Synergistic enhancement of density and curing depth in DLP 3D printed MgO-Y2O3 coated Si3N4 ceramics

Minhao Shen,Renli Fu,Xinya Xu,Xuhai Liu,Kuang Sun,Wei Xu,Yanling Jiang,Zhe Zhao

The additive manufacturing technology based on digital light processing (DLP) has made it possible to construct silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) ceramics with complex structures. However, due to the high ultraviolet light absorbance and low sintering activity of Si 3 N 4 powders, it is challenging to realize tightly layer bonded and dense Si 3 N 4 ceramics via the DLP technique. Herein, we proposed to coat the Si 3 N 4 particle surface with magnesium oxide and yttrium oxide (MgO-Y 2 O 3 ) layer through the co-precipitation method, in an attempt to achieve the dual purposes of increasing the curing depth and promoting densification. The MgO-Y 2 O 3 layer can not only reduce the refractive index difference between the Si 3 N 4 powder and the photosensitive resin to improve the curing depth, but also serve as the sintering assistance to generate the liquid phase and promote densification. When the coating content of MgO-Y 2 O 3 is 10   wt.%, the curing depth of the ceramic slurry can be increased to 107 μm, which is 33% higher than that of pristine powders. This strategy can provide a simple and effective method to construct advanced Si 3 N 4 ceramics via DLP 3D printing.

Mechanical enhancement of MgO-CaO ceramics through transition interface design: molecular dynamics simulations and experimental validation

Yunjie Dong,Zhoufu Wang,Hao Liu,Yan Ma,Chengji Deng,Zhongfeng Xia,Zhenghuang Quan,Xitang Wang,Ling Zhang

This study aims at the inadequate mechanical properties of MgO-CaO ceramics used in high-temperature alloy smelting, achieving significant improvements through interface design. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the microscopic mechanisms underlying the poor mechanical properties of MgO-CaO ceramics. Specifically, the weak bonding strength at the grain boundaries between MgO and CaO results in the MgO-CaO interface acting as a conduit for the rapid propagation of cracks, with minimal effect on crack deflection. To address this issue, the interfacial bond strength was improved by constructing transition layers at the interface using CaLaAlO 4 . Molecular dynamics simulations show that CaLaAlO 4 reacts well with MgO and CaO crystals, forming dual-sided transition layers at the MgO-CaO interface. This increases the interfacial binding energy from 1.266 J/m 2 to 3.369 J/m 2 and 3.320 J/m 2 . Interfacial tensile simulations also reveal significant improvements in mechanical properties. Furthermore, the incorporation of CaLaAlO 4 suppresses crack propagation rates and induces crack deflection at the MgO-CaO interface. Finally, experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the microstructural design and the enhanced macroscopic performance. At 0.4 mol % CaLaAlO 4 , the MgO-CaO ceramics achieved optimal performance, with a flexural strength of 130.92 MPa and specific fracture energy of 2.91 kJ/m 2 . The mechanical strength increased by 3.4 times compared to the pre-introduction period. Microstructural analysis confirmed dual-sided transitional interfaces and showed that the CaLaAlO 4 phase hindered crack propagation. This work establishes fundamental principles for microstructural design of high-performance MgO-CaO ceramics operating under extreme environments, offering theoretical frameworks for interface-controlled refractory material development.

DLP-fabricated TPMS bionic gradient PEGDA/MgO/TA/HA scaffolds: antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic properties

Shuaihang Wang,Jingbin Hao,Siyu Liu,Haiyu Liu,Ding Shen,Zhonghao Ji,Kai Chen

Due to their internal continuity and smooth surface geometry, three-period minimal surfaces (TPMS) have been widely applied in the structural design and fabrication of bone tissue engineering scaffolds. To achieve a biomimetic simulation of natural bone tissue structure and enhance the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of the implant site, this study innovatively proposes a biomimetic gradient TPMS scaffold with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory functions. First, based on the hierarchical structural characteristics of compact bone and cancellous bone in natural bone, four TPMS gradient structures were parametrically designed. These four structures were then subjected to comprehensive testing to identify the one with the optimal performance. Furthermore, to address the limitation of single-function traditional bone repair scaffolds, this study used polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) as the matrix and prepared a multifunctional composite slurry by incorporating nano-hydroxyapatite (HA), nano-magnesium oxide (MgO), and tannic acid (TA). A series of test results indicate that the I-WP scaffold exhibits the optimal combination of mechanical and permeability properties, while also demonstrating excellent in vitro osteogenic differentiation capacity and antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. In summary, the gradient-structured composite scaffold prepared in this study achieves an integrated structure that enhances mechanical properties, boosts osteogenic mineralization activity, and provides synergistic antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functions. It offers new insights for the structural design and functional optimization of bone tissue engineering scaffolds and holds promising application prospects.

The reinforcing mechanism of ionic interdiffusion on MgO–MgAl2O4 composites between structural densification and mechanical property

Songtong Xuan,Xiangchen Kong,Jianying Hao,Xiaojun Wang,Yuming Tian

MgO–MgAl 2 O 4 composites are arising as promising candidates for high-temperature industrial applications. For this reason, the in-situ synthesis of such types of composites with spinel structure has attracted the attention of the scientific community. Along these lines, in this work, magnesia and bauxite were used as raw materials to fabricate MgAl 2 O 4 composites. The mass proportion in the composites was also adjusted by using the solid-phase sintering method at 1400–1650 °C to enhance its mechanical properties and densification. XPS and SEM measurements were conducted, indicating that the MA50 sample with the mass ratio of 50:100 (MgAl 2 O 4 :MgO + MgAl 2 O 4 ) exhibited the best properties at 1550 °C, in terms of uniformity of the grains’ growth morphology, optimal densification of the matrix structure, and achieving a maximum flexural strength of 113.23 MPa. From our analysis, it was demonstrated that the non-equivalent displacement of Al 3+ and Mg 2+ could easily lead to the formation of the (Mg 1-x Al x/2 )Mg x/4 O solid-solution during the similar crystal structure, which enhanced mechanical strengthening between the micro-grain and framework. Meanwhile, the existence of a certain liquid phase not only effectively increased the mass transfer during the processing of interdiffusion between Al 3+ and Mg 2+ , but also promoted the distribution of crystallite and microstructure.

Strategies for enhancing catalytic efficiency and stability of MgO-biochar catalysts in glucose isomerization to fructose

Peixin Wang,Reeti Kumar,Wenhua Xue,Liwen Luo,Sunita Varjani,Jonathan Woon-Chung Wong,Jun Zhao

Glucose isomerization to fructose is crucial for its application in food industry and biorefinery. Herein, strategies for developing MgO-biochar catalysts to convert glucose to fructose were explored and optimized with an emphasis on the influence of synthesis method on the stability of the catalyst. Despite the favorable activity exhibited by all catalysts, the embedding of MgO on the surface, loading onto porous structures, or incorporating into a carbon framework significantly diminished the catalytic activity and stability of magnesium species. The one-step synthesis approach facilitates the uniform distribution of MgO nanoparticles on the biochar matrix, enhancing their interactions and preventing Mg leaching compared to MgO-biochar prepared through two-step methods. After optimization, fructose yield exceeding 26% and a selectivity of 91% were obtained under mild conditions of 80 ℃ for 2 h in water. In summary, the effective anchoring of MgO on the biochar exhibited dual effects for enhanced catalytic activity and stability.

Enhanced antibacterial properties of poly(butylene succinate-co-terephthalate)/Ag@MgO nanocomposite films for food packaging

Yi Ding,Wenwen Yu,Jie Zhang,Wenying Liu,Fengbo Zhu,Yanan Ye,Qiang Zheng

The Ag@MgO nanoparticles (NPs), consisting of silver NPs with a size range of 6–15 nm well-dispersed on the surface of MgO nanoparticles, were synthesized using a simple and efficient in situ synthesis method. These NPs exhibited superior antibacterial activity compared to bare MgO NPs. Subsequently, they were incorporated into poly(butylene succinate- co -terephthalate) (PBST) matrix to prepare antibacterial food packaging films. The effects of Ag@MgO NPs morphology on the compatibility, mechanical, water vapor barrier, UV blocking and antibacterial properties of PBST matrix were evaluated. Unmodified Ag@MgO NPs caused agglomeration and poor mechanical properties. However, when the Ag@MgO NPs were surface modified and interacted with the PBST matrix, the dispersion of nanoparticles and crystallinity improved, resulting in enhanced tensile strength and barrier properties of the composite films. Furthermore, the well-formed of Ag@MgO NPs in the films played a positive role in controlling the growth of microorganisms. Upon incorporation of the modified Ag@MgO NPs, the PBST nanocomposite films exhibited a 23.5% increase in the tensile strength and a 63% decrease in the water vapor permeability compared to PBST films. Moreover, the UV blocking performances were enhanced, and high antibacterial rates of 99.8% and 99.7% were achieved against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. All the results indicate that the PBST incorporating modified Ag@MgO NPs have excellent potential for use in food packaging applications.

One-step synthesis of flower-like MgO/Carbon materials for efficient H2S oxidation at room temperature

Kunlin Li,Xueyan Chen,Jianghao Zhang,Min Chen,Xiaoxiao Qin,Fei Wang,Kai Li,Jinhou Fang,Changbin Zhang

Regenerable materials with abundant basic sites and sulfur storage space are highly desirable for the removal of H 2 S. In this work, we synthesized a flower-like MgO/Carbon material by one-step carbonization of magnesium gluconate and applied it for H 2 S oxidation at room temperature. The results demonstrate that the high content of MgO and super-hydrophilic surface of the MgO/Carbon provide abundant basic sites for the adsorption and dissociation of H 2 S. Moreover, carbon defects and a well‐developed pore structure offer active sites for the desulfurization reaction and large space for storage of sulfur products. Consequently, the MgO/Carbon materials exhibit excellent H 2 S oxidation performance, which is far superior to that of commercial activated carbon. In addition, the MgO/Carbon materials show extraordinary regeneration capacity and maintain their high performance even after 5 cycles of desulfurization/regeneration. Furthermore, mechanisms for the H 2 S oxidation process, deactivation and regeneration are proposed based on the experimental and characterization results. Considering the simple preparation process, excellent desulfurization and regeneration performance of as-prepared MgO/Carbon material, our findings provide a new strategy for the design of efficient desulfurizers.

Haotian Li,Feng Liu,Shuhui Wang,Fengjia Wang,Xin Qian,Caiduan Zhang,Yongliang Ma,Lidong Wang

Based on advanced oxidation technology, a new method for the simultaneous removal of SO 2 and NO x from industrial flue gas using Na 2 S 2 O 8 /MgO was proposed. The method does not require the body structure of the wet desulfurization device is changed but adds Na 2 S 2 O 8 to the original equipment to realize simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification. After determining Cl − was additive, the effects of various reaction factors on the simultaneous removal of SO 2 and NO x were investigated, including the Cl − concentration, the initial concentration of the oxidant, the initial pH value of the solution, and the reaction temperature. According to the characterization of removal products and the types of free radicals involved in the reaction by XRD , XPS , and EPR , the reaction mechanism was elucidated. The experimental results indicated that the removal products were mainly sulfates and nitrates. The free radicals involved in the reaction were SO 4 ·− , ·OH, and Cl·, and the key free radical was Cl·.

Fabrication of graphite/MgO-reinforced poly(vinyl chloride) composites by mechanical activation with enhanced thermal properties

Qinghua Li,Fang Shen,Jingqi Ji,Yanjuan Zhang,Yaseen Muhammad,Zuqiang Huang,Huayu Hu,Yunpeng Zhu,Yuben Qin

In this study, a mechanical activation (MA) approach was developed to fabricate graphite/MgO-reinforced poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites with superior thermal properties. The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis. SEM results revealed uniformly dispersed graphite and MgO flakes in a PVC matrix and the successful formation of a thermal network by MA, which led to enhanced thermal conductivity. DSC and TGA results of the composites showed enhancement in the glass transition temperature (Tg) from 82.81 °C to 88.60 °C and decomposition temperature from 287.61 °C to 305.59 °C as compared to pristine PVC. The thermal conductivity of the graphite/MgO/PVC composite at optimum conditions was 0.8791 W m−1 K−1, which was 6.27 times higher than that of pristine PVC. The mechanical properties such as the tensile strength and bending strength of graphite/MgO/PVC composites were also augmented as compared to pristine PVC, graphite/PVC and MgO/PVC composites. Due to the enhanced thermal properties of the newly designed graphite/MgO/PVC composites, they have potential as alternatives to classical PVC-based materials in thermal and many other target field-based applications.

Morphological control of inverted MgO-SiO2 composite catalysts for efficient conversion of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene

Shenxiao Li,Yong Men,Jinguo Wang,Shuang Liu,Xuefei Wang,Fei Ji,Shanshan Chai,Qiaoling Song

In this work, three novel MgO-SiO 2 composite catalysts with inverted structure have been synthesized via a facile and scalable strategy by means of the incipient wetness impregnation of the silica sol onto MgO precursors with different morphologies, and evaluated for the one-step conversion of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene. The prepared flower-like MgO-SiO 2 composite catalysts exhibited highly enhanced catalytic activity than those catalysts synthesized from MgO precursors with nanodisks and nanosheets morphologies. Characterization results based on XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis, BET, CO 2 -TPD, NH 3 -TPD, ethanol-TPD, and 29 Si MAS NMR revealed that unique layered flower-like architectures may facilitate the formation of interfacial Mg-O-Si chemical bond in binary MgO-SiO 2 composite catalysts which are mainly responsible for the superior activity. This study presents a new strategy to design and develop the catalyst for efficient conversion of bio-ethanol to 1,3-butadiene by morphological control of MgO-SiO 2 bifunctional catalysts.

Photocatalytic selective oxidation of ammonium to dinitrogen by FeOx-MgO activated persulfate under solar-light irradiation

Yong Liu,Le Zhang,Ting Liu,Jianlong Wang

The selective oxidation of ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) to dinitrogen (N 2 ) by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is of paramount significance, but it is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel composite (FeO x -MgO) was synthesized to activate persulfate (PS) for selective oxidation of ammonium (NH 4 + ) to N 2 under simulated solar-light irradiation ( hv ). The results demonstrated that the conversion of NH 4 + to ammonia (NH 3 ) on the basic sites of FeO x -MgO was a key step for the selective oxidation of NH 4 + . Fe(IV) species formed in FeO x -MgO/PS/ hv system could enhance both the efficiency and N 2 selectivity of the NH 4 + -N oxidation through the oxidation of ammonia hydride to N 2 . The 100 % NH 4 + -N removal and over 95.5 % N 2 selectivity could be achieved after 30 min when initial pH was in range of 2–10, and the initial NH 4 + -N concentration was 30 mg N/L. This study could provide a promising technology for the selective oxidation of NH 4 + -N to N 2 in water and wastewater.

The Effect of In Situ Synthesis of MgO Nanoparticles on the Thermal Properties of Ternary Nitrate

Zhiyu Tong,Linfeng Li,Yuanyuan Li,Qingmeng Wang,Xiaomin Cheng

The multiple eutectic nitrates with a low melting point are widely used in the field of solar thermal utilization due to their good thermophysical properties. The addition of nanoparticles can improve the heat transfer and heat storage performance of nitrate. This article explored the effect of MgO nanoparticles on the thermal properties of ternary eutectic nitrates. As a result of the decomposition reaction of the Mg(OH)2precursor at high temperature, MgO nanoparticles were synthesized in situ in the LiNO3–NaNO3–KNO3ternary eutectic nitrate system. XRD and Raman results showed that MgO nanoparticles were successfully synthesized in situ in the ternary nitrate system. SEM and EDS results showed no obvious agglomeration. The specific heat capacity of the modified salt is significantly increased. When the content of MgO nanoparticles is 2 wt %, the specific heat of the modified salt in the solid phase and the specific heat in the liquid phase increased by 51.54% and 44.50%, respectively. The heat transfer performance of the modified salt is also significantly improved. When the content of MgO nanoparticles is 5 wt %, the thermal diffusion coefficient of the modified salt is increased by 39.3%. This study also discussed the enhancement mechanism of the specific heat capacity of the molten salt by the nanoparticles mainly due to the higher specific surface energy of MgO and the semi-solid layer that formed between the MgO nanoparticles and the molten salt. Keywords:MgO nanoparticles;eutectic nitrates;in situ;specific heat capacity;thermal diffusion coefficient
