The organization of modifiable and functional building components into various superstructures is of great interest due to their broad applications. Supramolecular self-assembly, based on rationally designed building blocks and appropriately utilized driving forces, is a promising and widely used strategy for constructing superstructures with well-defined nanostructures and diverse morphologies across multiple length scales. In this study, two homogeneous organohydrogels with distinct appearances were constructed by simply mixing polyoxometalate (phosphomolybdic acid, HPMo) and a double-tailed zwitterionic quaternary ammonium amphiphile in a binary solvent of water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The delicate balance between electrostatic attraction and repulsion of anionic HPMo clusters and zwitterionic structures drove them to co-assemble into homogeneous organohydrogels with diverse microstructures. Notably, the morphologies of the organohydrogels, including unilamellar vesicles, onion-like vesicles, and spherical aggregates, can be controlled by adjusting the ionic interactions between the zwitterionic amphiphiles and phosphomolybdic acid clusters. Furthermore, we observed an organohydrogel fabricated with densely stacked onion-like structures (multilamellar vesicles) consisting of more than a dozen layers at certain proportions. Additionally, the relationships between the self-assembled architectures and the intermolecular interactions among the polyoxometalate, zwitterionic amphiphile, and solvent molecules were elucidated. This study offers valuable insights into the mechanisms of polyoxometalate-zwitterionic amphiphile co-assembly, which are essential for the development of materials with specific structures and emerging functionalities.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) treatment requires a nanosystem for drug delivery that can effectively penetrate the blood–spinal cord barrier (BSCB). Herein, we designed poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylgallylcholine) (PMPC)/l-arginine (PMPC/A)-based nanomotors that can release nitric oxide (NO). The nanomotors were loaded with the inducible NO synthase inhibitor 1400W and nerve growth factor (NGF). PMPC with a zwitterionic structure not only provided good biocompatibility for the nanomotors but also facilitated their passage through the BSCB owing to the assistance of a large number of choline transporters on the BSCB. Additionally, the l-arginine loaded on the nanomotors was able to react with reactive oxygen species in the microenvironment of the injured nerve to produce NO, thereby conferring the ability of autonomic movement to the nanomotors, which facilitated the uptake of drugs by cells in damaged areas and penetration in pathological tissues. Moreover, in vivo animal experiments indicated that the PMPC/A/1400W/NGF nanomotors could effectively pass through the BSCB and restore the motion function of a rat SCI model by regulating its internal environment as well as the release of therapeutic drugs. Thus, the drug delivery system based on nanomotor technology offers a promising strategy for treating central nervous system diseases.

All-inorganic CsPbI 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been extensively studied due to their high thermal stability and unprecedented rise in power conversion efficiency (PCE). Recently, the champion PCE of CsPbI 3 PSCs has reached up to 21%; however, it is still much lower than that of organic–inorganic hybrid PSCs. Interface modification to passivate surface defects and minimize charge recombination and trapping is important to further improve the efficiency of CsPbI 3 PSCs. Herein, a new zwitterion ion is deposited at the interface between electron transporting layer (ETL) and perovskite layer to passivate the defects therein. The zwitterion ions can not only passivate oxygen vacancy (V O ) and iodine vacancy (V I ) defects, but also improve the band alignment at the ETL-perovskite interface. After the interface treatment, the PCE of CsPbI 3 device reaches up to 20.67%, which is among the highest values of CsPbI 3 PSCs so far. Due to the defect passivation and hydrophobicity improvement, the PCE of optimized device remains 94% of its original value after 800 h storing under ambient condition. These results provide an efficient way to improve the quality of ETL-perovskite interface by zwitterion ions for achieving high performance inorganic CsPbI 3 PSCs.

Zwitterions have aroused much interest to endow implantable medical devices with anti-fouling and anti-thrombosis performance, due to their ability to form a hydrated layer that can provide a good barrier against protein and cell adhesion. Herein, tyramine modified sulfobetaine-derived sodium hyaluronan (HST) hydrogel coating was fabricated, in which hyaluronan (HA) was used as polysaccharide skeleton to graft zwitterionic sulfobetaine, and tyramine was introduced as crosslinker to construct both the network of hydrogel and a strong covalent bond between coating and substrate. Hydrogel coating was prepared by spin coating or painting HST prepolymer solution under ultraviolet light irradiation. The obtained HST hydrogel coating shows good stability. Moreover, in addition to its outstanding anti-fouling performance and good biocompatibility, it can effectively prevent thrombosis in blood circulation ex vivo . This work offers a universal strategy to prepare a high-performance anti-fouling and anti-thrombosis coating, which is expected to promote the development of functional coatings for biomedical materials.

Although loose nanofiltration membranes have been extensively studied for dye desalination, high-throughput membranes with antifouling and antibacterial properties are still highly needed. In this study, a zwitterion-modified molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) dual-layer loose nanofiltration membrane was prepared with the integration of antibacterial, antifouling, and high-flux properties. To be specific, MoS2 nanosheets were loaded on a polyacrylonitrile ultrafiltration membrane through pressure-assisted self-assembly. Then, poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) was coated on the surface of the MoS2 membrane via a simple polydopamine (PDA)-assisted one-step codeposition to prepare PSBMA/PDA/MoS2 nanofiltration membranes. Elemental and morphological analyses confirmed the formation of the MoS2 layer and PSBMA/PDA coating. In addition, the effect of the PSBMA amount and codeposition time on surface properties and membrane performances was investigated. Under optimum conditions, the as-prepared membrane showed excellent water permeance of 262 LMH/bar with good dye rejection (99.8% for methylene blue) and salt permeability, as well as excellent antifouling and antibacterial properties benefiting from the synergy of PSBMA/PDA coating layers and MoS2 layers.

Zwitterion-coated graphene oxide (ZC-GO) containing ammonium and sulfonic acid groups was synthesized, and various amounts were incorporated into polybenzimidazole (PBI). The effect of the ZC-GO content on the properties of PBI/ZC-GO composite membranes for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) applications was investigated. The structure of ZC-GO was confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and the purity and structure of PBI were investigated using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. With increasing ZC-GO content, the proton conductivity, methanol permeability, water uptake, and swelling ratio of the composites increased, whereas the thermal stability decreased. Notably, the composite membrane containing 25 wt% ZC-GO exhibited a high proton conductivity (4.12×10 −2 S cm −1 at 90 °C and RH 100%) and low methanol permeability (1.38×10 −7 cm 2 s −1 at 25 °C), which is much lower than that of Nafion 117 under the same conditions. The excellent properties of the composite membranes can be attributed to the homogeneous dispersion of ZC-GO and the formation of proton-transport channels in the membranes. This investigation demonstrates the potential of PBI/ZC-GO composite membranes for DMFC applications.

Functional hydrogels have attracted tremendous interest in biomedical fields. In this study, we prepare hydrogel based on [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) (SBMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and GelMA acts as crosslinking agent to crosslink the P(SBMA-co-HEMA) molecular chain. The hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties (strength up to 1.21 MPa), fatigue resistance (withstands 50 compression tensile cycles and remains stable), and high transmittance enables visualization of hydrogel dressings. Furthermore, antibacterial experiments proves that hydrogel could significantly resist the adhesion of E. coli. and the hydrogel also has excellent antifreezing and water retention properties. More importantly, in vitro and in vivo assays reveals the hydrogel has excellent biocompatibility and stability, making them competitive candidates for biomedical applications such as wound dressing.

A ureteral stent with strong resistance to proteins, bacteria, and multivalent ions is crucial for the safe treatment of urologic diseases. Generally, the proteins, bacteria, and multivalent ions present in urine tend to bind to the stent surface, leading to aggregation, nucleation, and subsequent stent encrustation. Stent encrustation can induce or exacerbate urinary tract infections and obstructions, thereby seriously harming kidney function. Although hydrophilic coatings on ureteral stents can reduce the binding of proteins, bacteria, and multivalent ions, encrustation still occurs. To date, preventing stent encrustation formation remains a significant challenge. Here, we grafted dense trimethylamine oxide (TMAO)-derived zwitterionic polymers onto the stent surface via a branched amplification strategy. These zwitterions can strongly bind water molecules, forming a stable hydration shell that repels proteins, bacteria, and multivalent ions from adhering to the surface of the polyurethane ureteral stent, thus rendering the stent anti-encrustation. The results showed that the TMAO-derived zwitterion-coated stents exhibited a significantly reduced encrustation weight (13.8% of the original polyurethane stent) and demonstrated good safety. This approach offers a promising method for enhancing stent encrustation resistance. Statement of Significance This study successfully developed a TMAO-derived zwitterionic coating on the surface of a polyurethane stent, creating a superhydrophilic surface with a minimal contact angle of 5.2 o . This surface effectively shields the stent from interactions with proteins, bacteria, and multivalent ions in urine, demonstrating favorable anti-protein adsorption and antibacterial adhesion properties. The superhydrophilic surface formed by the TMAO-derived zwitterionic coating on the stents (PTMAO-s) provides strong anti-fouling resistance and enhanced anti-encrustation properties. Under identical conditions, the encrustation resistance of PTMAO-s is approximately 7.2-fold greater than that of original polyurethane stents (PU), 3.6-fold greater than Bard commercial stents, and 2.1-fold greater than betaine-coated stents (PSBG-s).

Non-specific protein adsorption on material surfaces is a critical challenge in the fields of biomedicine applications, often compromising device functionality and causing potential health risks. To address this challenge, a series of amphiphilic mixed brush coatings composed of hydrophilic poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) (PCBMA) and hydrophobic poly[methyl(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)siloxane] (PMTFPS) were designed and prepared. The surface restructuring behaviors of these mixed brushes affect their synergistic antifouling effects, resulting in distinctly different protein-resistant properties. When the PCBMA chains are shorter than the PMTFPS chains and the grafting density of PCBMA is moderately higher than that of PMTFPS, the mixed brushes exhibit excellent protein adsorption resistance after both dry and wet treatments. The presence of a suitable number of PMTFPS chains on the surface not only provides the fouling-release property but also minimizes the disturbance on hydration from protein contact, thereby maximizing synergistic antifouling effects. This work can provide unique insight for designing brush coatings with excellent protein-resistant performance in the future.

Enzymatic modification, compared with traditional starch (St) chemical modification methods, avoids using toxic solvents and toxic catalysts. The horseradish peroxidase (HRP), being the most commonly employed natural green initiator, has found extensive application in starch grafting modification as a substitute for chemical initiators. HRP-catalyzed grafting of starch with vinyl zwitterionic monomers has not been reported. Here, modified starch (St-PSBMA) is first synthesized by grafting zwitterionic sulfobetaine [2-(Methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) (SBMA) onto starch by HRP/Acetylacetone(ACAC) binary initiation system catalyzed. The modified starch-based hydrogel is then prepared by the repeated freeze-thaw method. Compared with native starch-based hydrogels, which bind water molecules only through hydrogen bonding, the ability of modified starch-based hydrogels to bind water molecules is enhanced by ionic solvation. The modified starch hydrogels also have excellent antiprotein adsorption and antibacterial properties due to the presence of a strong hydration layer. The modified starch-based hydrogel also has excellent sensitivity and stability when used as a sensor for detecting joint motion. The binary HRP initiating system, employed in this study instead of the traditional three-component HRP initiating system, offers a novel and promising approach for grafting modification of starch without the need for strong oxidant hydrogen peroxide.

Nanofiltration (NF) membrane with high selectivity and permeance is important for recovering lithium from salt lake brine. In this work, sandwich-like NF membranes were prepared using polyamide (PA) as the interfacial polymerization (IP) layer, dopamine (DA) and zwitterion-g-C 3 N 4 as the composite interlayer and polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane as the substrate. Three NF membranes were prepared with different zwitterion-g-C 3 N 4 : M3 membrane modified with C 5 H 12 ClNO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 , M4 membrane modified with C 12 H 24 N 2 O 4 S-g-C 3 N 4 and M5 membrane modified with C 19 H 39 NO 2 -g-C 3 N 4 , and their physical and chemical properties, separation capacity, and antifouling behaviour were analyzed. The zwitterion-g-C 3 N 4 composite interlayer improves the hydrophilicity and pore structure of NF membranes. The water contact angle (CA) of M5 membrane is 25.5°and its pore size is 0.49 nm. M5 membrane shows a high retention rate of 96.66 % for Mg 2+ in mixed salt solution (Mg 2+ /Li + = 84) and performs well in salt lake brine with a rejection of 97.90 % to Mg 2+ . The flux recovery ratio (FRR) can be kept above 93 %. This study may give ideas for the preparation of composite NF membrane for water softening and lithium utilization.
