Hydrangea-like Ni/NiO/C composites derived from metal-organic frameworks with superior microwave absorption

Lei Lei,Zhengjun Yao,Jintang Zhou,Wenjian Zheng,Bo Wei,Jiaqi Zu,Keyu Yan

The hydrangea-like Ni/NiO/C composites have been successfully synthesized by in-situ pyrolysis stemmed from Ni-MOFs. The composition and structure can be adjusted by controlling the pyrolysis temperature, and it leads to the graphitization degree and electromagnetic parameters. A broad effective absorption bandwidth of the composite up to 5.67 GHz with the maximum reflection loss of −47.72 dB in 1.9 mm thickness. The results demonstrate hydrangea-like Ni/NiO/C composites have superior microwave absorption resulted from the synergistic effect between the unique structure, dielectric loss, and magnetic loss. Therefore, this work confirmed that hydrangea-like structure composite can be an ideal candidate for highly efficient microwave absorption materials with a facile preparation process and flexible control of electromagnetic parameters.

Fabrication of NiO-NiMoO4/PPy microspheres as high-performance anode material for lithium-ion battery

Zhang Jun-Hong,Yue Haoguo,Ma Yueqiang,Han Xiao,Mei Jie,Zhao Jinsheng,Li Yan-Mei,Zhu Yan-Rong

In this work, the spherical NiO-NiMoO 4 composite was synthesized by solvothermal route followed by calcination, and then spherical NiO-NiMoO 4 /PPy composite was synthesized by in situ polymerization of pyrrole monomer. The NiO-NiMoO 4 and NiO-NiMoO 4 /PPy microspheres with a particle size of around 1–2 μm consist of nanorods and nanosheets. Hence, NiO-NiMoO 4 /PPy anode shows a higher delithiation and lithiation capacities than NiO-NiMoO 4 at each rate. At 0.2 A g −1 , NiO-NiMoO 4 only shows an initial delithiation capacity of ∼775 mAh g −1 , and the capacity only keeps 207 mAh g −1 after 160 cycles. Nonetheless, NiO/NiMoO 4 /PPy shows an initial delithiation capacity of ~ 884 mAh g −1 , and the capacity also maintains ~ 846 mAh g −1 even after 160 cycles. The corresponding capacity retention of NiO/NiMoO 4 /PPy and NiO/NiMoO 4 are 95.7% and 26.7%, respectively. The PPy modification is a direct and effective strategy to improve the reversible capacity and cycling performance of NiO-NiMoO 4 composite.

Ultra fast electrochromic switching of nanostructured NiO films electrodeposited from choline chloride-based ionic liquid

G.F. Cai,C.D. Gu,J. Zhang,P.C. Liu,X.L. Wang,Y.H. You,J.P. Tu

Nanostructured nickel oxide (NiO) thin films were prepared by a simple electrodeposition in choline chloride-based ionic liquid followed by an oxidation in air. Uniform granules and some voids opened between these granules were presented in the polycrystalline NiO films deposited for 10 and 30   s, but the film became compact as the deposition time increased to 60   s. The optical transmittance of the film decreased with the increase of the film thickness. All the NiO films exhibit high coloration efficiency, fast electrochromic switching and good cycling durability. The ultra fast switching time (0.74   s and 0.88   s) and maximum coloration efficiency of 250   cm 2   C −1 were observed for the film deposited for 10   s.

One-step fabrication of nanostructured NiO films from deep eutectic solvent with enhanced electrochromic performance

Guo-fa Cai,Jiang-ping Tu,Chang-dong Gu,Jia-heng Zhang,Jiao Chen,Ding Zhou,Shao-jun Shi,Xiu-li Wang

Nanostructured NiO thin films were directly prepared by simple and efficient electrodeposition in a choline chloride-based ionic liquid. Uniform granules and some open voids between these granules are observed in the film deposited at 70 °C, while the film becomes compact and the NiO particles are 2–6 nm in size when the electrodeposition temperature is 90 °C. The optical transmittance of the film increased with the increase of the electrodeposition temperature. Although the electrochromic switching and reaction kinetics of the NiO film deposited at low temperature are fast due to the presence of metallic Ni and some voids, little transmittance modulation occurs in the wavelength range of 300–900 nm. In contrast, the NiO film deposited at high temperature exhibits high optical modulation of 67% at 550 nm, high coloration efficiency (98 cm2 C−1 at 400 nm, 92 cm2 C−1 at 550 nm and 51 cm2 C−1 at 750 nm), good memory effect and cycling durability.

Multiphase catalytic system enhancement of hydrogen storage performance in MgSc alloy via nanosheet-clustered NiO

Jiefei Ding,Xin Ding,Xinxiu Wang,Guanglong Li,Wenchao Cao,Xianglong Meng,Yong Zhang,Ruirun Chen

Catalytic modification can effectively reduce the kinetic barriers and enhance the reaction rate of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials. In this study, nanosheet-clustered NiO catalyst is synthesized and incorporated into MgSc solid solution alloy. The hydrogen de/sorption properties are optimized through the effects of in-situ generated nanocatalysts and external addition catalysts. Results indicate the in-situ formation of nanosized ScH 2 catalytic phases within MgSc alloy matrix, along with the generation of Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 nanophases through the reaction between NiO and Mg. In addition, a small amount of Ni maintains nanoparticles morphology through stabilization by Ni/MgO coupling effect. At 300 °C, the hydrogen storage capacity of 5 wt% NiO-modified is reached at 5.44 wt%. And the dehydrogenation capacity achieves 3.05 wt% within 5 min. The formation of multiphase interfaces during hydrogenation establishes both abundant hydrogen diffusion channels and high-density active sites. In addition, dehydrogenation performance is remarkably enhanced by the synergistic catalytic between Ni-mediated hydrogen spillover and the hydrogen pump effect of ScH 2 and Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 .

Peroxymonosulfate-assisted photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B by g-C3N4 nanoparticles modified with NiO cubes

Long He,Dan Li,Chengxin Zhou,Ming Wang,Yunlong Deng,Jian Gao

Herein, NiO cubes with {100} facets or NiO trapezohedrons with {311} facets modified graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanoparticles acidified by HCl (HCN) were fabricated to form a p-n heterojunction (NiO/HCN) for the first time. These were further used for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) in water. 8-{100}NiO/HCN exhibited the highest degradation efficiency of 98.56% in just 60 min within peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible light. It was 2.51% higher than that of 8-{311} NiO/HCN. A series of characterization and experimental results showed that introducing {100} NiO could improve both the photocatalysis and PMS activation efficiency of the g-C3N4 compared with {311} NiO. The influence of environmental parameters on RhB degradation was systematically studied as well. Stability experiments demonstrated that 8-{100}NiO/HCN maintained high catalytic performance over a period of 10 h. The degradation mechanism behind PMS activation under visible light involved several factors: the unique micron-nano interface structure, electron (e-) transfer between NiO and g-C3N4, as well as effective facilitation of PMS activation by Ni2+. These factors led to the formation of singlet oxygen (1O2), which contributed significantly to RhB degradation. Overall, this work highlights how facet design can be utilized in metal oxide cocatalysts to improve photocatalytic degradation performance.

Catalytic Ozonation of Tartrazine Dye Wastewater Using NiAl2O4/NiO@γ-Al2O3: Catalyst Preparation and Performance

Tingfeng Xue,Jing Zhang,Jingcheng Wei,Bingyan Zhu,Jianwei Song,Shuang Xu,Liwei Pan

In this study, a novel NiAl2O4/NiO@γ-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared by the impregnation-calcination method and used for the catalytic ozonation of tartrazine wastewater. The NiAl2O4/NiO@γ-Al2O3 catalyst were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiments. It was found that NiAl2O4/NiO@γ-Al2O3 significantly improved the removal of chemical oxygen demand of the dye wastewater from 40% for the direct ozone oxidation to 65%, and the ozone concentration depletion for catalytic ozonation was 120% of that for ozone alone. The catalytic activity of the catalyst did not significantly decrease after reuse for six cycles and leaching concentration of metal ions less than 1%. However, the toxicity of the dye wastewater was greatly reduced after the catalytic ozonation. The pyridine Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the catalytic ozonation reaction was related with Lewis acid sites. The presence of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anion radicals, and singlet oxygen was verified by an electron paramagnetic resonance, and the quenching experiments confirmed that the removal of organic pollutants from the tartrazine wastewater mainly relied on hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen. Therefore, the NiAl2O4/NiO@γ-Al2O3 could be an effective catalyst for the rapid catalytic ozonation of dye wastewater.

Surface Modification of Self-Assembled Composite Cathode for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells with NiO Nanoparticles

Jinpeng Zhang,Jian Zhang,Tianqi Shao,Dehe Lin,Beibei Yang,Yicheng Zhao,Yongdan Li

Surface modification with simple metal oxides is a promising strategy to improve the catalytic activity of perovskite-derived cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells. Herein, a Pr0.6Sr0.4FeO3−δ–Pr1.2Sr0.8NiO4+δ composite cathode is synthesized through a one-pot self-assembly process, and the surface of the cathode is decorated with NiO nanoparticles. The incorporation of Ni results in the oxidation of Fe3+ into Fe4+, which is beneficial for p-type conduction in the cathode. Furthermore, the formation of NiO nanoparticles facilitates the surface exchange process of oxygen. The polarization resistance of the composite cathode is 0.017 Ω cm2 at 750 °C, and a single cell with that cathode presents the highest maximum power density of 2.15 W cm–2 at 750 °C and a promising durability of 240 h. These results demonstrate that the self-assembled NiO modification provides a cobalt-free and cost-effective strategy for highly active cathode materials.

Monolithic NiO/WO3-Loaded Ceramic Fibers Enable Efficient CO2–H2O Conversion via Concentrated Photothermal Coupling

Yiqin Zhang,Ruoxuan Peng,Hongyang Zhang,Shengnan Lan,Jiancheng Zhou,Naixu Li

The intense photothermal coupling effect generated by concentrating light through Fresnel lenses can efficiently convert CO2 into high-value-added chemicals. However, the extreme high-temperature environment resulting from high photon flux simultaneously causes the agglomeration, sintering, and oxidative deactivation of catalyst powders, thereby limiting the large-scale application of concentrated photocatalytic technology. Here, we constructed a high-temperature-resistant monolithic catalyst by in situ growth of NiO/WO3 nanosheets on the surface of the silica–alumina fiber material (denoted as NiO/WO3/SAF) and applied it to concentrated solar-driven CO2–H2O catalytic conversion. During the concentrated photocatalytic process, NiO/WO3/SAF exhibited superior cycling stability compared to NiO/WO3 powder, which could be attributed to the excellent dispersion, stable anchoring, and thermal insulation effects provided by the SAF support for NiO/WO3. Furthermore, under the assistance of oxygen vacancy-induced photothermal effect in WO3, the high-energy and high-density charge carriers generated by concentrated light facilitated CO2 reduction at electron-rich NiO active sites. Consequently, under concentrated irradiation of 4.0 W·cm–2, NiO/WO3/SAF achieved a solar-to-chemical energy conversion efficiency of 0.37‰, with CO and CH4 yields of 461.7 μmol·g–1·h–1 and 125.7 μmol·g–1·h–1, respectively. This work provides a valuable strategy for the industrial development of solar-driven CO2 utilization.

High-Performance Artificial Synapse Device Based on Cs3Bi2Br9/NiO Heterostructure for Bio-Inspired Neuromorphic Computing

Xiuqing Cao,Wenfei Li,Qingqing Zheng,Juan Meng,Leilei Yang,Libin Wang,Yuyang Huang,Shoulei Xu,Wen Deng

The development of energy-efficient and biocompatible artificial synapses is essential to advance neuromorphic computing. Bismuth-based perovskites are promising candidates to replace toxic lead-based perovskites in resistive switching devices owing to their exceptional optoelectronic properties, high environmental friendliness, and stability. Here, we present a lead-free Cs3Bi2Br9/NiO heterostructure memristor capable of mimicking biological synaptic functions with exceptional robustness. By engineering a heterostructure with a NiO layer, ion migration in Cs3Bi2Br9 is spatially confined, achieving a resistance switching change rate of less than 7.37% between cycles and enhanced long-term stability in ambient air (60 days). This Cs3Bi2Br9/NiO memristor exhibits excellent stability, impressive memory retention time (>7 × 103 s), durability (>100 cycles), good on/off ratio, and basic synaptic behavior. Furthermore, the training results of 200 data achieved an accuracy rate of 95.46% in the MNIST handwritten digit recognition task, which was superior to traditional analog neural networks. This work not only highlights the significant potential of lead-free perovskites for sustainable neuromorphic hardware but also provides a scalable preparation path for biocompatible electronics.

NiO/ZnCdS Nanocomposite as an Efficient and Stable Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalyst for CO2 Photoreduction

Jing Fan,Shizhen Gao,Yanan Yang,Yuming Dong,Qi Qi,Fenhong Song,Jie Liu

As the world grapples with energy shortages and environmental challenges, photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has emerged as a game-changing solution in sustainable technology. By converting carbon dioxide into high-value hydrocarbon fuels, this innovative approach not only helps combat climate change but also paves the way for a cleaner, greener energy future. Developing high-performance, low-energy-consumption, and long-term stable photocatalysts remains a critical challenge in advancing sustainable technologies. In this study, the plate-like NiO supported ZnCdS nanoparticles with high stability is prepared by solvothermal method. Compared with ZnCdS and NiO, the photocatalytic properties of the composite materials are obviously improved. As a consequence, the 12NiO/ZnCdS composite exhibited CO evolution rates of 71.13 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 , 6.8 times higher than those of pristine ZnCdS. The selectivity toward CO reached 75%. Characterization results confirmed the successful synthesis of the catalyst, where the interfacial interaction between composite components formed a built-in electric field. This mechanism afforded more active sites, enhanced light absorption properties, and promoted carrier migration rate under photoexcitation. The efficient charge separation not only suppressed photo-corrosion but also enhanced the catalyst's reductive capacity for CO 2 reduction. This study establishes a novel design paradigm for engineering highly stable ZnCdS-based photocatalysts toward solar-driven CO 2 conversion, offering compelling inspiration for material innovation. Furthermore, the fundamental principles elucidated herein provide a valuable framework to guide future exploration in related energy-transduction technologies.

Strain-Regulated Pt–NiO@Ni Sub-Micron Particles Achieving Bifunctional Electrocatalysis for Zinc–Air Battery

Fan Zhang,Renjie Ji,Xiaoyang Zhu,Hongke Li,Yating Wang,Jingpeng Wang,Fei Wang,Hongbo Lan

Highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have always been the key factors to affect the performance of zinc–air batteries. However, integrating the independent reaction sites of ORR and OER in a catalyst remains a major challenge. Herein, a collaborative strategy based on defect induction and doping is proposed to prepare the strain-regulated Pt–NiO@Ni sub-micron particles (Pt–NiO@Ni SP). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of tensile strain and Pt-doped, the metallic Ni-based sub-micron particles with tensile strain as the catalyst carriers can effectively optimize the electronic distribution of atomic structures in Pt and NiO on the surface of particles, leading to reduce the energy barrier of intermediates for ORR and OER. Consequently, the Pt–NiO@Ni SP exhibits outstanding bifunctional catalytic activity with the ΔE index of 0.65 V under a low Pt loading, outperforming that of the benchmark Pt/C+IrO 2 catalysts (0.76 V). Impressively, the Pt–NiO@Ni SP-based liquid zinc–air battery develops a high open-circuit potential (1.47 V), excellent energy density (188.2 mW cm −2 ), and favorable cyclic charge–discharge cycling durability (200 h at 20 mA cm −2 ). This work provides an innovative avenue for the rational construction of highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for practical applications.
