Highly efficient Hg2+ removal via a competitive strategy using a Co-based metal organic framework ZIF-67

Jiacheng Zhou,Hao Zhang,Tianying Xie,Ye Liu,Qicheng Shen,Jie Yang,Limei Cao,Ji Yang

The stronger coordination ability of mercury ions with organic ligands than the metal ions in metal organic framework (MOFs) provides an accessible way to separate mercury ions from solution using specific MOFs. In this study, a Co-based MOF (ZIF-67, Co(mIM) 2 ) was synthesized. It did not introduce specific functional groups, such as -SH and -NH 2 , into its structure through complicated steps. It separate Hg 2+ from wastewater with a new strategy, which utilized the stronger coordination ability of Hg 2+ with the nitrogen atom on the imidazole ring of the organic ligand than the Co 2+ ions. Hg 2+ replaced Co 2+ nodes from ZIF-67 and formed a more stable precipitate with mIM. The experimental results showed that this new strategy was efficient. ZIF-67 exhibited Hg 2+ adsorption capacity of 1740 mg/g, much higher than the known MOFs sorbents . mIMs is the reaction center and ZIF-67 can improve its utilization. The sample color faded from purple to white due to the loss of cobalt ion. It is a great feature of ZIF-67 that allows users to judge whether the sorbent is deactivated intuitively. ZIF-67 can be sustainable recycled by adding organic ligands to the solution after treatment due to its simple synthesis method at room temperature. It's a high-efficient and sustainable sorbent for Hg 2+ separation from wastewater.

A colorimetric detection of Hg2+ based on gold nanoparticles synthesized oxidized N-methylpyrrolidone as a reducing agent

Shao Xiaodong,Yang Dou,Wang Min,Yue Qiaoli

In this study, a gold nanoparticles colorimetric probe (AuNPs) with direct response to mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) were developed using treated N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and chloroauric acid (HAuCl 4 ) as precursors. NMP showed good reducibility after high temperature hydrolysis and could be used as reducing and stabilizing agent to synthesize AuNPs. The prepared AuNPs have obvious characteristic absorption peaks and appear wine-red. At the same time, it was found that the presence of Hg 2+ can cause the aggregation of AuNPs, increased the absorbance at 700 nm, and changed the color of the solution into blue-gray. This method is capable of sensitive and specific determination of Hg 2+ ranging from 1 to 30 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) at 0.3 μM. The method showed good specificity for the determination of Hg 2+ and has the potential to be applied to Hg 2+ detection in sewage samples in the environment.

One-pot synthesis of nano Zr-based metal-organic frameworks for fluorescence determination of quercetin and Hg2+

Shitao Feng,Furong Tang,Fengshou Wu,Juan Zhang

In this study, a nanoscale Zr-based metal–organic framework (nano-Zr-MOF) was prepared by one-pot method using meso -tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin as organic ligand and Zr 4+ as metal unit. The nanoscale structure endows it with excellent dispersion in water. The nano-Zr-MOF exhibited intense red fluorescence, which could be significantly quenched by the addition of quercetin , probably due to its electron-rich framework. The high selectivity for quercetin detection was verified with analogues and common ions as interfering agents. Moreover, the nano-Zr-MOF could be used as a highly selective and sensitive sensor for the detection of Hg 2+ . The detection limits for quercetin and Hg 2+ were 0.026 μM and 0.039 μM, respectively. This fluorometric method was successfully applied to detect quercetin in red wine and food samples with satisfactory recoveries ranging from 83.7–112.3% and 81.8–115.9%, respectively. The recovery in detection of Hg 2+ in lake water were ranging from 97.1–109.2%.

A multifunctional carbon dots with near-infrared fluorescence for Au3+/Hg2+ and GSH detection and tumor diagnosis

Xiaojing Yang,Yingying Wang,Jingjing Xu,Mei-Xia Zhao

In recent years, carbon dots (CDs) have shown potential applications in fluorescence tracing and imaging due to their excellent optical and chemical properties. In this work, a new type of carbon dots (Cy7-CDs) with near-infrared absorption and emission was synthesized from cyanine dyes and polyethylene glycol by hydrothermal reaction. The prepared Cy7-CDs exhibited low toxicity and excellent biocompatibility, which were applied to detect the noble metal ions Au 3+ /Hg 2+ and glutathione via the ‘on–off-on’ mode. In addition, in vivo fluorescence images demonstrated that Cy7-CDs could efficiently accumulate in the tumor. Therefore, Cy7-CDs could act as a multi-functional probe for biological sensing and tumor diagnosis.

Enzyme-induced multicolor colorimetric and electrochemiluminescence sensor with a smartphone for visual and selective detection of Hg2+

Yidan Ma,Yujie Yu,Xinyi Mu,Chao Yu,Yuan Zhou,Jun Chen,Shuting Zheng,Junlin He

In this study, we developed a novel dual-analytical platform for the visual, sensitive, and reliable analysis of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) in environmental water samples. Importantly, thymine (T)-rich DNA probes were utilized to form T-Hg 2+ -T base pairs in the presence of Hg 2+ to ensure the specificity of the method. We synthesized new luminescent tris(4,4′-dicarboxylicacid-2,2′-bipyridyl) ruthenium (II) dichloride (Ru(dcbpy) 3 2+ )-modified metal-polydopamine frameworks ( [email protected] ), which were then applied to construct an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system for the first time, and it achieved accurate and sensitive quantitative detection of Hg 2+ . To achieve rapid on-site determination, a multicolorimetric system based on a smartphone was established by inducing deposition of silver shells on gold nanorods (Au NRs). Under optimized conditions, the dual-modal assay showed an excellent response for Hg 2+ in the linear range of 2 pmol L −1 to 500 nmol L −1 , with a low detection limit of 0.32 pmol L −1 . Moreover, the proposed method demonstrated satisfactory selectivity , stability, and acceptable reproducibility for the detection of Hg 2+ . The recovery of lake water samples ranged from 98.53% to 111.97% for the ECL method and from 95.04% to 106.11% for the colorimetric method, indicating the potential applicability of the proposed method for monitoring environmental water samples.

Application of graphene quantum dots in the detection of Hg2+ and ClO− and analysis of detection mechanism

Hao Zhang,Zihan Yuan,Mingkun Wang,Lin Zhu,Xiao Cheng,Duxia Cao,Ruifang Guan,Chuanjian Zhou

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are a new type of carbon material that have received widespread attention in recent years. However, due to their complex structure, it is difficult to explore their fluorescence emission mechanism and application mechanism. In this work, GQDs with simple structure were prepared using citric acid as a single precursor. The fluorescence properties and structure of GQDs were characterized, and the results confirmed that their luminescence originated from the n → π* electronic transition produced by the oxygen-containing functional groups in the edge state. Significantly, GQDs can be used as excellent probes to detect Hg 2+ and ClO − in aqueous solution. Hg 2+ combines with the carboxyl groups of the edge states of GQDs to form a complex, and then reduces the fluorescence emission through non-radiative electron transfer . ClO − can oxidize the hydroxyl groups in the edge states of GQDs to make them positively charged, which prevents electron transfer related to the luminescent center and reduces fluorescence emission.

l-Cysteine modified silver nanoparticles-based colorimetric sensing for the sensitive determination of Hg2+ in aqueous solutions

Pengfei Fan,Shunzhen He,Jianlin Cheng,Congcong Hu,Can Liu,Shengyuan Yang,Jinquan Liu

A simple and sensitive colorimetric sensing method was constructed for detection of Hg 2+ in aqueous solutions and based on silver nanoparticles functionalized with l -cysteine ( l -Cys–Ag NPs). In this method, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) induced aggregation of l -Cys–Ag NPs. Simultaneously, the solution colour changed from bright yellow to brown. In the presence of Hg 2+ , Hg 2+ chelated ATP to form a complex and reduce the degree of aggregation of l -Cys–Ag NPs and was accompanied by a colour change from brown to bright yellow. The changing values of absorbance at 390 nm were linearly correlated with concentration of Hg 2+ over the 4.00 × 10 −8 to 1.04 × 10 −6 mol·L −1 range, with a detection limit of 8 nM. This method was used successfully for detection of Hg 2+ in real water samples and performed good selectivity and sensitivity. The recovery range was 91.5–109.1%, indicating that the method has vast application potential for determination of Hg 2+ in the environment.

COFBTLP-1/three-dimensional macroporous carbon electrode for simultaneous electrochemical detection of Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+

Jiajia Han,Jingguo Yu,Yufei Guo,Li Wang,Yonghai Song

The indissolubility or poor dissolubility of covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) limits their wide applications. Here, the COF BTLP-1 which were prepared by the aminaldehyde condensation between 1,4-benzenedithiol-2,5-diamino-hydrochloride and 1,3,5-triformylbenzene was controllably grown on kenaf stem-derived macroporous carbon (3D-KSC). Compared with COF BTLP-1 powder, the COF BTLP-1 grown on 3D-KSC avoided their random orientation effectively. The results showed that the amount of COF BTLP-1 could be effectively controlled by adjusting the concentration of monomers and growing time. Each unit of COF BTLP-1 has 12 adsorption sites (6 sulfur atoms and 6 nitrogen atoms) for heavy metal ions (HMIs) and regular holes to facilitate the transfer of HMIs. A large number of adsorption sites of HMIs could identify and captured HMIs selectively, and accordingly Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ could be detected simultaneously by using the COF BTLP-1 /3D-KSC electrode. The detection limits for Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ are 12.3 nM, 11.8 nM, 18.6 nM and 21.4 nM, respectively. The sensitivities are up to 1337.4 μA/μM cm 2 , 1389.0 μA/μM cm 2 and 886.2 μA/μM cm 2 , 770.0 μA/μM cm 2 , respectively. The COF BTLP-1 /3D-KSC may be also applied in other fields of electroanalytical chemistry.

A simple quinoline-thiophene Schiff base turn-off chemosensor for Hg2+ detection: spectroscopy, sensing properties and applications

Brian Musikavanhu,Selvaraj Muthusamy,Dongwei Zhu,Zhaoli Xue,Qian Yu,Choonzo N. Chiyumba,John Mack,Tebello Nyokong,Shengjun Wang,Long Zhao

A new Schiff base probe ( QT ) consisting of 8-aminoquinoline (Q) and thiophene-2-carboxaldehyde (T) moieties has been synthesized. QT undergoes chelation-enhanced fluorescence quenching when exposed to Hg 2+ due to coordination by the sulfur and nitrogen atoms of QT thus forming a facile “turn-off” sensor. The formation of the chelation complex was confirmed by UV–visible absorption and emission spectral measurements, 1 H NMR titration and density functional theory calculations. These studies revealed that the probe exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg 2+ in the presence of other common metal ions. A low detection limit of 23.4 nM was determined and a Job plot confirmed a 2:1 stoichiometry between QT and Hg 2+ . The potential utility of QT as a sensor for Hg 2+ ions in human HeLa cells was determined by confocal fluorescence microscopy, and its suitability for use in the field with environmental samples was tested with Whatman filter paper strips.

Enhanced peroxidase-like activity of CuO/Pt nanoflowers for colorimetric and ultrasensitive Hg2+ detection in water sample

Qi Lian,Han Liu,Xuefang Zheng,Xiaoming Li,Fengjie Zhang,Jing Gao

A general method for the preparation of Pt doped CuO/Pt nanoflowers (CuO/Pt NFs) for peroxidase mimicking has been demonstrated via hydrothermal method . Pt ions could be reduced to Pt nanoparticles by using the ascorbic acid (AA) as reducing agent and Pt ions were uniformly doped in the CuO nanoflowers by using the bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the stabilizer . The obtained CuO/Pt NFs exhibited a higher peroxidase-like catalytic activity than individual CuO and Pt nanoparticles alone, which could be ascribed to their synergistic effect. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), the CuO/Pt NFs could catalyze the oxidation of chromogen 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to a blue color product. The peroxidase activity of CuO/Pt NFs was selectively inhibited by Hg 2+ due to form the CuO/Pt-Hg trimetallic amalgam . However, the inhibition was not affected by other metal ions . Therefore, a novel colorimetric biosensor was developed for sensitive detection of mercuric ions by using CuO/Pt NFs. This method exhibited a wide response linear range, low limit of quantification values, excellent sensitivity and selectivity for detection of Hg 2+ in various ground water samples, which was verified with CVAAS. With the advantages of rapid response, simple operation, naked-eye observation and low cost, the colorimetric CuO/Pt NFs sensor showed bright prospects for detection of Hg 2+ in various water samples and public drinking water distribution systems .

A functional graphene oxide-ionic liquid composites–gold nanoparticle sensing platform for ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of Hg2+

Na Zhou,Jinhua Li,Hao Chen,Chunyang Liao,Lingxin Chen

A simple and sensitive electrochemical assay strategy of stripping voltammetry for mercury ions (Hg2+) detection is described based on the synergistic effect between ionic liquid functionalized graphene oxide (GO-IL) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AuNPs–GO-IL modified onto glassy carbon electrode (GCE) resulted in highly enhanced electron conductive nanostructured membrane and large electroactive surface area, which was excellently examined by scanning electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry. After accumulating Hg2+, anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) was performed, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was employed for signal recording of Hg2+. Several main experimental parameters were optimized, i.e., deposition potential and time of AuNPs were −0.2 V and 180 s, respectively, and accumulation potential and time of Hg2+ were −0.3 V and 660 s, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, this AuNPs–GO-IL–GCE sensor attained a good linearity in a wide range of 0.1–100 nM (R = 0.9808) between the concentration of the Hg2+ standard and peak current. The limit of detection was estimated to be 0.03 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3σ. A variety of common coexistent ions in water samples were investigated, showing no obvious interferences on the Hg2+ detection. The practical application of the proposed sensor has been carried out and demonstrated as feasible for determination of trace levels of Hg2+ in drinking and environmental water samples.

A highly sensitive sensor based on hollow particles for the detection, adsorption and removal of Hg2+ ions

Xinjian Cheng,Jinping Li,Xianghong Li,Daohong Zhang,Huijuan Zhang,Aiqing Zhang,Hui Huang,Jiansheng Lian

A simple and facile method has been developed for the preparation of highly sensitive hollow spheric chemosensors. In this method, positively charged polystyrene (PS) particles were employed as templates to prepare silica hollow microspheres, and then the micro-sensors were grafted onto the hollow spheres to obtain hollow-chemosensors. A series of different SiO2 hollow spheres could be prepared by tuning the preparation conditions, and were used to carry the sensors. The hollow-chemosensors could not only detect Hg2+ ions, but were also able to separate them with high efficiency. When the hollow-chemosensors were added to Hg2+ ion solutions, the color of solution instantly changed from red to yellow and could be seen by naked eye. The adsorption capacity did not vary significantly over a wide pH range from 3 to 8. The hollow-chemosensors exhibited high selectivity for the detection of Hg2+ ions over other heavy metal ions. In addition, the superiority of using hollow silica spheres as carriers, which was promising for chemosensor detection, adsorption and removal of heavy metal ions in solution, could be clearly seen.
