Regulation of the hydrolysis reaction performance of aluminum composites by PTFE and investigation of the hydrolysis mechanism

Fei Xiao,Hongxia Zhang

Improving the hydrolysis reaction properties of aluminum to prepare renewable and environmentally friendly hydrogen is of great interest for the application of mobile hydrogen sources . Here, a series of poly(tetrafluoroethylene)-based activated aluminum composites were prepared, and their microstructures and hydrogen generation properties were investigated in detail. The results show that PTFE can effectively increase the hydrolysis reaction rate of activated aluminum composites. The sample Al–8Bi-2PTFE exhibits the fastest hydrolysis reaction rate. Through observing the microscopic morphology of the hydrolyzed products of Al–8Bi-2PTFE at different reaction times, the catalytic role of PTFE in the hydrolysis reaction of the composite was proved. PTFE can accelerate the rupture of the particles of Al–8Bi-2PTFE during the hydrolysis reaction, thereby accelerating the hydrolysis reaction rate of aluminum.

Underwater self-sustaining combustion and micro-propulsion properties of Al@FAS-17/PTFE-based direct-writing nanothermite

Haifeng Yang,Chuanhao Xu,Weimiao Wang,Pengfei Tang,Xiaodong Li,Shanshan He,Hebin Bao,Shuaishuai Man,Deyun Tang,Xueming Li,Guangcheng Yang,Zhiqiang Qiao

Micro-propulsion underwater technology has been an extensively concerned topic in advanced marine energy systems because of its wide prospects in high-precision prospecting and positioning. Wherein, the design and selection of propellant in energy-supply systems are the key issues to greatly explore its future application. Here, the hydrophobic thermite sticks which contain hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene nanoparticles and modified aluminum coated with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane shells, were fabricated via a simple direct-writing approach. The modified thermite sticks exhibit stable underwater combustion and self-sustained propagation with a small diameter size (0.94 ± 0.05 mm). In-situ observation shows that the underwater reaction process could be divided into three steps: laser-induction, organic decomposition-dissolution, and thermite reaction. The aging results indicate that the thermite sticks demonstrate an excellent storage stability wherever in air or underwater environments. Simultaneously, it is found that its critical energy required to sustain stable underwater combustion is higher than that in air. Most notably, it not only can be used as the fuels for controllable miniature underwater propulsion, but also can be applied as the energy-delivery materials to expand thrust capacity of vehicles by igniting higher impulse explosives, such as CL-20.

High-efficient and environmental-friendly PTFE@SiO2 core-shell additive with excellent AW/EP properties in PAO6

Na Wang,Honggang Wang,Junfang Ren,Gui Gao,Gengrui Zhao,Yawen Yang,Jinqing Wang

Environmental-friendly polytetrafluoroethylene@silica (PTFE@SiO 2 ) composite particles characterized by core-shell structure were synthesized. The tests demonstrated that the synthesized particles had good dispersibility and stability in poly-α-olefin 6 (PAO6) and its corrosion resistance was better than zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP). The extreme pressure (EP) and tribological tests evidenced that PTFE@SiO 2 particles possessed superior EP and anti-wear (AW) properties, which could enhance the wear-resistance and load-bearing capacities of PAO6 in high efficiency, whereas the tribological performance was greatly affected by the load. Besides, EP tests for different kinds of base oils demonstrated that the addition of PTFE@SiO 2 particles could significantly improve the bearing capacity of these base oils, and the corresponding performances were also better than ZDDP. Scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectrum characterizations proved that there was an organic-inorganic co-extruded transfer film generated on the worn surface, and a possible lubrication mechanism on this basis was also put forward.

Electrospun PTFE/PI bi-component membranes with robust 3D superhydrophobicity and high water permeability for membrane distillation

Jingge Ju,Zongjie Li,Yi Lv,Mengyao Liu,Kaouthar Fejjari,Weimin Kang,Yuan Liao

Membrane distillation (MD) is an attractive membrane process for seawater and brine water desalination. One of the main obstacles for MD application is the absence of an effective MD membrane with high water permeability and an excellent salt rejection. This work proposes a novel design strategy of hydrophobic/hydrophilic bi-component membranes for MD by electrospinning and calcination . Unlike the conventional dual-layer hydrophobic/hydrophilic membranes, the bi-component membrane developed in this work is composed of multiple layers of hydrophilic polyimide (PI) nanofibers and hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microclusters, which interweave with each other in the entire membrane. The optimal hydrophobic/hydrophilic bi-component membrane #PTFE/PI-2 shows robust three-dimensional (3D) superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties. It exhibits a highly competitive permeation flux of 42 ± 3 L m −2  h −1 and an excellent salt rejection above 99.9% in a 400-h continuous DCMD operation when the feed solution was synthetic seawater with a NaCl concentration of 3.5 wt% at 60 °C. Moreover, it is able to achieve an outstanding water flux of 40 ± 2 L m −2  h −1 and a salt rejection over 99.9% when the feed solution was brine water with a NaCl concentration of 25 wt%. The high vapor permeability of #PTFE/PI-2 should be attributed to the high membrane porosity, negligible mass transfer resistance of PI nanofibers and more effective water evaporation area on its superhydrophobic surface. Meanwhile, the excellent anti-wetting property should be due to a unique 3D superhydrophobicity constructed by multiple layers of PTFE microclusters.

Bimetallic PtFe-Catalyzed Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol: Solvent Effect of Isopropanol and Hydrogen Activation

Xing Gao,Suyang Tian,Yunyun Jin,Xiaoyue Wan,Chunmei Zhou,Rizhi Chen,Yihu Dai,Yanhui Yang

Highly selective liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural was efficiently catalyzed by PtFe alloy nanoparticles supported on CeO2. An initial reaction rate at ∼1500 h–1, a near 100% selectivity toward furfuryl alcohol (FA), and a satisfactory recycling stability were achieved on Pt3Fe/CeO2 catalyst. Based on the well-established knowledge of the modification effects of Fe additives on the geometric and electronic properties of Pt sites, this work further demonstrated that the bimetallic PtFe sites could promote H2-activated dissociation for accelerating the hydrogenation reaction in comparison with the monometallic Pt/CeO2 catalyst. The results of isotopic and kinetic experiments to study the solvent effects elucidated that the reaction pathway of catalytic transfer hydrogenation with isopropanol as the hydrogen donor could be ruled out. The results also suggested that isopropanol-involved hydrogen exchange processes with hydrogen and FA could easily occur during the reactions. Furthermore, the furfural hydrogenation could be significantly affected by the solvent intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions.

Enhanced wetting and fouling resistance of ZIF-8/PVA@PTFE Janus membrane in air-bubbling-assisted membrane distillation

Onyeagoro Robinson Uzochukwu,Chen Lin,Ruichao Zhu,Jin Wu,Yixuan Zhou,Zhu Liang

Hydrophobic membranes, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), are prone to pore wetting during membrane distillation when treating wastewater containing amphiphilic contaminants. In this study, a Janus membrane composed of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was fabricated via vacuum filtration and employed in air-bubbling-assisted direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). The optimal membrane, with a 0.815 mg/cm 2 ZIF-8 loading, achieved a desalination rate of 99 %, a stable vapor flux of 20.53 L/(m 2 ·h), and a permeate conductivity of less than 1.44 μS/cm during 25 h of operation. However, the increasing concentration of SDS in the feed solution over time led to an increase in conductivity, which pointed to a reduction in the membrane's anti-wetting performance, suggesting the limitations of ZIF-8 alone in mitigating wetting. To overcome this, continuous air bubbling was introduced, which significantly enhanced wetting resistance and extended the membrane's operational lifespan to 48 h. Higher airflow rates (5.93 L/min) yielded optimal performance. Furthermore, a Random Forest machine learning model was employed to predict permeate flux and conductivity based on key operational parameters, achieving a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) greater than 0.73. Collectively, this study demonstrates the synergistic potential of the ZIF-8/PVA@PTFE Janus membrane combined with air-bubbling assistance to effectively suppress wetting and enhance the efficiency and durability of membrane distillation for challenging wastewater.

Influence of Nano-CeO2 on the Corrosion Resistance of PTFE/PEEK Coatings Prepared by Electrostatic Powder Spraying Technique

Mingkun Han,Junxin Song,Jiahao Tian,Keqi Wu,Xuewei Zhu,Xiaofeng Wei

Polytetrafluoroethylene/Polyetheretherketone (PTFE/PEEK) corrosion-resistant coatings were prepared on the surface of 7075 aluminum alloy by the electrostatic powder spraying technique (EPST). To achieve a denser microstructure and improved hydrophobic properties, we introduced nano-CeO2to fill the coatings and analyzed the mechanism of its effect on the different coating structures. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was evaluated using NaCl immersion. The results indicate that nano-CeO2enhances the coatings by filling local defects and forming a denser microstructural barrier, thereby improving the hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings. Additionally, the addition of nano-CeO2to the 20 µm PTFE/PEEK composite coating increases structural heterogeneity and pore defects, reduces coating densification, and facilitates the penetration of corrosive media, thereby weakening the barrier capability of the coating. However, in the 50 µm PTFE/PEEK/CeO2composite coating, nano-CeO2particles fill part of the pre-existing defects and improve coating densification, thereby increasing the resistance to the penetration of corrosive media through the coating. This enhanced barrier effect delays the contact of corrosive media with the substrate and improves the corrosion resistance of the coating. In this study, the 50 μm PTFE/PEEK/CeO2composite coating with a nano-CeO2content of 0.5 wt.% exhibited the best corrosion resistance, with a corrosion current density of 8.02 × 10−4μA·cm−2, while |Z|0.01Hzremained above 106Ω·cm2after 720 h of immersion in NaCl solution.

Construction of Porous PTFE/PVDF Fibrous Membranes via Sacrificial-Template-Assisted Centrifugal Spinning for Efficient Oil–Water Separation

Xin Liu,Yinger Ye,Jingying Xu,Xianglong Li

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are usually considered ideal materials for oil–water separation due to their excellent chemical stability, thermal resistance, and hydrophobicity. However, PTFE exhibits poor spinnability in both solution and melt spinning, whereas the fabrication of PVDF fibers typically relies on toxic solvents. To overcome these limitations, a superhydrophobic porous micro/nanofibrous membrane was developed in this work. Specifically, precursor fibers were first prepared by centrifugal spinning using native cassava starch and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as carrier components together with PTFE and PVDF emulsions. Subsequently, fibers with porous structures were obtained by exploiting the different melting temperatures of PTFE and PVDF during sintering. The morphology, structure, thermal stability, and wetting properties were systematically investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements, revealing that the optimal membrane featured a uniformly interconnected porous network with an average fiber diameter of 1.09 ± 0.02 μm. The resulting blend fibrous membrane exhibits excellent superhydrophobicity (water contact angle reaching 154°) and a high oil flux (8500 L/m 2 h). This approach effectively integrates the low surface energy of PTFE with the favorable processability of PVDF, offering a novel design strategy for the fabrication of high-performance oil–water separation membranes. Highlights Porous PTFE/PVDF fibrous membranes were fabricated by centrifugal spinning. The optimized membrane reached a water contact angle of 154°. The membrane achieved an oil flux of 8500 L/m 2 h in oil–water separation. Cassava starch acted as a low-cost green pore-forming template.

Microphase Rivet-Reinforced Interfaces in PTFE Composites: Enabling High Thermal Conductivity and Dimensional Stability for High-Frequency Substrates

Hanyu Guo,Renke Li,Wei Gao,Yuting Kong,Yongfeng Li,Rong Chen,Hong Wu,Shaoyun Guo

Heat dissipation remains a formidable challenge for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) based high-frequency substrates, as the integration of thermally conductive fillers like hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is often hindered by the intrinsic chemical inertness and ultra-low surface energy of PTFE. Herein, a soluble fluoroalkyl end-capped polyimide (FPI) precursor is developed. The amphipathic structure of FPI acts as an intermolecular bridge, facilitating the homogeneous dispersion of hydrophobic hBN within aqueous PTFE emulsions. Upon thermal imidization, in situ microphase “rivet” architectures evolve at the filler-matrix boundaries, replacing fragile van der Waals contacts with robust, mechanically anchored transitional zones. The topological interlocking significantly restricts the long-range segmental mobility of PTFE chains, yielding an exceptional thermal conductivity of 2.89 W/m·K (a 7.5-fold increase) alongside an ultralow copper-matched coefficient of thermal expansion (12 ppm/K). Remarkably, these breakthroughs are achieved while preserving superior dielectric properties (permittivity D k = 2.52, loss tangent D f = 0.00078 @ 10 GHz). This work establishes a universal and scalable blueprint for fabricating extreme-performance PTFE substrates tailored for the stringent demands of next-generation 5G/6G telecommunications.

Synergistic Enhancement of Corrosion and Scaling Resistance in Epoxy Coatings via Multicomponent Modification With PTFE, PDMS, and Nanosilica

Zichao Yin,Lianjie Sun,Zhenhua Sun,Xu Wei,Junyi Li,Haigang Zhou,Jingjing Qi,Weidong Wang

Epoxy coatings frequently encounter scaling issues in industrial applications, where the microenvironment beneath the scaling layer often accelerates corrosion and promotes bacterial growth. To address this challenge, an epoxy coating fabricated by electrostatic spraying was modified with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and nanosilica—materials with low surface energy—to enhance its antiscaling properties. The incorporation of functional components increased the water contact angle of the coating from 92° to 145°, demonstrating a significant enhancement in hydrophobicity and antiadhesion properties. Due to the abundance of nonpolar groups and the formation of an air cushion underwater, the fabricated coating exhibited excellent antiscaling and anticorrosion properties. Compared to the pure epoxy coating, the newly developed antiscaling coating demonstrated significantly improved electrochemical performance, with current density decreasing from 3.68 × 10 −11 A/cm 2 to 5.81 × 10 −12 A/cm 2 and impedance increasing from 1590 Ω cm 2 to 3.9 × 10 8 Ω cm 2 . More notably, the coating demonstrated significantly enhanced antiscaling performance, with its average inhibition rates against BaSO 4 and SrSO 4 scaling increasing from 43.7% to 64.7% and from 41.8% to 65.2%, respectively. Combined with its excellent durability, these results demonstrate the coating's significant potential for industrial anticorrosion and antifouling applications.

Synergistic 3D Porous PTFE Membrane Skeleton and 1D HNTs Integration for High-Performance All-Solid-State Polymer Electrolytes

Zhitao Yang,Yulei Liu,Zhen Zhang,Hao Liu,Lin Fu

Incorporation of one-dimensional inorganic nanofillers into the poly(ethylene oxide)–based solid polymer electrolyte (PEO-SPEs) matrix can substantially enhance its ionic conductivity and overall electrochemical performance. However, the intrinsically low melting point of PEO and the pronounced hygroscopicity of lithium salts impart insufficient mechanical robustness to PEO-SPEs, undermining their compatibility with high-loading cathodes, reducing discharge capacities, and compromising cycling stability. To address these limitations, we fabricated a supported all-solid-state composite polymer electrolyte (SACPEs) via high-temperature, high-pressure infiltration of a molten multicomponent PEO–SPEs into a three-dimensional porous polymer membrane skeleton. The 3D skeleton provides exceptional mechanical strength, effectively suppressing lithium-dendrite growth at the electrode/electrolyte interface, while its interconnected porous network enables rapid Li+ transport. Furthermore, orientation forces during melt infiltration uniformly align the one-dimensional inorganic nanofillers along the melt-flow direction within the skeleton, thereby shortening Li+ migration pathways. Electrochemical and mechanical evaluation of the resulting SACPEs demonstrates a high ionic conductivity of 2.35 × 10–4 S cm–1, a Li+ transference number of 0.649, a tensile strength of 26.7 MPa, a high initial discharge specific capacity (181 mAh g–1), and excellent long-term cycling performance (capacity retention of 80.66% after 200 cycles at 0.1 C). These comprehensive performance metrics confirm that the SACPE meets the rigorous electrochemical and mechanical requirements for all-solid-state polymer electrolytes in next-generation lithium metal batteries.

Construction of bilayer PTFE/ceramic membrane with narrow pore size distribution for the treatment of boiler blowdown water

Ping Luo,Wenrui Li,Wei Sun,Ting Chen,Pei Liu,Xianfu Chen,Kaiyun Fu,Minghui Qiu,Yiqun Fan

A bilayer PTFE/ceramic composite membrane with a narrow pore size distribution was fabricated via a co-sintering method for efficient treatment of boiler blowdown water. A micron-sized PTFE interlayer was first deposited on a macroporous ceramic support to reduce surface pore size and prevent nanoparticle infiltration. Subsequently, a nanoparticle-based PTFE ultrafiltration top layer was formed by co-sintering with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binder, yielding a defect-free, crack-free selective layer. The resulting membrane exhibited a uniform pore size centered at 67 nm and a strong hydrophobicity. In vacuum membrane distillation, the membrane achieved a stable water flux and salt rejection above 99.9 % across a wide temperature range without wetting. It also demonstrated excellent rejection of phosphate and silicate during simulated boiler blowdown treatment, maintaining over 99.9 % removal and stable flux for more than 3000 min. These results highlight the membrane’s excellent anti-wetting, anti-fouling, and thermal stability, making it a promising candidate for the sustainable treatment of high-temperature industrial wastewater.
