Aliovalent substitution is an effective route to design new nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals. Using SrCdSiS 4 as a parent compound, two new infrared NLO lanthanide thiosilicates, namely LnLiSiS 4 (Ln = La and Ce), have been successfully obtained through aliovalent substitution. Interestingly, these compounds exhibit [LiSiS 4 ] 3- layers composed of vertex- and edge-shared LiS 4 and SiS 4 tetrahedra that significantly different from the [LnSiS 4 ] 3- layers composed of edge-shared LnS 6 trigonal prisms (or LnS 7 monocapped trigonal prisms) and SiS 4 tetrahedra in other ALnSiS 4 (A = K, Rb, Cs, Ln = lanthanide) compounds with larger sized alkali cations. LnLiSiS 4 (Ln = La and Ce) also achieve balanced properties for good infrared NLO materials: largest SHG response among all known thiosilicates (2.0 and 2.1 × AgGaS 2 @ 2 μm for LaLiSiS 4 and CeLiSiS 4 respectively) with phase matching ability, high laser induced damage threshold (14 and 9 times of AgGaS 2 ), wide bandgap (3.71 and 2.92 eV), wide infrared transmission range (0.35–18 μm) and good thermal stability above 700 °C. This work not only enriches the structure chemistry of lanthanide thiosilicates, but also provides an efficient route to design new high performance IR NLO materials.

In this work, a lanthanum-doped Fe3O4@polydopamine (PDA) core–shell composite was prepared via a hydrothermal method. XPS depth profiling revealed that La is uniformly distributed throughout the Fe3O4 particles, with a constant La/Fe ratio from the surface to 60 nm depth. The material exhibits superparamagnetic properties, enabling rapid magnetic separation within 30 s. Phosphate adsorption reaches equilibrium in 180 min, following pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 > 0.999) and the Sips isotherm, with a maximum capacity of 123.44 mg P per g. XPS analysis revealed shifts in the La 3d spectra consistent with inner-sphere La–P complexation, providing supportive evidence for chemisorption. The adsorbent retained >85% of its capacity after five cycles using 1 M NaCl as the eluent. Negligible La leaching (<0.01 µg L−1) and low aquatic toxicity to Chlorella sp. further support its environmental safety. These results demonstrate that 2.5%La-Fe3O4@PDA provides a robust, magnetically separable, and reusable platform for phosphate removal, offering deeper mechanistic insights into La-doping and PDA synergy in established magnetic core–shell systems.

Lanthanum-doped hydroxyapatite nanowires (La-HAW) were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method and integrated into cryogenically 3D-printed chitosan (CS) porous scaffolds. Owing to their enhanced osteogenic activity and inherent antibacterial properties, these scaffolds represent a promising strategy for bone tissue engineering applications. Comprehensive characterization confirmed that the La-HAW possessed high aspect ratios (>1000), uniform elemental distribution, and successful incorporation of La 3+ into the hydroxyapatite lattice via XRD, XPS, and EDS analyses. In vitro biological evaluations revealed that La-HAW significantly promoted the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts, evidenced by elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and enhanced calcium mineralization, while maintaining excellent biocompatibility. Additionally, La-HAW exhibited strong antibacterial efficacy, with inhibition rates of 90 ± 2% against Escherichia coli and 78 ± 3% against Staphylococcus aureus . When structured into porous chitosan-based scaffolds via cryogenic 3D printing, the resulting CS/La-HAW scaffolds exhibited hierarchical porosity with favorable degradation kinetics, high swelling capacity, and improved cellular adhesion and proliferation. The unique nanowire morphology provided abundant anchoring sites that promoted cell adhesion, spreading, and cytoskeletal extension, synergistically enhancing osteogenic induction. These findings highlight the dual-functional capability of La-HAW based scaffolds, combining enhanced osteogenesis with inherent antibacterial properties, positioning them as a promising platform for bone regeneration.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are characterized by localized atomic-scale lattice distortions that can regulate the adsorption of intermediates during electrocatalysis. However, conventional 3 d HEAs exhibit limited atomic size mismatch, leading to insufficient lattice distortion and weak strain effects, which restrict adsorption tuning and spin-dependent electronic regulation for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a large-radius rare-earth element, lanthanum (La), was incorporated into a multicomponent HEA via a transient high-temperature shock strategy, suppressing phase separation and enabling a metastable single-phase LaFeCoNiMnMo HEA. Structural analysis confirms that La incorporation enhances lattice distortion and induces pronounced strain effects. The catalyst exhibits excellent OER performance, delivering an overpotential of 190 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and stable operation for 95 h. Magnetic measurements reveal that strain drives spin-state evolution, increasing the effective magnetic moment and spin polarization. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that strain induced by lattice distortion breaks the local crystal-field symmetry and modulates d -orbital splitting, leading to optimized adsorption energetics of oxygenated intermediates. This strain-spin-electronic structure coupling lowers the reaction energy barrier and accelerates OER kinetics. This work establishes a strain-driven spin-state regulation mechanism and provides a strategy for designing advanced electrocatalysts via rare-earth-induced electronic and spin modulation.

Bacterial infections pose a severe global health threat with rising mortality, driving the need for alternative therapies. Chemodynamic therapy (CDT), which converts endogenous H2O2 into lethal hydroxyl radicals (•OH) via Fenton reactions, offers a promising solution. Copper peroxide (CuO2) nanodots have recently attracted considerable research interest because of their capacity to generate H2O2. Despite this advantage, their practical use in antibacterial applications is severely limited by their poor stability. In this study, we developed a near-infrared (NIR)-triggered nanoplatform, LA-CP@Fe3O4, by encapsulating CuO2-loaded iron tetraoxide nanoparticles with the phase-change material lauric acid (LA). This system synergistically combines a Fe2+/Fe3+-Cu+/Cu2+ dual-metal catalytic network for enhanced •OH generation with NIR-triggered photothermal activation (a photothermal conversion efficiency of 39.21%), allowing spatiotemporally controlled therapeutic release while stabilizing CuO2 nanodots. In vitro, the platform achieved 99.9% bactericidal efficiency via self-supplied H2O2 and targeted ROS generation. In vivo, it exhibited excellent biocompatibility, accelerated wound healing with an 88.0% reduction in wound area by day 7, and effective NIR-triggered antibacterial activity. These results collectively establish a groundbreaking approach for precision antibacterial therapy with strong clinical translation potential.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramics are widely used in high-power electronic devices due to their excellent electrical insulation, high thermal conductivity, and chemical stability. Doping with rare-earth oxides is a common modification method for AlN ceramics that enhances sintering behavior and thermal conductivity but simultaneously alters defect states, thereby affecting electrical properties. The evolution of these defects and their influence on electrical transport and heat conduction remain unclear. Herein, the defect behavior, electrical insulation, and thermal conduction of Y 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , and Sm 2 O 3 -doped AlN ceramics are systematically compared. A combination of direct current (DC) conductivity, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), dielectric spectroscopy, and thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) analyses confirms a pronounced defect “cleaning effect” induced by rare-earth dopants, with an efficiency ranking of Sm > La > Y. The results reveal that oxygen substituting for nitrogen sites and aluminum vacancies dominate the low- and high-temperature conduction processes, respectively. The influence of rare-earth doping on thermal conductivity is also evaluated. Notably, the samples doped with 4 wt% Y 2 O 3 exhibit the best electrical insulation and the highest thermal conductivity. This work provides important insights into achieving synergistic optimization of the electrical and thermal properties of AlN ceramics through defect engineering.

Methane (CH4) has attracted much attention regarding its use in electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) due to its high mass-energy density; however, the uneven adsorption of intermediates on copper sites by conventional Cu-based catalysts limits the selective production of CH4. The introduction of a second metal can effectively regulate the adsorption energy of intermediates on the Cu site. In this paper, a method of alloying Cu with oxyphilic metals (M) using rapid electrodeposition is presented; the synergistic effect of the bimetal effectively directed the reaction pathway toward CH4. The best Faraday efficiency for methane occurred in the optimized Cu30La20electrode, reaching 66.9% at −1.7 V vs. RHE potential. In situ infrared testing revealed that the *CHO intermediate—a critical species for the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2to CH4—was detected on the Cu30La20catalytic electrode. However, no *CHO intermediate was observed on the Cu20La30electrode. Instead, the characteristic peak of the *OCCHO intermediate associated with C-C coupling emerged on the Cu20La30catalyst. This indicates that the adsorbed oxygen-containing groups on lanthanum sites reacted with carbon-containing groups on copper sites to form C2products, serving as the primary reason for the shift in reduction products from methane to ethylene.

Owing to the intrinsic dielectric-magnetic coupling loss mechanism, perovskite-type lanthanide-transition metal oxide (LaTMO 3 ) is considered as a promising candidate for electromagnetic wave absorbing material, but unmodified LaTMO 3 suffers from limited polarization processes and weak super-exchange magnetic response. Herein, we manipulate the TM-O bond properties by regulating the configuration entropy of transition metal sites to address such issues within single-phase LaTMO 3 . Elaborate structural characterization and P-V-L bond theory demonstrate quantitatively the optimization of electromagnetic wave absorption performance mainly stems from the synergistic improvement in TM-O bond distortion degree and covalency, as well as the formation of diverse super-exchange pathways. Consequently, the high entropy La(Cr 0.2 Mn 0.2 Fe 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 )O 3 exhibits a minimum reflection loss of −50.68 dB, an effective absorption bandwidth covering entire Ku band of 7.6 GHz. The radar cross section of the structure with La(Cr 0.2 Mn 0.2 Fa 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 )O 3 coating are less than −10 dBm 2 within the incident angles -60-60°. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of design and preparation of efficient broadband electromagnetic wave absorbing materials.

Joint doping with trivalent and monovalent ions is a widely adopted strategy to enhance the ionic conductivities of NASICON-type solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) with the general formula Na1+xZr2SixP3–xO12, but the underlying microscopic mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we synthesized a series of Na3+xLaxZr2–xSi2PO12 (NLZSPx, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) ceramics and characterized their electrical properties and structures by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and advanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR). Among all of the samples, the composition with x = 0.2 exhibited the highest ionic conductivity, achieving 1.05 × 10–3 S/cm at 25 °C, which is 3.65 times higher than that of the undoped sample. XRD and SSNMR results prove that La3+ ions did not integrate into the main phase lattice to replace Zr4+ ions. Instead, they formed a heterogeneous phase predominantly composed of Na3La(PO4)2 at the grain boundaries. The content of Na3La(PO4)2 and the composition of the NASICON main phase were accurately determined by SSNMR. This impurity resulted in changes in the Si/P and Na/Zr ratios within the main phase. Some comparison experiments are carried out and prove that these changes were not the principal drivers of the increased conductivity. SEM results further indicated that doping with an appropriate amount of La3+ ions significantly increased the sample densification, thus promoting Na+ ions transport between grain boundaries─this being the key factor driving the observed improvement in ionic conductivity.

Rare-earth element-based materials have attracted extensive interest due to their effectiveness in phosphate removal. However, there are ongoing challenges related to enhancing the phosphate adsorption capacity and regenerating the lanthanum-based adsorbents. This study focused on the preparation of La-Zr bimetallic modified diatomite composites with different molar ratios using a simple coprecipitation method. These composites were employed as efficient adsorbents for the removal of low-concentration phosphate. After conducting a preliminary assessment of the phosphate adsorption capacities of the synthesized La-Zr bimetallic modified diatomite composites, the composite with the La/Zr molar ratio of 1:1 (designated as La 1 Zr 1 -DE) was selected for further characterization and evaluation. The maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of La 1 Zr 1 -DE, determined using the Langmuir isotherm model, was found to be 116.2 mg P/g. The adsorption process of phosphate by La 1 Zr 1 -DE can be primarily attributed to mechanisms such as ligand exchange, inner-sphere complexation, and surface precipitation. Furthermore, La 1 Zr 1 -DE exhibited excellent selectivity for phosphate and demonstrated good regeneration capabilities. This study offers a comprehensive exploration of the adsorption mechanisms, providing a theoretical basis for the development of more effective and sustainable phosphate adsorbents.

BiSb alloys are promising thermoelectric materials for Cryogenic power generation with an optimal operating temperature range of 60 ∼ 300 K. Although the thermoelectric properties of n-type BiSb polycrystalline materials doped with metallic elements are generally enhanced, but the mechanisms underlying these improvements remain incompletely understood. Motivated by the high valence-electron activity and large atomic radius of La, we investigate the thermoelectric properties of La doped polycrystalline Bi 85 Sb 15-x La x (x = 0 ∼ 0.5), supplemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results indicate that La doping slightly increases the band gap and promotes conduction-band convergence, thereby optimizing the electronic structure. Consequently, the Bi 85 Sb 14.6 La 0.4 sample exhibits a high power factor of 3315 μW m −1 K −2 at 213 K. The higher Seebeck coefficient is attributed to an increased density of states effective mass induced by La doping. The enhanced electrical conductivity primarily results from La induced optimization of the electronic structure and grain-growth driven increases in carrier mobility. In addition, the accompanying lattice strain and microscopic morphological defects of La doping effectively suppress the lattice thermal conductivity to ∼0.79 W m −1 K −1 at 273 K. Consequently, this a peak ZT of ∼0.40 at 243 K and an average ZT of ∼0.34 in the range of 153 K ∼ 303 K. Our work offers a promising route to improving the thermoelectric performance of BiSb materials and extending their effective operating range at low temperatures.

Ferroelectric materials with the typical perovskite structure are widely used in capacitors, ultrasonic devices, oil drilling, transducers, and other fields. Lead-lanthanum-zirconium-titanate ceramics co-doped with Sn and Ba , have been widely investigated. However, there is little attention has been focused on the dielectric properties of barium-lanthanum-zirconium-titanate. Thus, in this work, Sn doped Ba 0.955 La 0.03 Zr 0.02 Ti 0.98 O 3 ferroelectric ceramics were prepared via a classical high-temperature solid state reaction. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the surface appearance of ceramics. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns at room temperature, indicate that the ceramics are well crystallized. Impedance properties and dielectric properties reflect the characteristic of typical high temperature dielectric relaxation behavior. The conductive activation energy and the relaxation activation energy are obtained through the calculation of the Arrhenius law. The fitting results show that the dielectric relaxation behavior at high-temperature, was related to the oxygen defect. The electrical modulus verified the partial short-range carrier migration, also contribute to the high-temperature dielectric properties.
