Direct synthesis of a lithium carboxymethyl cellulose binder using wood dissolving pulp for high-performance LiFePO4 cathodes in lithium-ion batteries

Jingxin Li,Ailin Wang,Weihao Xiang,Shiwei Liu,Lu Li,Qiong Wu,Yue Liu,Yuxiang Liu,Genkuo Nie,Shuangxi Nie,Shuangquan Yao,Hailong Yu

Lithium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Li) is a promising novel water-based binder for lithium-ion batteries. The direct synthesis of CMC-Li was innovatively developed using abundant wood dissolving pulp materials from hardwood (HW) and softwood (SW). The resulting CMC-Li-HW and CMC-Li-SW binders possessed a suitable degree of substitutions and excellent molecular weight distributions with an appropriate quantity of long- and short-chain celluloses, which facilitated the construction of a reinforced concrete-like bonding system. When used as cathode binders in LiFePO 4 batteries, they uniformly coated and dispersed the electrode materials, formed a compact and stable conductive network with high mechanical strength and showed sufficient lithium replenishment. The prepared LiFePO 4 batteries exhibited good mechanical stability, low charge transfer impedance, high initial discharge capacity (∼180 mAh/g), high initial Coulombic efficiency (99 %), excellent cycling performance (<3% loss over 200 cycles) and good rate capability, thereby outperforming CMC-Na and the widely used cathode binder polyvinylidene fluoride.

Enabling 10C-rate fast charging in LiFePO4 based lithium-ion battery by balancing the electronic and ionic conductivity paths in cathode

Kang Xia,Zhengyin Yao,Pengfei Zhao,Zhen Liu,Shuo Zhao,Zheng Peng,Peng Zhang

The challenge of high-rate charging remains a critical barrier for the widespread adoption of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, we address this issue by employing a novel binder, poly(methyl methacrylate)-grafted-natural rubber (PMMA- g -NR), for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes. This amphiphilic binder not only improves ionic and electronic conductivities but also prevents macro-phase segregation of LFP and conductive carbon, ensuring uniform distribution. The unique microphase morphology, governed by the “like dissolves like” principle, enriches conductive carbon in NR domains and LFP particles in PMMA domains, enhancing the synergy between the ionic and electronic transport pathways. The resulting LFP||Li cells exhibit exceptional rate performance, maintaining 64% capacity retention after 1200 cycles at 10C. Furthermore, the binder’s excellent elasticity preserves electrode integrity during repeated cycling. This work highlights the critical role of binder design in advancing high-rate charging capabilities, offering a scalable solution to improve the fast-charging performance and longevity of LIBs.

Sustainable transformation of spent LiFePO4 cathodes into high-voltage olivine LiMnxFe1-xPO4 via solvothermal upcycling strategy for next-generation cathode material

Cheng Cheng,Wei Mao,Xuan Cao,Kaijun Xu,Shaochun Tang

With the retirement of a large number of lithium-ion batteries, how to efficiently recycle cathodes, especially for spent LiFePO 4 (S-LFP) olivine materials with low content of valuable elements, has become a research focus. Moreover, upcycling S-LFP to high-voltage olivine LiMn x Fe 1-x PO 4 (LMFP) is crucial for advancing next-generation cathode materials. Herein, this study proposes a solvothermal upcycling strategy that achieves complete elemental recovery and converts S-LFP into high-voltage LMFP. The resulting LMFP exhibits a uniform elemental distribution, attributed to the atomic-level miscibility of Fe and Mn. As a result, the regenerated LMn 0.5 Fe 0.5 PO 4 exhibits remarkable cycle stability with 83.8 % capacity retention after 2500 cycles at 5 C and a 40 % improvement in energy density (561 Wh kg -1 ) over that of S-LFP (402 Wh kg -1 ). This study presents an effective, direct upcycling route for the large-scale production of next-generation, high-performance olivine cathode materials while achieving sustainable reutilization of S-LFP through closed-loop life cycle management.

Enhanced performance of flexible quasi-solid-state lithium batteries with high-loading cathode enabled by laser drilling

Shaoping Wu,Hongpeng Zheng,Nan Zhang,Weizheng Cheng,Hezhou Liu,Huanan Duan

Gel electrolyte composite with high areal capacity cathode effectively improves battery energy density and safety. Still, the insufficient interface contact between electrolyte and electrode limits the capacity release inside the thick cathode. Here, we rationally design a self-supporting cathode and use the in-situ polymerization method to integrate the gel electrolyte with the cathode. This cathode can effectively reduce the content of inactive electrode components. Meanwhile, the design of the regularly-arranged pore structure of the cathode introduced by laser texturing facilitates the penetration of the prepolymer solution and enables outstanding lithium-ion transport. Notably, the quasi-solid LiFePO 4 /Li half-cell with active material loading of 8 mg cm −2 exhibits good electrochemical performance (118.5 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2C at room temperature). Moreover, when the loading of active materials increases to 30 mg cm −2 , the LiFePO 4 /Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 full-cell can still have a relatively high discharge capacity (105.9 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles at 0.2C at room temperature). It is worth noting that the quasi-solid pouch cell prepared by in-situ polymerization has a certain flexibility, indicating that this strategy has application potential in flexible electronic devices.

Toward energy-efficient recycling of spent LiFePO4 cathode: Lowering reduction temperature though bamboo-assisted pyrolysis and sodium carbonate-mediated in-situ mineralization

Rui Diao,Cunzhang Yang,Liting Fu,Xinran Zhou,Bowen Li,Yakai Ma,Zhenting Zha,Fenglei Qi,Xiaohao Liu,Peiyong Ma

While the imperative for a low-carbon energy transition and electrification substitution has established electric vehicles (EVs) development as a critical strategy for carbon emission reduction, power battery recycling consequently represents a pivotal link in completing the lifecycle management of EVs. Herein, we report a novel approach for recovering lithium iron phosphate (e.g., LFP) from spent batteries based on a synergistic pyrolysis process. Biomass and sodium carbonate are used together to disrupt the olivine structure through carbothermal reduction with a relatively low temperature. The results indicated that biomass generated more reducing gases and phenolic compounds through sodium carbonate-assisted pyrolysis, which lowered the reduction barrier for the metal oxides in spent LFP, substantially reducing the reaction temperature by 240 °C compared to conventional graphite reduction. Moreover, sodium carbonate effectively suppresses the volatilization of lithium at high temperatures, enabling high recovery efficiencies of 93% from iron and 95% from lithium. The scalability was confirmed by bench-scale experiments, which showed consistent recovery performance at a 50-fold scale increase. The environmental benefits of this pathway, as per life cycle assessment, reduce the environmental footprint and align with industrial green standards. This study presents a novel recycling strategy for spent LFP, based on a biomass-assisted reduction process with a mineralization agent. The incorporation of biomass addresses both economic and environmental challenges, thereby establishing a cost-effective and green technology suitable for the large-scale recycling of LFP.

Enhanced low-temperature performance of LiFePO4 cathode via large-scale production of reduced graphene oxide-based ternary point-line-plane conductive network

Wang Shaoqiu,Cai Xiaoming,Tang Junwen,Su Jianwen,Jadoon Aniqa,Fang Shuaishuai,Liu Zijian,Cai Jinming

A gradient thermal reduction approach was employed to facilitate the large-scale production of high-quality, cost-effective reduced graphene oxide (RGO). The RGO was then combined with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon black (Super-P) to form a ternary conductive additive system for LiFePO 4 (LFP)-based lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This type of composite significantly enhanced the electrochemical performance of the LIBs. By incorporating RGO along with CNTs and Super-P, a three-dimensional (3D) "point–line–plane" conductive network was successfully constructed. This structure efficiently reduced the charge transfer resistance (Rct = 37.99 Ω) and enhanced the Li + diffusion coefficient (D = 7.78 × 10 –13 cm 2  s −1 ). The optimized cathode exhibited remarkable discharge capacity of 163.3 mAh g⁻ 1 at 0.1C under room temperature and 95 mAh g⁻ 1 at 6C. Moreover, it maintained a high capacity retention rate of 99.6% after 100 cycles at -15 °C and 0.3C. This work provides a practical strategy for utilizing large-scale production of RGO for developing high-performance LIBs. Graphical

Synthesis of LiFePO4 cathode materials from amorphous FePO4 precursor: Effects of Li/P molar ratio on crystal defect formation and electrochemical performance

Yongsheng Chen,Siman Yang,Jianbin Zheng,Mingwei Hu,Mingdeng Wei,Peixun Xiong

As an excellent cathode material, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) has been widely used in commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the impact of synthetic conditions on LiFePO 4 cathode derived from amorphous iron phosphate (FePO 4 ) remains underexplored. In the present study, the effects of Li/P molar ratio on the crystallinity and electrochemical properties of LiFePO 4 were investigated in detail using FePO 4 as a precursor. When the Li/P molar ratio in LiFePO 4 was approximately 1, the material exhibited an excellent long-term cycling stability with a high capacity retention of 97 % after 500 cycles. In addition, multiple characterizations demonstrate that the higher molar ratio of the Li/P resulted in the higher concentration of defects in LiFePO 4 crystals, which not only reduced the reversible capacity but also compromised the structural stability, leading to a poor cyclic stability and quick capacity degradation. Therefore, such a work could provide a scientific insight for rational design and synthesis of high-performance LiFePO 4 cathodes from amorphous FePO 4 precursor.

Electrospun heterocycle aramid nanofiber separator with MOF-supported porous structure enabled excellent cycling stability for lithium metal batteries with high LiFePO4 loading

Kexiong Gao,Junhui Luo,Xin Li,Kun Fan,Longbo Luo,Xiangyang Liu

Recently, para -aramid nanofiber separators have attracted more attention in lithium metal batteries (LMBs); however, the balance between safety and electrochemical performance remains challenging. Herein, a robust, porous, and thermotolerant separator (ZPBIA) is proposed based on electrospun heterocycle aramid nanofibers and in-situ grown metal-organic framework (MOF). First, introducing H 2 SO 4 enables improved electrospinnability of rigid-chain poly(p-phenylene -benzimidazole-terephthalate) (PBIA) due to hierarchical hydrogen bonds crosslinking network formation. Next, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) nanosheets anchored in situ on PBIA nanofibers confer high porosity (91%) and good electrolyte wettability to the ZPBIA separator. As a result, the assembled LFP/ZPBIA/Li cell with a high LiFePO 4 (LFP) loading (12 mg cm −2 ) delivers excellent rate capacity at 5.0 C (76 mAh g −1 ) and impressive long-term cycling stability at 1.0 C (a minor capacity decay of 0.031% per cycle after 500 cycles). Benefiting from the intrinsic properties of PBIA, the ZPBIA separator possesses high mechanical strength to prevent Li dendrites puncture. Moreover, the open circuit voltage stabilizes at ∼3.4 V from 30 to 150 ℃ for LFP/ZPBIA/Li cell, which is probably applied in high-temperature conditions. This work provides a novel fabrication of functional separators to balance the safety and electrochemical property of LMBs.

Freeze-drying synthesis of three-dimensional porous LiFePO4 modified with well-dispersed nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Xiaofeng Tu,Yingke Zhou,Yijie Song

The three-dimensional porous LiFePO 4 modified with uniformly dispersed nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes has been successfully prepared by a freeze-drying method. The morphology and structure of the porous composites are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the electrochemical performances are evaluated using the constant current charge/discharge tests, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes are uniformly dispersed inside the porous LiFePO 4 to construct a superior three-dimensional conductive network, which remarkably increases the electronic conductivity and accelerates the diffusion of lithium ion. The porous composite displays high specific capacity, good rate capability and excellent cycling stability, rendering it a promising positive electrode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Dual optimization of LiFePO4 cathode performance using manganese substitution and a hybrid lithiated Nafion-modified PEDOT:PSS coating layer for lithium-ion batteries

Mohamed M. Abdelaal,Mohammad Alkhedher

The energy storage market necessitates an increase in the specific capacity of battery materials, particularly cathodes, to meet growing demands. Manganese (Mn) substitution of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes presents a promising avenue, offering high specific capacity and operability at elevated voltages. However, during cycling, the dissolution of Fe/Mn ions into the electrolyte leads to capacity fading. In this study, we enhance the specific capacity of LFP by Mn substitution in the iron position at various ratios (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4). LiFe 0.6 Mn 0.4 PO 4 exhibits the highest capacity of 159.1 mAh g -1 at 0.1C with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 97.9 %. This improvement stems from an enhanced lithium diffusion coefficient, increasing from 1.86 × 10 –14 cm 2 s -1 for pristine LFP to 2.46 × 10 –12 cm 2 s -1 for LiFe 0.6 Mn 0.4 PO 4 . However, LiFe 0.6 Mn 0.4 PO 4 demonstrates the poorest capacity retention among the substituted samples, reaching 78.4 % over 100 cycles due to severe Fe/Mn ion dissolution. To address this issue, we coat Mn-substituted LFP with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and lithiated Nafion (LN) polymer, which offer high electronic and lithium-ion conductivity, respectively. This coating layer enhances the capacity retention of LiFe 0.6 Mn 0.4 PO 4 to 90.1 % at 0.2C after 100 cycles, effectively mitigating active material loss during charge-discharge processes. This study demonstrates that PEDOT:PSS-LN can improve the electronic and ionic conductivity of cathode materials and maintain high capacity retention during cycling.

Phosphorus recovery from simulated anaerobic fermentation supernatant through vivianite crystallization: the role of aluminium and its implications for the synthesis of LiFePO4

Shilong Wang,SuNa Wang,Weiyi Zhao,Shiyu Fang,E. Yang,Runze Xu,Fang Fang,Weijing Liu,Jiashun Cao,Song Cheng

Recovering phosphorus (P) from wastewater benefits both the environment and the field of clean energy. Vivianite is a key precursor for clean energy lithium batteries, making it a highly valuable and promising product in wastewater P recovery. As a widely used cathode material in lithium-ion batteries, LiFePO 4 is valued for its excellent thermal stability, safety, and long cycle life, making it a promising material for sustainable energy applications. However, the large amount of aluminium (Al) present in the recirculated sludge can be released into the supernatant during the anaerobic digestion process, which affects the recovery of vivianite and further impacts the performance of LiFePO 4 . This study investigated the effect of Al on vivianite crystallization throughout the P recovery process and explored the direct synthesis of LiFePO 4 using Al-containing vivianite. Varying initial Al concentrations were examined to understand their influence on the crystallization kinetics, purity, and morphology of vivianite. At low Al concentrations (1–50 mg/L), Al formed amorphous aluminium phosphate that attached to vivianite crystals via electrostatic interactions and surface adsorption. At high Al concentrations (100–300 mg/L), Al predominantly entered the solid phase through co-precipitation, significantly inhibiting vivianite formation. LiFePO 4 /C cathode materials were synthesized using the recovered Al-containing vivianite. The results revealed that Al existed as inert substances within LiFePO 4 /C, reducing its crystallinity and specific discharge capacity. These findings elucidate how Al affects vivianite crystallization during P recovery and provide theoretical insights for converting Al-containing vivianite into value-added LiFePO 4 .

Performance of 3D Network-Structured LiFePO4@Li3V2(PO4)3/Carbon Nanofibers via Coaxial Electrospinning as Self-Supporting Cathode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Ruixia Chu,Hongtao Zhang,Wanyou Huang,Fangyuan Qiu,Yan Wang,Zhenyu Li,Xiaoyue Jin

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high power, high capacity, and support for fast charging are increasingly favored by consumers. As a commercial electrode material for power batteries, LiFePO4was limited from further wide application due to its low conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion rate. The development of advanced architectures integrating rational conductive networks with optimized ion transport pathways represents a critical frontier in optimizing the performance of cathode materials. In this paper, a novel self-supporting cathode material (designated as LFP@LVP-CES) was synthesized through an integrated coaxial electrospinning and controlled pyrolysis strategy. This methodology directly converts LiFePO4, Li3V2(PO4)3, and polyacrylonitrile (PAN)) into flexible, binder-free cathodes with a hierarchical structural organization. The 3D carbon nanofiber (CNF) matrix synergistically integrates LiFePO4(Li/Fe/POx) and Li3V2(PO4)3(Li/V/POx) nanoparticles, where CNFs act as a conductive scaffold to enhance electron transport, while the POxpolyanionic frameworks stabilize Li+diffusion pathways. Morphological characterizations (SEM and TEM) revealed a 3D cross-connected carbon nanofiber matrix (diameter: 250 ± 50 nm) uniformly embedded with active material particles. Electrochemical evaluations demonstrated that the LFP@LVP-CES cathode delivers an initial specific capacity of 165 mAh·g−1at 0.1 C, maintaining 80 mAh·g−1at 5 C. Notably, the material exhibited exceptional rate capability and cycling stability, demonstrating a 96% capacity recovery after high-rate cycling upon returning to 0.1 C, along with 97% capacity retention over 200 cycles at 1 C. Detailed kinetic analysis through EIS revealed significantly reduced Rctand increased Li+diffusion. This superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects between the 3D conductive network architecture and dual active materials. Compared with traditional coating processes and high-temperature calcination, the preparation of controllable electrospinning and low-temperature pyrolysis to some extent avoid the introduction of harmful substances and reduce raw material consumption and carbon emissions. This original integration strategy establishes a paradigm for designing freestanding electrode architectures through 3D structural design combined with a bimodal active material, providing critical insights for next-generation energy storage systems.
