Photocatalytic oxidation of amines to high value-added imines is crucial but challenging. The adsorption ability to reactant molecules and the charge separation ability are important factors affecting the reactivity. Different facets of monoclinic BiVO4 (m-BiVO4) have varied electronic structures, leading to differences in the adsorption ability and charge separation ability. Thus, tailoring the exposed facets is a promising strategy to optimize the reactivity. Herein, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that for m-BiVO4, both the benzylamine (BnNH2) adsorption ability and charge separation ability of {101} facets were stronger than those of {110} facets. These results motivate us to synthesize m-BiVO4 quadrangular nanoprisms (Q-BiVO4) with highly exposed {101} facets through a colloidal two-phase method. Q-BiVO4 exhibits highly enhanced charge separation efficiency and excellent photocatalytic performance for oxidizing BnNH2 to N-benzylidenebenzylamine (N-BB). More impressively, the efficient charge transfer between Q-BiVO4 and BnNH2 was directly confirmed via single-particle spectroscopy in situ. This work provides direct evidence to deeply understand the interaction between Q-BiVO4 and the reactant molecules and provides insights for rational design of photocatalysts with specific exposed facets for selective oxidation of amines.

The decahedral morphology of BiVO 4 and ZnCr-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanosheets enables the construction of a BiVO 4 @LDHs Z -scheme heterojunction (BiVO 4 as core and LDHs as a shell) for photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin, typical antibiotic. The effects of initial concentration of norfloxacin, catalyst loading, reaction temperature, and pH value on the performance of photodegradation were studied. It was found that the removal of norfloxacin can reach 90.3% under the optimized conditions. The core-shell structure enhances the specific surface area, improves the energetic alignment of the band structures, and produces enough hydroxyl and superoxide radicals to degrade norfloxacin. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that a built-in electric field is formed between ZnCr-LDHs and BiVO 4 , which promotes the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the valence band of ZnCr–LDHs to the conduction band of BiVO 4 . This transfer accelerates the flow of photogenerated electrons and reduces the recombination of electron-hole pairs, so that BiVO 4 @LDHs heterojunction shows excellent photocatalytic activity for norfloxacin.

The photoelectrochemical water oxidation ability of BiVO 4 is usually restrained by its low separation efficiency of the photogenerated charge and slow kinetics for water oxidation. Here, FeCoS 2 bimetallic sulfide nanoparticles are successfully coated on BiVO 4 photoanode to address these problems. The photocurrent density of FeCoS 2 /BiVO 4 photoanode is 3.08 times that of BiVO 4 photoanode. Furthermore, the charge separation efficiency can reach 75% and the charge injection efficiency reaches nearly 78%. The onset potential of FeCoS 2 /BiVO 4 shifts 300 mV negatively, while the incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency value of FeCoS 2 /BiVO 4 is 2.86 folds of BiVO 4 . The enhancement benefits from the loading of FeCoS 2 , which promotes the separation of photogenerated electron and hole, and inhibits the recombination of photogenerated charge and hole.

Photoinduced charge separation and transfer has been recognized as one of the core factors affecting the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of BiVO4 based photoanodes. To achieve a higher charge separation efficiency, modulating the surface band edge of BiVO4-based photoanodes could be regarded as the best choice but still a challenge. Herein, first, it was confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations that pristine BiVO4 could form a type-II heterojunction with BiVO4–VBi (replacing Bi sites with V in BiVO4), which could be used to enhance carrier separation. Then we use a gas-phase cation exchange (CA) method to in situ modulate the surface band edge of the BiVO4 photoanode by partially replacing Bi on the surface with V to form a V-rich surface. The charge separation efficiency of the optimized V-rich BiVO4 (V/BVO) photoanode is significantly enhanced from 56.5% to 81.5% compared to pristine BiVO4. As expected, it also displays a higher photocurrent density of 2.87 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (under AM 1.5G illumination), which is nearly 3.2 times higher compared with pristine BiVO4. Upon further loading the FeOOH cocatalyst, the photocurrent of the V/BVO/FeOOH photoanode reached 4.26 mA cm−2 due to the boosted surface water oxidation properties. This work sheds light on a simple strategy to regulate surface band edges for designing highly efficient photoanodes.

Broadening light absorption and improving charge carrier separation are very critical to boost the water splitting efficiency in photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems. We herein reported a heterostructured photoanode consisting of BiVO4 and eco-friendly, near-infrared (NIR) CuInSeS@ZnS core–shell quantum dots (QDs) for PEC water oxidation. The decoration of core–shell QDs concurrently extends the absorption range of BiVO4 from the ultraviolet–visible to NIR region and promotes the effective separation and transfer of photo-excited electrons and holes. Without any sacrificial agents and co-catalysts, the as-fabricated NIR core–shell QDs/BiVO4 heterostructured photoanodes exhibit an approximately fourfold higher photocurrent density than that of the bare BiVO4, up to 3.17 mA cm–2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. It is revealed that both a suitable band alignment and an intimate interfacial junction between QDs and BiVO4 are the main factors that result in enhanced charge separation and transfer efficiencies. We also highlight that the NIR CISeS QDs passivated with a ZnS shell can suppress the non-radiative recombination and enhance the stability of the QD photoanodes for optimized PEC performance. This work provides a facile and effective approach to boost the water oxidation efficiency of semiconductor photoanodes via utilizing NIR core–shell QDs as a light sensitizer and charge carrier separator.

Strategy of designing new-structured semiconductor photocatalysts with great electron-hole pairs separation is meaningful for improving the photocatalytic pollution abatement. Herein, on the basis of decahedral BiVO 4 with largely exposed (040) crystal facet, p-n hetero-nanostructured NiS@(040)-BiVO 4 catalysts with various molar ratio of NiS were fabricated by a facile two-step hydrothermal method to study the photo-degradation activities under visible-light irradiation. To photo-degrade anion methyl orange (MO), cation rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracyclines (TC), such nanostructures can all exhibit excellent photocatalytic activities . Compared with pure (040)-BiVO 4 and NiS nanoparticles , 0.6 M ratio of NiS@(040)-BiVO 4 possesses 8.6, 8.9 and 6.5 times higher photocatalytic capacity (MO: 98.6%, RhB: 99.1%, TC: 98.4%) and 49.2, 64.2 and 27.7 times faster photocatalytic rate (MO: 8.4060 h −1 , RhB: 8.2854 h −1 , TC: 7.6230 h −1 ). Detailed analyses show the superior light-harvesting, higher photocurrent response, excellent charge separation and improved charge transport properties are the main factors resulting the high efficient photocatalytic performance of NiS@(040)-BiVO 4 nanostructures. Besides, the forming of facet isotype heterojunctions between (040) and (220) lattice planes in BiVO 4 can also help to get more active photo-induced electrons for photocatalysis .

The photoelectrochemical N 2 reduction reaction (PEC NRR) is extremely charming to the synthetic ammonia (NH 3 ), for its mild operating conditions and low carbon footprint. Taking account of the strong chemical inertness of N 2 and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction, it is necessary to explore a robust and stable photoelectrocatalyst. Herein, a robust p-type BiVO 4 (p-BiVO 4 ) photocathode is firstly reported for NRR under ambient conditions. Interestingly, V sites are proved as the mainly ideal active center for N 2 adsorption/activation based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The ammonia evolution rate ( V NH3 : 11.6 × 10 −8 mol h −1 cm −2 ) and Faradaic efficiency (16.2%) were obtained at −0.1 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M Li 2 SO 4 solution, outperforming most of the photoelectrocatalysts reported thus far. Moreover, the 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance result confirmed that the source of N was completely from the feeding N 2 gas. This work provided a new opportunity to tap the V-based photocathode in the field of PEC NRR.

Mixed potential NH 3 sensors with La 9.95 K 0.05 Si 5 AlO 26.45 (LKSAO) as the solid electrolyte and Bi 1-x Ag x VO 4- δ as the sensing electrode (SE) were developed. Bi 1-x Ag x VO 4- δ was produced by solid state reaction and then characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM and EDS. As revealed from the results, The BiVO 4 samples exhibit an unchanged crystalline structure after Ag doping molar amount x≤0.2, accompanied by the growth of the particle. The sensor based on Bi 1-x Ag x VO 4 - δ exhibit the noticeably enhanced sensing performance to NH 3 in contrast to the sensor using BiVO 4 , including its larger response potential (Δ V ) and higher sensitivity. For instance, the sensors based on BiVO 4 and Bi 0.8 Ag 0.2 VO 4 - δ at 400 °C exhibit the sensitivities of -28.1 and -77.3 mV/decade, respectively. Nevertheless, by Ag doping, there is no effective improvement of the anti-interference ability of the sensor against NO and NO 2 . To address the mentioned problem, CuO, NiO and La 0.8 Sr 0.2 MnO 3 (LSM) were used as reference electrodes (RE). As suggested from the results, using CuO and NiO as the reference electrodes can obviously reduce the cross-sensitivity of the sensor to NO and NO 2 , whereas the sensitivity slightly decrease.

Characterized as by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra techniques, BiVO 4 photocatalyst was hydrothermally synthesized. The photocatalytic degradation mechanisms of ibuprofen (IBP) were evaluated in aqueous media via BiVO 4 . Results demonstrated that the prepared photocatalyst corresponded to phase-pure monoclinic scheelite BiVO 4 . The synthesized BiVO 4 showed superior photocatalytic properties under the irradiation of visible-light. The photocatalytic degradation rate of IBP decreased with an increase in the initial IBP concentration. The degradation process followed first-order kinetics model. At an IBP concentration of 10 mg L −1 , while a BiVO 4 concentration of 5.0 g L −1 with pH value of 4.5, the rate of IBP degradation was obtained as 90% after 25 min. The photocatalytic degradation of IBP was primarily accomplished via the generation of superoxide radical ( O 2 • − ) and hydroxyl radicals ( • OH). During the process of degradation, part of the • OH was converted from the O 2 • − . The direct oxidation of holes (h + ) made a minimal contribution to the degradation of IBP.

Visible-light-driven bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) photocatalysts were prepared by the co-precipitation method. The BiVO 4 samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, UV–visible diffuse reflectance, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), photocurrent, and as well as electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared BiVO 4 samples was tested through the photocatalytic oxidation of glyphosate under visible light irradiation. The dark yellow amorphous BiVO 4 powder was prepared by the HAc method after drying at 70 °C, but the bright yellow monoclinic BiVO 4 was obtained after keeping at room temperature in the air for several days. The dependence of the room temperature crystallization on moisture can explain the low crystallization temperature found in this work. The BiVO 4 sample calcined at 400 °C by the HAc method showed the highest photocatalytic activity for glyphosate degradation under visible light irradiation because of its high charge separation efficiency proven by EIS and photocurrent.

In this study, ZnFe 2 O 4 , BiVO 4 , and ZnFe 2 O 4 /BiVO 4 /rGO materials were synthesized using the hydrothermal method in mild conditions to study the oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation process. The results on surface morphology, functional group, structure, and optical and electrochemical characteristics revealed that ZnFe 2 O 4 /BiVO 4 /rGO were successfully prepared with high purity and good distribution of chemical elements. The impact of different parameters like pH, catalyst load, reaction time, initial OTC concentration, and the presence of ozone-nanobubbles on the OTC degradation efficiency was systematically examined to obtain optimal treatment conditions. Synergic effects between ozone-nanobubbles and ZnFe 2 O 4 /BiVO 4 /rGO heterojunction led to an enhancement of over 20 % of OTC degradation yield. The OTC degradation reached 96.3 % within 100 min at optimal conditions (pH 7.0, [Cat.] = 0.5 g/L, and [OTC] = 20 mg/L). The combination of ZnFe 2 O 4 and BiVO 4 allowed to benefit from the generation of both effective electrons and holes, which enhanced the generation rate of both superoxide and hydroxyl radicals responsible for degrading the pollutant in water while rGO sheets contributed to slowing down the recombination rate between electrons and holes and improving the photocatalytic activities of the ZnFe 2 O 4 /BiVO 4 /rGO. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analyses were deployed to figure out intermediate substances and possible degradation pathways of the OTC degradation process. The ZnFe 2 O 4 /BiVO 4 /rGO heterojunction exhibited a pretty good durability and stability, and was easily recovered with the aid of a magnet. The toxicity of the by-products was significantly declined compared to the OTC antibiotic.

The four-electron water oxidation reaction in photoelectrochemical systems poses a major challenge to efficiently converting solar energy into chemical energy amid the global energy crisis. Herein, we report a strategy to develop a photoelectrochemical system using BiVO 4 /Bi 4 V 2 O 10 isometallic heterojunction photoanodes paired with FeOOH/NiOOH cocatalysts to enhance water oxidation in neutral electrolytes. The results demonstrate that the BiVO 4 /Bi 4 V 2 O 10 /FeOOH/NiOOH photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 4.48 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode and an applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 1.69 % at 0.63 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode—significantly outperforming bare BiVO 4 . This enhanced photoelectrochemical performance is attributed to the identical elemental composition and well-aligned energy band positions of Bi 4 V 2 O 10 and BiVO 4 , which minimize charge recombination at the interface. Additionally, the FeOOH/NiOOH double-layer cocatalyst facilitates rapid transfer of photogenerated carriers, as confirmed by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and transient photovoltage measurements. This approach provides a novel and effective pathway for advancing high-efficiency photoelectrochemical cells.
