Water electrolysis is a promising path to the industrialization development of hydrogen energy. The exploitation of high-efficiency and inexpensive catalysts become important to the mass use of water decomposition. Ni-based nanomaterials have exhibited great potential for the catalysis of water splitting, which have attracted the attention of researchers around the world. Here, we prepared a novel Mo-doped NiFe-based layered double hydroxide (LDH) with a nanoarray microstructure on Ni foam. The doping amount of Mo can significantly change the microstructure of the electrocatalysis, which will further affect the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of water splitting. This novel nanomaterial required only an overpotential of 227 mV for 10 mA cm−2and a Tafel slope of 54.8 mV/dec in 1 M KOH. Meanwhile, there was no Mo, and the NiFe-LDH needed 233 mV to attain to 10 mA cm−2. Compared to the NiFe-LDH without Mo, the NiFeMo-LDH nanosheet arrays exhibited enhanced activities with 17.1 mV/dec less Tafel in OER. The good performance of the electrocatalyst is ascribed to the special nanosheet arrays and the heterostructure of the Ni-Fe-Mo system. These features help to increase the active surface, enhancing the efficient charge transfer and the reactive activity in OER.

The development of a highly selective and trace-level gas sensing platform for detecting hydrogen sulfide (H2S) remains a formidable challenge. To solve this problem, Co–Mo multimetal oxide semiconductors are rationally tailored by employing metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as self-sacrificial templates. The MOF-derived Co3O4/β-CoMoO4 based gas sensors displays high sensitivity (Rg/Ra = 22) to 10 ppm of H2S and ultralow limit of detection (10 ppb H2S). The formation of p-p heterojunction and multivalence states of Mo play a crucial role in electron transfer and oxygen adsorption. A sensor array constructed from four Co3O4/β-CoMoO4 materials with different Co/Mo ratios demonstrates a superior selective discrimination of H2S from other VOCs and malodorous gases by principal component analysis (PCA). Besides, a H2S gas sensing and alarming platform was designed for monitoring the environment contaminated with H2S. This finding provides a feasible approach for the discovery of highly efficient gas sensors to monitor environmental H2S concentration.

Sepsis, an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial infection, has become a global public health crisis. Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in sepsis patients act as the primary trigger for activating intracellular immune pathways, ultimately leading to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. The overexpression of acidic metabolites and ROS, characteristic of the infected microenvironment, significantly impedes sepsis treatment. Cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS), a cytosolic DNA sensor, plays a key role in inflammatory diseases. The detrimental effects of STING in sepsis have been well documented. Here, we developed a pH-responsive nanotherapy platform (DMSNM@C-178/PAA) that combines ROS scavenging with cGAS-STING pathway inhibition for anti-inflammatory therapy. This nanoparticle is selectively released in the infected microenvironment, where reduced molybdenum-based polyoxometalates (Mo-POM) efficiently neutralize toxic ROS in vivo, while C-178 selectively inhibits the cGAS-STING pathway, thereby attenuating the inflammatory response and preventing organ deterioration. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that DMSNM@C-178/PAA treats sepsis by eliminating excess ROS and modulating autoimmune dysfunction via the cGAS-STING pathway, providing a novel therapeutic strategy for sepsis management.

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) significantly influences the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability through the geometric and electronic effects of a catalyst. We herein develop a stable Ru 0 −Mo δ+ catalyst for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of fatty acids to alkanes (2.5 μmol g −1 cat h −1 ) at low to room temperatures, meanwhile demonstrating its general applicability to various complex fatty acids. Kinetic studies and reaction pathway analysis revealed that the Ru–Mo SMSI significantly reduced the reaction activation energy by altering the HDO pathways. Mechanistic studies indicate that electron transfer occurs between the active Ru nanoclusters and the Mo δ+ support, which enhances catalytic activity by promoting the adsorption of RCOO* at the Ru 0 −Mo δ+ interface. Our research establishes an efficient Ru–Mo catalyst for biomass upgrading at low temperatures and calls for reassessing the electronic effects in the M 0 -M δ+ interfacial catalysis model.

Sulfite is deemed as a promising precursor to produce highly reactive species for contaminants remediation. Herein, the urchin-like Ni-Fe-Mo sulfide (NiFeMoS x ) was anchored in-situ on nickel foam as a cathode to activate CaSO 3 for efficient degradation of tetracycline (TC) under natural condition. The degradation efficiency reached 92.7% within 60 min, which was about 1.81 times higher than that of the electro-Fenton process based on NiFeMoS x . The beneficial performance came from the synergistic activation of CaSO 3 by simultaneous rapid redox cycles of Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Ni(II)/Ni(III) on the NiFeMoS x cathode. Specifically, the primary intermediates Fe(II)-HSO 3 - and Ni(II)-SO 3 2- triggered a series of radical chain reactions, accompanied the reduction of Ni(III)/Fe(III) by electrochemistry and electron donor of Mo(IV) and S 2- on the surface of the catalyst. The regeneration of the Fe(II)/Ni(II) was quickly realized and subsequently triggered the chain reactions, which would accelerate the formation rate of reactive species, such as SO 4 ∙ − , ·OH, O 2 ∙ − and 1 O 2 , of which 1 O 2 and O 2 •- played important roles on degradation TC. This work provides a promising application for the efficient removal of persistent organic pollutants by metal sulfide activated sulfite.

The precise structural integration of single-atom and high-entropy-alloy features for energy electrocatalysis is highly appealing for energy conversion, yet remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report a class of single-atom Mo-tailored PdPtNiCuZn high-entropy-alloy nanosheets with dilute Pt-Pt ensembles and intrinsic tensile strain (Mo 1 -PdPtNiCuZn) as efficient electrocatalysts for enhancing the methanol oxidation reaction catalysis. The as-made Mo 1 -PdPtNiCuZn delivers an extraordinary mass activity of 24.55 A mg Pt −1 and 11.62 A mg Pd+Pt −1 , along with impressive long-term durability. The planted oxophilic Mo single atoms as promoters modify the electronic structure of isolated Pt sites in the high-entropy-alloy host, suppressing the formation of CO adsorbates and steering the reaction towards the formate pathway. Meanwhile, Mo promoters and tensile strain synergistically optimize the adsorption behaviour of intermediates to achieve a more energetically favourable pathway and minimize the methanol oxidation reaction barrier. This work advances the design of atomically precise catalytic sites by creating a new paradigm of single atom-tailored high-entropy alloys, opening an encouraging pathway to the design of CO-tolerance electrocatalysts.

With the trend of heavy and inferior crude oil, the design of hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts with excellent activity and high active metal utilization is an inevitable trend for the upgrading of refining technology. In this study, a highly dispersed Mo catalyst confined within nitrogen-doped porous carbon (xMo@NC) was prepared using an in situ encapsulation-pyrolysis approach and used in the HDS reaction of dibenzothiophene (DBT). The methods of XRD, HRTEM, HAADF-STEM, N 2 physisorption, FT-IR, Raman, and XPS were used to carry out thorough microstructural characterization. The results demonstrated that the Mo species in xMo@NC were highly dispersed, exhibiting superior intrinsic HDS activity compared to MoS 2 /NC* catalysts and conventional supported catalyst MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 . The xMo@NC catalyst exhibited significant direct desulfurization (DDS) pathway in the HDS reaction of DBT. Differential charge density and bader charge suggested that significant electron transfer between the sulfur atom of DBT and the Mo species of xMo@NC, which weakened the C S bond and made it easier to remove sulfur via DDS pathway during the HDS reaction. This work presents a new catalytic material with high intrinsic activity and enhanced DDS desulfurization selectivity, providing fresh perspectives on the creation of high-performance HDS catalysts.

This study developed an amorphous MoO 2 –C hollow spherical cocatalyst (MOC) derived from Mo-polydopamine, and hybridized it with ZnIn 2 S 4 to form ZnIn 2 S 4 /MoO 2 –C (ZMC) composites. Various characterizations were conducted to analyze the crystal structure, morphology, and photoelectrical properties of the ZMC composites. The prepared ZMC composites were evaluated for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under simulated sunlight. Furthermore, nanorod-like MoO 2 –C cocatalyst (A-MOC) and ZnIn 2 S 4 /A-MOC (A-ZMC) composites were prepared to investigate the impact of carbon source on catalytic activity. Results show that the addition of MOC cocatalyst significantly enhances the hydrogen evolution rate of ZnIn 2 S 4 from 0.54 to 20.61 mmol g −1 h −1 , and increases the apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm from 1.66 % to 8.63 %. The hydrogen evolution rate of the optimal ZMC is 1.26 times that of the optimal A-ZMC (16.28 mmol g −1 h −1 ). The crystal structure and morphology of MoO 2 –C determined by carbon source affect the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of ZnIn 2 S 4 . Insight mechanism analysis indicates that the formation of a Schottky junction facilitates the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. Finally, the ZMC composite catalyst retains 89 % of its original hydrogen evolution performance after 5 cycles over 15 h, demonstrating good stability and promising prospects for real-world applications.

Highly efficient electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant elements are desired for water-splitting to produce clean and renewable chemical fuel. Herein, a heteroatomic-doped multi-phase Mo-doped nickel phosphide/nickel sulfide (Mo-NiP x /NiS y ) nanowire electrocatalyst is designed by a successive phosphorization and sulfuration method for boosting overall water splitting (both oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER)) in alkaline solution. As expected, the Mo-NiP x /NiS y electrode possesses low overpotentials both at low and high current densities in HER, while the Mo-NiP x /NiS y heterostructure exhibits high active performance with ultra-low overpotentials of 137, 182, and 250 mV at the current density of 10, 100, and 400 mA cm −2 in 1 m KOH solution, respectively, in oxygen evolution reaction. In particular, the as-prepared Mo-NiP x /NiS y electrodes exhibit remarkable full water splitting performance at both low and high current densities of 10, 100, and 400 mA cm −2 with 1.42, 1.70, and 2.36 V, respectively, which is comparable to commercial electrolysis.

Hydrogen production via water electrolysis is limited by the high energy barrier of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As an emerging oxide material, high-entropy oxides (HEOs) are regarded as promising OER electrocatalysts owing to the multielement synergistic effect. Herein, a facile approach is proposed to synthesize Mo-doped high-entropy spinel oxide Mo-(FeCoNiCrMn) 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Mo-HEO). Interestingly, only low-content Mo doping into HEO can reduce the crystallite size, prevent particle agglomeration, and modulate the electron structure. Consequently, the electrocatalyst of 6% Mo-HEO exhibits superior OER performance with overpotentials of only 280 and 324 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm −2 . In situ Raman spectroscopy confirms the transformation of surface spinel sites to metal oxyhydroxide, highlighting the Mo-driven surface reconstruction. Furthermore, Mo doping as a versatile strategy has been successfully extended to other spinel oxides with significant activity improvements, offering a great potential in the development of spinel-typed HEO electrocatalysts.

Defects, such as pores, microcracks, and thermal damage, pose significant challenges in the selective laser melting (SLM) process of diamond reinforced metal matrix composites. To address these issues, this study utilizes Mo-coated diamond particles prepared via salt bath plating for SLM processing of CoCr-diamond composites. The SLM process parameters including laser power, scanning speed, and hatch spacing were systematically optimized using the response surface method (RSM). Subsequently, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the SLMed CoCr-diamond composites were thoroughly investigated. Notably, a protective layer of Mo 2 C is formed on the surface of diamond particles during the salt bath plating process. When compared to the SLMed CoCr-15 vol% Mo-uncoated diamond composite, the Mo coating significantly enhances the compressive strength by 69 % and flexural strength by an impressive 345 % for the CoCr-15 vol% Mo-coated diamond composite.

Unlocking the full potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for water-splitting applications requires innovative strategies to enhance their catalytic efficiency and stability. Here, we introduce a Mo-doped Fe-based MOF (MoFe-NH2-BDC) with a unique 2D nanosheet and plate-like morphology to revolutionize the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Mo incorporation optimizes electronic properties, accelerates charge transfer, and dynamically reconstructs the catalyst surface into highly active FeOOH species, ensuring long-term performance. This next-generation electrocatalyst achieves an ultra-low overpotential of 254 mV at 20 mA cm‒2, with a rapid Tafel slope of 66 mV dec‒1, surpassing conventional RuO2 catalysts. Operando Raman and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy reveal that Mo facilitates an adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM), stabilizing intermediates and boosting reaction kinetics. In a practical two-electrode system, MoFe-NH2-BDC (+) || Pt/C (−) demonstrates an exceptional cell voltage of 1.58 V at 100 mA cm‒2, maintaining stability for 85 h. These results underscore the transformative impact of Mo doping in MOFs, paving the way for highly efficient, durable, and scalable electrocatalysts for sustainable energy applications.
