Crystal structure, morphology and enhancement of luminescence properties of Cr3+-doped KZnF3 phosphor by using a HF-free hydrothermal method with different chromium sources

Yifan Yang,Yongqi Zhu,Shuang Wu,Xinyue Li,Qinan Mao,Yifan Chen,Jiasong Zhong,Yiwen Zhu

In this study, a series of near-infrared (NIR) KZnF3:Cr3+ phosphors was prepared by different chromium sources using a HF-free hydrothermal method. The influence of different chromium sources on the crystal structure, morphology, and luminescence properties of Cr3+-doped KZnF3 phosphors were systematically investigated. The results showed that the chromium source changed from CrF3·xH2O to (NH4)3CrF6 and leaded to an increased crystal field, resulting in a blue shift of the emission peak position from 803 nm to 753 nm, accompanied by the full-width half maximum (FWHM) reduced from 140 nm to 122 nm. Moreover, KZnF3:0.03Cr3+ (CrF3·xH2O) and KZnF3:0.03Cr3+ ((NH4)3CrF6) phosphors maintained 58% and 87% of their initial room-temperature intensity at 423 K, respectively. These results indicated that altering the synthetic raw materials provided new insights for designing NIR phosphors with highly thermal stability.

Ag-Doped SnSe Nanosheets for Enhanced NIR-II Light-Induced Apoptosis

Dequan Xiao,Yan Gong,Jing Zhang,Hui Liu,Lile Dong

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is one of the most aggressive and challenging subtypes with limited treatment options and poor prognosis. To overcome these obstacles, Ag-doped SnSe (ASS) nanosheets were used as photonic hyperthermia agents for treating TNBC. ASS featured a high photothermal-conversion efficiency and photon hyperthermia effect. Additionally, biosafety assessments, including hemolysis assays and histopathological analysis, confirmed that ASS was biosafety. These findings suggest that ASS, in synergy with the second near-infrared biowindow (NIR-II) light irradiation, offers a noninvasive, effective, and safe therapeutic strategy for TNBC. This innovative approach exemplifies the evolving landscape of TNBC treatment, where technology and biology converge to offer more precise and personalized therapies.

Engineered manganese-BODIPY coordinated nanoadjuvants for enhanced NIR-II photo-metalloimmunotherapy

Yushi Zhang,Xuya Yu,Lingpeng Luo,Yigang Xu,Hanjie Zhang,Zhuo Mao,Yuqin Zhang,Cuihong Yang,Lu Wang,Pengcheng Zhang,Sitong Li,Meitong Ou,Ran Luo,Dunwan Zhu,Wen Li,Lin Mei

Immunotherapy, a pivotal and promising approach for tumor treatment, has demonstrated prominent clinical efficacy. However, its effectiveness is often impeded by insufficient antitumor immune responses attributed to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). The combination of immune activation through the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway and phototherapy holds great potential for surmounting this challenge in advanced tumor immunotherapy. Herein, a novel manganese-boosted NIR-II photo-metalloimmunotherapy is proposed to synergistically enhance antitumour efficacy by fabricating Mn 2+ -BODIPY-based coordinated photo-immune nanoadjuvants (BMR), modified with tumor-targeted peptide cRGD. The obtained BMR could effectively deliver Mn 2+ to tumor sites, and immunogenic cell death (ICD) was evoked by localized photothermal ablation of tumors using NIR-II laser irradiation. Simultaneously, pH-responsive release of Mn 2+ would trigger the activation of STING pathway to promote the production of type I interferons (I-IFNs), significantly facilitating the maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) and polarization of macrophages to M1 phenotypes. Furthermore, by synergistically initiating systematic and robust antitumour immune responses, the BMR-mediated NIR-II photo-metalloimmunotherapy achieved remarkable therapeutic efficacy against both primary and lung metastasis of B16F10 tumors. Overall, in light of the versatile functionalities and synthetic flexibility of coordinated nanoadjuvants, formulated with photofunctional ligands and diverse metal ions, this work provides new insights into the design of metal coordination nanomedicine for effective antitumor photo-metalloimmunotherapy.

Strong red and NIR emission in NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/QDs nanoheterostructures

Jie Chang,Ye Liu,Jie Li,Suli Wu,Wenbin Niu,Shufen Zhang

Due to the strong tissue absorption of short-wave-length light below 600 nm, in vivo imaging based on UCNPs as luminescent probes is still limited. The NIR spectral range (700–1100 nm) and the red region (600–700 nm) are referred to as the “optical window” of the biological tissues because the light scattering, absorbance and autofluorescence of tissue are minimum in this range. Here we synthesized NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/CdS nanoheterostructures. In the nanoheterostructures, the red (700 nm) and NIR (802 nm) emissions of NaYF4:Yb,Tm were enhanced by 7.3 times, while the blue emission peak at 476 nm nearly disappeared and no peak of CdS appeared. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that the morphology of the binary nanoparticles is predominantly peanut-like and the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/CdS nanoheterostructure were assignable to both wurtzite phase CdS and hexagonal phase NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+. In comparison, introducing Cd2+ ions or S2− ions or preparation of physical mixture of NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ and CdS did not enhance the red (700 nm) and NIR (802 nm) emissions of NaYF4:Yb, Tm. These results indicated that the interactions in the NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/CdS nanoheterostructure played a key role for enhancing the NIR emission of NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ nanocrystals. QDs act as a sub energy level to mediate energy transfer of Tm3+. To evaluate the effect of other QDs on the upconverted fluorescence spectrum of NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+, NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/CdSe nanoheterostructures were also prepared by a similar method. The upconverted fluorescence spectra indicated that by conjugation with CdSe, the NIR emission at 802 nm of NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+ was also enhanced greatly.

Ultrasensitive UV-NIR broadband phototransistors based on AgBiS2–organic hybrid films

Li Jiang,Huihuang Huang,Fubing Gui,Yalun Xu,Qianqian Lin

In recent years, AgBiS2 has received great attention in optoelectronics thanks to its fascinating merits, including a suitable bandgap, large absorption coefficient from ultraviolet to near-infrared and remarkable material stability. However, the poor carrier transport properties limit its further development and applications. To address this issue, we propose a composite strategy to facilitate the carrier transport of AgBiS2 QD films. The AgBiS2–organic hybrid films demonstrated enhanced photoconductivity. Then, we fabricated phototransistors based on these blend films, and achieved a high photosensitivity (Ilight/Idark) of 1.5 × 103, a decent responsivity of up to 20 A W−1, an excellent specific detectivity of 4 × 1013 Jones under low UV illumination and remarkable device stability. These results again demonstrate the great potential of AgBiS2 for next generation solution-processed photodetectors.

Bimodal Molecule as NIR-CT Contrast Agent for Hepatoma Specific Imaging

Tianbai Shuai,Yizhou Zhou,Guoqiang Shao,Rui Yang,Letian Wang,Jinglin Wang,Jie Sun,Longfei Ren,Jintao Wang,Yan Liao,Mian Wei,Qingxiang Xu,Yuyan Li,Li Zhao

With currently available molecular imaging techniques, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a liver cancer with high mortality rates and poor treatment responses, is mostly diagnosed at its late stage. This is largely due to the lack of highly sensitive contrast agents with high liver specificity. Herein, we report a novel bimodal contrast agent molecule CNCI-1 for the effective detection of HCC at its early stage both in vitro and in vivo. The agent has high liver specificity with effective X-ray computed tomography (CT)/near-infrared (NIR) imaging functions. It has been successfully applied to in vivo NIR imaging with high sensitivity and high selectivity to the HCC region of the HepG2 tumor-xenografted mice model and LM3 orthotopic hepatoma mice model. Moreover, the agent was found to be noninvasive and hepatocarcinoma cells preferential. Furthermore, it also enhanced the tumor imaging by revealing the blood vessels nearby for the CT image acquisition in the VX2 orthotopic hepatoma rabbit model. Our design strategy provides a new avenue to develop the medical relevant bimodal contrast agents for diagnosis of HCC at its early stage.

Multifunctional Nanoplatform for Single NIR Laser-Regulated Efficient PDT/PTT/Chemotherapy

Yu Chen,Zhentan Lu,Dong Wang

The combination of phototherapy and chemotherapy with superior advantages is a promising strategy for cancer therapy. However, combination therapy is generally regulated by two different wavelengths of light or other stimuli, which results in complex operations and inevitable systemic side effects, even affecting therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we design a signal NIR light-regulated nanoplatform via the self-assembly process of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-sensitive prodrug (DTD), human serum albumin (HSA), and IR780 for combined photothermal/photodynamic therapy and chemotherapy. Upon 808 nm laser irradiation, IR780 in nanoparticles generates abundant ROS and a significant photothermal effect to achieve photothermal/photodynamic therapy. Meanwhile, the generating ROS further cleans up the thioketal link to release DOX for chemotherapy. Hence, signal NIR light can effectively control the process of combination therapy. In vivo and in vitro experiment results demonstrate that the multifunctional nanoparticles exhibit excellent antitumor efficacy via the combination of phototherapy and chemotherapy controlled by a signal NIR laser. Overall, the signal NIR light-regulated nanoparticles with combination therapy performance provide a versatile platform for enhancing antitumor efficacy.

NIR-Triggered Multifunctional NO Nanoplatform for Conquering Thermal Resistance in Biofilms

Bingshuai Zhou,Biao Dong,Songtao Hu,Wei Liu,Liheng Sun,Lin Xu,Xue Bai,Lin Wang,Manlin Qi,Hongwei Song

Photothermal treatment (PTT) has emerged as a promising avenue for biofilm elimination, yet its potential drawbacks, such as local hyperpyrexia and bacterial heat resistance, have posed challenges. To address these concerns, an innovative nanoplatform (Au@mSiO 2 -arg/ICG) is devised that integrates phototherapeutic and gas therapeutic functionalities. This multifaceted nanoplatform is composed of mesoporous silica-coated Au nanorods (Au@mSiO 2 ), supplemented with l -arginine ( l -arg) and indocyanine green (ICG), and is engineered for mild temperature PTT aimed at biofilm eradication. Au@mSiO 2 -arg/ICG nanoparticles (NPs) show excellent antibacterial effects through the generation of nitric oxide (NO) gas, heat, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) under 808 nm light irradiation. The ROS generated by ICG initiates a cascade reaction with l -arg, ultimately yielding NO gas molecules. This localized release of NO not only effectively curbs the expression of heat shock proteins 70 mitigating bacterial thermoresistance, but also reduces extracellular polymeric substance allowing better penetration of the therapeutic agents. Furthermore, this nanoplatform achieves an outstanding biofilm elimination rate of over 99% in an abscess model under 808 nm light irradiation (0.8 W·cm −2 ), thereby establishing its potential as a dependable strategy for NO-enhanced mild PTT and antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in clinical settings.

NIR-triggered and Thermoresponsive Core-shell nanoparticles for synergistic anticancer therapy

Hong Zhang,Xiao Wang,Xiaorong Yang,Zehua Wu,Qin Chen,Qiaolin Wei,Yong Guo,Quan Hu,Jia-Wei Shen

Recent advancements in cancer treatment have underscored the inadequacy of conventional monotherapies in addressing complex malignant tumors. Consequently, there is a growing interest in synergistic therapies capable of overcoming the limitations of monotherapies, leading to more personalized and effective approaches. Among these, the combination of photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy has emerged as a promising avenue for tumor management. In this study, we present a novel approach utilizing thermoresponsive mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) as a delivery system for the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin. By incorporating photothermal agent copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles into the MSN, the resulting composite material exhibits potent photothermal properties. Furthermore, the integration of an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) polymer within the silica outer layer serves as a “gatekeeper”, enabling precise control over drug release kinetics. This innovative nanomaterial effectively merges thermoresponsive behavior with PTT, thereby minimizing the collateral damage associated with traditional chemotherapy on healthy tissues. Moreover, in both in vitro studies using mouse breast carcinoma cells (4 T1) and in vivo experiments utilizing a 4 T1 tumor-bearing mouse model, our nanomaterials demonstrated synergistic effects, enhancing the anti-tumor efficacy of combined PTT and chemotherapy. With its remarkable photothermal conversion efficiency, robust stability, and biocompatibility, the UCST-responsive nanoplatform holds immense potential for clinical applications.

NIR-responsive micropatterned nanocomposite functionalized implant for sequential antibacterial and osteogenesis

Haoyan Chen,Youzhun Fan,Zhifeng Shi,Chengli Liu,Maofei Ran,Jinxia Zhai,Jun Wu,Tak Man Wong,Chengyun Ning,Peng Yu

The long-term durability of the implant is influenced by two significant clinical challenges, namely bacterial infection and fixation loosening. Conventional implant materials have failed to meet the demands of the dynamic process of infectious bone repair , which necessitates early-stage bacterial sterilization and a conducive environment for late-stage osteogenesis. Consequently, there is an urgent requirement for an implant material that can sequentially regulate antibacterial properties and promote osteogenesis. The study aimed to develop a micropatterned graphene oxide nanocomposite on titanium implant (M-NTO/GO) for the sequential management of bacterial infection and osteogenic promotion. M-NTO/GO exhibited a micropattern nanostructure surface and demonstrated responsiveness to near-infrared (NIR) light. Upon NIR light irradiation , M-NTO/GO exhibited effective antibacterial properties, achieving antibacterial rates of 96.9% and 98.6% against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. Under no-light condition, the micropatterned topography of M-NTO/GO exhibited the ability to induce directed cell growth, enhance cell adhesion and spreading, and facilitate osteogenic differentiation. These findings suggest the successful development of a functionalized micropatterned nanocomposite implant capable of sequentially regulating antibacterial and osteogenesis activity. Consequently, this highly effective strategy holds promise for expanding the potential applications of orthopedic implants.

NIR-Mediated Cu2O/Au Nanomotors for Synergistically Treating Hepatoma Carcinoma Cells

Ting Xian,Yilin Liu,Qingtao Song,Jing Li,Wenjuan Liu,Zhongwei Gu

Graphical A NIR-driven Janus Cu 2 O/Au nanomotor had been constructed to explore the synergistical therapeutic effect on hepatoma carcinoma cells. The asymmetric Au modification causes uneven heating on both sides of the Cu 2 O/Au nanomotor, resulting in autonomous motion from high to low temperature, actively targeting hepatocellular carcinoma cells. Under the synergistic effects of photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy and Cu 2 O′s own nanotoxicity, Cu 2 O/Au nanomotors exhibit highly effective killing effect on liver cancer cells. We presented a NIR-driven Janus Cu 2 O/Au nanomotor. The nanomotor has a truncated octahedral structure. By asymmetric Au evaporation, the light response range of Cu 2 O nanomotor is extended to near-infrared range, and the speed of Cu 2 O/Au nanomotors under NIR is significantly increased. In promoting apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma, except the nanotoxicity of Cu 2 O itself, the Au layer enhances the photothermal properties, allowing Cu 2 O/Au nanomotors to induce apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma cells by heating them. On the other hand, a Schottky barrier formed at the interface of Cu 2 O and Au, preventing the recombination of electrons, which makes more electrons react with biomolecules to produce toxic ROS to kill hepatocellular cells. The killing rate of hepatocellular carcinoma cells reached 87 % by the combined effect of nanotoxicity inhibition of proliferation and photothermal & photodynamic therapy (PTT & PDT). Nanomotors in combination with multiple approaches are explored as a new treatment to tumor in this article.

Multifunctional ligand modification enabling high-performance air-processed NIR perovskite QLEDs

Feixia He,Qingkai Zhang,Kaiyu Yang,Xuwen Chen,Bowen Chen,Hailong Yang,Haolin Luo,Weiguo Chen,Hailong Hu,Fushan Li

The adopted NMAI serves multifunctions: it barricades water/oxygen against ambient degradation, passivates defects to suppress non-radiative recombination, and tunes interfacial energy alignment to balance carrier dynamics. • High luminescence and air stability are simultaneously achieved in perovskite quantum dots via one additive, with PLQY reaching 87.9% and ambient stability over twice the reference. • Ambient-air fabricated NIR-PQLEDs exhibit a peak EQE of 16.15% and T 50 over 140 min, showing over 3-fold EQE and 4-fold operational lifetime relative to control devices. Near-infrared perovskite quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (NIR-PQLEDs) are promising for broad application prospects such as biological imaging and optical communication. However, due to the influence of water and oxygen, the stability of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) in air environments is usually poor, which hinders their industrial applications. In this work, by introducing multifunctional ligand 1-naphthylmethylammonium iodide (NMAI) for surface modification of PQDs, we successfully realized high-efficiency and stable NIR-PQLEDs fabricated under ambient air conditions. Here, NMAI mainly possesses the following functions: 1) Its hydrophobic aromatic naphthalene group enhances the surface hydrophobicity of PQDs and contributes to a more compact moisture-resistant ligand shell, thereby effectively suppressing water and oxygen erosion under ambient air conditions. 2) The synergistic effect of NMA + cations and I − anions achieves efficient defect passivation, thus suppressing non-radiative recombination. 3) The inherent dipole characteristic of NMAI reconstructs the surface of PQDs, optimizing interfacial energy-level alignment and balancing carrier dynamics. Consequently, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of PQD film increases from 74.4% to 87.9%, with remarkably enhanced stability in air environment. Benefiting from this strategy, air-processed NIR-PQLEDs achieve a peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 16.15%, representing a more than threefold enhancement compared to the pristine device. Meanwhile, the operational half-lifetime (T 50 ) is extended by more than fourfold to over 140 min. This work provides a novel strategy for air-compatible, low-cost, and scalable fabrication of high-performance NIR-PQLEDs, which is of great significance for advancing their optoelectronic applications in the future.
