Highly efficient chloramphenicol degradation by UV and UV/H2O2 processes based on LED light source

Mengyi Wu,Yulin Tang,Qianhong Liu,Zhenjiao Tan,Mu Wang,Bin Xu,Shengji Xia,Shun Mao,Naiyun Gao

In this study, UV-LED was employed as a novel light source to investigate the degradation of a representative antibiotic compound, chloramphenicol (CAP), in the absence or presence of H 2 O 2 . The UV-LED irradiation showed a higher capability for degradation of CAP than conventional UV-Hg vapor lamps. Effects of the initial CAP concentration, UV wavelength, and light intensity on the degradation of CAP by UV-LED were evaluated. Introduction of H 2 O 2 evidently enhanced the degradation efficiency of CAP due to the production of reactive hydroxyl radicals. Results showed that the UV-LED/H 2 O 2 removed CAP by up to 95% within 60 min at pH 5.0, which was twice as that achieved by the UV-LED alone. The degradation products were identified to propose plausible degradation pathways. Moreover, the formation potentials of typical carbonaceous disinfection by-products (C-DBPs) and nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs) were assessed for the CAP polluted water treated by the UV-LED alone and UV-LED/H 2 O 2 processes. Results indicate unintended formation of certain DBPs, thereby highlighting the importance of health risk assessments before practical application. This study opens a new avenue for developing environment-friendly and high-performance UV-LED photocatalytic reactors for abatement of CAP pollution in water. Practitioner points UV-LED bore higher capability to degrade CAP than low-pressure Hg lamp. The optimal performance to degrade CAP can be achieved at the UV wavelength of 280 nm. The degradation efficiency under UV-LED/H 2 O 2 process was double of that under UV-LED process. TCM, DCAN, and TCNM formation were higher under the existence of UV-LED radiation. The addition of H 2 O 2 had greater influence on the formation of DCAcAm than the introduction of UV-LED.

Photolysis of free chlorine and production of reactive radicals in the UV/chlorine system using polychromatic spectrum LEDs as UV sources

Guo-Qiang Li,Zheng-Yang Huo,Qian-Yuan Wu,Zhuo Chen,Yin-Hu Wu,Yun Lu,Hong-Ying Hu

Recently, ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) and chlorine combined system has been employed as an emerging advanced oxidation process . However, UV-LEDs were commonly considered as monochromatic UV sources. In this study, the obvious quantum yields of chlorine photolysis under 265 nm and 280 nm LEDs irradiations were investigated with treating LEDs as polychromatic UV sources. Particularly, Φ obs-poly of HOCl and OCl⁻ for 265 nm LED were found to be 1.50 and 0.70 mol E −1 , respectively, whereas Φ obs-poly of HOCl and OCl⁻ for 280 nm LED were 1.28 and 0.64 mol E −1 , respectively. It was identified that Φ obs-poly were 5.66–14.63 % lower than Φ obs-mono . This suggests that obvious quantum yield using peak emission wavelength would overestimate the true quantum yield. The production of radical species in LED UV/chlorine systems were determined by the degradation of BA , and illustrated by a mathematical model. Different trends were observed for 265 nm and 280 nm LED UV/chlorine systems as pH increased from 5.0 to 10.0. As pH increased, the formation of OH continuously decreased in both 265 nm and 280 nm LED systems. The formation of Cl increased at neutral pH and more Cl and OH were formed due to the higher molar absorbance coefficient at 280 nm. The chlorine dose-dependent effects on radical productions at pH of 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 were also assessed. At pH of 5.0, OH was the main radical product and had linear correlation with chlorine dose. At pH of 7.5, the productions of OH and Cl showed similar profiles that increased rapidly at low chlorine dosage and then slowed down.

UV-LED/chlorine degradation of propranolol in water: Degradation pathway and product toxicity

Ruihan Xiong,Zhuojun Lu,Qian Tang,Xueling Huang,Huazhen Ruan,Wei Jiang,Yiqun Chen,Zizheng Liu,Jianxiong Kang,Dongqi Liu

This study reports on the propranolol (PRO) degradation performance and product toxicity of an ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED)/chlorine process. The effects of experimental parameters including solution pH, chlorine dosage, and water matrix constituents on PRO removal were evaluated. Up to 94.5% of PRO could be eliminated within 15 min at a PRO-to-chlorine molar ratio of 1:4. The overall removal efficiency of PRO was non-pH dependent in the range of 5–9, while the initial rate was accelerated under alkaline conditions. The presence of Cl − /HCO 3 − had little influence on the PRO degradation, whereas either humic acid or NO 3 − had an obvious inhibitory effect. Radical scavenger experiments showed that both HO and Cl primarily contributed to the PRO degradation, and electron paramagnetic resonance data demonstrated the generation of 1 O 2 . The transformation of PRO during this process led to five detected products, which exhibited a higher acute toxicity than the parent compound according to the bright luminescent bacillus T3 method. It is worth mentioning that under the same ultraviolet illumination intensity, the degradation of PRO under UV-LED/chlorine gave a better performance than UV 254 /chlorine, but the EEO of the former is obviously higher than the latter. So further research is required on improving the electric current to photon conversion efficiency for UV-LED. Additionally, the UV-LED/chlorine system was effective in the degradation of other drugs including sulfamethoxazole, oxytetracycline hydrochloride, and gatifloxacin, suggesting the possible application of the UV-LED/chlorine process for the removal of pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment .

Highly Efficient Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride Using Monodisperse CuGaS2 Quantum Dots Under UV-LED

Minghao Zhou,Yanlai Wang

CuGaS2 quantum dots (QDs) with uniform size distribution and monodispersion were successfully synthesized by using the hot injection method. Their microstructure, energy band structure, optical properties, and photocatalytic degradation activity were systematically studied. When the reaction temperature was between 180 and 260 °C, the prepared CuGaS2 QDs exhibited a single chalcopyrite structure. The diameter increased from 5 to 18 nm, while the optical band gap decreased from 3.11 to 2.64 eV. Notably, CuGaS2 QDs synthesized at an optimal temperature of 220 °C, with a mean particle size of 8 nm, demonstrated remarkable photocatalytic activity. Under 60 min of UV-LED irradiation at 365 nm, degradation rates of 93.76% for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) and 22.45% for methyl orange (MO) were achieved. These results indicate the tremendous potential of CuGaS2 for water pollution remediation.

Two UV-LED Excited One-component Thioxanthone-based Photoinitiators with High performance, Low migration

Fan Su,Chenyu Wang,Xuan Shen

Developing high performance UV-LED excited photoinitiators is one of research focuses in the field of photopolymerization. Thioxanthone derivatives, which reveal outstanding absorptions in the UV-Vis spectra, have potential excited by UV light source. In this article, two novel thioxanthone-based photoinitiators, 9-oxo-9H-thioxanthen-2-yl 4-(dimethylamino)benzoate (TXOH-DB) and 1-chloro-9-oxo-9H-thioxanthen-4-yl 4-(dimethylamino)benzoate (TXCl-DB), were designed and synthesized, and their structure has been confirmed by FT-IR and 1H NMR. The UV-vis spectra showed that these two photoinitiators appeared redshift compare with TX, and the UV absorption ability of TXCl-DB was stronger than TX. Steady state photolysis experiments and photopolymerization experiments indicated that TXOH-DB and TXCl-DB were one-component photoinitiators and could successfully initiate 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) under UV-LED @395 nm (10 W) without the presence of co-initiatar. In addition, TXOH-DB and TXCl-DB have better migration stability and have the potential for use in UV curing systems, especially in food packaging and biomedical applications.

Synergistic effect of combined UV-LED and chlorine treatment on Bacillus subtilis spore inactivation

Guo-Qiang Li,Zheng-Yang Huo,Qian-Yuan Wu,Yun Lu,Hong-Ying Hu

An ultraviolet (UV)-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) for disinfecting water is introduced in this paper. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of UV light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs)/chlorine AOP (UV/Cl 2 ) for Bacillus subtilis spore inactivation. Chlorine was combined with 265 and 280 nm LEDs (UV 265 /Cl 2 , UV 280 /Cl 2 ) and investigated. The addition of 4.0 mg/L of free chlorine at pH 7.0 in the presence of 125 mJ/cm 2 of UV irradiation resulted in an additional 1.8-log reduction in UV 265 /Cl 2 and 1.5-log reduction in UV 280 /Cl 2 . There was no observed enhancement in spore inactivation with the addition of a radical scavenger, t-BuOH, which indicated the role of • OH in the synergistic effect. To quantitatively evaluate the synergism, the primary treatment with UV/Cl 2 was followed by further UV or Cl 2 treatment. After UV/Cl 2 pretreatment at different pH levels, the 265 and 280 nm LEDs treatment enhanced an approximate 0.4–0.5-log reduction compared to UV only, and Cl 2 treatment enhanced an approximate 0.7–1.1-log reduction compared to Cl 2 only. In addition, at pH 7.0, in UV 265 /Cl 2 -Cl 2 and UV 280 /Cl 2 -Cl 2 , the inactivation rate constant k increased by approximately 2 and 1.5 times, respectively. The CT for the lag phases ( CT lag ) reduced to approximately 67 and 58%, respectively. Similar results were obtained at pH 7.5 and 8.0, and in the secondary effluent. The synergistic effect on spore inactivation suggested that the pathogen inactivation efficiency of sequential UV and chlorine disinfection processes, which are commonly applied, can be significantly enhanced by adding chlorine prior to UV treatment .

A miniaturized UV-LED photochemical vapor generator for atomic fluorescence spectrometric determination of trace selenium

Zhirong Zou,Fujian Xu,Yunfei Tian,Xiaoming Jiang,Xiandeng Hou

A miniaturized UV-LED photochemical reactor is proposed for selenium photochemical vapor generation (Photo-CVG). The miniaturized Photo-CVG reactor with a coin size mainly consists of an ultraviolet light-emitting-diode (UV-LED) and a quartz coil with nano-TiO2 coating on its inner wall. It was coupled with an atomic fluorescence spectrometer (AFS) as a sample introduction device for trace selenium determination. The nano-TiO2 coating process, UV-LED wavelength and correlative experimental parameters as well as potential interference were investigated in detail. Under optimized experimental conditions, limits of detection of 0.21 and 0.28 μg L−1 for Se(VI) and Se(IV) were obtained, respectively, with a relative standard deviation (n = 3) of 2.5% and 1.0% at 20 μg L−1. The potential application of this UV-LED Photo-CVG AFS was demonstrated by successfully analyzing a certified reference water sample and several mineral water samples.

Monomolecular Photoinitiators for Hybrid Light-Curing Systems under UV-LEDs

Xiangzhuo Han,Yingchao Zhang,Jinkai Wang,Zhanchen Cui,Zuosen Shi

Sulfonate oxime ester photoinitiators (PIs) based on a thioether-substituted 1,8-naphthalenedicarboximide backbone exhibit good absorption at the emission wavelengths of commonly used LED lamps (385, 395, and 405 nm). The presence of weak C–S and N–O bonds in the molecular structure enables them to be cleaved under light, which leads to the generation of free radicals and cations with efficient initiation properties. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy supports the mechanism of C–S bond cleavage to produce free radicals, and UV–visible real-time spectroscopy in the presence of Rhodamine B base supports the mechanism of N–O bond cleavage to produce acids. These compounds are high-performance photoinitiators without any other additives for the polymerization of double-bonded compounds and epoxides. They can be initiated at low concentrations when exposed to UV-LEDs. These photoinitiators provide important ideas for the design and synthesis of photoinitiators, which have great potential for application in the field of photopolymerization, especially in hybrid light-curing systems.

Synergistic algicidal effects of combined UV-LED/chlorine treatments on Tetraselmis sp.: Optimization and mode-of-action

Diya Wen,Daoyi Chen,Yuelu Jiang

Unwanted proliferation of and adhesion by microalgae, as involved in fouling and species invasion, are important problems across many maritime operations and coastal industrial activities. The algicidal mechanisms of ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) and the synergistic algicidal effects between UV-LEDs and chlorine treatments in seawater were investigated in this study. Tetraselmis sp. was employed as the challenge organism. Five UV wavelengths (265, 280, 285, 300 and 315 nm) and three chlorine dosages (0.6, 0.8 and 1 mg L −1 ) were examined in a factorial experiment to optimize the disinfection performance achieved by combined UV-LED/chlorine treatments in seawater. Overall, the combined treatments showed a more effective inactivation of the microalgae than did the single treatments. Treatment with UV 285 combined with 0.8 mg L −1 chlorine resulted in 3.12-log inactivation at 100 mJ cm −2 (i.e. 2.34 Einsteins L -1 , 67 s). This optimal combination showed a higher inactivation rate constant and lower energy consumption (E E,2 ) than did the other treatments. The contribution of UV-LEDs, chlorine and hydroxyl radical (·OH) in the inactivation of Tetraselmis sp. by the combined UV-LED/chlorine disinfection process was investigated to illustrate the mechanism of this synergistic process, the results indicated that ·OH generated by photolysis were not the only contributors to the inactivation of the microalgae. Although a UV 300 /chlorine treatment demonstrated the highest chlorine photolysis rate, the inactivation constant of this treatment was lower than that of UV 285 /chlorine. These results demonstrated a synergistic algicidal effect of the combined disinfection system caused by exposure to the 285 nm UV-LED and low dosages of chlorine, which could provide an important basis for further developments and possibly industrial applications in the future.

A new UV source activates ozone for water treatment: Wavelength-dependent ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED)

Jie Wang,Haibao Liu,Yan Wang,Defang Ma,Guangping Yao,Qinyan Yue,Baoyu Gao,Xing Xu

The newly emerged ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) as a new UV source may replace the conventional UV lamps for water treatment in the foreseeable future. In this study, UV-LED with four wavelengths (i.e., 255, 265, 280, and 310 nm) was used to investigate the wavelength-dependency of UV-LED/O 3 process on the radical/non-radical formation and hexazinone degradation. The degradation of hexazinone in UV-LED/O 3 process with different wavelengths (31.1–97.4%) was higher than that of O 3 oxidation process alone (20.0%), and the hexazinone removal rate at 280 nm was the highest (97.4%). The fluence-based rate constant of hexazinone degradation in UV-LED/O 3 process (0.19–2.97 × 10 −5 m 2 ·J −1 ) was higher than that in low-pressure UV/O 3 (LPUV/O 3 ) process (0.15 × 10 −5 m 2 ·J −1 ). Hydroxyl radical (·OH) and superoxide radicals (O 2 − ) were the dominant active species in UV-LED/O 3 process, and the single oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was also beneficial to the degradation of hexazinone. The possible degradation pathways were proposed based on high resolution mass spectrum (MS). The reaction sites of free radicals were further predicted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Besides, the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.) and Vibrio fischeri were used to estimate the potential toxicity of hexazinone and intermediates and it was suggested that alkaline environment and sufficient oxidation time were conductive to reducing the toxicity of wastewater.

Degradation of Chloramphenicol Using UV-LED Based Advanced Oxidation Processes: Kinetics, Mechanisms, and Enhanced Formation of Disinfection By-Products

Xinlu Qu,Haowei Wu,Tianyang Zhang,Qianhong Liu,Mu Wang,Mohamed Yateh,Yulin Tang

As an emerging light source, ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) are adopted to overcome the shortcomings of the conventional mercury lamp, such as mercury pollution. The degradation of chloramphenicol (CAP) using three UV-LED-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs)—UV-LED/persulfate (UV-LED/PS), UV-LED/peroxymonosulfate (UV-LED/PMS) and UV-LED/chlorine—was investigated. Results indicate that CAP can be more effectively degraded by the hybrid processes when compared to UV irradiation and oxidants alone. Degradation of CAP using the three UV-LED-based AOPs followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The degradation rate constants (kobs) for UV-LED/PS, UV-LED/PMS, and UV-LED/chlorine were 0.0522, 0.0437 and 0.0523 min−1, and the CAP removal rates 99%, 98.1% and 96.3%, respectively. The degradation rate constant (kobs) increased with increasing oxidant dosage for UV-LED/chlorine, whereas overdosing reduced CAP degradation using UV-LED/PS and UV-LED/PMS. Ultraviolet wavelength influenced degradation efficiency of the UV-LED based AOPs with maximum CAP degradation observed at a wavelength of 280 nm. The application of UV-LED enhanced the formation DBPs during subsequent chlorination. uUV-LED/PMS produced more disinfection by-products than UV-LED/PS. Compared to UV-LED, UV-LED/PS reduced the formation of dichloroacetonitrile and trichloronitromethane during chlorination owing to its capacity to degrade the nitro group in CAP. The intermediates dichloroacetamide, 4-nitrobenzoic acid, 4-nitrophenol were produced during the degradation of CAP using each of UV-LED, UV-LED/PS and UV-LED/chlorine. The present study provides further evidence supporting the application of UV-LED in AOPs.Keywords:chloramphenicol;advanced oxidation processes;UV-LED

The Effects of UV-LED Technology on the Quality of Ready-to-Eat Pomegranates: Epigenetic Indicators and Metabolomic Analysis

Aihemaitijiang Aihaiti,Yuanpeng Li,Xinmeng Huang,Yuting Yang,Ailikemu Mulati,Jiayi Wang

Pomegranates are rich in nutrients and classified among ready-to-eat fruits and vegetables. Although this ready-to-eat produce offers convenience, it presents risks associated with pathogenic microorganisms, highlighting the need for pre-sale disinfection. Ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) constitute an innovative non-thermal processing technology for food products, offering reduced heat generation and lower energy consumption compared to traditional ultraviolet (UV) irradiation methods. This study analyzed the effects of UV-LED technology on pomegranate seed quality over 0 to 5 days of storage. The results demonstrated significant increases in anthocyanins, polyphenols, ascorbic acid, and the antioxidant capacity in pomegranate following treatment, peaking on day 3. In contrast, the control group showed declining trends. After treatment, the aerobic mesophilic counts and counts of mold and yeast levels during storage measured between 2.73–3.23 log CFU/g and 2.56–3.29 log CFU/g, respectively, significantly lower than the control group. Non-targeted metabolomic analysis showed that UV-LED treatment prompted modifications in the biosynthetic pathways of flavonoids, flavonols, and anthocyanins. The expression of peonidin-3-O-rutinoside chloride increased by 46.46-fold within the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway. In conclusion, UV-LED treatment represents a potential approach to the disinfection of ready-to-eat fruits and vegetables.
