Matrix stiffening profoundly influences cancer cell functions and cancer progression, and the mechanosensitive Piezo1 channel is implicated in these processes. Different from what is observed in most solid tumors, the Piezo1 channel in lung cancer is down-regulated and negatively regulates cancer cell migration, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Herein, we investigated the role of Piezo1 channel in matrix stiffness regulation of lung cancer cell migration and the mechanisms in A549 cells growing on polyacrylamide (PA) hydrogels with different stiffness. Compared with soft substrate, stiff substrate promoted cell migration, down-regulated Piezo1 expression, favored filopodia formation, as well as restraining the rise in intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca 2+ ] i ). Additionally, blockade or knockdown of Piezo1 channel promoted, whereas its activation suppressed, cell migration and filopodia formation. Furthermore, reducing the [Ca 2+ ] i promoted cell migration and filopodia formation. Finally, stiff substrate induced cofilin phosphorylation, which was enhanced by inhibiting the Piezo1 channel or reducing the [Ca 2+ ] i and, conversely, suppressed by activating the Piezo1 channel. Collectively, our study has revealed that stiff matrix down-regulates the Piezo1 channel expression and thereby restrains the rise in the [Ca 2+ ] i to facilitate cofilin phosphorylation and filopodia formation, leading to an increase in lung cancer cell migration. These findings broaden our understanding of the molecular mechanism by which the Piezo1 channel functions in lung cancer differently from in other cancers.

We report a novel mechanoluminescent phosphor Li 1−x Ca x Si x Ta 1−x O 3 :0.01Pr 3+ (x = 0–0.04). The crystal structure, photoluminescence (PL), optical diffuse reflectance spectra, afterglow (AG), fluorescence decay curves, and mechanoluminescence (ML) properties were investigated. To clarify the defect types and the mechanoluminescence mechanisms, an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermoluminescence curve (TL) were measured. The dopants Ca 2+ and Si 4+ ions occupied the Li+ and Ta 5+ sites, respectively. An optimal sample Li 0.98 Ca 0.02 Si 0.02 Ta 0.98 O 3 :Pr 3+ was obtained with great enhancement in mechanoluminescence intensity, higher than that of non-doped sample LiTaO 3 :Pr 3+ by 262%. And the compression threshold, over which the ML intensity could not maintain the linear increase, has also been greatly improved. Furthermore, the stable output of Tribo-L was achieved, which was visible to the naked eye. A probable mechanism was proposed to illustrate the mechanoluminescent process in Li1-xCaxSixTa1-xO3:0.01Pr3 + (x = 0–0.04). The study indicates that adjusting trap distribution by substituting host ions may be a novel way to develop high-quality mechanoluminescence.

Mn-based phosphors with the wavelength of 700–750 nm are an important category of far-red phosphors that have promising potential in the application of plant lighting, and the higher ability of the far-red light emitting of the phosphors is beneficial to plant growth. Herein, a series of Mn 4+ - and Mn 4+ /Ca 2+ -doped double perovskite SrGd 2 Al 2 O 7 red-emitting phosphors with wavelengths centered at about 709 nm were successfully synthesized by means of a traditional high-temperature solid-state method. First-principles calculations were conducted to explore the intrinsic electronic structure of SrGd 2 Al 2 O 7 for a better understanding of the luminescence behavior in this material. Extensive analysis demonstrates that the introduction of Ca 2+ ions into the SrGd 2 Al 2 O 7 :Mn 4+ phosphor has significantly boosted the emission intensity, internal quantum efficiency, and thermal stability by 170%, 173.4%, and 113.7%, respectively, which are superior to those of most other Mn 4+ -based far-red phosphors. The mechanism of the concentration quench effect and the positive effect of co-doping Ca 2+ ions in the phosphor were extensively explored. All studies suggest that the SrGd 2 Al 2 O 7 :0.1%Mn 4+ , 11%Ca 2+ phosphor is a novel phosphor that can be used to effectively promote the growth of plants and regulate the flowering cycle. Therefore, promising applications can be anticipated from this new phosphor.

The natural halloysite nanotubes were used as the nanocontainer to load Na 2 MoO 4 corrosion inhibitor , and the release rate of Na 2 MoO 4 was further controlled by wrapped with the CaMoO 4 end stopper through adding with Ca 2+ . The variable release rates were fulfilled by the formation of CaMoO 4 end stopper with different strength, and the release time can be adjusted from one to dozens of hours. Moreover, the prepared complex corrosion inhibitor is also an acid-responsive smart material, which can quickly release the large amount of corrosion inhibitors under acidic conditions through the decomposition of insoluble CaMoO 4 complex on the surface or end of halloysite. In addition, the epoxy coating mixed with 10 wt% Ca 2+ treated Na 2 MoO 4 loaded halloysite can provide the highest corrosion resistance and sustained release of the corrosion inhibitor to achieve corrosion healing in the coating defects.

Various intracellular metal ions have closely related functional roles in the nervous system. An excess or deficiency of essential metal ions can contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, the detection of various metal ions in neurons is important for diagnosing and monitoring these diseases. In particular, single-cell analysis of multiple metal ions allows us to not only understand the cellular heterogeneity and differentiation but also determine the actual relationships among multiple metal ions in each individual cell. Aiming at the low efficient single-cell manipulation and interference of complex biological matrices within cells in the existing method for single-cell metal ion detection, in this manuscript, we present a convenient, sensitive, and reliable method to simultaneously identify and quantify multiple metal ions at the single-cell level using a microfluidic system. Using the combination of on-chip electrophoresis separation and multicolor fluorescence detection, we achieved the simultaneous analysis of Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ in single PC-12 cells and studied changes in these four metal ions in Aβ25–35-treated PC-12 cells, which is a model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The data showed that metal ions imbalances in neuron-like cells may be associated with AD induced by Aβ25–35. This method paves the way for multiple metal ion detection in single neuron-like cells, and the results provide insights regarding synergistic function of multiple metal ions in regulation of neurological diseases at the single-cell level.

Pickering emulsions (PEs) have been regarded as an effective approach to sustaining and preserving the bioactivities of essential oils. The aim of this research is to prepare a PE stabilized by chitosan/alginate nanoparticles (CS-SA NPs) for the encapsulation and stabilization of D-limonene. In this work, the influence of calcium ions (Ca2+) on the morphology and interaction of nanoparticles was studied, and then the preparation technology of CS-SA/Ca2+NPs was optimized. The results showed that the presence of Ca2+reduced the size of the nanoparticles and made them assume a spherical structure. In addition, under the conditions of 0.2 mg/mL CaCl2, 0.6 mg/mL SA, and 0.4 mg/mL CS, the CS-SA/Ca2+NPs had the smallest size (274 ± 2.51 nm) and high stability (−49 ± 0.69 mV). Secondly, the PE was prepared by emulsifying D-limonene with CS-SA/Ca2+NPs, and the NP concentrations and homogenization speeds were optimized. The results showed that the small droplet size PE could be prepared with 2 mg/mL NP and a homogenization speed of 20,000 r/min, and it had excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities. Most importantly, the emulsion showed higher activity, higher resistance to ultraviolet (UV) and a higher temperature than free D-limonene. This research provides a feasible solution for the encapsulation, protection and delivery of essential oils. Keywords:homogenization speed;thermal stability;ultraviolet stability;antibacterial activity;antioxidant activity

The Qaidam Basin has potassium- and calcium-rich oil field brine resources at high temperatures. Since the phase diagram is a powerful tool to guide the separation and purification of inorganic chemical engineering for the development of potassium resources in oil field brine, the quaternary oil field brine system (Na+, K+, Ca2+//Cl– -H2O) and its two subsystems ((Na+, Ca2+//Cl– -H2O) and (K+, Ca2+, //Cl– -H2O)) at 338.15 K were reported for the first time by the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. The compositions of the equilibrium solid phases were analyzed and identified by combined chemical analyzing and X-ray diffraction. The quaternary system has four crystallized regions corresponding to NaCl, KCl, KCl·CaCl2, and CaCl2·2H2O at 338.15 K, and the incongruent double salt KCl·CaCl2 occurred at 338.15 K. The study facilitates the enrichment of thermodynamic data and exploits brine-based potassium resources.

Accidental bleeding is an unavoidable problem in daily life. To avoid the risk of excessive blood loss, it is urgent to design a functional material that can quickly stop bleeding. In this study, an efficient wound dressing for hemostasis was investigated. Based on the characteristics that Ca 2+ and fish skin collagen (FSC) could activate the coagulation mechanism, hemostatic cotton was prepared by solvent replacement method using CaCl 2 , FSC, soluble starch (SS), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as raw materials. The cytotoxicity test showed the Ca 2+ PVA/FSC-SS hemostatic cottons had good biocompatibility. The activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) of Ca 2+ PVA/FSC-SS(4) was 35.34 s, which was 22.07 s faster than that of PVA/FSC-SS, indicating Ca 2+ PVA/FSC-SS mediated the endogenous coagulation system. In vitro coagulation test, Ca 2+ PVA/FSC-SS(4) could stop bleeding rapidly within 39.60 ± 5.16 s, and the ability of wound healing was higher than commercial product (Celox). This study developed a rapid procoagulant and hemostatic material, which had a promising application in a variety of environments.

The proposal of hybrid ion batteries, which can integrate the advantages of the single ion battery, opens up a new route for developing high-performance secondary batteries. Herein, we successfully constructed an aqueous hybrid battery comprised of polyanionic-type cathode material (Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , NVP), Zn metal anode, and aqueous Ca 2+ /Zn 2+ hybrid electrolyte. This exciting combination gives full play to not only the excellent diffusion dynamics of Ca 2+ in the NASICON (sodium super ion conductors) structure but also the electrostatic shielding effect of Ca 2+ with low reduction potential that inhibits the formation of zinc dendrites. As results, the NVP//Zn Zn/Ca hybrid battery delivers favorable specific capacity with outstanding rate performance (85.3 mAh g −1 capacity at 1 C, 60.5 mAh g −1 capacity at 20 C), and excellent cycle stability (74 % capacity retention after 1300 cycles).

Phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) technology, as artificial lighting source, is the most promising option for providing power for plant growth in future smart agricultural factories. However, developing red phosphors with the desired emission spectral range and good thermal stability is still experimental. In this study, an Mn 4+ -doped BaZrGe 3 O 9 red-emitting phosphor with remarkable thermal stability is reported. The red emission, spanning the wavelength range of 600–800 nm, matches the absorption range of chlorophyll a, b and phytochrome (P r ). Its good thermal stability at 150 °C is in addition to its emission intensity, which is 81.7 % of its room-temperature intensity. Co-doping with Ca 2+ contributes to a 1.7-fold increase in the red emission intensity at room temperature. The encapsulation of the present phosphor onto UV LED chips produces red emitting LED devices, which can be used for garlic and corn cultivation. The implementation reveals that the six-hour artificial red light illumination supplement is the most effective and significant means to promote garlic and corn growth. The as-obtained red-emitting phosphor may be a promising candidate for pc-LEDs promotion of crop growth in agricultural factories.

Ureteral stents are critical medical devices for the treatment of urinary obstruction, facilitating urine drainage and postoperative recovery. Clinically, stents are prone to bacterial adhesion and colonization, which leads to urinary tract infections in up to 30%–50% of patients. Meanwhile, minerals in urine tend to readily deposit on their surfaces and form encrustations. To address these issues, we developed a multifunctional double-network hydrogel coating, (P(AAm-co-SBMA)/SA-Ca 2+ ), through physical and chemical crosslinking. The crosslinking density of the hydrogel was optimized by adjusting the SBMA concentration. Compared with uncoated polyurethane ureteral stents, the coated stents exhibited a low friction coefficient of 0.28, a reduction of over 83%, which significantly improved surface lubricity. More importantly, the coated ureteral stents showed synergistic antibacterial adhesion (up to 90%) and anti-encrustation deposition properties. In vitro simulated urine experiments demonstrated that encrustation deposition was reduced by 84.46% after short-term immersion (14 days) and by 75.48% after long-term immersion (21 days). This novel coating provides an effective surface modification solution for solving the problems of ureteral stent infection and encrustation formation, holding significant clinical translation value.
