degree of Ru, which possesses an alterable capability toward CHx transformation on Ru. As a result, the small-sized Ru/TiOx catalyst shows a preference toward the chain growth in FTS by suppressing the competitive methanation on Ru/TiOx. Our results demonstrate that the size-dependent metal/support interaction plays an important role on determining the catalytic performance of Ru/TiOx in FTS, and it can be used as an effective method to tune the reactivity of metal nanoparticles in catalytic processes.

Engineering the geometric and electronic structure of Ru via Ru–TiO2 interaction for enhanced selective hydrogenation

Qiang Zhou,Zijiang Zhao,Zihao Yao,Zhongzhe Wei,Songtao Huang,Fangjun Shao,Aiyuan Li,Jianguo Wang

Modulation of the metal–support interaction plays a key role in many important chemical reactions. Here, by adjusting the reduction method of the catalyst and introducing oxygen vacancies in TiO2 to regulate the interaction between Ru and TiO2, four supported Ru nanocatalysts with different encapsulation degrees and electronic structures were obtained. Ru nanoparticles (NPs) partially encapsulated by TiO2 can achieve the selective hydrogenation of 6-chloroquinoline even at room temperature, with a TOF of 12 h−1. Catalytic characterization and DFT calculations indicated that partially encapsulated Ru NPs not only provided active sites for H2 dissociation, but also reduced the probability of Ru NPs being poisoned. Meanwhile, the oxygen vacancies on the surface of TiO2 can adsorb 6-chloroquinoline molecules and provide additional active sites for hydrogenation via hydrogen spillover. Moreover, the enhanced electron transfer from oxygen-deficient TiO2 to Ru made Ru electron-rich, which repelled C–Cl bonds and effectively prevented the production of dechlorination products.
