Numerous application of pyrethroid insecticides has led to their accumulation in the environment, threatening ecological environment and human health. Its fate in the presence of iron-bearing minerals and natural organic matter under light irradiation is still unknown. We found that goethite (Gt) and humic acid (HA) could improve the photodegradation of bifenthrin (BF) in proper concentration under light irradiation. The interaction between Gt and HA may improve BF degradation. On one hand, the adsorption of HA on Gt may decrease the photocatalytic activity of HA through decreasing HA content in solution and sequestering the functional groups realated with the production of reactive species. On the other hand, HA could improve the photocatalytic activity of Gt through extending light absorption, lowing of bandgap energy, hindering the recombination of photo-generated charges, and promoting the oxidation and reduction reaction on Gt surface. The increased oxygen vacancies on Gt surface along with the reduction of trivalent iron and the nucleophilic attack of hole to surface hydroxyl group contributed to the increasing photocatalytic activity of Gt. Electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching studies demonstrated that both oxidation species, such as hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and reducing species, such as hydrogen atoms (H•) and superoxide anion radical (O 2 •− ), contributed to BF degradation in UV-Gt-HA system. Mass spectrometry, ion chromatography, and toxicity assessment indicated that less toxic OH–BF (C 23 H 22 ClF 3 O 3 ), TFP (C 9 H 10 ClF 3 O), OH-MBP (C 14 H 14 O 2 ), MBP acid (C 14 H 12 O 2 ), and OH-MBP acid (C 14 H 12 O 3 ), and chloride ions were the main degradation products. The production of OH–BF, MPB, and TFP acid through oxidation and the production of MPB and TFP via reduction were the two primary pathways of BF degradation.

BACKGROUND Pyrethroids are widely used insecticides due to their efficacy and safety for humans, yet their toxicity to beneficial insects like bees remains a critical environmental concern. Developing controlled-release formulations to mitigate non-target toxicity and enhance pesticide efficiency is imperative for sustainable agriculture. RESULTS In this experiment, two types of PCN-222 materials, with small and large particle sizes, were synthesized using a solvothermal method. Bifenthrin (Bif) was loaded onto PCN-222 to prepare the controlled-release agent Bif@PCN-222. The structure and properties of the prepared materials were characterized by morphology observation, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and contact angle measurements. The experimental findings indicated that Bif@PCN-222 demonstrated excellent release performance under alkaline conditions and exhibited better wettability on cabbage leaves compared to commercial formulations. Additionally, the Bif@PCN-222 controlled-release agent significantly improved resistance to UV photodegradation. Safety evaluations showed that Bif@PCN-222 had minimal impact on the growth of Zoysia grass and notably reduced toxicity to bees. CONCLUSION These results show that we have successfully prepared Bif@PCN-222, which can enhance the pest control effect, reduce the toxicity to non - target organisms, and have a relatively small impact on plant growth and the number of soil microflora. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

A sensitive monoclonal antibody-based enzyme monoclonal antibody-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect bifenthrin in a chemical soil barrier for termite control. LBc ((2-methyl[1,1-biphenyl]-3-methoxy) carbonyl propionic acid) was conjugated to bovine serum albumin (BSA) for producing monoclonal antibody. After optimization, the IC 50 and limit of detection (LOD, IC 10 ) were 0.05 mg L − 1 and 0.004 mg L − 1 , respectively. The sensitivity was improved 40-fold compared to polyclonal antibody-based ELISA reported earlier. No cross-reactivity was measured for the other analogues such as cyhalothrin, cyhalothric acid, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, fenpropathrin, fenvalerate, ethofenprox and tetramethrin except 2-methyl-3-biphenylmethyanol. Spiked recoveries were between 83.5% and 104.7% for the detection of bifenthrin in loess, red soil and black soil. All the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were less than or equal to 15.0%. Moreover, the ELISA for authentic samples showed reliability and high correlation with gas chromatography. The developed ELISA is an alternative tool for simple, sensitive and accurate monitoring of bifenthrin in chemical soil barriers.

Herein, we fabricated three imidazolium-based polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) with different anions (P[VEIM]BF4, P[VEIM]PF6 and P[VEIM]Br), and analyzed their differential extraction efficiencies for bifenthrin through H-bonding induced effects. Three PILs all presented an irregular block structure with rough surface and lower specific-surface area (SSA, 11.2–18.7 m2 g−1) than carbon-based nanomaterials. They formed hydrogen bonds with free-water molecules in the lattice of PILs, including C2,4,5–H⋯O–H, Br⋯H–O–H⋯Br, O–H⋯Br, C2,4,5–H⋯F–P, P–F⋯H–O–H⋯F–P, C2,4,5–H⋯F–B and B–F⋯H–O–H⋯F–B. After extraction, the O–H stretching-vibration peak was prominently intensified, whereas the C–H bond varied slightly concomitant with reduced B–F and P–F vibration. Theoretically, the C–H vibration should become more intense in the C4,5–H⋯H2O and C2–H⋯H2O bonds after extraction in contrast to before extraction. These contrary spectral changes demonstrated that the hydrogen bonds between cations in the PILs and free-water molecules were broken after extraction, yielding the H-bonding occurrence between bifenthrin and H–O–H in the lattice. As a time indicator for the free-water binding and releasing process, the highest slope for the plot of It/I0 against time implied that the shortest time was required for P[VEIM]PF6 to reach an adsorption equilibrium. Overall, the strong hydrophobicity, small SSA and electrostatic-repulsion force for P[VEIM]PF6 are all not conducive to its efficient adsorption. Beyond our anticipation, P[VEIM]PF6 provided the highest extraction recovery for bifenthrin up to 92.4% among three PILs. Therefore, these data lead us to posit that the above high efficiency results from the strongest H-bonding effect between P[VEIM]PF6 and bifenthrin. These findings promote our deep understanding of PILs-triggered differential efficiency through a H-bonding induced effect.

The Tyndall Effect assay (TEA) has been applied into colorimetric metal ion detection since 2019. However, the TEA-based sensor for pesticide detection has never been reported till now. Herein, a facile fluorescent organic nanoparticle (FON)-based sensor is firstly developed for fluorine-containing pesticide detection through ratiometric fluorescence assay (FLA) and TEA. For FLA, the intensity of the second-order Tyndall scattering peak (STS 590nm ) and the fluorescence peak of the FON-based sensor would increase and remain unchanged respectively when adding bifenthrin, flufenoxuron, and diflubenzuron. The detection limits were respectively 9.34, 6.91, and 3.60 μg/kg. For TEA, the increased STS 590nm intensity displayed a bright and visible light beam. An economical, simple, and portable device was then constructed to visually monitor the analytes. The sensor was successfully used to detect the analytes in teas through FLA and TEA with the recoveries and RSD ranging from 86.27–100.00 %, and 0.00–5.68 %, respectively.

Bifenthrin (BF) is a broad-spectrum insecticide that has gained widespread use due to its high effectiveness. However, there is limited research on the potential toxic effects of bifenthrin pollution on amphibians. This study aimed to investigate the 50 % lethal concentration (LC 50 ) and safety concentration of Chinese giant salamanders (CGS) exposed to BF (at 0, 6.25,12.5,25 and 50 μg/L BF) for 96 h. Subsequently, CGS were exposed to BF (at 0, 0.04, and 4 μg/L BF) for one week to investigate its toxic effects. Clinical poisoning symptoms, liver pathology, oxidative stress factors, DNA damage, and transcriptome differences were observed and analyzed. The results indicate that exposure to BF at 4 μg/L significantly decreased the adenosine-triphosphate (ATP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and catalase (CAT) contents in the brain, liver, and kidney of CGS. Additionally, the study found that the malondialdehyde (MDA), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) contents were increased. The liver tissue exhibited significant inflammatory reactions and structural malformations. RNA-seq analysis of the liver showed that BF caused abnormal antioxidant indices of CGS. This affected molecular function genes such as catalytic activity, ATP-dependent activity, metabolic processes, signaling and immune system processes, behavior, and detoxification, which were significantly upregulated, resulting in the differential genes significantly enriched in the calcium signaling pathway, PPARα signaling pathway and NF-kB signaling pathway. The results suggest that BF induces the abnormal production of free radicals, which overwhelms the body's self-defense system, leading to varying degrees of oxidative stress. This can result in oxidative damage, DNA damage, abnormal lipid metabolism, autoimmune diseases, clinical poisoning symptoms, and tissue inflammation. This work provides a theoretical basis for the rational application of bifenthrin and environmental risk assessment, as well as scientific guidance for the conservation of amphibian populations.
