Optical transformation of a CdTe quantum dot-based paper sensor for a visual fluorescence immunoassay induced by dissolved silver ions

Zhenzhen Lin,Shuzhen Lv,Kangyao Zhang,Dianping Tang

This work designs a simple low-cost visual fluorescence immunoassay for disease-related biomarkers (carcinoembryonic antigen, CEA, used as a model protein) in biological fluids, based on the structural and optical transformation of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) immobilized on paper induced by dissolved silver ions (Ag+) from silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via a cation-exchange reaction. A sandwich-type immunoreaction was initially carried out in a removable polystyrene high-binding microplate coated with monoclonal anti-CEA capture antibody by using AgNP-labeled polyclonal anti-CEA antibody as the detection antibody. Thereafter, the carried AgNPs accompanying the sandwiched immunocomplexes were dissolved by acid to release numerous silver ions, which induced the ion-exchange reaction with the immobilized CdTe QDs on the paper (attached onto the microplate lid) for the Cd-to-Ag transformation, thus resulting in the quenching of the visual fluorescence from the CdTe QDs owing to Ag2Te formation. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity decreased with the increasing CEA concentration from 0.02 to 50 ng mL−1 with a detection limit of 5.6 pg mL−1. Further, a visual assay based on a CdTe QD-based paper sensor was developed for CEA detection, and 5.0 pg mL−1 CEA could be discriminated with the naked eye. In addition, our strategy displayed high specificity, good reproducibility and acceptable accuracy for analyzing human serum specimens with consistent results obtained using the commercialized enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method.

A novel method for fabricating hybrid biobased nanocomposites film with stable fluorescence containing CdTe quantum dots and montmorillonite-chitosan nanosheets

Yawen Guo,Xuesong Ge,Jing Guan,Lin Wu,Fuhua Zhao,Hui Li,Xindong Mu,Yijun Jiang,Aibing Chen

A method was presented for fabricating the fluorescent nanocomposites containing CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and montmorillonite (MMT)-chitosan (CS). MMT-CS/CdTe QDs nanocomposites were prepared via a simple, versatile and robust approach combination of covalent and electrostatic assembly methods (Scheme 1). The negatively charged MMT was initially modified with positively charged CS through electrostatic assembly, followed by incorporation of CdTe-QDs into the MMT-CS nanosheets by covalent connections between the amino groups of CS and the carboxylic acid groups of thioglycollic acid (TGA). The X-ray diffraction (XRD), High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the FTIR were used to prove the QDs have intercalated into the MMT-CS matrix. The fluorescence emission spectra showed that the MMT-CS/CdTe QDs nanocomposites had the best fluorescence intensity compared with the bare CdTe QDs and CS-QDs.

Silver Nanolabels-Assisted Ion-Exchange Reaction with CdTe Quantum Dots Mediated Exciton Trapping for Signal-On Photoelectrochemical Immunoassay of Mycotoxins

Youxiu Lin,Qian Zhou,Dianping Tang,Reinhard Niessner,Huanghao Yang,Dietmar Knopp

Mycotoxins, highly toxic secondary metabolites produced by many invading species of filamentous fungi, contaminate different agricultural commodities under favorable temperature and humidity conditions. Herein, we successfully devised a novel signal-on photoelectrochemical immunosensing platform for the quantitative monitoring of mycotoxins (aflatoxin B1, AFB1, used as a model) in foodstuffs on the basis of silver nanolabels-assisted ion-exchange reaction with CdTe quantum dots (QDs) mediated hole-trapping. Initially, a competitive-type immunoreaction was carried out on a high-binding microplate by using silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-labeled AFB1–bovine serum albumin (AFB1–BSA) conjugates as the tags. Then, the carried AgNPs with AFB1–BSA were dissolved by acid to release numerous silver ions, which could induce ion-exchange reaction with the CdTe QDs immobilized on the electrode, thus resulting in formation of surface exciton trapping. Relative to pure CdTe QDs, the formed exciton trapping decreased the photocurrent of the modified electrode. In contrast, the detectable photocurrent increased with the increase of target AFB1 in a dynamic working range from 10 pg mL–1 to 15 ng mL–1 at a low limit of detection (LOD) of 3.0 pg mL–1 under optimal conditions. In addition, the as-prepared photoelectrochemical immunosensing platform also displayed high specificity, good reproducibility, and acceptable method accuracy for detecting naturally contaminated/spiked blank peanut samples with consistent results obtained from the referenced enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method.

Sulfurated [NiFe]-based layered double hydroxides nanoparticles as efficient co-catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution using CdTe/CdS quantum dots

Dongting Yue,Xufang Qian,Miao Kan,Meng Ren,Yao Zhu,Lele Jiang,Yixin Zhao

Binary transition metals layered double hydroxides (LDH) such as [NiFe] have been developed as the promising low cost and high performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. However their applications as co-catalysts in photocatalysis like CdTe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) for hydrogen evolution are limited by their ineffective contact with QDs nanoparticles. We report on the synthesis of the sulfurated [NiFe]-LDH (FeNiS) nanoparticles via the sulfurizing treatment of [NiFe]-based LDH. The sulfurizing treatment can successfully break the 2D [NiFe]-LDH into FeNiS nanoparticles by replacing the OH group via the S group. FeNiS nanoparticles provide more bonding sites for CdTe/CdS QDs due to the sulfur species formed on the FeNiS nanoparticles. The junction between sulfur species and Cd 2+ of CdTe/CdS QDs could facilitate electrons transfer between CdTe/CdS QDs and FeNiS nanoparticles and then significantly enhance their photocatalytic hydrogen production. The photocatalytic activity of FeNiS-CdTe/CdS is much better than [NiFe]-CdTe/CdS QDs and Pt-CdTe/CdS QDs. In all, this novel FeNiS nanoparticles would be a promising low cost co-catalyst for energy and environmental photocatalysis.

Flow-based determination of methionine in pharmaceutical formulations exploiting TGA-capped CdTe quantum dots for enhancing the luminol-KIO4 chemiluminescence

Min Zhou,Ailian Wang,Cong Li,Xiaowei Luo,Yongjun Ma

A novel flow-injection chemiluminescence method (FI-CL) was established for the determination of methionine in this paper, based on its strong enhancement on CL intensity of the luminol-KIO 4 system catalyzed by thioglycolic acid-capped CdTe quantum dots in alkaline media. Under the optimized conditions, the relative CL intensity was in proportion to methionine concentration in the range from 1.0×10 − 8 to 1.0×10 −5   g   mL −1 with a detection limit of 6.6×10 −9   g   mL −1 (3σ). The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the CL intensity for 1.0×10 −6   g   mL −1 standard methionine solution was 0.97% (n=11). The proposed method was successfully applied to determine methionine in commercial pharmaceutical formulations with recoveries between 98.0% and 101.9%. The possible CL mechanism was discussed as well.

Sensitive determination of enoxacin in pharmaceutical formulations by its quench effect on the fluorescence of glutathione-capped CdTe quantum dots

Qiong Yang,Xuanping Tan,Jidong Yang

A sensitive and simple method for the determination of enoxacin (ENX) was developed based on the fluorescence quenching effect of ENX for glutathione (GSH)-capped CdTe quantum dots (QDs). Under optimum conditions, a good linear relationship was obtained from 4.333 × 10 −9 mol⋅L −1 to 1.4 × 10 −5 mol⋅L −1 with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.9987, and the detection limit (3σ/K) was 1.313 × 10 −9 mol⋅L −1 . The corresponding mechanism has been proposed on the basis of electron transfer supported by ultraviolet–visible (UV) light absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, and the measurement of fluorescence lifetime. The method has been applied to the determination of ENX in pharmaceutical formulations (enoxacin gluconate injections and commercial tablets) with satisfactory results. The proposed method manifested several advantages such as high sensitivity, short analysis time, low cost and ease of operation. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Ultrasensitive detection and application of estradiol based on nucleic acid aptamer and circulating amplification technology

Xufeng Hao,Yue Guan,Fei Liu,Yajun Zhang,Yijing Zhai,Lingmei Niu

It remains a vital task to establish ultrasensitive sensing interfaces for detection of estrogen to meet the demands of modern analysis, because steroidal estrogens have serious harm and interference effects on the endocrine function of humans and animals. Herein, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) platform for the highly sensitive determination of trace 17β-estradiol was developed based on CdTe-GO photosensitivity enhancement and cyclic technology signal amplification. Specifically, CdTe-GO was used as a photosensitive material to modify the screen-printed electrode (SPE) to obtain a stronger photocurrent, and then the cyclic amplification technology was introduced to significantly improve the photocurrent response. Under the optimal conditions, the as-prepared PEC aptasensor exhibited superb analytical performances for detection of E2 in the range from0.04 to 10 pM with a detection limit of 0.01 pM. The aptasensor showed significant selectivity and excellent reproducibility, which was attributed to the dual remarkable specific selection of aptamer and antibody for E2 and the high stability of the SPE. In addition, aptasensor had been successfully applied to determine E2 in royal jelly, milk powder and urine samples. Therefore, this article provides a new perspective for rapid, ultra-sensitive, and highly specific detection of E2.

Cu2Sb-Based CdTe Solar Cells: The Effects of Cu and Sb Dopants on Photoelectronic Performance and Long-Term Stability of Devices

Kanghui Zheng,Qianqian Song,Yueling Lai,Gang Wang,Lin Zheng,Ganhua Fu,Jingong Pan,Shou Peng,Yufeng Zhou,Ruilin Wang

Copper doping represents the most established technological process in the current manufacturing of CdTe solar cells and modules. However, its self-compensation effect and rapid diffusion at junction locations impose limitations on both the device efficiency and long-term stability. In this study, a Cu2Sb thin film with controllable composition and thickness was synthesized on the CdTe surface via a substitution reaction, serving as the p-type doping source for the device. Comparative investigations were conducted to evaluate the effects of pure Cu, pure Sb, and Cu–Sb alloyed dopants on the photoelectronic performance of CdTe-based thin-film solar cells. Although pure Sb dopants exhibit inferior performance and cannot replace Cu as the primary dopant, they serve effectively as auxiliary dopants. Incorporating Sb into the Cu doping process increases the concentration threshold for device doping, thereby enhancing the device’s overall doping concentration. The optimized device achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) exceeding 18%. Furthermore, appropriate Sb incorporation significantly improved device stability, maintaining 90% of the initial PCE after 50 days of normal operation. These results demonstrate that codoping with Cu and Sb via Cu2Sb provides a promising route for fabricating high-efficiency and highly stable CdTe thin-film solar cells and modules.

A CdTe/CdS quantum dots amplified graphene quantum dots anodic electrochemiluminescence platform and the application for ascorbic acid detection in fruits

Hongjun Chen,Wang Li,Peng Zhao,Zhou Nie,Shouzhuo Yao

Herein, a CdTe/CdS QDs (with a CdTe core and a CdS shell) amplified electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of nitrogen functional graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) platform is reported. The utilization of CdTe/CdS QDs could facilitate the production of NGQDs radical, and then, a high yield of NGQDs* was formed due to the interaction of NGQDs radical with O 2 − , leading to an ∼21-fold ECL enhancement. This ECL enhancing system does not require the addition of coreactant and modification of electrode which is carried out in homogeneous solution. Benefiting from the remarkable ECL enhancement effect, a feasible and sensitive ECL sensor was constructed for ascorbic acid (AA) quantification. The proposed method features a detection limit of 70   nM with a linear calibration range from 100   nM to 100   μM, and exhibits good stability, practicability, and acceptable fabrication reproducibility, showing promising application in real-sample.

Composite molecularly imprinted ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on carbon dots and CdTe quantum dots for visual detection of ciprofloxacin in seawater

Na Wang,Abdul Majid,Kunpeng Wang,Liju Tan,Huiru Li,Jiangtao Wang

As a commonly used antibiotic, the residues of ciprofloxacin (CIP) enter the environment owing to its abuse and it is of great significance for environmental protection and human health to develop a fast and selective sensor for the determination of trace CIP. In this work, composite imprinted ratiometric fluorescent nanoparticles of CdTe/CQDs@SiO 2 @MIPs that can efficiently and rapidly detect ciprofloxacin (CIP) in seawater samples were synthesized by sol-gel method. The blue fluorescence of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) at 436 nm was the reference, and the orange yellow fluorescence of CdTe QDs at 547 nm was sensitive to CIP. The sensor showed satisfying linear relationship till to 20 μmol L −1  (R 2  = 0.9963) with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.09 μmol L −1 and recoveries of 96.2–103.1% in seawater. It was successfully applied to the detection of CIP in seawater after pretreatment by solid phase microextraction. The sensor exhibited a “green-blue” color change window visible to the naked eye under 365 nm UV light. This method provides a fluorescence imprinting strategy for the visualization and in situ detection of CIP in environmental water.

Combining CdTe/CdS/ZnS Quantum Dot Fluorescence Temperature Measurements with Double-Helix Point Spread Function Axial Location for Intracellular 3D Thermograms

Xinbing Jiang,Shaochong Zhu,Huan Yang,Yuxi Fei,Jiuhong Wang,Shujiang Ding

Intracellular three-dimensional (3D) thermal mapping is a valuable technical tool for answering fundamental scientific questions about cellular thermal behavior and subcellular diagnostic therapy. The best method for achieving intracellular 3D thermal imaging is to collect intracellular temperature response while also obtaining a 3D position for the corresponding location. However, temperature measurement in cell space has not been accurately characterized due to the difficulty in accurately locating the 3D position in microregions. In this article, we developed a QD-based intracellular 3D thermal imaging system by combining QD fluorescence thermometry with double-helical point spread function (DH-PSF)-based axial localization. Liposome transfection was used to achieve the cellular uptake of CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs in HOS cells. Five QDs’ temperatures with spatial distribution in living cells were realized in the axial range of 1.35 μm by collecting the thermosensitive fluorescence emission of discrete QDs and the axial imaging localization information, and their 3D thermal image distribution was mapped. Measurements and analysis show that the combination of QD fluorescence thermometry and axial localization of DH-PSF enables the acquisition of thermal image information in intracellular 3D microregions. Using this system, temperature variations at 3D locations in living cells exposed to ionomycin Ca2+ stress were also monitored. The method described in this article can be applied broadly to the study of intracellular space thermal response and thermal regulation.

An ultra-sensitive dopamine photoelectrochemical sensing platform based on two-dimensional Zn carbon nanosheets, hollow Cu2O and CdTe QDs composite films

Chenxi Wang,Jia Chen,Li Zhang,Yaqi Yang,Minghui Huang,Chao Chen,Chunyan Li,Yixi Xie,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei

In this work, two-dimensional Zn carbon nanosheets (CNs) are obtained after heat treatment of in situ synthesized ZIF-8/NaCl nanocomposites , which are ultrasonically mixed with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Subsequently, the nanocomposites Zn CNs-MWCNTs with large specific surface area and excellent catalytic properties are obtained. Meanwhile, the photoelectric material H–Cu 2 O/CdTe QDs are drop-coated on Zn CNs-MWCNTs/GCE and the modified electrode Zn CNs-MWCNTs/H–Cu 2 O/CdTe QDs/GCE is obtained. Eventually, a novel dopamine photoelectrochemical sensor based on Zn CNs-MWCNTs/H–Cu 2 O/CdTe QDs/GCE is constructed. Among them, the photocurrent intensity of H–Cu 2 O/CdTe QDs is much higher than that of pure H–Cu 2 O and pure CdTe QDs. This is due to the effective combination of CdTe QDs and H–Cu 2 O to form a p-p heterojunction , which can effectively suppress the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Subsequently, the working mechanism of the photoelectrochemical sensor is investigated in depth by the Kubelka-Munk model. At the same time, the photoelectrochemical sensor has reliable selectivity, stability, reproducibility and limit of detection (LOD = 0.3 nM), and also provides a new idea for the detection of dopamine.
