Under the leaching effect of rainwater, landfill sites will produce leachate containing high concentrations of harmful pollutants such as ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), which requires effective purification before discharge. Although electrochemical oxidation had been widely studied, its high energy consumption limited its application. For this purpose, this study developed a self-powered hybrid system that coupled Ti/SnO 2 -Sb 2 O 3 anode and a stainless-steel cathode with the triboelectric-electromagnetic generator (TENG-EMG), which achieved efficient electrocatalytic degradation of NH 4 + -N in landfill leachate without relying on external power sources. Through parameter optimization, the system achieved the optimal degradation rate constant of 0.289 min −1 under the conditions of a rotor speed of 90 r/min, NH 4 + -N concentration of 10 mg/L, pH 7, electrode spacing of 0.9 cm, and 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte. Mechanism studies demonstrated that the coupled system can effectively promote the generation of singlet oxygen (· 1 O 2 ), hydroxyl radicals (·OH), and active chlorine radicals (·Cl/·ClO), thereby driving the degradation of NH 4 + -N. This synergistic strategy significantly enhances the efficiency of environmental energy harvesting and electrocatalysis, providing an innovative solution for self-powered treatment of landfill leachate.

Inspired by the extraordinary functionality of biological systems that assemble anisotropic nanostructures, there is growing interest in designing multiscale ordered materials to modulate bio-based micro- and nanoscale assemblies for high performance and exceptional functionality. Current strategies for magnetic field-induced alignment of cellulose nanofibers face limitations, often relying on ultra-high magnetic fields or yielding poor orientation with microspherical magnetic particles. This study proposes an ordered assembly of cellulose nanofibers decorated with magnetic nanorods, induced under low magnetic fields. The resulting cellulose films exhibit an orientation parameter greater than 0.8. It demonstrates that the mechanism behind the magnetic field-induced alignment of magnetic nanorods with cellulose nanofibers results from a combination of magnetic torque-induced alignment of the rods and shear orientation driven by radial flow. This highly aligned, magnetically flexible, multiresponsive film achieves a dielectric constant elevated from 8.67 to 15.21. Simply by regulating the cellulose structure, the TENG output performance is improved to 971%. Compared with other complex modified cellulose film methods, the output performance is only enhanced to 760%. This method provides new insights into anisotropic assembly, with potential applications in flexible electronics and self-powered sensors.

Underwater communication using triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) offers key benefits such as independence from external power sources and immunity to water conditions, but faces challenges like short transmission range and single-mode operation. This study presents a flexible, bifunctional Janus film as a high-performance TENG for long-distance underwater signal transmission. The PEDOT:PSS-doped charge-generating layer minimizes charge dissipation, while the PEDOT:PSS and BaTiO₃ enriched charge-trapping layer enhances retention, ensuring robust performance in both contact and non-contact modes. Dual-mode transmission supports underwater tasks such as wireless switching, communication, charging, and gesture recognition with 94.84% accuracy. Remarkably, gesture signals transmitted over 200 m through a water pipe set a record for Maxwell's displacement current-based communication. Additionally, a smart rescue system demonstrates the non-contact mode's ability to self-power SOS signal transmission through water pipes in emergency scenarios, unaffected by water quality or pipe shape. This work expands TENG applications in self-powered, long-range underwater communication.

Liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerator (LS-TENG) has emerged as a powerful tool in energy harvesting and motion detecting. There is a recognized need for improving the power output and signal-to-noise ratio of LS-TENG. The instantaneous discharging mechanism of LS-TENG is studied and experimentally realized by a controllable switch structure in this paper. The peak short circuit current and peak power output (at 1 MΩ) are increased by over 26 and 1700 times, respectively, with respect to the control LS-TENG working in the single electrode mode. This research provides a fresh insight in designing sensors with high signal-to-noise ratio and energy harvestors that have a superior performance in driving devices with low load resistance.

Real-time monitoring and evaluation of muscle atrophy are vital for efficient treatment and effective diagnosis. Although some systems have been developed to monitor loss of muscle mass or strength, they are bulky and nonspecific, cannot be applied to the body, and cannot assess the degree of muscle atrophy. Our research focuses on developing a wireless multisensor wearable system (WMWS) for on-body monitoring and assessment of atrophy, which utilizes a single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (S-TENG) and electrochemical creatinine (CREA) sensor to achieve real-time acquisition of plantar pressure and interstitial fluid (ISF) CREA concentration. In addition, LSTM (long short-term memory) and SVM (support vector machine) machine learning (ML) algorithms also prove that our multisensor strategy can effectively improve the recognition rate of different degrees of atrophy (the highest accuracy reached 92.32%). Overall, our work makes it possible to monitor and grade muscle atrophy remotely in real time.

A combination of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and natural wood presents a sustainable approach toward a smart home due to the wood’s biodegradability, low cost, and abundant resource. Major challenges for achieving a cellulose-based TENG are the brittleness, low crystallinity, and low surface charge density. We demonstrated a facile method to process and modify natural wood to satisfy application requirements. The treated wood has both good flexibility and tensile mechanical properties. After pressing, its crystallinity also saw a big increase, with the figure almost tripled. A further surface modification was inspired by dyeing technology. The cellulose on the surface of wood was cationically modified by 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC) via the solution-immersion method. After modification, the surface potential increased two times compared to that of the unmodified one. Density functional theory was used to calculate the absorption energy between cellulose molecules and CHPTAC to further verify the feasibility of the chemical modification. Larger differences between the two tribo-layers in terms of the energy level produce a high electrostatic charge flow. The modified pressed wood-based TENG can generate a peak current of 9.74 μA, a voltage of 335 V, and a transferred charge density of 71.45 μC/m2 through contact electrification. A concept of a self-powered and sensing smart floor integrated with this modified cellulose-based TENG was further developed to provide real-time motion monitoring for a smart home. This work not only removes the wood brittleness but also puts forward a novel method to improve the wood surface charge density from an interdisciplinary perspective, which is crucial to facilitate the application of natural wood in the nanogenerator area.

Traditional TENG (Triboelectric Nanogenerator) research has primarily focused on static loads, limiting their applicability of multimodal composite dynamic loads in practical operating conditions. Therefore, this study centers on the performance and response mechanisms of encapsulated TENGs under multimodal dynamic loads, optimizing TENG structure and performance by using Fe₃O₄-doped MWCNTs-PDMS as the friction layer and encapsulation material. The fabricated TENG demonstrates outstanding performance under both static and dynamic loads, with its output voltage exhibiting a strong linear relationship with both frequency and load. A linear fit accuracy (R²) of up to 98.18 % was achieved under specific conditions. The study indicates that the displacement of the encapsulated TENG correlates well with voltage, with normal signal transmission, and exhibits excellent environmental adaptability, sensitivity, and durability, offering broad application prospects in industrial monitoring and intelligent systems. The TENG device developed in this study shows great potential as a core sensing unit for predictive maintenance systems in engineering applications involving vibrational environments. It is expected to advance fields such as intelligent monitoring and human-machine interaction toward higher sensitivity and broader detection ranges.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) present a promising route for self-powered tactile sensing, demonstrating considerable potential in wearable electronics and the Internet of Things. Although surface engineering is a critical determinant of TENG output performance, predominant strategies are largely confined to static structural designs. Consequently, effective approaches for the dynamic tuning of the contact interface remain limited. Inspired by the natural venation topology of leaves, this work fabricates a rhombic-patterned array on the surface of triboelectric layers via one-step template-assisted electrospinning, facilitating the formation of moiré fringes through interlayer rotation. Rotating the two triboelectric layers to predetermined angles (0°, 45°, and 90°) modulates the period and distribution of the moiré fringes, leading to distinct geometric configurations at the contact interface. This angle-dependent variation of the moiré geometry enables controllable regulation of the effective interfacial contact area, thereby yielding a tunable electrical output. This direct correlation further validates the device's capability for angle sensing. Compared with the TENG based on flat nanofiber membranes, the patterned TENG exhibited a significant short-circuit current enhancement of approximately 306 %, attributed to the synergistic effect of the bio-inspired microstructure and this tunable moiré modulation. The moiré-based angular control strategy introduced here establishes a new paradigm for the design of regulated contact interfaces in next-generation TENGs.

The utilization of textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (t-TENGs) offers great potential for providing sustainable and wearable power. Nevertheless, the current designs of t-TENGs present limitations in terms of low electrical outputs and less developed, straightforward batch processing techniques. Herein, a facile bottom-up foaming-combined coaxial extrusion method is developed for the massive fabrication of liquid metal/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) core–shell porous fibrous TENG, which can be directly woven to form t-TENGs. Ink designs are studied for high-fidelity fibrous TENG manufacturing and porosity-controlled micropore formation. Furthermore, porous fibrous TENGs are applied to integrate different woven structures, and the electrical and mechanical performances of the t-TENGs are optimized. Compared with plain surface fibrous TENG, the porous fibrous TENG achieves a ~ fivefold improvement in the open-circuit voltage (V OC ) and a ~ sevenfold improvement in the short-circuit current (I SC ). These outcomes indicate that we can prepare a range of polymers for t-TENGs with enhanced output performance even though they do not demonstrate great triboelectrification. This work also demonstrates successful integration for sustainably powering miniature electronics. These results can contribute to human motion energy harvesting for wearable self-powered sensors. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are promising for a variety of applications that require a reliable output performance and stability. In this work, by utilizing the synergistic effect of lithium chloride (LiCl) and MXene, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based composite films with humidity-sensitive properties were prepared and employed as a friction layer to achieve self-powered TENGs with enhanced output performance under high humidity. The composite material demonstrates exceptional and stable output performance in the humidity range of 30–95% while exhibiting a strong linear correlation with increasing relative humidity (RH). At 95% RH, its short-circuit current increases up to 31.91 μA, which is three times the output of the TENG fabricated by PVA and PTFE (P-TENG). The rich hydroxyl group in PVA, the strong hygroscopicity of LiCl, and the microcapacitor network provided by MXene nanosheets significantly improve the water absorption capacity and surface roughness of the composite material, resulting in an excellent triboelectric output of TENG. Short-circuit current of the TENG in a wide range of RH (from 50% to 98%) responds very sensitively to humidity fluctuations in the environment and superior adsorption–desorption performance as humidity decreases. Furthermore, TENG regarded as a power supply in high humidity conditions was realized and it can light up 240 LEDs instantaneously with the transfer charge density of TENG reaching 194.37 μC m–2. This technology presents an effective method for stable energy harvesting and self-powered sensing in fog, the ocean, and other high-humidity environments.

Self-powered degradation (SPD) driven by the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has attracted significant attention. However, the effects of TENG on the migration of organic molecules have not been fully explored. Herein, a simultaneous enrichment and degradation mechanism of organic molecules around the electrode in the TENG electric field is proposed by in-situ surface enhancement of Raman scattering (SERS). In-situ SERS reveals that in the TENG electric field, the characteristic peaks intensity of organic molecules exhibits dynamic trend of "initial enhancement followed by attenuation". In the early degradation stages, the enrichment of organic molecules around the electrode exceeds the degradation quantity. As the reaction progresses, the enrichment gradually decreases, and degradation becomes dominant, leading to SERS intensity reduction. This phenomenon differs significantly from the molecular migration in the DC electric field. This work reveals the unique migration mechanism of organic molecules in the TENG electric field and provides theoretical support for SPD applications.

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based on elastic materials is increasing interests for irregular and random mechanical energies harvesting . However, the conductive design of the elastic materials in TENGs often limits its applications. Herein, a new conductive and elastic sponge-based triboelectric nanogenerator (ES-TENG) is developed for random mechanical energy harvesting, which integrates the elastic material and the conductive material on a flexible sponge to realize the collection of mechanical energies, particularly for irregular and random motions. The conductive elastic sponge is prepared by a simple dilute chemical polymerization of aniline to grow conductive polyaniline nanowires (PANI NWs) on the surface of elastic sponge. Due to the flexible deformation of sponge, it can harvest the kinetic energy of disordered motion with different amplitudes and from variable directions. As the triboelectric layer of ES-TENG, the porous sponge and polyaniline nanowires on its surface can provide a large contact area and improve the triboelectric efficiency. At the same time, the conductive polyaniline coating on the surface of sponge can also be used as the electrode of ES-TENG to conduct electrons and generate an output of 540 V and 6 μA respectively, which can be used on various flexible object surfaces to collect irregular and random mechanical energy ubiquitous in daily life. In addition, based on the NH 3 -sensing performance and the three-dimensional reticular structure of the polyaniline nanowires on the elastic sponge, the ES-TENG can make it work as self-powered sensor for detecting toxic NH 3 with the detection limit up to 1 ppm and the response time less than 3 s. In view of the microporous and nanowire structures, elasticity, conductivity and easy fabrication of the conductive elastic sponge, the ES-TENG has promising applications in various irregular and random mechanical energy harvesting and self-powered NH 3 sensors.
