A novel hollow-structured thermite, n-Al/H-MoO 3 , is designed to enhance the energy release mode and combustion performance of solid propellant. This research comprehensively explores the preparation and structural features of n-Al/H-MoO 3 within solid propellants. Furthermore, a series of rigorous combustion tests, performance assessments, and computational simulations are conducted to investigate its practical application. Experimental results indicate that the significant improvements in combustion performance have been observed by integrating this innovation n-Al/H-MoO 3 in solid propellants as a burning rate modifier. The heat of explosion increases to 6135 J·g −1 , a 41.76 % increase over the blank group (M0). Furthermore, its flame temperature is 494.3°C higher than that of the blank group. These substantial gains are primarily attributed to the unique hollow structure of n-Al/H-MoO 3 , which facilitates the reaction between H-MoO 3 and Al in the gaseous phase region, thereby improving combustion dynamics. The research findings offer theoretical foundations and experimental support for the design of more efficient and stable propellants.

Due to the higher susceptibility of alcohols and ketones to oxidation compared to alkanes, converting inert C-H bonds in alkanes into high value-added product KA oil with high selectivity is still a significant obstacle. In this study, flower-like microspheres of MoO 3-x , featuring aligned nanosheets and oxygen vacancies, were combined with nitrogen doped carbon dots (NCDs) to fabricate S-scheme heterojunctions of MoO 3-x -NCDs for boosting the photocatalytic efficiency in oxidizing cyclohexane. Because of the oxygen vacancies-triggered localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism, there was a significant improvement in the absorption of visible light and an enhancement in the efficiency of charge separation. The MoO 3-x -NCDs composites exhibited a notably improved catalytic performance in cyclohexane oxidation. The MoO 3-x -NCDs composite exhibited remarkable selectivity of KA oil in catalyzing cyclohexane oxidation under light exposure, attributed to the substantial increase in cyclohexane adsorption capacity. The highest cyclohexane transformation rate of 9.98 % was achieved by MoO 3-x -NCDs-2 composites with a MoO 3-x /NCDs ratio of 50:1, outperforming bare MoO 3-x by 1.81 times, while exhibiting a KA oil selectivity reaching 93.75 %. The mechanism of selective photocatalytic oxidation was explored using photoelectric examination, analysis of energy bands, and evaluation of active radicals. In this research, green photocatalysts were fabricated through the utilization of NCDs, enabling efficient conversion and selective oxidation of cyclohexane in gentle environments. This innovative approach holds great potential for advancing the field of photocatalysis.

Compared to a single heterostructure , constructing multiple heterojunction interfaces to enhance bifunctional catalytic activity still faces challenges. Herein, a nanoflower-like electrocatalyst with multiple heterojunction interfaces, which consists of MoO 3 , V 2 O 5 , and Ni(OH) 2 in-situ grown on nickel foam, is prepared through a one-step hydrothermal method (MoO 3 /V 2 O 5 /Ni(OH) 2 /NF, named MVN/NF). The MVN/NF exhibits superior catalytic performance, attributable to enhanced electron transfer facilitated by numerous heterojunction interfaces, a substantial active specific surface area , and a self-supported architecture. It requires low potentials for hydrogen evolution reaction , urea oxidation reaction , and overall urea electrolysis of 81 mV, 1.351 V, and 1.450 V (vs. RHE), respectively, to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . By cutting the material into a large-scale electrode for use in an alkaline electrolyzer , its Faraday efficiency was 90.0%, and the urea decomposition rate reached 45.1%. This work offers broad application prospects for the realization of large-scale hydrogen production and the decomposition of urea-containing wastewater.

In this study, a novel Ni–MoO 3 @MIL‐101(Cr) composite catalyst was synthesized via a one‐step hydrothermal method for the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT). The catalyst combines the high specific surface area of MIL‐101(Cr) with the redox properties of Ni–MoO 3 , providing an effective synergy between adsorption and catalytic oxidation. The incorporation of Ni as a promoter significantly enhances catalytic activity, enabling complete sulfur removal (∼100%) under mild conditions (50 °C) within 60 min. Structural characterizations (scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and SAED) reveal that the catalyst retains its nanosheet–nanorod morphology and crystalline MoO 3 phase after repeated use, with only a slight decrease in the crystallinity of the MIL‐101(Cr) framework. Mechanistic analyses using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, and temperature‐programmed reduction demonstrate that surface oxygen vacancies and Lewis acid sites promote ODS activity, while highly dispersed Ni–MoO 3 species facilitate H 2 O 2 activation and Mo 6+ /Mo 5+ redox cycling, leading to efficient generation of reactive oxygen species. The catalyst also exhibits excellent stability, maintaining 98.7% DBT conversion after five cycles. These results demonstrate that the strong Ni–Mo synergistic effect and efficient oxygen activation make Ni–MoO 3 @MIL‐101(Cr) a robust and highly efficient catalyst for deep fuel desulfurization. This study presents a significant advancement in the field of oxidative desulfurization by developing a synergistic Ni–MoO 3 redox catalytic system confined within the porous MIL‐101(Cr) framework. Unlike conventional catalysts, the designed material effectively enhances H 2 O 2 activation through cooperative interactions between Ni and Mo species, enabling rapid and ultra‐deep removal of refractory sulfur compounds under mild conditions. The integration of redox‐active sites with a high‐surface‐area MOF support not only improves catalytic efficiency but also ensures excellent stability and recyclability. This work provides new insights into the rational design of bimetallic catalysts for green fuel purification and offers a promising strategy for achieving sustainable and energy‐efficient desulfurization processes.

Oxalic acid etching creates porous surface on micron-Al particles. • Porous Al surface enlarges contact area with I 2 O 5 and MoO 3 oxidizers. • MoO 3 triggers low-temperature preheating and high-temperature Mo + I 2 exotherm. • Etched ternary thermite reduces activation energy by up to 106 kJ·mol −1 . • Ignition delay decreases 170 ms; flame temperature rises 749 °C. Micron-sized Al/I 2 O 5 thermite exhibits inferior ignition performance and low combustion efficiency due to the dense Al 2 O 3 passivation layer, which restricts the interfacial contact between Al and the oxidizer. Herein, a synergistic dual strategy combining oxalic acid surface etching (0.3 mol·L −1 ) of micron Al powder and MoO 3 incorporation is proposed to fabricate Al/I 2 O 5 @MoO 3 ternary thermite. Acid etching constructs uniform porous surface structures and substantially enlarges the Al-oxidizer contact area while maintaining a high active Al content. The introduced MoO 3 triggers a low-temperature exothermic reaction with Al at ∼380 °C, which preheats the thermite system and facilitates subsequent I 2 O 5 decomposition, as well as the high-temperature Mo-I 2 reaction at ∼1000 °C. Benefiting from the synergistic effects, the optimized thermite achieves a maximum activation energy reduction of 106 kJ·mol −1 , an ignition delay time reduction of up to 170 ms, and a flame temperature increase of 749 °C. The optimal MoO 3 mass fraction in the oxidizer is determined to be 0.1–0.2, while excessive MoO 3 induces combustion instability. This work provides mechanistic insights and practical guidelines for the design of high-performance Al/I 2 O 5 -based thermites via synergistic surface engineering and oxidizer modulation. High-performance ethanol sensors with low power consumption show critical applications in environmental monitoring, personal health diagnosis, industry and traffic safety. Herein, MoO3/Nb2C MXene heterojunction gas-sensing materials were constructed via a one-step hydrothermal method for MoO3nanotube synthesis. The dominant facets of MoO3were shifted from the (040) orientation in MoO3nanotubes to the (110) and (021) orientations in the MoO3/Nb2C MXene composite. Nb2C nanosheets provide a large number of crystallization sites, preventing the growth of MoO3nanotubes during synthesis, inducing a strategic facet release. The sensing performance shows MoO3/Nb2C MXene composite reduces the operating temperature down to 120 °C. The 15 wt% Nb2C MXene-precursor-mixed MoO3sensor exhibits an enhanced response of 6.1 toward 100 ppm ethanol, which is higher than that of pristine MoO3nanotubes at 120 °C, with response and recovery times of 19 s and 72 s, respectively. The sensors show high selectivity toward ethanol over other VOC gases and good long-term stability over 30 days. This work confirms that crystal engineering is an effective method for reducing operating temperature and enhancing gas-sensing performance, and the sensor shows potential application for ethanol sensing.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of MoO 3 semiconductors leverages charge-transfer (CT) pathways to achieve highly sensitive detection of toxic molecules, demonstrating significant potential for multiple applications. However, insufficient CT pathways and efficiencies are key factors limiting the development. In this work, W-doped MoO 3 substrates with different doping ratio were prepared using double-target magnetron sputtering method to increase the CT pathway formation. UV–Vis and UPS analyses indicate that the enhancement of SERS activity was mainly due to the narrowing of the optical bandgap and the optimization of band edge positions, which promoted the formation of photo induced charge transfer pathways. The W-doped MoO 3 substrates significantly elevated the SERS response by several orders of magnitude compared to the original value, achieving an enhancement factor (EF) of CV up to 1.31 × 10 6 . Importantly, the W-doped MoO 3 substrates have proven capable of simultaneously detecting two types of pollutant molecules in river water affected by industrial emissions, highlighting their practical application potential in environmental monitoring.

The selective oxidation of inert C-H bonds in cycloalkanes to high-value KA oil (the mixture of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol) is a major industrial challenge, primarily due to the inherent trade-off between conversion and selectivity. To address this, we developed a novel photoelectrocatalyst for the oxidation of cyclohexane under ambient conditions. The catalyst was constructed by first synthesizing blue, oxygen-vacancy-rich MoO 3-x nanowires via a hydrothermal method, followed by the in-situ deposition of AuAg alloy nanoparticles with tunable compositions. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the uniform distribution of the alloy nanoparticles and the formation of a Schottky heterojunction with the MoO 3-x support. This design promotes efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers and enhances visible-light absorption through the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. During photoelectrocatalytic oxidation, the optimized catalyst (MoO 3-x -Au 20 Ag 20 ) exhibited exceptional performance, achieving a cyclohexane conversion of 30.24% with 93.7% selectivity to KA oil under 2.6 V applied bias and 2 h of irradiation. This represents a 1.9-fold increase in conversion compared to pristine MoO 3-x nanowires. This work provides an efficient and selective pathway for alkane oxidation and advances the strategy for designing synergistic photoelectrocatalytic systems.

Photochromic TiO2@MoO3 core–shell (TM) nanopowder was synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method and characterized with XRD, TEM, Raman, and a spectrophotometer. The nanopowder has a very small particle size of 5–10 nm in diameter, and a well-defined core–shell structure with the tight interface; that is, an anatase TiO2 core is tightly surrounded with amorphous MoO3, to form an ideal heterojunction structure. The growth mechanism was proposed with a surface-induced nucleation of amorphous MoO3 from a well-mixed precursor, where the mutual inhibition between core and shell led to the confined core size. The photochromic performance of TiO2@MoO3 was evaluated in solution as well as casted thin film on glass using a spectrophotometer, with a comparison to that of single MoO3. A significant enhancement in the photochromic properties was demonstrated for TM; that is, the change of the absorbance in water at 600 nm is about 30 times larger than that of α-MoO3, and a 20% transmittance regulation at 500–800 nm was obtained for the TM-based thin film. Meanwhile, the samples in ethanol showed much stronger photochromic coloration efficiency than that in water by 66.6% enhancement in the absorption at 600 nm. Such a significant photochromic enhancement is considered to the formation of a relatively ideal heterojunction at the interface, leading to an efficient electron–hole separation. The size effect of TM provides a high specific surface area for cation insertion/extraction and diffusion and decreases the distance of electron transfer. Furthermore, a shift of excitation wavelengths from UV to visible was also observed due to the appearance of extra defect bands by Mo doping into TiO2 in their interface, which was supported by XRD and Raman measurements. The enhanced photochromic performance of TiO2@MoO3 is expected to be used for color displays and smart windows.

It is widely known that the challenge of making good electrical contact at the back electrode interface will always follow us for high-efficient kesterite-type CZTSSe thin-film solar cells. Aiming at clarifying the correlation of device performance on the micro-structure of back interface, we come up with a new fresh design that introducing in-situ anodized MoO 3 porous arrays with regulated structural parameters acts as the back interfacial contact. Regards the such array-structures of interpenetrated CZTSSe and MoO 3 , the study reveals that the overall device performance is closely related to the micro-structure of the MoO 3 interface layer , and the optimized device efficiency can be improved to 9.00% from 6.31% (Ref. Mo-based cells), having a 32% increased J SC together with a 64% increase in FF. The performance improvement mechanism is analyzed in details. The interesting preliminary finding would indicate that the new strategy is very effective to form reliable electrical contact at the back interface for high-efficient CZTSSe solar cells.

Recently, the fabrication of functional and stimuli-responsive hydrogels using deep eutectic solvent derivatives is gaining tremendous scientific recognition owing to their unique self-switching properties. In this study, perfluorinated deep eutectic mixtures were prepared as the template for the synthesis of WO 3 /MoO 3 composites. The metal oxide-based composites were further employed as a chemical crosslinking agent for the polymerization of polyvinyl pyrrolidine (PVP) and acrylamide (Am), for the construction of (PVP-Am)/WO 3 /MoO 3 hydrogel composites. The hydrogels displayed unique morphologies and mechanical properties . The hydrophilic nature of hydrogels as well as the high concentration of dispersed WO 3 /MoO 3 composites in the polymer network contributes to their photochromic activity and allows an immediate coloration upon exposure to light at a short time. Howbeit, the low concentration of the dispersed WO 3 /MoO 3 composites in the dry glass membrane is responsible for the blue coloration and an extended time of photochromic response. In addition, the electrochromic behavior of the hydrogel composites displayed a strong quasi-rectangular shape potential window as well as a well-defined redox cyclic voltammetry curve when exposed to high voltage. This could be due to the photoredox property of the WO 3 /MoO 3 composites responsible for charge transfer between the different oxidation states.

metal oxide electronic interactions in composite electrocatalysts have a considerable impact on their catalytic capability. In this study, we successfully synthesized an electrocatalytic material composed of MoO 3 /C species-supported Pd nanoparticles (Pd-MoO 3 /C) using a convenient hydrothermal method, which exhibited excellent catalytic activities for both ethanol oxidation and oxygen reduction in KOH media. The specific activity of Pd-MoO 3 /C toward ethanol oxidation with MoO 3 loading (40 wt%) was ~ 2.6 times greater than that for the commercial Pd/C (10 wt%) with the same Pd content. In particular, the activity could effectively hold up to ~ 60% of its maximum activity after 500-cycle tests, demonstrating improved cyclical stability. Notably, the fast electron transfer kinetics toward oxygen reduction for Pd-MoO 3 /C (40%) were also comparable to those of commercial Pt/C (20 wt%) catalysts. These superior electrochemical features are primarily derived from the stronger electronic coupling between Pd and MoO 3 through charge transfer, which can supply more active centers and improve the anti-poisoning ability. Meanwhile, the MoO 3 species in the Pd-MoO 3 /C composite may provide additional benefits in terms of electrical conductivity and dispersion. Graphical Abstract
