Urchin-like Cu-W18O49 and flower-like Cu-WO3 structures were successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal process followed by calcination. The synthesized products were characterized using XRD, SEM, and TEM. The results revealed that the as-prepared urchin-like and flower-like samples with monoclinic structures, which were approximately 1 μm and 1-2 μm, respectively, possessed microflower architecture assembled by the nanosheet. In addition, the gas sensing properties of monoclinic-structured Cu-WO3 to acetone were measured using a static state gas sensing test system. The sensor based on the flower-like Cu-WO3 nanostructures, which were calcined at 600°C, exhibited high sensitivity toward 10 ppm acetone at an optimum temperature of 110°C, and the maximum sensitivity reached 40, which was approximately four times higher than that of urchin-like WO3 that was annealed at 300°C. The sensitivity was improved by increasing the acetone concentration. The detection limit was as low as 1 ppm. Using linear fit, the sensor was determined to be sufficiently sensitive to detect acetone in a detection range of 1 to 10 ppm even in the presence of interfering gases, which suggests that this type of sensor has excellent selectivity and has the potential for use in acetone gas sensors in the future.

Ultra-thin WO 3 nanorods (NRs) embedded polyaniline (PANI) composite thin films were synthesized by embedding WO 3 NRs into polyaniline using a surface-initiated-polymerization method, followed by spin-coating deposition. The ultra-thin WO 3 NRs with length of 60 nm and diameter of 4 nm were prepared by a solvothermal method . The nanofillers were well-dispersed in the polymer matrix . The nanocomposites were finally deposited onto ITO-coated glass via spin-coating technology. The electrochromic contrast, switching speed, and durability of the composite films were investigated in details. The composite film, being a dual electrochromic material, varied from purple to green, light yellow and finally dark blue. The switching speed (0.9 s) is much faster than the films only composed of WO 3 NRs. The durability of the hybrid film was enhanced compared with neat WO 3 NRs film.

Ag 3 PO 4 nanoparticles were firstly deposited into the three-dimensionally ordered macroporous WO 3 (3DOM-WO 3 ) with different pore sizes. The resulted Ag 3 PO 4 /3DOM-WO 3 composites were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and DR UV–vis. These composite photocatalysts showed extraordinarily excellent efficiencies in the visible light degradation of organic contaminants and water splitting for oxygen evolution, which were mainly due to the synergic effect of Ag 3 PO 4 and 3DOM-WO 3 as well as the periodic macroporous structure of 3DOM-WO 3 . Especially, the catalyst A5W5 with Ag 3 PO 4 :WO 3 mass ratio of 5:5 exhibited the highest catalytic activity, and complete degradation could be achieved within 4 min for phenol and three typical dyes investigated in this work. In addition, the slow photon effect in Ag 3 PO 4 /3DOM-WO 3 was demonstrated, and the pore size of 3DOM-WO 3 was found to have a significant influence on the catalytic performance. The catalyst A5W5(270) showed notably higher photocatalytic activity than A5W5(150) and A5W5 (420), which was mainly attributed to the exact overlap between the stop-band of 3DOM-WO 3 (270) and the electronic absorption band of Ag 3 PO 4 /3DOM-WO 3 composite. Moreover, these composite catalysts were very stable and could be recycled ten times without any loss in photocatalytic activity for RhB degradation. More excitingly, remarkably improved activity and durability were also obtained over Ag 3 PO 4 /3DOM-WO 3 in water splitting for oxygen evolution. According to the XPS and HRTEM characterizations of used catalyst, the enhanced durability was mainly attributed to the effective transfer of photogenerated electrons from Ag 3 PO 4 to 3DOM-WO 3 .

In this report, a novel CdS–WO 3 nano-heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by a multi-step hydrothermal method. Obtained samples exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with pure WO 3 and CdS for the degradation of Ciprofloxacin (CIP). Particularly, 30%-CdS–70%-WO 3 sample shows the highest degradation ratio (88.85%) of CIP among all samples, which is about 3 times over the pure WO 3 . This activity enhancement could be attributed to the fast migration of photo-induced charge-carriers, which can sufficiently inhibit the recombination of electron–hole pairs.

Photocatalytic activities of three composites, namely nickel foam/Ag-TiO2, nickel foam/Ag-ZnO, and nickel foam/Ag-WO3, were evaluated for toluene degradation in a home-made cuboid photoreactor. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry were employed to characterize these photocatalysts. The photodegradation effects of the three photocatalysts peaked under 60% relative humidity, with nickel foam/Ag-TiO2 exhibiting the highest rate of photocatalytic toluene degradation. Controlling humidity could enhance the photocatalytic toluene degradation activities of the three composites, which are significantly affected by a wider band gap. In this study, a dynamic model was proposed and analyzed according to the time-dependent photodegradation of toluene.

Ni–WO 3 /SBA-15 catalysts were prepared by an impregnation way and applied to the hydrogenolysis of cellulose in aqueous solution. The effect of nickel and WO 3 loading, catalysts reduction temperature and time on cellulose conversion were investigated. Up to 70.7% ethylene glycol yield was obtained over 3%Ni–15%WO 3 /SBA-15 catalysts. Several physicochemical methods such as XRD, Raman spectroscopy, NH 3 -TPD, H 2 -TPR and XPS were used to determine the character of catalysts. Based on these studies, it was found that there was a strong electronic interaction between NiO and WO 3 , which not only promoted the reduction of WO 3 , but restrained the reduction of NiO. Together with the experimental results, it can be concluded that the WO 3− X , which may be the active species for the selective cleavage of C C bond, was formed after catalysts pretreatment process. Additionally, a possible catalytic mechanism was proposed.

Ag-WO 3 core-shell nanospheres (CSNSs) are fabricated for gas sensor applications. It is found that the sensor based on Ag-WO 3 CSNSs dramatically improve the sensor performance towards alcohol vapor, with significantly lower optimum working temperature (260 °C) and superior detection limit (0.20 ppm) comparing to pure WO 3 hollow nanospheres (HNSs). The Ag-WO 3 sensor displays an ultrahigh sensitivity under visible light illumination. When illuminated under a 150 W xenon arc light source, the response is increased from 62 to 160, the optimum working temperature is reduced from 260 to 190 °C, and the detection limit is improved from 0.20 to 0.032 ppm. This work may offer an attractive strategy to improve sensitivity of light-enhanced plasmonic metal-oxide based gas sensors.

Supported Ru nanoparticles with high utilization are promising for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but the effect of the crystal phase engineering of supports on their performance remains unclear. Here, the impact of the crystal phase of the support on the catalytic activity of Ru was probed by anchoring Ru nanoparticles onto precisely synthesized hexagonal (WO 3 -H), orthorhombic (WO 3 -O), and monoclinic (WO 3 -M) supports followed by thorough evaluation for HER. Among them, WO 3 -H demonstrated superior performance by providing enhanced Ru anchoring and uniform dispersion, maximizing active site availability. A critical finding is the small work function difference (Δ W F ) between Ru and WO 3 -H, which minimizes interfacial charge accumulation and facilitates efficient hydrogen spillover, thereby accelerating HER kinetics. In contrast, WO 3 -O and WO 3 -M exhibited larger Δ W F and less effective Ru dispersion, resulting in a larger hydrogen spillover barrier and suboptimal hydrogen adsorption/desorption dynamics. As a result, Ru/WO 3 -H exhibited the best performance, achieving an overpotential of 43.8 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 49.1 mV dec −1 . This work highlights the critical role of the crystal phase in optimizing the intrinsic catalytic activity of catalysts, offering new insights for designing efficient HER catalysts.

The dual-band electrochromic smart windows (DESW) can selectively modulate visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) transmittance, which is expected to effectively reduce building energy consumption. However, the complex preparation of dual-band electrochromic materials has restricted the further development of DESW. In this work, amorphous and crystalline Ti-doped WO3·2H2O (TiWH) were synthesized by a simple precipitation method, which does not require strict control of the oxygen content and temperature. Ti doping reduced the crystallinity of WO3·2H2O and increased the specific surface area. 3% TiWH films exhibited excellent dual-band electrochromism with high transmittance modulation (633 nm: 83.8%, 1050 nm: 72.5%), fast response time (bleached/colored time: 14.9/15.3 s at 633 nm, 16.0/3.5 s at 1050 nm), good coloration efficiency (633 nm: 22.8 cm2 C–1, 1050 nm: 90.8 cm2 C–1), and high capacitance of 47.1 mF cm–2 at 0.1 mA cm–2. The electrochromic device can still maintain good dual-band electrochromism (bright, cool, and dark modes). The excellent dual-band electrochromism and energy storage make TiWH have a good application prospect in green buildings.

The design and synthesis of vanadium-based denitration catalysts with low-temperature activity pose significant challenges in the field of toxic gas catalysis. In this study, we have developed a novel approach to fabricate highly efficient V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 monolithic mesh catalysts for NO x reduction at low temperatures. First, TiO 2 nanosheets with strong adhesion and large surface area were grown on Ti mesh using plasma electrolytic oxidation technology and hydrothermal method. Then, super-small traces of WO 3 and V 2 O 5 active nano-species were subsequently deposited on TiO 2 nanosheets using the deposition–precipitation method. Compared to traditional ceramic-based V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 catalysts, our V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 monolithic mesh catalyst exhibits superior mechanical performance, excellent thermal conductivity, lower pressure drop, higher utilization of active components, and stronger synergistic effects. Significantly, the V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 monolithic mesh catalysts exhibited excellent low-temperature catalytic activity with 98% of NO x conversion at 220 ℃, and remarkable long-term SO 2 tolerance and water resistance in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x with NH 3 . The SCR reaction of tiny V 2 O 5 and WO 3 active species supported on TiO 2 nanosheets directly demonstrated to follow the Eley–Rideal mechanism by in situ infrared spectra.

Acetone plays a critical role in environmental protection and human healthcare, thus necessitating sensitive and selective detection. In this regard, a resistive microelectromechanical system (MEMS) acetone sensor featuring a sensing layer of
$\alpha $
-Fe2O3 nanoparticles modified tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanoplates is utilized in this work. After optimizing the composition proportion and operating temperature, the Fe/W:0.2 sensor delivered a wide detection range (0.05–80 ppm), and an approximately sevenfold higher response of 40.6 toward 10 ppm acetone at
$217~^{\circ }$
C than pure WO3 analog. In addition, a limit of detection (LoD) of 50 ppb was achieved, which ranks among the lowest cases thus far. Together with excellent repeatability, selectivity, and long-term stability, the sensor also showed a humidity-enhanced response. This work offers an alternative strategy to realize trace acetone detection within high-humidity conditions and showcases a huge application potential in exhaled breath-involving diabetes monitoring in the future.

Photoanodes with sufficient visible light absorption, efficient photogenerated carrier separation and fast transport are still the main challenges for realizing high-efficiency photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, we prepared the WO 3 /FeOOH heterojunction in situ grown on the FTO glass substrates by a facile seed-mediated two-step hydrothermal method . Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the prepared WO 3 /FeOOH heterojunction exhibits the enhanced photocurrent density of 2.63 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is much higher than that of the bare WO 3 film (1.62 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE). The excellent PEC performance of the sample can be attributed to the improved oxygen evolution kinetics and the extended visible light absorption range due to FeOOH, and the facilitation of carrier separation together with the suppressed recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs due to the formation of type-II WO 3 /FeOOH heterojunction. This work provides a promising approach for developing a highly efficient and cost-effective photoanode for application in solar-driven PEC water splitting.
