To explore an efficient photocatalyst for NO pollution, a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic system is successfully fabricated by coupling Bi2WO6 with NH2-UiO-66 via a simple hydrothermal synthesis technique. The Z-scheme system promotes the NO photocatalytic oxidation activity with an optimum NO removal rate of 79%, which is 2.7 and 1.2 times that obtained by using only pristine Bi2WO6 and NH2-UiO-66, respectively. Simultaneously, superior selectivity for converting NO to NO3−/NO2− is observed. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of the Bi2WO6/NH2-UiO-66 hybrids is attributed to the following two aspects: (i) large specific area of NH2-UiO-66, which exposes more active sites and is beneficial to the adsorption and activation of NO; (ii) outstanding Z-scheme structure constructed between BiWO6 and NH2-UiO-66, which can improve the efficiency of the separation of electron–hole pairs and preserves the strong oxidation ability of hybrids. ESR analysis shows that ·O2− and ·OH contribute to NO removal. A possible photocatalytic mechanism of NO oxidation on the direct Z-scheme photocatalyst (BWO/2NU) under visible light irradiation is proposed. This work displays the BWO/2NU hybrid's potential for treating low-concentration air pollutants, and the proposed Z-scheme photocatalyst design and promotion mechanism may inspire more rational synthesis of highly efficient photocatalysts for NO removal.

The practical application of photocatalytic water splitting is essentially limited by the slow kinetic nature of the water oxidation process. Therefore, it is highly desirable but challenging to explore a low-cost and high-efficiency water oxidation catalyst for the aim of commercialization and industrialization. We herein report the first-time synthesis of a novel and high-efficiency visible-light-driven photocatalyst composed of flower-like Co(CO 3 ) 0.5 (OH)·0.11H 2 O (CCO) nanowires and Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) nanosheets, i.e. CCO/BWO nanocomposite, via a facile hydrothermal method. Without utilizing any additional cocatalyst, the composite of CCO/BWO in 30% weight ratio exhibits extraordinarily high photoactivity and photostability towards O 2 evolution, achieving an average O 2 generation rate of 953 µmol h −1 g −1 under visible-light irradiation (λ > 420 nm).

Improving the photogenerated carrier separation efficiency of individual semiconductor materials has always been a key challenge in photocatalysis. In this study, we synthesized a novel photocatalytic material, N-CQDs/UBWO, in situ by combining nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) derived from discarded corn stover with ultrathin Bi2WO6nanosheets (UBWO). Detailed characterization indicates that the random distribution of N-CQDs on the UBWO surface increases the specific surface area of UBWO, which is beneficial for the adsorption and degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC). More importantly, N-CQDs act as electron acceptors, promoting the effective separation of photogenerated charges, prolonging the lifetime of charge carriers in UBWO, and thereby enhancing the degradation efficiency of OTC. As a result, the optimized 3wt%N-CQDs/UBWO could degrade 85% of OTC within 40 min under visible light, with a removal rate four times that of pure Bi2WO6. The performance of photocatalytic degradation over OTC by 3wt%N-CQDs/UBWO exceeds that of most reported Bi2WO6-based photocatalysts. The EPR analysis confirmed that ∙O2−and ∙OH are the main active species in the photocatalytic degradation of OTC on 3wt%N-CQDs/UBWO. This study provides insight into designing green, low-cost, and efficient photocatalysts using CQDs derived from waste biomass and the degradation of emerging pollutants like antibiotics.

The efficient conversion of NO to NO 3 - and the generation of the by-product NO 2 are considered to be highly competitive reactions during the photocatalytic conversion of low concentrations of nitrogen oxides in the ambient atmosphere. However, achieving highly selective photocatalytic conversion of NO to NO 3 - remains a great challenge in current research. In this work, we successfully prepared a bismuth tungstate (BWO-40) with a microcrystalline domain, combines amorphous and crystalline structure, co-modified by oxygen vacancies (OVs) and bismuth (Bi) dual active sites. The composite photocatalyst exhibited a remarkable photocatalytic efficiency of 73.49%, reaching more than twice the efficiency of pure Bi 2 WO 6 , BWO-0 (26.66%), for NO conversion under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm). The photocatalytic performance of BWO-40 significantly enhanced due to the synergistic effect between Bi and OVs as well as its microcrystalline structure. This not only facilitates the utilization of solar energy but also provides additional adsorption, thus improving the activation of reactant molecules while effectively suppressing the conversion of NO into the toxic by-product NO 2 (10.82 ppb). Furthermore, in-situ DRIFTS was used to investigate the adsorption and photocatalytic conversion pathways of NO. This work provides a feasible solution for achieving the highly selective conversion from low concentration of NO to NO 3 - of about 99% and effectively inhibiting the production of NO 2 .

Here, we report a simple approach to fabricate 3D hierarchical peony-like Ag/Bi 2 WO 6 hybrid photocatalyst through one-step hydrothermal method with l -leucine as a template. The morphology and structure of the resultant materials were characterized by various analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The photocatalytic performance of Bi 2 WO 6 and Ag/Bi 2 WO 6 samples was evaluated by degrading organic dye and antibiotic in water under visible light irradiation. A series of results indicated that loaded Ag nanoparticles significantly improve the photocatalytic activity of Bi 2 WO 6 . In addition, the possible mechanism was proposed that the enhanced photocatalytic activity was resulted from the unique configuration of peony-like morphology that favorable for the adsorption of organic compounds and the high Schottky barriers between interface of Ag NPs and Bi 2 WO 6 , which promoted the transfer of photogenerated electrons from Bi 2 WO 6 to Ag NPs. Meanwhile, noble metal Ag can induce surface plasmon resonance leading to the better visible light absorption of Bi 2 WO 6 .

Biochar (BC) composite photocatalysts have attracted much attention by virtue of their high efficiency in removing endocrine disruptors (EDCs). However, there has been a lack of systematic research on the mechanism and constitutive relationship of BC on photocatalysts, which has seriously impeded the development process in this field. In this study, Bi 2 WO 6 –BC 2% composite photocatalysts were prepared by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method and used for degradation of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) and 17β-estradiol (E2) in conjunction with persulfate synergy (PS). The removal rate of EE2 and E2 by Bi 2 WO 6 –BC 2% was as high as 99.41 % (12 min) and 97.84 % (15 min), respectively. Systematic studies have shown that BC enhances the catalytic activity mainly through the following ways, increasing the specific surface area of the photocatalytic system, enriching the types of functional groups, enhancing the separation ability of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, and promoting the concentration of active free radicals. The results of the phytotoxicity experiments showed that compared to the EE2 or E2 pollutant solutions, the stem and root lengths of V. radiata increased by 93.63 % and 389.58 % in EE2 metabolites, and by 117.35 % and 160.38 % in E2 metabolites. Similarly, the stem and root lengths of P. vulgaris increased by 80.08 % and 174.91 % in EE2 metabolites, and by 188.92 % and 345.75 % in E2 metabolites. This work not only fills the gap in the study of the mechanism of action of BC, but also provides a green catalyst with very excellent photocatalytic efficiency and detoxification properties.

This work successfully synthesized Bi@Bi 2 WO 6 with oxygen vacancies (OVs) through chemical etching and systematically revealed the coupling mechanism between OVs and piezoelectric effects. In the piezo-photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), the 0.1al-BBW sample exhibited the best performance, with an apparent rate constant of 0.05468 min −1 . ERS and PFM characterizations revealed that abundant OVs were introduced by etching, leading to lattice modification and improved piezoelectric polarization. According to density functional theory (DFT) results, the piezoelectric field optimizes charge localization at OVs, strengthens band coupling, reduces carrier recombination, and facilitates the activation of H 2 O and O 2 . Furthermore, Mott-Schottky results and stress-induced simulations (0–8 %) confirmed that both piezoelectric polarization and OVs contribute synergistically to energy band restructuring. Pathway analysis showed that 1 O 2 and h + were the dominant reactive species driving the two main routes of 2,4-DCP decomposition. Overall, this work offers mechanistic insights into OVs coupling with piezoelectric and presents a viable strategy for designing advanced piezo-photocatalysts with multifunctional capabilities.

Developing and designing a rational heterojunction with efficient charge kinetics properties have been a research hotspot for improving photocatalytic performance. Herein, a surface plasmons coupled two-dimensional chemical Au/Bi 2 WO 6 -MoS 2 heterojunction was synthesized. In thus a system, Au nanoparticles are tightly attached to the sides of Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets , conducting a HEI effect with additional visible light response to inject “hot electrons” into Bi 2 WO 6 , resulting in additional charge generation. Meanwhile, few-layer MoS 2 nanosheets were chemically assembled onto ultrathin Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets via interfacial S O bonds to form a intimate 2D-2D nanojunction, the separated and injected electrons on the surface of Bi 2 WO 6 were further directional transfer to MoS 2 nanosheets through S O bonds for detoxification of heavy metal ions Cr(VI), and the corresponding holes left on Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets were applied for simultaneous degradation of tetracycline antibiotic. The photocatalytic detoxification activity of Au/Bi 2 WO 6 -MoS 2 was nearly 4.84, 3.47 and 1.90 times higher than that of pristine Bi 2 WO 6 , Au/Bi 2 WO 6 and Bi 2 WO 6 -MoS 2 composites, which could be ascribed to the effective charge kinetics steering and well manipulation of charge flow by virtue of the rational structural and compositional features. This work provides a new perspective for the construction of high-activity detoxification photocatalysts through steering charge kinetics.

A facile, efficient, precise and reliable method based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was established to separate and determine two typical quinolone antibiotics (ofloxacin and lomefloxacin) and two typical sulfonamide antibiotics (sulfadimeisoxazole and sulfadimidine). The photocatalytic degradation effects, identification of intermediate products and decomposition pathways of these four antibiotics degraded by Bi 2 MoO 6 /Bi 2 WO 6 /MWCNTs composite catalyst were analyzed using the developed HPLC-MS/MS method. It was found that all four antibiotics can be synchronously decomposed with the ultrahigh removal rates of above 95 %. Three main degradation reactions of quinolones were detected: the decarboxylation of quinolones, the ring opening reaction of piperazine and the defluorination of C–F. The main decomposition reactions of sulfonamides included the sulfonamide bond (S N) breaking at the active sites, the oxidation of the amino acids on the benzene rings , and the substitution and oxidation ring opening reaction of pyrimidine. This study not only developed a detailed isolation and identification method for the degradation pathways and mechanisms of mixed pharmaceutical pollutants, but also provides a superb photocatalyst for the removal of multiplex pharmaceutical pollutants.

Photocatalysis provides an exciting way to directly utilize solar energy to degrade environmental pollution. This process, however, suffers from rapid recombination of the photogenerated charges leading to low efficiency and instability. Herein, we report a novel MIL-88A(Fe)/Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction as a highly efficient photocatalyst for degradation of organic compounds under visible-light irradiation. When tested in 10 mg/L Rhodamine B (RhB), such catalyst can get remarkable degradation efficiency, up to 96%, at 50 min visible-light irradiation time. Significantly, it also shows super performance for Tetracycline (TC). Moreover, MIL-88A(Fe)/Bi 2 WO 6 exhibited excellent photostability and recyclability. The superior photocatalytic activity of MIL-88A(Fe)/Bi 2 WO 6 may be the formation of a heterojunction between MIL-88A(Fe) and Bi 2 WO 6 with high surface area, which provides abundant active sites to drastically promote interactions between photocatalyst and reactants. Furthermore, the related electrochemical analysis and free radicals trapping experiments indicated that both •O 2 − and h + have significant effect in the degradation process. Our findings of the work not only provide a novel insight to the design and develop MOF-based heterojunction photocatalysts but also suggest its great potential application value for environmental remediation.

Oxygen-bridged S-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /FeOCl achieves 93% DCF and 91% CBZ removal. • Self-Fenton/PMS synergy generates multiple ROS (SO 4 ·− , ·OH, 1 O 2 , ·O 2 − , h + ). • System sustains >85% removal in real waters and > 90% in 300-min flow test. The built-in electric field at oxygen-bridge-connected heterojunctions is a key driving force for regulating S-scheme charge separation and PMS activation. To address the challenge of removing persistent pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) from water, a Fe–O–W/Fe–O–Bi double‑oxygen-bridge interface was precisely engineered using an in-situ hydrothermal growth strategy, leading to the successful preparation of a direct S-scheme Bi 2 WO 6 /FeOCl heterojunction. The built-in electric field within the interface significantly promotes the directional separation of charges, enhancing light absorption and carrier utilization efficiency. The optimal Bi 2 WO 6 /FeOCl ratio (3:1) efficiently degrades DCF and CBZ in a visible light/PMS system, exhibiting good activity in the pH range of 5–7 with a moderate decrease at pH 9, along with strong resistance to water matrices. The system sustains >90% removal for 300 min in a continuous-flow reactor. Radical trapping and EPR confirm synergistic interactions among SO 4 ·− , ·OH, ·O 2 − , 1 O 2 , and h + , further enhanced by the self-Fenton effect. DFT and LC-MS analyses elucidate the transformation pathways of DCF and CBZ. TOC tests verify that only partial mineralization is achieved under current conditions, and toxicity assessments confirm significantly reduced ecological risks of residual intermediates. This study provides an efficient and stable photocatalytic-PMS synergistic system for PPCPs-contaminated water remediation.

Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 /Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalysts are successfully synthesized. • The oxygen vacancies and the Z-scheme heterojunction were formed between Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 and Bi 2 WO 6 . • The heterojunction achieves a CO production rate 3.17 and 2.78 times higher than those of pure Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 and Bi 2 WO 6 , respectively, with nearly 100% CO selectivity. Engineering sophisticated photocatalytic materials remains a critical imperative for CO 2 reduction. A novel Z-scheme Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 /Bi 2 WO 6 was synthesized in this work. Its photocatalytic performance and underlying mechanism of CO 2 photoreduction were systematically investigated. The photocatalytic evaluation demonstrates that BOB/BWO-25 delivers the most outstanding CO 2 reduction performance under atmospheric conditions without sacrificial reagents. Specifically, the catalyst CO evolution rate is 22.66 μmol g −1 h −1 , representing enhancements about 3.17-fold compared with pure Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 and 2.78-fold compared with pure Bi 2 WO 6 . Moreover, the selectivity toward CO reaches 100%. Oxygen vacancies and Z-scheme heterojunction synergistic effect can enhance photocatalytic, which facilitates charge separation and preserves reduction capability. This study provides an effective strategy for designing and fabricating Bi 2 WO 6 -based Z-scheme photocatalysts and enhancing CO 2 photoreduction efficiency.
