The engineering of electro-assisted adsorption reactors provides potential perspectives to cooperate electrochemical technology and adsorption process for valid elimination of emerging micropollutants in wastewater. Herein, electro-responsive adsorbent is prepared through oxygen plasma-modification of carbon nanotubes (O-CNTs), followed by molding with epoxy resin and carbonization subsequently. The surface and chemical properties of pristine and modified CNTs are characterized by TEM imaging, XPS analysis, Raman, and FTIR spectroscopy , which indicate the successful introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups on CNTs. The electrically enhanced adsorption performance of organic pollutants on O-CNTs is investigated under different external electric potentials, electrolyte concentrations, and pH values. At the applied potential of +0.6 V, the adsorption capacitive of O-CNTs for aniline and phenol are boosted by 2.6 and 3.3 times than that under open circuit (OC) condition, which has an excellent electro-adsorption capacity of 42.12 mg/g for phenol and 41.58 mg/g for aniline, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms of aniline and phenol on pristine CNTs and O-CNTs are evaluated through the modeling fitting of adsorption behavior. The π-π interaction is supposed to be enhanced between the π-electrons of the oxygen-free Lewis basic sites on the graphite layer of O-CNTs and the free electrons on the aromatic rings of the aniline and phenol molecules. This work provides a practical synthetization of electro-responsive O-CNTs adsorbent through plasma technology and the corresponding electrically-enhanced elimination process of micropollutants. More significantly, this finding offers an electro-regulation strategy for CNT-based adsorption material to achieve both high adsorption capacity and high efficiency in contaminated-water treatment.

Yarn-based strain sensors increasingly garner attention for their potential applications in intelligent wearable electronic devices. Developing highly elastic conductive composite yarns and integrating them into fabrics poses a significant challenge in manufacturing flexible electronic devices. In this study, a polyurethane (PU)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite nanofiber yarn was successfully and continuously prepared using a simple conjugate spinning technique. The resulting yarn exhibited excellent mechanical properties, with a high tensile strength of up to 56.7 MPa and an elongation at break of 504 %. A yarn with a dual conductive network was created using CNTs ink dip-coating. It demonstrated excellent conductivity (8.77 S/cm), exceptional linear variation, and reusability. The sensor remained stable after 1000 cycles of testing, exhibiting a relative electrical resistance change of up to 594 % under a strain of 350 %. Additionally, taking advantage of the inherent knittability of one-dimensional yarn structures, a susceptible wearable textile-type strain sensor was successfully developed using textile knitting technology. This sensor can be directly attached to the surface of the human body for real-time monitoring of human body dynamics. This sensor showcases significant promise for use in flexible, intelligent, wearable electronic devices.

Carbon-based nano-materials are excellent candidates for constructing conductive sensing networks in flexible polymer matrix, which is widely used. However, it remains a challenge to improve the flexibility and sensitivity of multifunctional sensor by synergistically combining several conductive materials in the sensor fabrication processes. In this study, graphene (GR) dopped thermoplastic polyurethane (GPU) was adopted as the matrix material with surface grafting of carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) and silver nano-particles (Ag) for fabricating fibrous membranes by electrospinning and ultrasonic adsorption. Then GPU/CNTs@Ag-based sensors were made and tested for their piezo-resistive and strain sensing properties. The results showed that GR and Ag nano-particles increased the initial piezo-resistance response, and the piezo-resistive sensor had the sensitivity of 0.08 kPa-1 within 0-6 kPa with the response/recovery time of 15 ms/35 ms. The strain sensor performed well up to 400% deformation with gauge factor of 349.8, and response/recovery time of 68 ms/199 ms. The sensors had stability for more than 5,000 cycles. The sensors showed excellent detection of human body movements including limb motion, respiration, and muscle rhythm. A 4×4 piezo-resistive array was fabricated and the corresponding data acquisition system have been developed to monitor the real-time signals of external stress distribution. Therefore, the GPU/CNTs@Ag sensors fabricated with the novel design strategy demonstrated considerable prospective applications such as human motion detection, smart skin, and machine haptics.

Covalent organic framework materials (COFs) are a new class of crystalline porous polymers with high porosity, robust frame structure, and uniform dispersion atoms, but lower conductivity normally. Given this, we in situ prepared a cobalt-porphyrin-based COF modified with CNTs via Schiff base condensation reaction for the oxygen evolution reaction, without a high-temperature pyrolysis process . The electrocatalysts exhibit outstanding oxygen evolution reaction activity because of the uniform distribution of active centers and the synergistic effects between Co-COF and CNTs. The results show that Co-COF/3 mg CNT electrocatalyst exhibits an overpotential of 376 mV and a low Tafel slope of 61 mV dec −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the alkaline solution with pH = 13.6. Moreover, the chronopotentiometry measurements manifest that the as-prepared electrocatalysts are superior superiorly stable during the long-term OER process, retaining 93% of their initial current density after 7 h of continuous measurement. Thus, this work proposes a convenient method for fabricating effective OER electrocatalysts directly using COF-based material in energy conversion.

The presence of phenol in coal-chemical engineering wastewater is considered a serious environmental issue. The use of enzymes to degrade phenol has received wide attention. G-quadruplex can combine with hemin to form G-quadruplex/hemin, which shows peroxidase-like activity and can be used to degrade phenol. In this work, a novel CNTs-NH2@G-quadruplex/hemin was designed using a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) that contained G-rich fragments and T-rich fragments. The G-rich fragments assembled with the hemin to form G-quadruplex/hemin; the pyrimidine group of the T-rich fragment could form stable chemical bonds with the amino group, which could be used for immobilization. Characterization analysis of FTIR, XRD and TEM showed that the CNTs-NH2@G-quadruplex/hemin was successfully prepared. Meanwhile, the activity and phenol degradation ability for CNTs-NH2@G-quadruplex/hemin were studied in detail, and the effects of pH, temperature, initial phenol concentration, H2O2 concentration and reusability on the degradation efficiency of phenol were also explored. The results showed that when immobilized, the CNTs-NH2@G-quadruplex/hemin presented good activity, especially under conditions of temperature 30 °C and pH 7.0. Notably, the maximum reaction velocity of CNTs-NH2@G-quadruplex/hemin was increased from 0.016 mM mg−1 min−1 (free enzyme) to 0.056 mM mg−1 min−1. For phenol degradation ability, it was observed that under the conditions of temperature 30 °C, pH 7.0, initial phenol concentration 40 mg L−1, H2O2 concentration 120 mM, enzyme dose 40 mg L−1, more than 90% of phenol could be degraded within 600 min. In addition, the CNTs-NH2@G-quadruplex/hemin still maintained high activity after 10 cycles of phenol removal, demonstrating its appealing potential for practical applications.

Herein, we report a high-performance electrocatalyst for the lattice-oxygen-mediated (LOM) alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a key process for green hydrogen production. By employing a simple solvothermal and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach, we successfully synthesized CNT-bridged Ni/Co bimetallic nanoparticles on a Co3O4 nanoarray matrix supported by nickel foam (NF). The in situ grown CNTs and Ni/Co nanoparticles introduce abundant oxygen vacancies (Ov), significantly lowering the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) of *OOH desorption and enhancing the OER kinetics. Additionally, edge dislocations in Co nanoparticles induce lattice distortion and strain modulation, optimizing electron transfer and boosting catalytic efficiency and stability. As a result, the Ni/Co-CNTs-Co3O4/NF electrocatalyst achieves an ultralow overpotential of just 133 mV at 10 mA cm–2, maintaining structural integrity and excellent stability over 72 h at 20 mA cm–2. Theoretical calculations further confirm that Ni/Co nanoparticle incorporation tunes the d-band center, facilitating the adsorption–desorption balance of oxygen-containing intermediates and accelerating the OER process. When integrated into an alkaline electrolyzer, the Ni/Co-CNTs-Co3O4/NF electrodes demonstrate a remarkably low operating voltage of 1.58 V at 10 mA cm–2 and impressive durability for over 24 h at 20 mA cm–2. These findings highlight the strong potential of the Ni/Co-CNTs-Co3O4/NF electrocatalyst for the application of scalable, high-efficiency water splitting technology.

The annealing approach is usually used to synthesize carbon-based materials. We use polystyrene (PS) microspheres as a template to composite with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) loaded by Cu-Ni ions. After One-step high-temperature treatment, the PS microspheres disappear, and the composite materials become a three-dimensional porous structure. At the meantime, the Cu-Ni ions are reduced and attached to the material (CNTs/Cu-Ni/CP (CMP)). Then, the CMP material is coated with Polyaniline (PANI). The two-step high-temperature treatment accomplishes the Nitrogen-doped process of the material (CNTs/Cu-Ni/CP@CPANI (CMPN)). Electrochemical analysis indicates that materials have a high specific capacitance value (356F/g at 0.5 A/g). After 10,000 cycles of charging and discharging, the capacitance retention rate is 92.57 %. The assembled symmetrical supercapacitor possesses outstanding energy and power density (11.92 Wh kg −1 at 700.73 W kg −1 ).

Graphical A Co/CoO@NC/CNT-10 catalyst was effectively synthesized using melamine-assisted pyrolysis with Co-MOF as the precursor. With the synergistic effect of metal species, oxygen defects and N-doped carbon nanotubes, the intrinsic activity and electron transfer ability of the catalysts were greatly improved, showing excellent electrocatalytic oxygen reduction performance. Low-cost and high-efficiency oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts are the basis for large-scale applications of electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, cobalt and oxygen vacancy-rich cobalt oxide encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon and carbon nanotubes (Co/CoO@NC-CNTs) have been prepared by direct solid-state pyrolysis of Co-MOF. The carbon morphology, oxygen vacancy content and type of nitrogen can be finely tuned by mixing Co-MOF with proper amounts of melamine. The optimized material has an interwoven CNT structure with abundant micro- and mesopores, suitable nitrogen type and certain number of oxygen vacancies and exhibiting outstanding ORR electrocatalytic performance in alkaline media with an onset potential of 0.96 V and a half-wave potential of 0.88 V vs RHE, which is higher than 20 wt% Pt/C, as well as being highly stable and well resistant to methanol.

Bamboo-like porous carbon nanotubes (CNTs) encapsulated Zn 3 V 3 O 8 nanoparticles with high filling uniformity were synthesized for the first time using polymer nanotubes as the carbon source through a simple encapsulation–calcination strategy. The porous CNTs are a good encapsulation matrix for the Zn 3 V 3 O 8 nanoparticles because of large internal cavity, good electrical conductivity , high surface area and high flexibility. As anodes for lithium ion batteries , this composite exhibits excellent capacity (1013.1 mA h g −1 at 200 mA g −1 ), good rate capability (329.3 mA h g −1 at 8000 mA g −1 ) and cycling stability (470.5 mA h g −1 after 300 cycles at 3000 mA g −1 ). The one-dimensional encapsulation matrix of CNTs in the composites with a unique structure provides high conductivity, prevents the exfoliation of Zn 3 V 3 O 8 nanoparticles and accommodates the volume changes. Besides, the composite electrode has a multistage pore structure , which can shorten the transmission distance of Li + ions and electrons. As a result, the encapsulated nanocomposite shows excellent performances.

CNTs–C@TiO 2 composite with 3D networks as electrode has been synthesized for lithium ion batteries (LIBs)/sodium ion batteries (SIBs) by a traditional solvothermal process. The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, field emission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The continuous 3D conductive networks, which consisted of acid-treated CNTs, provided numerous attachment sites for TiO 2 particles and carbon layers (similar to a shell) produced by the Ti 4+ -induced polymerization of ethylene glycol, thereby promoting electron and ion transfer. The composites contained 10.09 wt% CNTs (excellent conductor) and 12.75 wt% pyrolytic carbon. The Raman spectra confirmed the high degree of graphitization of the composites, and the improved conductivity resulted in outstanding electrochemical behavior. The electrochemical performance in the Li + /Na + storage of CNTs–C@TiO 2 composites was greatly enhanced, as revealed by this material’s outstanding capacity of 205 mA h g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 after 200 scanning cycles for LIBs and 148 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 over 100 cycles for SIBs.

Coupling Co-Ni bimetallic oxides with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is recognized an effective strategy to enhance the performance of supercapacitors. In this work, porous Ni x Co 3−x O 4 /CNTs nanocomposites are prepared through in situ growth of ZIF-67 precursor onto CNTs followed by subsequent annealing. The obtained Ni x Co 3−x O 4 /CNTs combine the promising high storage performance of porous Ni x Co 3−x O 4 with the excellent conductivity of CNTs. When test in three-electrode system, the electrode materials exhibit a high specific capacitance of 668 F/g at 1 A g −1 , a good rate capability of 91.60% retention from 1 to 10 A g −1 and good cycling stability of 91.20% retention after 3500 cycles in 2.0 M KOH electrolyte. Furthermore, the Ni x Co 3−x O 4 /CNTs are tested in two-electrode configuration, showing a high energy density of 23.56 Wh kg −1 at power density of 800.15 W kg −1 and outstanding cycling stability of 93.75% retention after 3000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of the designed nanomaterials can be ascribed to the synergy between the CNTs and Ni x Co 3−x O 4 .

Photoreforming of plastic waste is a novel approach, which can not only degrade plastic waste into valuable chemicals, but also produce high-energy-density hydrogen fuels. Here, we developed an in-situ derived carbon nitride-carbon nanotubes-NiMo hybrids via NiMo-assisted catalysis route, which works as an efficient and stable photocatalyst for plastics photoreforming. The strong π-π interaction between in-situ derived CNTs and CN promotes electron transfer, increases carrier lifetime and improves photocatalytic activity. The DFT calculations and single-particle PL quenching phenomenon confirmed the strong interface effect and charge transport for CN-CNTs-NM. In addition, the strong interaction between photocatalyst and ethylene glycol in plastics was observed in situ by single-particle PL. This work provides a smart strategy of utilizing in-situ derived π-π interaction as well as direct evidence of the charge transfer from the photocatalysts to ethylene glycol , which provides guidance for the rational design of highly efficient photocatalysts for plastics photoreforming.
