Tuning the hydrogenation activity of Pd is an effective method to achieve selective hydrogenation of acetylene. The previous study shows that Pd has a strong interaction with In 2 O 3 , causing a significant change in the electronic structure of the palladium catalyst. Herein, Pd/In 2 O 3 @SiO 2 was prepared by a deposition-precipitation method for selective hydrogenation of acetylene. After the reduction by flowing hydrogen, Pd-In intermetallic compounds can be formed. The concentration of the formed intermetallic compounds is closely associated with the reduction temperature. The Pd-In intermetallic compounds suppress the hydrogen activation ability of Pd and significantly weaken the adsorption of ethylene. Especially, a weak adsorption of di-σ-bonded ethylene is observed, which facilitates the desorption of ethylene and promotes the ethylene selectivity in the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene. The experimental study confirms that there exists an optimum reduction temperature (250 °C) for the formation of the Pd-In intermetallic compounds, with which ∼ 80 % ethylene selectivity and 100 % acetylene conversion have been achieved at 140 °C.

Achieving selective detection of ppb-level CO is important for air quality testing at industrial sites to ensure personal safety. Noble metal doping enhances charge transfer, which in turn reduces the detection limit of metal oxide gas sensors. In this work, metal–organic framework-derived Au-doped In2O3 nanotubes with high electrical conductivity are synthesized by pyrolysis of the Au-doped metal–organic framework (In-MIL-68) as a template. Gas-sensing experiments reveal that the detection limit of 0.2% Au-doped In2O3 nanotubes (0.2% Au, mass fraction) is as low as 750 ppb. Meanwhile, the sensing material shows a response value of 18.2 to 50 ppm of CO at 240 °C, which is about 2.8 times higher than that of pure In2O3. Meanwhile, the response and recovery times are short (37 s/86 s). The gas-sensing mechanism of CO is uncovered by in situ DRIFTS through the reaction intermediates. In addition, first-principles calculations suggest that Au doping of In2O3 significantly enhances its adsorption energy for CO and improves the electron transfer properties. This study reveals a novel synthesis pathway for Au-doped In2O3 nanotubular structures and their potential application in low concentration CO detection.

The demand for gas sensors is experiencing rapid growth, driven by the increasing need for air quality detection in the face of environmental pollution and industrial emissions. However, the widely used metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors suffer from drawbacks such as low ability to predict gas concentration and poor selectivity . In this work, a sensor array was fabricated consisting of 10 various gas sensors and combined with an advanced deep learning algorithm to achieve precise predictions of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) at low concentrations. First, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and In 2 O 3 nanoparticles were composited with different mass ratios, resulting in the formation of distinct g-C 3 N 4 /In 2 O 3 composites as sensing materials. Afterward, SEM, TEM , and XRD were employed to characterize the morphology, structure, and elemental composition of the samples. Furthermore, sensing properties including response, selectivity , and repeatability, are studied for 10 gas sensors based on g-C 3 N 4 /In 2 O 3 composites. Finally, the convolutional neural network-efficient channel attention-gate recursive unit (CNN-AGRU) model was proposed to analyze the patterns of the signals collected from the sensor array when exposed to various NO 2 concentrations from 1 to 9 ppm. The results demonstrated the integration of high-selectivity sensing materials to NO 2 and an advanced deep learning algorithm CNN-AGRU enables to realize a high concentration prediction accuracy of about 97.04% and a low prediction error of 0.20527 ppm for NO 2 gas.

Achieving efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction using H 2 O as a hydrogen source requires the synergistic optimization of both charge and proton transfer between CO 2 reduction and H 2 O oxidation half-reactions. However, conventional studies mostly focused on enhancing these half-reactions independently, overlooking the intrinsic interdependence between them. Herein, this work develops a photothermal catalyst (denoted as Pd 1+c /3DOM-In 2 O 3 ) through engineering synergistic Pd single atoms (Pd 1 ) and Pd clusters (Pd c ) in three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) In 2 O 3 framework. The mechanistic study reveals that the coexistence of Pd single atoms and clusters not only offers synergistic active sites to promote the reaction of CO 2 and H 2 O, but also substantially improves the separation and transfer efficiencies of photogenerated electrons and holes. The Pd clusters facilitate H 2 O dissociation to ensure an adequate supply of active hydrogen species as well as synergistically enhance the adsorption and activation of CO 2 at Pd single-atom sites. Furthermore, the enhanced photoabsorption in visible and near-infrared regions, attributed to the localized surface plasmon resonance of Pd clusters, leads to a significant increase in catalyst temperature under simulated solar irradiation. The integration of photocatalysis with the photothermal effect affords an intensified driving force for the selective conversion of CO 2 and H 2 O into CO, thereby accelerating the reaction kinetics of the overall photocatalytic CO 2 reduction process. As a result, the Pd 1+c /3DOM-In 2 O 3 catalyst exhibits excellent performance for solar-driven CO 2 reduction with H 2 O vapor, achieving a remarkable CO production rate of 192.52 μmol g –1 h –1 , which is 19.8-fold and 12.2-fold higher than those of pure 3DOM-In 2 O 3 and Pd 1 /3DOM-In 2 O 3 , respectively. This study provides valuable insights into the synergistic effect of metal single atoms and clusters toward both efficient photocatalysis and photothermal effect for solar-driven CO 2 reduction.

In this study, the In 2 O 3 -carbonization wood (In 2 O 3 -CW) composites were prepared using waste poplar wood through a comprehensive process involving “delignification-bleaching-impregnation-carbonization”. The morphology, crystal structure, elemental chemical state and photocatalytic activity of In 2 O 3 -CW were investigated by SEM, HRTEM , BET, XRD , XPS , UV–vis DRS, PL , EIS , ESR , TOC and LC-MS. Malachite green (MG) served as a model organic pollutant to assess the adsorption and visible-light photocatalytic performance of In 2 O 3 -CW in dye degradation. The results indicated a significant enhancement in the adsorption-photocatalytic performance of In 2 O 3 nanoparticles loaded with biomass, leading to a significant increase in the MG degradation rate from 24 % to 76 %. Specifically, when the concentration of MG was 100 mg·L −1 , 20 mg of 0.5In 2 O 3 -CW removed more than 96 % of MG to 481 mg·g −1 . The negatively charged surface of In 2 O 3 -CW was observed to be effective in adsorbing MG molecules. Moreover, In 2 O 3 -CW exhibited a narrow band gap, high photocatalytic activity, and excellent light harvesting ability, facilitating enhanced photogenerated electron-hole separation and the generation of potent active substances ( OH and O 2 − ). Given this knowledge, a detailed deduction of the dye discoloration mechanism was presented, offering a novel approach for the effective treatment of dye wastewater pollution and the realization of high-value applications for waste biomass resources from agriculture and forestry.

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR) to obtain formate is a promising method to consume CO 2 and alleviate the energy crisis. Indium-based electrocatalysts have demonstrated considerable potential to produce formate. However, their unsatisfactory long-term stability and selectivity restrict their widespread application. In this study, a heterostructure of GaN- and In 2 O 3 -encapsulated porous carbon nanofibers was constructed via electrospinning and the phase transition of eutectic gallium-indium during calcination . The GaN and In 2 O 3 nanoparticle-encapsulated porous carbon nanofibers, when used as electrocatalysts for eCO 2 RR, displayed high formate selectivity with a faradaic efficiency of 87% and maximum partial current density of 29.7 mA cm −2 in a 0.5 mol L −1 KHCO 3 aqueous solution. The existence of the interface can cause a positive shift in the In 3 d binding energy, leading to electronic redistribution. Moreover, the GaN component induced a higher proportion of O-vacancy sites in the In 2 O 3 phase, resulting in improved selectivity for CO 2 -to-formate. In-situ Raman experiments and density functional theory calculations revealed that the interface between GaN and In 2 O 3 could lower the adsorption energy of the key intermediates for formate production, thus providing superior eCO 2 RR performance. In addition, the framework of the porous carbon nanofibers exhibited a large electrochemically active surface area, which enabled the full exposure of the active sites. This study highlights the cooperation between GaN and In 2 O 3 components and provides new insights into the rational design of catalysts with high CO 2 -to-formate conversion efficiencies.

The reasonable design of semiconductor metal oxides modified by elemental doping and surface functionalization has been proven to be an effective method to improve the gas sensing abilities of chemiresistor-type sensors. In this work, Ni-doped In2O3 nanorods were fabricated via simple oil bath and annealing processes. To further enhance their gas sensing performances, Ag functionalization was carried out by a subsequent chemical reduction process. The experimental results reveal that these composites exhibit excellent formaldehyde sensing performance compared with pure In2O3 nanorods. In particular, 6%-Ag/Ni5.0In presents significantly enhanced gas sensing performance toward 100 ppm formaldehyde gas at a low working temperature (160 °C) with high sensitivity (123.97), fast response speed (1.45 s/58.2 s), and good selectivity and stability. Our research reveals that the improvement in sensing performance toward formaldehyde can be attributed to the large specific surface area, high relative contents of OV and OC components, electronic sensitization and the catalytic effect of Ag. The results provide an effective strategy to achieve excellent gas sensing performance for formaldehyde gas sensors.

Pure and 1–4 mol% cobalt doped indium oxide (Co-doped In2O3) sponge-like microstructures with high specific surface area were fabricated by a simple and environmentally friendly hydrothermal method. The specific surface area and porosity of Co-doped sponge-like In2O3 microstructures can be regulated through the modulation of Co/In molar ratios. The as-prepared sensors based on Co-doped In2O3 exhibit favorable gas sensing properties toward acetone gas; their porous structure can create more adsorption sites for the adsorption of oxygen molecules and the diffusion of the target gas, leading to significant improvement in sensing performance. In particular, 3 mol% Co-doped In2O3 presents the greatest response to acetone vapor at 240 °C, which is about 3.25 times higher than that of pure In2O3. The sensor also exhibits rapid response-recovery time (1.143 s/37.5 s), low detection limit (2.76 at 5 ppm), good reproducibility and high selectivity, making it a promising material for acetone detection.

Development research as a NO 2 gas sensor has attracted extensive attention recently. However, how to improve the electrical conductivity of materials, adjust the band structure of materials through photoexcitation and improve the carrier lifetime is still a challenge. In this work, an S-doped In 2 O 3 structure (S x /In 2 O 3−x ) was synthesized by enforcing the simple hydrothermal method . Doping directly controls the distribution of structural defects and oxygen vacancies in the material structure, and the response to NO 2 increases by orders of magnitude under photoexcitation. Various structural characterization techniques examined the properties of the S x /In 2 O 3−x -based material. More specifically, its electro-optical properties and the impact of S doping on its energy band structure were thoroughly analyzed to investigate the origins of the enhanced responsivity .

As a poisonous and harmful gas, NO 2 , is not only harmful to the environment, but also detrimental to human health. In this work, ionic liquids (1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [C 16 Mim] Cl) were selected as dopants to prepare flower-like Cl uniform doped In 2 O 3 nanomaterials. The material exhibits excellent sensing performance to NO 2 under UV light because of Cl uniform doped. Compared with the experiment in dark conditions, the response value of the sensor to 5 ppm NO 2 under UV light is approximately two times higher (S = 425.9) and presents a faster recovery rate (69 s). Chlorine doping shifts the valence band of the material upwards, facilitating the photogenerated electron leap under UV illumination. Moreover, the in-situ DRIFT under UV light were employed to verify the interaction between the materials and NO 2 gas in N 2 , air and O 2 atmospheres respectively. It was found that the presence of oxygen in the environment affects the adsorption of NO 2 on the surface of the Cl doped In 2 O 3 material. This work is of great significance to the sensing mechanism investigation of photo-activated NO 2 gas sensors.

Constructing nanohybrids with a synergistic effect using multi-components and specific micro/nanostructures can significantly enhance their electrocatalytic activity. In this work, we fabricated an In 2 O 3 ⊃NC@GO nanohybrid, in which In 2 O 3 nanoparticles (NPs) were encapsulated by an N-doped carbon (NC) shell and supported on graphene. The multi-components in In 2 O 3 ⊃NC@GO synergistically optimize the structural and electronic properties of the material. The particle size and dispersion of In 2 O 3 NPs were optimized owing to the separation effect of the amorphous NC shell and graphene support. This separation effect exposes more number of active sites for the electrochemical reaction. Abundant oxygen vacancies exist in In 2 O 3 , leading to a stronger ability for the adsorption and activation of CO 2 . The NC shell inhibits the direct contact between the electrolyte and In 2 O 3 , which significantly suppresses competitive H 2 evolution. The charge transfer during the electrocatalysis process is also effectively enhanced due to the carbon components. The synergistic effect of multi-components in the In 2 O 3 ⊃NC@GO sample results in a significantly improved CO 2 reduction reaction performance with a high HCOO – Faradic efficiency (FE) of 91.2% and a current density of 40.38 mA cm –2 at –0.8 V obtained using a flow cell. The present work demonstrates that rationally designing nanohybrids with multifunctional components is an effective strategy for optimizing the structural and electrocatalytic properties of materials for energy conversion.

To selectively detect trace carbon monoxide (CO typically lower than 100 ppb) at low temperature is still a great challenge for chemiresistive gas sensors. In this work, we introduce In2O3 nanocubes with exposed {001} facets to couple with MOF-derived porous Co3O4 nanosheets (NSs) forming p–n heterojunction for trace CO detection. Benefiting from the vacancy storing effect of the sub-valent band on In2O3 nanocube {001} facets and the p–n heterojunction effect, the electron–hole recombination is effectively inhibited, and the carrier lifetime is prolonged. As a result, the prepared CoIn0.1-based gas sensor shows a good selectivity and ultralow detection limitation of 25 ppb toward CO at relatively low temperature of 175 °C. In addition, the CoIn0.1-based CO sensor also exhibits high response (272.89%) and ultrafast response/recovery time (2 s/13 s) to 100 ppm CO, which can be ascribed to the fast gas diffusion in the porous Co3O4 NSs and the high-index facet effect of In2O3 nanocubes. This work provides a method to design and synthesize trace CO gas sensors via modulating the band structure of p–n heterojunctions constructed by two-dimensional metal oxide NSs and oxide-exposed high-index facets.
